Outcome not fair, in my opinion.

What strikes me about the first photo group is the texture. The clouds and the water. The image appears fractal, like the clouds or water would look the same at any level of magnification.

NYT, Ross Douthat, June 4

We Can’t Be Ukraine Hawks Forever

"...So if Kyiv and Moscow are headed for a multiyear or even multi-decade frozen conflict, we will need to push Ukraine toward its most realistic rather than its most ambitious military strategy. And just as urgently, we will need to shift some of the burden of supporting Kyiv from our own budget to our European allies.

Those goals are compatible with what we’ve done to date, and they can obviously be adapted if better opportunities suddenly arise. But a good strategic theory needs to assume difficulty, challenge, limits. The danger now is that the practical achievements of our hawkish policy encourages the opposite kind of theorizing, a hubris that squanders our still-provisional success."

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/06/04/opinion/ukraine-russia-putin-war.htm

Everybody is entitled to their opinion. Douthat, IMO probably best known for creating meandering word sandwiches, has no experience in military matters.

So to write the idiotic:

"So if Kyiv and Moscow are headed for a multiyear or even multi-decade frozen conflict, we will need to push Ukraine toward its most realistic rather than its most ambitious military strategy."

...demonstrates that Douthat doesn't know what "frozen conflict" actually means.

Wikipedia:

"In international relations, a frozen conflict is a situation in which active armed conflict has been brought to an end, but no peace treaty or other political framework resolves the conflict to the satisfaction of the combatants. Therefore, legally the conflict can start again at any moment, creating an environment of insecurity and instability."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frozen_conflict

Ukraine and the Russian-controlled portions of eastern Ukraine have been in a frozen conflict since 2014, mainly shelling each other's soldiers from fixed positions.

When Ukraine finally gets ample amounts of the long-range artillery and medium-range rocket
systems recently promised by Washington and London...

LONDON, June 2, 2022 — Britain says it will send sophisticated medium-range rocket systems to Ukraine, in a move coordinated with the United States.

Defense Secretary Ben Wallace says the U.K. will send an unspecified number of M270 launchers, which can send precision-guided rockets up to 80 kilometers (50 miles).

Britain says the decision has been coordinated closely with a U.S. decision to send Ukraine High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems. The two missile systems are similar, though the American one has wheels while the British one -- also U.S.-built -- runs on tracks.

Britain says Ukrainian troops will be trained in the U.K. to use the equipment.

...for the Ukrainian army, this is expected to be a game-changer.

The Trump Pyramid Scheme, y'all! Yet another "Trump steals from everyone" scheme.

TFG, Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump, and Ivanka Trump all face hours and hours of questioning in a federal lawsuit alleging that the Trump Corporation promoted a multi-level marketing scheme — better known as a pyramid scheme — through the company ACN Opportunity, LLC, which operates under the name American Communications Network.

According to the lawsuit, ACN was a “get-rich-quick-scheme” that burnished Trump and his family’s names for the purposes of “conning each of these victims into giving up hundreds or thousands of dollars” in alleged violation of various state laws.

The case is proceeding in the Southern District of New York. The lawsuit claims that Trump arranged for ACN to appear twice on The Celebrity Apprentice.

Ummm...even Homer nods.

It should be Word Salad (NOT Word Sandwich!) in my post above on Ross Douthat's weird Ukraine piece in the NYT.

As a lame excuse, both reference edibles.

With the Putin baby formula shortage continuing unabated, has the Soiled Pants administration appointed a baby food czar* or czarette to bring the crisis to a conclusion? Might I suggest newly minted mother Mayor Pete.

*FDR was the first administration to employ czars, who could be appointed w/o senate confirmation.

The mockingbirds are unhappy herevin north east Florida this early Sunday morning. A big hawk in the yard scratching up grubs for breakfast and it has the mockingbirds pissed off. They wre fearless - dive bombing the hawk to have him move on. The tropical passed just south of us so it's coffee bagels and maybe a bike ride on the beach. The surf is still sloppy and the winds - still on shore - are not cooperating for a clean up ...

A pyramid scheme?? You mean like Social Security??

Why do Democrat administrations always appoint "czars" for this or that while Republican administrations don't? Is it something in the soul of a Democrat to want to be a czar? A strain of dictatorship inherent in Democrats?

Mike of Snoqualmie said...

Sorry, Gilbar, ACN is just a typical multi-level marketing scheme. My parents were involved in more than I can count on. These schemes rely on the gullibility of the participants. Most end up with garages full of product. Amway is an example.

Unless the SDNY wants to go after every MLM company, it's a political prosecution. The NY establishment hates Trump and will do anything, legal or illegal, to get him.

My wife and I were involved in a MLM briefly, back in the late 70s(?). Irradiated food--eat it in minutes today, or store it forever.

The products were actually pretty good, but "radioactive" food was a tough sell.

In 1976, according to Jack Nicklaus, Delaware County, Ohio was "dry" as in, alcohol beverage sales were forbidden. Saturday afternoon on CBS, during Jack's PGA tournament at Muirfield Village, he retold the story about why his golf course located its clubhouse in Franklin County where alcohol could be served.

Muirfield Village is located in both Delaware and Franklin counties just east of Dublin in the Columbus metropolitan area. Further east lies Westerville which is also located in both of these counties. The city of Westerville, Ohio, was dry for more than a century. Once the home of the Anti-Saloon League and called the "dry capital of the world", the first legal drink in recent times was served in 2006.

Outside of Westerville, suburbanites from both Delaware and Franklin counties have always been permitted to consume alcohol in public places.

So when old folks repeat tall tales enough times, they soon come to believe them. Donald Trump, for example, repeats and repeats the same tall tales - but he is simply incapable of finding anything else to discuss rationally.

The Southern District of New York tries fraud cases discovered by the FBI, so no, they are never going to discuss Social Security - which by the way, is imperfect, but works OK for folks who have nothing else.

You might want to review the Trump University scheme, the Trump Charity scheme, dealings with the NY and Russian Mafia, ripping off all takers involved on the wrong side of his many bankruptcies, and All County Building Supply, a dandy scheme used to rip off tenants and the government. There are more but these readings will take a while.
