"'What are you doing, George?' I asked him plainly and calmly. I got the same answer every time... You work for a madman, George would say in a loud, sinister voice...."

"Night after night, I would come home from a busy day at work ... While I was minding dishes, dogs, laundry, managing adolescent dramas and traumas, George would be just steps away from me, tucked away in his home office, plotting against my boss and me."

Writes Kellyanne Conway, in her new book "Here's the Deal," quoted in "Kellyanne Conway memoir: Husband's attacks 'sneaky, almost sinister'" (Axios).

Is it weird that those 2 are still married?

Weird? Try incomprehensible.

Christopher B म्हणाले...

Definitely weirder than Carville and Maitland hooking up.

I'd say Kellyanne has good reason to believe that she'd never be allowed to see her daughter again if she tried divorcing the scumbag.

There was a Simpsons imaginary-story episode where Homer and Marge were Bonnie and Clyde. After they've robbed some little bank and shot up the place, a bank manager cries out, "why are you doing this?" Homer yells back, "It's a sex thing!"

Isn't it odd how crazy-acting are the ones who say Trump is crazy. I mean the more Trump goes about his day acting normal, the more they act out his imputed insanity.

I assume it's for the sake of the kids. etbass is mistaken in comparing them to Carville and Matlin, as though they were simply on different pages politically. Carville and Matlin are professionals and it's easy to see how they could maintain mutual respect. George Conway, of other hand, is a first class POS who seems to revel in humiliating his wife.

I find the two of them, and their crazy daughter, very weird. but then I'm not related to them.

Marriages like this one, or Carville and Matalin, should be important clues that national politics is kayfabe.

Would it surprise you to know that someone who works for the Harlem Globetrotters is married to someone who works for the Washington Generals? Or that Ralph Wolf* and Sam the Sheepdog eat lunch together after they clock out?

Yes, my first thought was of Gollum and his wife too, but you're right that they were professionals about it. I don't know that Conway is actually humiliating his wife, whatever he may think (embarassing her with his behaviour, yes, but "humiliating," I am unsure). But he does seem genuinely emotionally unhinged, and I suspect there's even more tension in their marriage than is apparent on the surface.

George'd probably had a prestigious job lined up and Trump's election messed that up for him. I think that's the motivation for most of these bitter, Never-Trump Republicans. They suddenly found themselves riding the wrong coat-tails.

Yeah, I suppose. If you start from the premise that divorce is a viable solution to the problem of being married to someone you don't always get along with. Children change that. It's not always about you. In fact, it may not be about you at all.

"The guy is fat, ugly, and as far as I know, not incredibly rich."

According to Wikipedia, he's a partner in a big DC law firm.

"n the late 1990s Conway dated conservative pundit Laura Ingraham. After he saw Kellyanne Fitzpatrick on the cover of a society magazine, he asked Ann Coulter for an introduction, and began dating her. George and Kellyanne married in 2001. They have four children...."

4 children... that's reason enough to stay together for better or worse. Plus, there's Catholicism — she's Catholic.

Rollo म्हणाले...

She used to have a TV show with Frank Luntz. They seemed like a nice couple. That didn't go anywhere. Rumors about Frank.

Yes, it's surprising that Kellyanne and George are married. It's more surprising that anyone married George.

I'd also say that it's also surprising that Kellyanne's marriage to anyone has lasted so long, but everyone in DC is so repellent that by the standards of the capital city, she is probably a "keeper."

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

"In March 2019, Trump responded to Conway's attacks by calling him a "stone cold LOSER & husband from hell" on Twitter."

Ha ha.

By contrast, Trump calls Kellyanne "honey." (I'm seeing that in various quoted from the book.)

Surprised AA, an S&C NYC alum, is not more familiar with Wachtell. A purely NYC firm, by far the richest in the country thanks to its leadership in an M+A heavy practice. Not Conway's area, but he was (no longer a partner) the beneficiary of its lockstep compensation practice, now almost extinct with BigLaw firms. He probably made over $100m in course of his career.

Static Ping म्हणाले...

Unless you are privy to what is going on, it is hard to tell why people do certain things. I will admit it is extremely weird considering how outwardly abusive he is online, but why he acts that way I refuse to guess. It is possible this is all for show, among other possibilities. It is also possible that they are both weird people and found each other.

But, yes, we are much more accustomed to the husband and wife being outwardly loving and caring, and then finding out he's been cheating on her since before the wedding, she's a shrew that throwing around furniture in a rage on the slightest of pretenses, and they both have substance abuse issues, but enough about the Clintons.

Amadeus 48 म्हणाले...

What we have here is an "ask" versus "guess" problem.

Kellyanne (ask) asks, "What are you doing, George?" George (guess) replies, "Your boss is a madman."

Kellyanne is direct--she asks what George is doing. George doesn't want to appear rude, so he talks about Trump instead of saying something direct but rude, like "You and your crazy boss are ruining America!" What could she do except reply with something equally direct, like "I saved the country from people like you and those crooked Clintons!"

See how well the two work together, notwithstanding their fundamental ask/guess orientations?

Brian म्हणाले...

George wanted to be Solicitor General, but didn't get it.

So there are other more personal reasons for him to be against Trump than politics.

Carville and Matlin are professionals

Exactly. They are not "true believers". Politics for them is a profession. They also only work on campaigns, not in the government. There's always a new campaign. No bad blood for being left out of some plum assignment.

Christopher B म्हणाले...

tim maguire is hinting at one big distinction between Kellyanne and George Conway, and Carville and Maitland. IIRC both Carville and Maitland were political pros with well-known opposing views when they married. As Ann just noted, George went NeverTrump after he and Kellyanne were already married.

traditionalguy म्हणाले...

The idiot is jealous of such an accomplished woman. He should appreciate her talents. But instead he viciously attacks Trump as a career move insurance policy. It’s DC Town, Jake.

Quaestor म्हणाले...

Is it weird that those 2 are still married?

No. Love implies contradictions. Manipulators are wont to create conditional tests, like if you loved me, you'd say, do, believe, X. But just by observation of love in action, one must conclude such tests are bullshit. It's axiomatic, I love youI agree with you, just as I agree with youI love you.

Jefferson's Revenge म्हणाले...

I was wondering if she was Catholic till I saw the Wikipedia quote above. If that explains it I admire Kellyanne even more and I admire her a lot already. At least she sticks to her beliefs and does not drop them out of convenience. In public life, she was treated like Sarah Huckabee was, which was disgraceful. Both were successful at their jobs and were laughed at for their physical appearances. The things that were said of them AS WOMEN and BY WOMEN, were worse than anything Trump has said.

Lloyd W. Robertson म्हणाले...

Because of Megyn Kelly's interview with Kyle Dunnigan and some of his characters (including Biden), I borrowed Megyn's book from the library. Not very good. Kellyanne's book sounds more interesting. Politics is a mixture of public-spiritedness and some pretty nasty people who probably couldn't get any other job. Strange to have this ying and yang in a marriage. On provoking George and all the Lincoln Project turkeys: "Trump you magnificent bastard!" (Carol). Perfect.

farmgirl म्हणाले...

I think Trump may call every female “honey”. Some people are like that.
Idk why staying in an unhealthy marriage is better than splitting up since the kids aren’t blind or deaf.
A little honesty would help- and maybe there is honesty: we’re staying together for you, kids.

Who ever really knows what goes on behind closed doors. As my husband says- we all look good from the road.

Skeptical Voter म्हणाले...

I've just finished reading an Elizabeth George "Inspector Lynley" novel. In the book a wealthy 60 something wife who dominates the family firm is confronted with proof positive that her husband has been cheating on her. Her husband who owes his position in the family firm to his marriage to her has had a long term mistress and a hidden second family.

The cheating husband wants to get back in her good graces. And she, contemplating what to do, says she has to decide whether her marriage (and husband) is a habit that she's willing to give up. Old habits are hard to break--even if the habit is George Conway.

Leslie Graves म्हणाले...

Kellyanne probably knows what sentences to put in books to make sure the book gets tons of attention. That sentence is catnip to me.

Jupiter म्हणाले...

By contrast, Trump calls Kellyanne "honey."

I suppose that is an unbearable patriarchal oppression of some sort, right up there with grabbing pussies. I would say that, as her employer, and one to whom she has shown consistent loyalty under often trying circumstances, publicly commenting on her ongoing private disaster was rather more insensitive.

I would guess that she doesn't divorce him because she doesn't do divorces, and he doesn't divorce her because she is an attractive and capable wife and mother and he is unlikely to do better. He's a fucking liberal, after all, it's all transactional to him.

The marriage between James Carville and Mary Matalin is even more amazing. They are political consultants from opposite ends of politics. Matalin worked for Ronald Reagan, managed George HW's campaign, then ended up working as Dubyah's assistant and Dick Cheney's counselor until 2003.

The Ragin' Cajun was absolutely famous for his advice to Bill Clinton. James made Clinton's campaign successful with coined phrases such as "It's the economy stupid", "Change vs more of the same," and "Don't forget healthcare."

Really?

"Alternative facts" was a phrase used by Kellyanne Conway, in which she defended White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer's false statement about the attendance numbers of Donald Trump's inauguration as President of the United States . . ."

“I want to talk about things that are quantifiable, not a bunch of metro riders and crowd sizes.”-- Kellyanne Conway

“He misread the Constitution in one crucial respect, thinking that all power not given to the federal government was reserved to him.” - Kellyanne Conway, “Here’s the Deal.”

For Trump, success always has a single father - himself. Failure has a hundred - everyone and anyone else. The media. The Democrats. The 'deep state.' Disloyal staffers. Prosecutors. Judges. Anyone who doesn't do his bidding or sufficiently sing his praises.

"If there's one thing we know about President Trump, it's that he lies and he cheats. Endlessly. And shamelessly. But still, mostly, incompetently." George T. Conway III

Gosh, I didn't know that practicing Merger & Acquisitions Real Estate law was illegal - and anyone who makes a hundred million dollars doing his lawyer job, whatever it officially was, would make Conway competent at the very least. He was paid by his employer, was he not?

On the other hand, it takes more than a sentence or two to describe Trump's illegal real estate and gambling activities that had him doing money laundering for the Russians and the mob while ripping off his customers, employees, suppliers, and the government.

He’s a gadfly flogging his Trump derangement endlessly while the real professional prosecutors have absolutely nothing to show for their seven years and counting obsession with proving Trump is as crooked as their side. Dry hole again! So sad. Yet like the Lincoln Project gaddy is willing to praise his enemies, even the witless fat bastard Conway, if it’ll just smear the bad orange man a tiny bit. Very sad.

The Hopeless gadfly: "On the other hand, it takes more than a sentence or two to describe Trump's illegal real estate and gambling activities that had him doing money laundering for the Russians and the mob while ripping off his customers, employees, suppliers, and the government."

Fresh off his/her/xer's hilariously moronic Alfa bank hoax lies, which followed the exposure of gadfly's even goofier continued collusion hoax lies, the pathetic gadfly retreats to his/her/xer's well practiced money laundering/casino crime lies.

It goes without saying there are dozens of other ridiculous and debunked lies gadfly has yet to part ways with as well.

Just this week we learned Hillary personally authorized a second and parallel Alfa bank hoax insertion into the government, via Joffe as well as Sussman, AND that the FBI leadership purposely lied to their Field agents regarding the provenance of this Hillary concocted ploy.

I suspect gadfly is having a very difficult time this week and he/she/xe cant help but to return to his Natasha Bertrand cult pronouncements like a dog to his vomit.
