"She was yelling at me, saying, 'Why are you whispering? You don’t have to whisper'... and I was telling her, 'Ma’am, he’s still in the store. He’s shooting.'"

"'I’m scared for my life. I don’t want him to hear me. Can you please send help?' She got mad at me, hung up in my face."

Said Latisha Rogers, quoted in "911 Dispatcher May Be Fired Over Handling of Buffalo Shooting Call/Erie County began an investigation after a supermarket worker said the dispatcher hung up on her when she called during the attack" (NYT).

OK, so the Buffalo Massacre will be the NYT/Wapo's new George Floyd crime story. AKA, the one story the MSM thinks all 300 million Americans need to know about, talk about, and know every detail.

More America Pravada propaganda. As for the 911 operator, why wouldn't you ask someone why they were "whispering"? You have to ask the question to know the answer.

hung UP on her??
So much for being able to dial 911 and order a pizza

Most 911 operations record every second of every call. Shouldn't take long to investigate this allegation. Awful, if true.

I can't even imagine being in that position and trying to get help. The 911 operator was wrong...and should NEVER have yelled at her. I would think there are MANY times when you have to whisper to get help and the 911 operator should have known that.

The mentality of those who run this country can be seen even at this low level of bureaucracy.

It is indeed awful if it's true, but not nearly as awful as neglecting to investigate and report on the reasons for the shooter's 'Authoritarian Left' political stance while trying to pin blame for the attack on conservative opinionists like Tucker Carlson. That's not just awful, it's politically evil.

We need to get to the bottom of this. I just sat through inclusiveness training that said saying "Ma'am" could be interpreted as a microaggression.

"Why are you whispering? You don't have to whisper."

Biden hears this every day.

Can we fire him?

Well, let's see:
You don't have to be "Yelling" at someone to know the answer
You don't have to "Hang Up" on someone to know the answer

As Bob Marshall said.. Shouldn't take lone to investigate

Answering calls is a low skill, low training job. You get what you pay for when hiring staff. This kind of stuff has happened before, but it's better to have a mediocre 911 system than nothing at all.

Ann Althouse said...

The call is recorded. Was the demand to speak up yelled? Was there a hang up? Obviously, they know already.

“Yelling at someone” today doesn’t mean what we used to think it means. A mere contradiction, when relayed to a third party, is often re-described as ‘so and so yelled at me’. It’s a terrible exaggeration.

Is there proof that the assertions made by Ms. Rogers are even true? 911 calls are recorded; let’s wait for the tape.

911 operator is a hard job. And People make mistakes. If she did wrong, she'll be fired. The best job is to be a Democrat Pol, you can fuck up and destroy lives and your dumbo voters will support you - no matter what.

So much for the gun control push if we have dispatchers - the weakest link in this instance - failing to do their jobs. The cops did show up though, so I am curious if this dispatcher's actions were impactful to the outcome at all. There were likely many calls to 911 that day. No excuse though - this dispatcher needs to be disciplined at the very least.

Here’s what happened. The operator made the snap assessment that if someone is under duress, they don’t go witty sarcasm on you. And if they do, like in the movies, it’s not spontaneous, which means it’s a prank. The operator could have said, ‘you know, you could get into trouble, making 911 prank calls’. Hanging up was the wrong move. But, I wouldn’t fire her over it.

Thus is Symbolism writ large brought to life! and smack Americans in their faces

!Can we say Trump supporters have been whispering their desperate pleas to [Media - world at large a la recorders of history] and in return been yelled at to stop such whispering!

Every so often there's a 911 horror story reported. I just hope they really are as few and far between as I have found them to be.

There will probably be questions about 911 dispatch training, shift management, hiring practices as well.

Hah, yet again I fall for a NYT link, forgetting they demand an account to see the story. Whoops.

The young man killed 10 people. There are news clips of elderly black women saying that "we're not safe and I'm afraid fo go into the store". Well, I think that there has been a total of ~60 homicides in Buffalo this year. Take away the 10 in the store--and that's still 50 murdered in Buffalo so far. You ought to be afraid to just be on the street in Buffalo.

I don't mean to say that these 10 people killed by one mentally disturbed kid isn't important. It is.

But the media pretty much ignores the mass slaughter in Chicago, New York City, and Baltimore--among other salubrious cities run by Democrats. Blacks killing Blacks just doesn't make the news--and mostly because it doesn't promote the preferred narrative.

The 911 call will be investigated.

I want to know how a white kid wearing camouflage clothing, a battle helmet, and carrying a long gun was able to walk across the parking lot into the store and nobody noticed anything odd.

Why do all the news stories say he was motivated by "replacement theory"? I read his manifesto. He was a green ethnonationalist Nazi, inspired by and just like the New Zealand mass murderer. So, sure, "replacement theory", but his ideological motivation was much broader than that. That would be like everyone saying that the Unabomber was motivated by "environmentalism". Well, sort of, but that would hardly capture the motivating idea. The Buffalo shooter was an actual Nazi.

"may" be fired? Why does she still have a job today?

Replacement theory is at the conspiracy core of ethno nationalist Nerdo Nazis.

Watch this critique of the Buffalo shooting claiming it's fake:

I'm sure the follow-up story will be that the caskets of the victims actually contain rocks.

The NY Post reported that the 911 operator was suspended pending a hearing. The incident does amplify the statement "When seconds count the police are minutes away." that pro-gun types are prone to say.

Bunkypotatohead said...

The previous town I lived in used 911 as the answering service for the local precinct. All callers to the police station were told to dial 911, regardless if it was an emergency or not.

If Buffalo operates that way, the 911 operators probably get 20 BS calls for for every true emergency and may get lackadaisical about it. Plus the phone answerers are probably diverse.

What is a "green ethnoationalist Nazi?"
