Okay, I was looking forward to better things with Musk buying Twitter than what I'm experiencing.
I'm not a Twitter subscriber; I don't want to post or to follow anyone, or even browse the site. But I do occasionally click on Twitter links in these comments when someone posts one.
Since just this past week, when I click on a Twitter link, I'm on the site for about 10 seconds before a big 'Join Twitter Now' ad comes up and blocks the post. It doesn't have an 'X' in the corner to close the ad window so I can continue to read the post. I've never experienced this on Twitter before... anyone else seeing this happen?
Shirer's The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, listening to the youtube audio book, the n-word went by. Did I hear that right? Yes. I asterisk it out in accordance with the Althouse requirement (p397)
It was a painful scene, says the German interpreter. "For the first and only time in my presence, Hitler completely lost his head." And according to the British present, the Fuehrer, who soon stamped back to his chair, kept further interrupting the reading of the letter by screaming, "The Germans are being treated like n****rs . . . On October first I shall have Czechoslovakia where I want her. If France and England decided to strike, let them . . . I do not care a pfennig."
The question is, what was the word in German that has those precise English connotations? Why is there such a word in German? What was wrong with Scheisse?
Being treated like Slavs would just be equality there.
Pfizer just released 10ths of thousands of covid vaccines docs. You wouldn’t know it, however, what with Ukraine, the Depp vs Heard trial and the Supreme Court leak we’re swamped. We just don’t have time.
Fertilizer shortage? No problem, we will use manure from the cattle that are destroying the planet... right?
Europe blinks on a total embargo of Russia oil, putting off five dollar gas for a while, diesel still over $6, but we will see how long cooler heads prevail before the Ukrainians pull out more blackmail material on the White House.
Boris is freaking that the Russian's are winning unless NATO starts WWIII, which we are trying to goad Putin into starting. He also, according to the Ukrainian press, told Zelensky, who won with 79% of the vote on a platform of peaceful co-existence with Russia, but then unaccountably provoked Russia by moving on NATO expansion, Boris told him that the west would not sign off on any peace deal he might make to end the war and find a way to co-exist with Russia.
I wonder if Obama would have let himself be pushed around by the Ukrainian Nazis. Well, for one thing, he does not seem to have been dipping his beak in the Ukrainian corruption the way Biden has, by more than just a "smidgen,"
If you haven't read "The Guns of August," which is an account of how the world got sucked into WWI, and you want to sleep peacefully, don't, so you don't see us making all the same mistakes, but with different sartorial and tonsorial choices.
"Neger" was the legit German word for Negro (when Negro was a legit English word). I have heard older German-speakers refer to B/blacks as Schvartzes, but that may have been a local thing here (where most German-speakers were also Jews).
"Neger" was the standard German word of the day. Shirer may have been taking liberties. One suspects he often did.
The New Republic is saying that everyone who disagrees with them is Putting Our Democracy in Peril. They claim to be worried that Trump will steal the election, complete with a graphic of a MAGA thug stuffing the ballot boxes. Americans really do live in different realities today.
The Number One Suspect for Stealing Our Democracy is the head of Hillsdale College. C'mon. I'm not on the same page as Hillsdale about everything (that Conservative Movement stuff seems very last century), but really. They're what you're afraid of, TNR?

I'm not a Twitter member but I read lots of tweets.
On my iPhone I use a private window in Safari. It's not foolproof but works most of the time.
On my MacBook Pro (older iOS) I view Twitter in Chrome in an Incognito tab.
First it was that woman who would give Clinton a blow job because he would defend abortion rights. Now it is some guest on MSDNC who says they want to boink with the leaker and joyfully abort the resulting fetus.
What the radical pro-aborts don't understand about the polls showing most Americans support abortion is that most of the pro are only pro as a necessary evil because they have compassion for the plight of the woman with an unplanned pregnancy. Its a case of "if I pretend hard enough I won't have to admit that it is the killing of a human." I think 85% of the population would be sickened and appalled at the idea of getting pregnant just so you can abort a baby as a form of celebration. Most people know it's a life at stake. They are not pro-abortion, they are not really even pro-choice, they just can't commit to giving vulnerable women no options when there is a difficult circumstance, so they allow "birth control" abortions as a necessary compromise. The pro-aborts will score own goals here.
Paul-Otto Schmidt, who served as Hitler's interpreter for 20 years, routinely recorded Hitler's words. In this case, he wrote down what Hitler said after being told that the Allies had rejected the Fuhrer's double-cross that resulted in Germany's invasion of Czechoslovakia. So when Schmidt translated and recorded Hitler's rant, he likely used a common English word from Hitler's time but it is now unacceptable for use by Caucasians. Why would William Shirer presume the word to be outlawed when he wrote his epic in the late 1950s?
To the Left's Horror, Jordan Peterson Returns to Academia
"...Ralston College is honored to announce the appointment of Dr Jordan B. Peterson as its Chancellor."
"...Like Maher, Peterson is an expert at shredding liberal narratives around gender identity and pronoun use. He’s not for political correctness. He’s for freedom of speech. He speaks at length about the crisis in masculinity—all of which makes feminists seethe with rage. He uses facts, studies, and learned diction to destroy the cornerstones of woke political thought. It’s why he’s so hated. He resigned from the University of Toronto. He wrote at length about why he bolted in January, which unsurprisingly includes wokeness poisoning the world of academia.
There's a 4-minute video of Peterson explaining why he decided to accept the appointment to Ralston College:
https://youtu.be/nOTDgBNTNCQ
Perhaps more interesting is that Peterson looks and sounds a lot healthier than he was in the last few years.
As a bonus, there's also a fascinating hour and 42 minutes Peterson interview with a very smart but unfortunately also very woke female Brit: "The Importance of Being Ethical" recorded sometime during the Trump administration...in which Peterson smartly deals with her many misconceptions.
I was looking back at the Althouse archives to the early posts in 2004 and how the style of the posts evolved fairly quickly into what we see today. Interestingly, yesterday marked the 18th anniversary of the first pictures on the blog. And the first one was: $17,000 flip-flops!
One need not back the Kaiser to recognize that the Austrians were being idiots, the Serbs were being stiff-necked, and that France and Russia were coordinating to use the crisis to further their own ends.
This was scary! It was about, how young girls will start watching TikTik; and before you know it, they are presenting mental illnesses. Many slightly disturbed girls will start watching Eating-disorder, or Autism videos.. And then think they Have those disorders. The latest is Dissociative Identity Disorder
There is Even a young Tiktok watcher, that has convinced herself that she is a 70 year old retired law professor! She Even thinks she has an imaginary gardener husband

Thanks. You motivated me to fix the second image that had died and to make a note with respect to the third image, which is permanently dead.
Thanks for noticing the consistency of the style of the posts. There is an on-ramp period where I struggled to shorten everything, but I eventually accepted my tendency to do mid-sized posts. I think the point of view and attitude is weirdly uniform over time!
If there's a masculinity crisis, why is beard growing, testosterone loading, strength training and martial arts so popular?
Perhaps you fat couch slugs are not keeping up with the kids today and are merely projecting your unconscious guilt from self indulgent decline into decrepitude.
Ann, the assault on the pro-life building in Madison was repeated closer to home (for me, anyway): The Oregon Right-to-Life building in Keizer (adjacent to Salem, the state capital) was hit by Molotov cocktails the other day. See <A HERF="https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/oregon/articles/2022-05-09/molotov-cocktails-thrown-at-oregon-anti-abortion-office>the US News version. It also mentions two churches vandalized in Colorado.

In “most metal thing ever” news: A woman gave birth during a Metallica show in Brazil over the weekend.
The child was born to the song "Enter The Sandman".
She bought the tickets 3 years ago.

You must have been doing some serious moderating today Althouse.

Lovely!
I'll say something when I see what has been withheld since this morning--perhaps there's nothing more to say.
You have lovely cheekbones, Althouse.I love you and Meade, together.
I also, again- appreciate the sunrise photos:0)
On another note- I did find this:

It’s not like it wasn’t obvious.
Gas prices rose $0.10 from last Friday. $4.499 vs. $4.399. Thanks, Two Scoops and Adam Smith, WA-9. Two Scoop's war on petroleum continues.

The pointy heads in the Biden administration are marching us toward a beautiful world of perpetual peace. They will never get there. But they will find plenty of people and countries to cancel along the way.
You have aged well, Professor.
