Ludicrous caption for "The pleasure principle: How the left wins the abortion wars/The right wants to punish sex — so the only way to win the abortion wars is make sex fun again."
That's a Salon article by Amanda Marcotte. It's a stock photograph, and they just used the stock photo description. I guess they needed a photo of people having fun sex.
How idiotic does this look?
I'm certain Salon is fine with offending those who morally oppose abortion. In fact, this article aims to insult them. It says so in text: They're not really about saving babies. They "want[] to punish sex." I'm saying the photo (and caption) are ludicrous because they represent Salon's idea of inviting its readers into the world of sex as fun.
Look at those models. They're so beautiful yet slightly drunk. They're sitting on the edge of the roof. They're ecstatic about a miniature speaker. They have a black friend, tucked away as far back as possible, with his head slightly bowed. The man in this foreground — Is he stretching in joy over whatever music emanated from the elongated rectangle wielded by the central figure? Is he the drunkest of the lot? Or is he lying there, arms outstretched, as our flight path into sex? Girl in Hat gazes back at us: Yes, we can join them. We can experience pleasure.
So... "the pleasure principle" — the argument premised on hedonism. I've seen this many times over the decades. If it feels good do it. Girls just wanna have fun. "The Difference in Women’s Hedonic Lives: A Phenomenological Critique of Feminist Legal Theory" by Robin West.
But let's read Amanda Marcotte and see how she calls the pro-abortion crowd to the activist tactic of "mak[ing] sex fun." It's not sex for the sake of sex. The headline says there are "abortion wars" to be won and asserts they can only be won through sex. And not just any sex. You've got to make sex fun.
That doesn't sound like it means the activists themselves should have fun having sex. It seems as though she's advising them to make other people feel that sex is fun. Just like that photographer setting up that photo shoot to demonstrate that a miniature speaker equals fun, the pro-abortion activists need somehow to use their skills to persuade onlookers that SEX IS FUN.
I do plan to read this article eventually, but first I want to read your mind. Maybe not your mind, but I'm pretty sure at least one of my readers got to the end of the previous paragraph and felt inspired to write a comment like: SEX IS FUN? How fun is it to have your limbs torn off one by one?
Marcotte quotes an Erick Erickson tweet:
Dear people upset Roe is dying. I want you to remember the feeling of dread you have right now. Now understand this is nothing compared to the feeling you’ll have on the day of judgment you think is a myth. Repent.
Marcotte paraphrases that: "That fornicators are scared right now because they are about to face the punishment of forced childbirth for their dirty sex-having ways."
She continues:
It's easy to see why progressives want to focus on the most dire outcomes from abortion bans. Images of dead women and starving babies are believed to create moral urgency around the issue.... The problem is that it's too easy for Republicans to dismiss the dire outcomes as fringe cases that have no impact on most voters....
By reframing the issue around sexual freedom, however, progressives would have an opportunity to make the discussion salient to people's lives and identities, which has a much bigger impact on voting choices....
It's another category of identity politics! The happy sex-havers are a voting bloc!
As I've argued before, voters want to be on Team Fun People instead of Team Sanctimonious Scolds. Republicans get this. That's why they rarely defend their rancid bigotry on its own terms, but instead try to pretend the debate is over fun-loving free speech jokesters versus the cancel-culturing "woke mob."...
That's a good point. Get the left to back off from it's repressive sanctimony. But it seems you only want that as a means to an end. It's a way to win the abortion wars. Do we get our freedom of speech back too, or is the "fun" thing for one issue only? Watch what you say, but have lots of fun sex. Ironically, that sounds like an old anti-feminist prescription for women: Don't talk. Fuck. And believe that you just love it.
With sex-positive feminists leading the way, there was robust public discussion about everything from porn to kink to issues of consent. There were even Slutwalks, as feminists stood up for their right to get laid without getting raped. Sex got so normal that it kind of got a little less sexy....
You know whats really unsexy? — abortion. But I guess Marcotte's point is that if people were thoroughly immersed in their own sexual pleasure, it might vastly overshadow the unpleasant collateral things — abortion, babies, rape, disease.
Unfortunately, in recent years, the left has largely abandoned the role of being the fun ones.
Remember when the lefties promised fun? Was that less than 50 years ago?
Instead, we all too often lean directly into the worst stereotypes of progressives as dour scolds who can't even take a joke.... Self-righteous preenings gets [sic] shares and retweets....
All the talk about coathangers and rape victims really brings people down....
So, as difficult as it may be to overcome the puritanical impulse baked into the American psyche, the left needs to talk about sex again. Not just the bad parts, but why sex is good and why people should be free to pursue their happiness.... Freedom and pleasure arguments may not score points on Twitter, but they win people over in the real world.
There's something of an idea here, but it's too much about partisan voting to truly express hedonism. And if hedonism is your credo, develop it with some depth of meaning. Otherwise, your sex-is-fun routine is as shallow as that stock photograph.

Make sex fun again? At least they didn’t go with Ultra MAGA Sex, because I’m trademarking that term…
I mean, who wouldn't associate killing an unborn child with pleasure.
Here are a few more things.
1. The best looking woman has a bunch of tats. She’s a rebel and wild in bed.
2. This same woman is holding the miniature speaker which is symbolic of a small and tight vagina.
3. The guy lying down of his back is symbolic of oral sex.
How did I do?
The Left wants to punish procreation.
Amanda Marcotte always writes the same article with minor variations. Totalitarian leftistism good/right wing nut jobs bad. The female version of John Stewart. Both purveyors of thin gruel.
If we have reached the point where sex is only fun because it allows people to abort ...
I spent a lonnnng time with the Left. Everything the Left promised as fun and good had turned to shit- expanded overweening government - shit, the sexual revolution - shit, a woman's right to choose - shit. For the sake of comment section brevity I'll stop. What more can they offer that isn't already in the bowl and ready to be flushed away?
Two fundamental incoherencies:
1. The recent "Pussy Hat" and "Believe All Women" eras were reactions against the left's blind toleration of reckless sex and drugs and rock and roll for the prior 50 years. Bring back Harvey Weinstein! Bring back Bill Clinton! Bring back Hugh Hefner and Playboy Clubs (I hear that Gloria Steinem's followers want jobs). Bring back the Age of Aquarius! Bring back free love communes! Please, please, please, bring back jiggle show nudist colonies! Jeffrey Epstein forever!
We'll see how well that flies with the current left voting bloc.
2. Make sex hedonistic. More. More. More. Go for it. Reopen the blood and fluid covered gay bath houses in San Francisco (as closed by the leftist city government in the 1970s). Spread HIV. Spread monkeypox. Spread them far and wide. More lockdowns! More social isolation! More masking! Wild, fun sex trends often start with the gay culture, so babies are an afterthought. In today's transgender era thereby promote spending resources on transgender swap surgeries and don't produce baby formula. The world NEEDs more pregnant men! Pregnant women? That's just being a TERF, Boomer!
This ideology will go extinct for lack of reproduction in ONE generation. Have fun while it lasts.
Yuppies or hipsters? They hate each other, but if you don't belong to either group you may hate them both.
Your phrase that stopped me was "a miniature speaker equals fun". I may have chuckled aloud. Well done.
Marcotte (I just googled) was born in '77. She's showing her age. I don't think Millennials and GenZ will find the juxtaposition of abortion and sex as fun. For them the world is grim. You can sell sex, but this is the wrong angle. Frivolity isn't really their jam.
BTW, this kind of flies in the meme of the troubled woman faced with a difficult and distressing decision.
"You've got to make sex fun."
MAKE it fun? Persuade people of that?
"Get the left to back off from it's repressive sanctimony."
Well, no one is going to believe them. When they pressure Princeton to rehire Katz, maybe.
"With sex-positive feminists leading the way, there was robust public discussion"
Right up to the point when progs discovered that they could use sex as a weapon. No more sex positivity.
"Remember when the lefties promised fun?"
Sooner or later, prog fun always turns into political BDSM.
"Freedom and pleasure arguments . . . win people over in the real world."
How do they work as "arguments" for abortion? With great freedom come great responsibilities. Pleasure should not result in harm to another. So?
Anyway, the notion that abortion opponents are somehow sex-negative scolds just illustrates prog obtuseness. But the obtuseness is instrumental: with enough effort, tarring pro-lifers may indeed "persuade" some people to avoid associating with those deplorables.
The only way the "abortion wars" are won is by the numbers; polls show that a majority of Americans support legal abortion--albeit the numbers go up and down depending on the circumstances--so, such supporters (and they are not just "the left") will have to work to get laws passed in their respective states officially making abortion lawfully available.
Yeah, sex is fun. Duh.
Breaking news, film at eleven!
And that gets us to "abortion is good"?
Say, what?!?
This argument should be used as an example in the dictionary entry for non sequitur.
Being lectured by Amanda Marcotte on "fun sex" is like being lectured on medical care by Nurse Ratched.
There's good abortion music. Kinky Friedman's Rapid City South Dakota.
The left made sex less fun when they decided to make it political.
Go onto a dating app in any city and see how many progressive women proudly declare "no conservatives/Trump supporters." Look at the way that universities have become obsessed with pushing increasingly byzantine rules and rituals regarding consent. Look at the obsession with public approval for whatever kink they have this week.
Addendeum: I left out public schools. For the most - depending on location - they have turned to shit.
I'm pretty sure it was Marcotte, before I stopped reading her, who said in print that she was engaged, planning a big wedding, and doing stereotypically girly things like poring over possible invitation designs, or some such shit says the stereotypical male. Her fiance--how my heart ached for him--wanted to watch the game on TV or something. No fucking way. He was going to do his part. These invitations will not choose themselves.
And then she takes a break every so often to advocate for fun.
It's an interesting post. I believe this is the real motivation of most people on the left who support abortion: It's an issue that can - indirectly - interfere with our lifestyle of thoughtless pleasure. So, we do not want people to think about the babies.
None of that led me to imagine that one of them would write an article that says it out loud, so out loud.
I suspect that sex itself has always been and still is fun.
The problem is all the bullshit that goes along with it these days.
Especially the getting sued years later because the woman has decided to withdraw consent for a then concensual act.
See the professor who had a fully consensual affair with a woman 20 years younger (but 29 at the time). She now claims it was not consensual because he "groomed" her into doing it.
Doesn't matter whether he ultimately wins or loses. The process is the punishment.
Yeah, that's the kind of thing that makes sex so much "fun"
Better to stick to sex with someone you love. (oneself)
John LGKTQ Henry
the only way to win the abortion wars is to make sex fun again
When did sex stop being fun?
Who made it not fun?
And why did they do that?
Interesting that Marcotte believes that women can make sex fun again. After all, sex is a team sport. Normally, it's the man who is to blame for bad sex. But now, Marcotte suggests, it's up to women to make sex better. You know, for Roe v. Wade
It's almost like Marcotte is suggesting that feminists need men voting for abortion rights. You know what she's suggesting? Appeasement! Make men happy. Give us orgasms. Shut up about that "me too" stuff. You know, for Roe v. Wade
If you're a feminist who thinks men are always coercing sex, don't you think it's strange that we never coerce abortions?
Sex is orgasmic and fun. Abortion never is.
If right-wingers passed a law making it a crime for a man to coerce an abortion, what would Marcotte say? Booooo, she would say. Women have a mind and a choice and they cannot be coerced, ever, it's impossible.
Is this purposely timed for the monkey pox pandemic?
Spread primarily sexually. Apparently by anal sex.

"a miniature speaker equals fun".
I thought she was talking about Robert Reich.
I sense the Left is losing their ability to frame debates as technology empowers individuals to seek out information and associates and validate the bullshit publications like Salon shovel out. The abortion issue now turns on when life begins. More accurately, the debate is about how long into pregnancy people will tolerate abortion. Tolerance for abortion is dependent upon many things but I don’t hear anyone on either side proclaiming that abortion adds to or subtracts from the “fun” of sex. Everything else changed since 1973! But sex is still fun even for Lefties who suck the fun out of everything. But birth control is easier than ever to obtain and use and available everywhere. Schools give it away. Obamacare pays for it! Some of it is even designed to work after the fact. That’s one reason these stupid libertine articles are ineffective. Women have options! Before during and after sex she now has options to “prevent” pregnancy.
So why frame an abortion argument as denying “fun?” Death isn’t fun even if you have accepted it and come to terms with it, so to speak. This is a Sex Squirrel ginned up to allow Marcotte to say “hey look over there!” I doubt this advances her cause even preaching to the Salon choir.
Snarfle the monkeypox!
There's no railing around the parapet and presumably no safety net below, which makes the rooftop party that much more fun and exciting.
There are no obvious trans people in their photo. How 20th century of Salon!
Typical modern left--sex isn't fun all on it's own. You have to make it fun. And as the picture of conventionally beautiful cis-het young people demonstrates, you make sex fun by rejecting everything the left has been telling us for the last 5 years.
Real people don't have to make sex fun. It already is.
jim5301 said...four guys - three girls. Who is the lucky girl?
I suspect it's four guys - two girls. The girl on the right is not open for business.
Sex as fun. Just as they are hyping up the Monkey Pox, which is going to remind people of the HIV disinformation (where they insisted everyone was high risk, when in reality it was mostly hedonistic gay men and women who had sex with bisexual men).
"Okay, girls, this is it. This is serious. We need to make sex fun again. Lucy, I want you to fuck an Incel every day. We need to recruit them, okay? And don't fall in love with an Incel, Lucy. Holy shit. We need numbers here. Big numbers. Seduce and go, seduce and go. Maggie, Maggie, Maggie! I told you. Hot pants. Where are the hot pants? That's no excuse. Lose the weight. Sit-ups, Maggie. For Roe v. Wade! Victoria, have you practicing fellatio? Fellatio. Oral sex, Victoria! No, not on you. On him! Oh my God. Somebody get Victoria a banana. You need to practice, girl. No teeth. Remember, sex is fun. Sex is orgasmic. We're serving a higher purpose here. Now go out there and fuck those men."
Once again this year, more Black babies will be aborted than born alive in New York City.
We know what Hugh Hefner would say.
Sexual liberation makes strange bedfellows.
No one on the left ever discusses the emotional impact of abortion on women.
Every man who works at the D-party hack rag should get a vasectomy. Or - they are sociopaths.
The conflation of sex and pregnancy is awfully strange.... They have to make sex (seem) fun because they want to defend the "right" to abortion? Has anyone shared the good news about contraception?
Has anyone shared the less-good-for-them news that married people have more and better sex then singles? How about the news that conception sex is THE BEST sex you'll ever have, and that sex during pregnancy, at least in the 2nd trimester and onward (creative sex, as the belly starts to get in the way) can yield unbelievably good orgasms for the woman as pelvic blood flow increases?
Actually maybe keep these pieces of news away from them. Those few (God, I hope they're few) who merrily use abortion as birth control might be tempted to take advantage of those emotional and physiological changes.
"Ultra MAGA sex."
I like it.
Sex was fun when the economy was good. Now we have leftist Chi com Pelosi economy.
Can't wait to see the Sex-Rave Monkey Pox outbreaks folded into these types of abortion arguments. You know it's coming...
Make Sex Great Again - at least until the next time the Dems are in power. Then get cancelled.
Don't taunt Happy Fun Sex.
Ignorance is bliss. Do they think the right never enjoys sex?? We do, we just don't murder the consequences of OUR actions selfishly. Monkey Pox is out there...WRAP IT UP...YOU could die. Nobody cares who or how many people you are having sex with as long as you stop the murders.
I'm curious about the woman on the right who's just staring into space, not enjoying the fun. Is she thinking about the Russia-Ukrainian war? Or maybe she's bored with her "fun friends"?
Anyway, the problem with Salon's approach is that liberal social values have won. Except for a few declasse baptists or Catholics everyone agrees with "Sex, drugs, and rock and roll". There's zero significant push back against "Sex as fun" or "Fun". The Moral Majority is no more.
When the ridiculous soccer moms put on pussy hats and parade through the streets, no one cares. There is no oppposition, they're fighting phantoms. The same is true of the Gays. This is why they've turned into merciless scolds and are physically attacking Chappelle because the didn't "Respect the LQBCTCZ" people.
It's essentially a confession of abortion used principally as a backstop for contraception. If so, what's really the problem with a 15 week limit on that?
They're not really about saving babies. They "want[] to punish sex.
The left never states the right's argument accurately.
It doesn't help their cause to do so.
If we've reached the point where sex has to be fun in order to keep abortion legal ... then it's quite a point we've reached. You can give Marcotte credit for recognizing that sex isn't fun anymore, but her response is ridiculous.
Early pro-abortionists had to fight against the idea that abortion was about hedonism and nothing getting in the way of the pursuit of pleasure. They had to prove to their potential supporters that they were "serious" and not just trying to live out the empty fantasies portrayed in magazines.
Abortion has nothing to do with sex. Birth control is about sex. When you can have sex with no chance of conception, then abortion cannot be justified. Murder due to negligent birth control!!!! Not a winning slogan.
---We can experience pleasure.
Almost like eating a salad.
I don't know how you people can assume the gender of the people in the photo, much less the sexual orientation of same.
Camille Paglia’s Sexual Personea detailed the explanation 30 years ago that a Free Love ethic always turns us humans into beasts that lack self control that leads to ….Violence.BIRTH CONTROL facilitates that Free Love. Abortion is a birth control. Now now self control is the God of fun, fun, fun.
Sex as fun has been the cause of so many social ills. You can have fun and not have sex. The problem with the whole abortion issue is that it became a default form of birth control, something the left swore it never was. But as soon as you tout sex as recreation, you have to accept that abortion will be part of the equation because other forms of birth control are a real downer, man. And this message does NOT resonate with the vas majority of Americans, most who believe that Abortion should not be used a s birth control.
The other view of sex is that it is the deep expression of personal intimacy which is far more satisfying then recreation, but the "scolds" of the left think intimacy and commitment are soul-crushing and oppressive. Cheapen something, and it becomes cheap.
“ four guys - three girls. Who is the lucky girl?”
The one with the tatted up arm. Tattoos on women, and esp more extensive ones, still indicate that she is a bad girl, or at least a little bad. Maybe not a little Tramp Stamp in the small of her back, but serious art that you can’t cover up without long sleeves.
The good and the bad is that the type of people portrayed here are unlikely to require abortions. It is a class issue. The reality though is that these are actors and models, playing parts, and struggling to pay the rent. That they are in that business in the first place suggests that their reality gets mixed up, too often, with wishful thinking driving their decisions. They, I think, could be thoughtless and careless enough to need an abortion.
I understand Rome fell because of things like this...
Citizens didn't want to defend their country..
Gratuitous orgies...
Laziness... drunkenness..
hypocrisy...
Times a-coming folks.
Wouldn't birth control be the way to this sexual bacchanal? Seems like getting an abortion would really harsh your hedonistic mellow.
The problem with Marcotte's premise is she believes abortion gave women the license to enjoy sex. Like women didn't enjoy sex before? The very best sex for most women comes from a man who has taken the time to get to know every inch of a woman's body and has given her time to know his. Ask any woman if she'd rather have a series of one night stands or spend the rest of her life having sex with Jamie Fraser, and you'll understand why Starz uses "Outlander" to sell its streaming service. The add-on to a long term sexual relationship is there's an understanding that sex produces babies, and a mutual understanding about that is reached before it does. Maybe some men prefer a different woman very time, and they would be Marcotte's audience for selling the idea that abortions are the reason sex is fun, but I don't really think it's a good marketing plan for women.
I seem to remember hearing 60 years ago: "Be good. And if you can't be good, be careful." But now people apparently think it's oppressive to have to be either good or careful. Responsibility is so tedious. Is that Amanda Marcotte or Peter Pan chanting "I won't grow up! I won't grow up!"
Does Marcotte really not believe that pro lifers are in fact pro life? Abolitionists don't care about blacks being free! They just want to punish slaveholders!
When there are 10 forms of birth control including Plan B, the only thing being punished is carelessness.
Free sex isn't free. I believe it makes it more difficult to form a stable marriage. STDs. Lots of cats. And abortion can damage the uterus such that pregnancy is not possible.
Does gay sex count?
If the goal is to promote abortion, it seems like it shouldn't
Maybe we need to make homosexuality illegal again?
I do not support that last, provided it doesn't become mandatory.
It would certainly be consistent with Marcottes message though.
John LGKTQ Henry
Assume for argument's sake that you believe it is morally wrong to bring an unwanted child into the world, AND that it is morally wrong to have an abortion. You might reason that you can wind up in a situation where you must choose between two morally wrong acts only because you did something morally wrong earlier in time, and that you had the voice not to do it. You might then conclude that it was wrong to have sex without being willing to have a child in case of pregnancy.
Sexual intercourse is wildly overrated.
Amanda Marcotte always writes the same article with minor variations.
I'm a bit surprised she is still around. She had a blog for a while. Have any of these people heard of birth control pills ?
A nice summary of the left today. Instead of engaging in the issue, just distract and say fuck it!

"The right wants to punish sex ...."
Last week I read an article the theme of which was that progressive lies are only part of the threat to the survival of the Republic. Another major factor is that many of them apparently believe their own lies.
A statement like this leaves one wondering if its author and prospective readers are evil, stupid or gullible and whether any of those choices bode well for our future.
"... make sex fun again." So responsible sex is not fun? Sex without the prospect of abortion is not fun? Who are these imbeciles and where do they come from?
It recently occurred to me what the killing of an unborn child actually is.
At its heart, it’s the ultimate act of rebellion against God.
And this remains true regardless of which God you worship.
Whether is the traditional God of the Bible, Visiting aliens, or the god of a billion years of evolution, natural select and the survival of the fittest.
Hard to find any leftist defending Roe v. Wade. Instead, there is article after article extolling the benefits of sex, contraception and even racially mixed marriages. Straw men.
'Make sex fun again'.
Oh, they can't mean that. The talking, the kissing, undressing, sweating, showering - it's tiring just thinking about it. Can't we just stream something?
Several ironies here. Shouldn't the message from the fundamentalist Christian be, never mind abortion, fornication will send you to hell. While from the hedonist writer shouldn't it be, sex is fun, but abortion is no fun, so don't forget protection ladies.
The photo they chose looks about as fun as one used in a cigarette ad from the 1970's. Is sex as much fun as smoking a Salem?
"You've got to make sex fun."
Type I fun, not Type III fun.
"The right wants to punish sex — so the only way to win the abortion wars is make sex fun again"
Another example (as if more are really needed) demonstrating the left's inability to understand or articulate the right's position- on abortion or anything else.
They're young, they're attractive they're hip, they're educated, they're woke, and they can't figure out how to use a rubber or a cup.
I'm certain Salon is fine with offending those who morally oppose abortion. In fact, this article aims to insult them.
I'm really not worried about Amanda Marcotte convincing anyone of anything, and the nonsensical insults are expected of her.
I'm pretty sure at least one of my readers got to the end of the previous paragraph and felt inspired to write a comment like: SEX IS FUN? How fun is it to have your limbs torn off one by one?
I'm sure you do think that. You don't have as twisted a conception of pro-lifers as Marcotte does, but you clearly do not have a clear view of them.
Sex is fun. Any pro-lifer would agree with that. Eating apples is fun too.
But such hedonism is hardly a sensical or persuasive argument for abortion.
Wasn't it "The Pill" that made sex fun after dreary millennia of procreative acts? Now it's supposed to have been the availability of late-term abortion, but somehow people forgot the "fun" part, so the young'uns need to break out the portable speakers? Perhaps we need to look a bit closer at the definition of "fun."
You know what’s never mentioned? Sex is also dangerous and risky. Young women especially need to know that. A one night stand with some guy you just met is flat out dangerous. You are putting yourself in as vulnerable a position (no pun intended) as it gets. I’m not talking about morality, fulfillment, etc. Just the sheer fact you are getting naked with a stranger who is inherently stronger. The risk is underplayed.
Dreams of her, his father: keep women appointed, available, and taxable.
That said, we demand to hold reproductive rites for social, redistributive, clinical, and fair weather causes. Rebel for extinction.
Here's to social progress: one step forward, two steps backward.
I can't blow up the image, but if it's, as it appears, a Bose Mini Soundlink, I would agree, they're a fun little speaker (I have one).
“Sexual intercourse is wildly overrated.”
Just an observation: you may be performing said act incorrectly, rhhardin.
Somewhat amazing that abortion is still such a big deal. I thought so many now are asexual, autosexual, pansexual, or engaging in some form of sex other than egg and sperm. One of the LGBTQ+ or heterosexual oral. And with all the types of birth control people focus on the most expensive, physically traumatic, emotionally wrenching, and morally questionable method. The only way to have fun is the one that leads to an abortion?
"The photo they chose looks about as fun as one used in a cigarette ad from the 1970's"
That's what struck me. Like a Martini & Rossi ad in an old copy of Playboy.
Anyway, that's a quality photographic Fisking, Althouse. In many ways, you're an exemplar of your generation. Old enough to remember sanity, but not terribly committed to it.
That photo doesn't look fun. It looks like they are half way through one of those college parties that desperate guys hope will turn in to sex.
The girl on the ledge doesn't want to be there, but the guy on the ledge invited her. They aren't dating, and the girl just figured out that getting to a libertine party is his move. He's starting to wonder if this was a good idea.
The black guy knows what's up. He was invited to get the ball rolling. He knows that he can have fun sex with all three of the girls, but later.
The guy with his arms raised doesn't know what's going on, and is hoping that the girl with the hat rolls on top so the fun sex can start. She knows that also, and isn't about to do that. You can see in her expression that she wants to get better friends.
The girl with the mini speaker thinks she's at the party because the speaker is fun, not because she's supposed to have fun sex.
The guy on the left is a virgin. The black tee shirt guy got him to let them on the roof so he could have fun sex and not be a virgin anymore. Virgin wanders when the fun sex is supposed to start.
Jim: The photo they chose looks about as fun as one used in a cigarette ad from the 1970's. Is sex as much fun as smoking a Salem?
Reminds me of the Newport ads from the same period (Alive with Pleasure!) which were famous for subtle depictions of violence against women.
ZZZZZTTTT wrong.
The Left loses the abortion war.
Sonograms show an itty bitty baby, inside mommy's tummy, at a couple of months.
Does Fun include Fun Free Speech - like graphic pictures of late term abortions, which all Dems support, with cut little limbs, cut arms, cut legs, cut off head?
It's actually true that abortions come mostly from fun sex - irresponsible sex - sex for personal pleasure, uncaring about the future, living in and enjoying the now, the WOW of a Great Orgasm.
Most pro-life folks have given up on slut-shaming - because they want the sluts to have the babies more than kill them. Give them up for adoption. Raise them as single mothers.
70% of Black kids have sluts for mothers - women who have sex with men that don't love them (enough to marry them). AND Black women have more abortions, on average, than non-Black women. Pro-lifers would rather all pregnant women have their babies, then choose to keep or give away.
Current and expected future gov't programs allow single mothers to live lower class lives thru gov't benefits. Not enough cash for drug & alcohol & cigarette & healthy food, all too often the healthy food is the first to be given up.
Society needs more support and jobs for low IQ workers, women and men both, and more support for marriage. Paying/ rewarding folks who get married would likely be a gov't policy that reduces poverty over the mid & long terms.
Amanda Marcotte is dumber than a sack of hammers but you can hardly blame her for the stock photo Salon slapped on her piece.
I’m old enough to remember when Salon, like Slate, published articles that proudly challenged conventional lib-left pieties, but reading them today is like slipping into a warm bath of thoughtlessness.
Marcotte continues her career of presenting that which nobody wants, nobody asked for, and nobody cares about. Dowd better watch out!
You know, there is a reason that God/nature made sex fun.
So that people would do it.
To perpetuate the species.
That's why the reproductive act is made fun.
'Ludicrous caption' for a ludicrous article. My God. How do people like Amanda Marcotte continue to get work as writers/essayists? Seriously, are there simply zero standards anymore? (By the way, this happens on both sides. There are just more of them on the Left).
Anyway- it was the Left who took the fun out of sex by making people have to agree verbally or with signature to do anything remotely flirtatious. The Left has created an entire generation of Beta men and multi-gendered whatevers to avoid sex. Now they want to claim they're the ones making it fun again?
Sure. Now make comedy funny again.
"At its heart, it’s the ultimate act of rebellion against God."
A rebellion common in every human society throughout history. (One could say that "rebellion against God" is what humans do.*) This does not make abortion a practice to be applauded or celebrated, necessarily, but it is to recognize it as a historically common practice. It will continue, whether legal or illegal; in the former case, it will be safer for the health, well-being, and lives of the women, in the latter case, more dangerous.
*(I'm being metaphorical, of course, given the nonexistence of any sort of actual god.)
They "want[] to punish sex."
That was Obama's take - they want to punish you with a baby for having sex.
When it's just nature doing its thing. Nature as punishment.
When you engage in baby-making activity, when you deposit pro-creative genetic material into a woman's reproductive tract where it might join with her own pro-creative genetic material, one should not be surprised if you end up making a baby.
The delusion that sex is wholly separate from pro-creation is what started this mess. Yes, you can make one's fertility dysfunctional, but sex, pleasure, orgasms, are all oriented by nature toward a specific purpose. And that purpose is not punishment.
It is only those who would call good evil who would think of it as punishment.
Speaking as a former apartment dweller, I am opposed to people playing their music where non-participants have to listen to it. I who merely wish to sit in my lounge chair and read a book on the shared rooftop or in apartment with an open window one floor below would be made miserable.
Ms Marcotte does seem to have a point about how the left should try to look like they are having fun. All those sad women in the red robes or miming killing their babies in front of St Patrick's Cathedral don't inspire emulation.
In regard to that photo: I naturally identify with these people's many neighbors, who are just trying to live their lives while drunken partiers blast tinny music through a cheap Bluetooth speaker all night. (Of course, anyone expressing annoyance would be dismissed as fun-haters who are just jealous because they aren't young, beautiful, and rich enough for their small friend group to have exclusive access to a pleasant urban rooftop.)
What other kind of fun requires you to distort and manipulate the body into doing something against itself? that you make the body deny itself? that does not accept the other person as he or she is, but demands that they alter themselves in radical ways?
Yeah, it's all fun.
But let's be open and truthful about what it is all about.
make sex fun again
And left out of this notion and of the entire conversation is "make sex love again."
I've always despised the phrase "making love," because invariably it had nothing to do with love. But sexual relations SHOULD be an act of love. Real love. The love that wants the good for the other, that subordinates oneself to the other, that treats the other as a person and not as an object for our own use, that goes beyond mere animalistic desire and accepts the whole of the other and gives oneself entirely to the other.
Its been 3 weeks since the leak.
Unfortunately, my prediction is coming true. Roberts has no intention of identifying the person that leaked the draft.
With todays electronics, tracing the leak was fully known within 24 hours. I did hear a novel theory that the draft was leaked to Biden, and then leaked from there. Not sure if I buy into that notion. What with the separation of powers bright line. If it did get to the Whited House, that is worse than a leak to the press, because is exposes collusion between the court and the Executive.

One reason in a long list of them explaining why not everybody enjoys living packed into a sardine can and illustrating the attraction of the suburbs, where you can have space of your own that you're not sharing with the rest of the neighborhood.
Have any of these people heard of birth control pills ?

could be one of many among the shortages Biden has wrought/wreaked
This was not a good photo to try to make the point that sex is fun. The people in the photo look like they're having fun, but they don't look like they're having sex. Showing people having fun doing something other than having sex actually undermines the point that sex is somehow a uniquely fun activity. It would be like using a photo of people hiking in the Grand Canyon to illustrate an article about how great Montreal is as a tourist destination. If the editors here want to portray sex as fun, they should use an illustration of people having fun while having sex, not having fun at a small party on the roof.
Where our the tryouts for Team "Help Avoid the Sorrow of Regret" and Team "Help Pick Up the Pieces of Shattered Lives"
"They have a black friend, tucked away as far back as possible, with his head slightly bowed."
And his arm around a white woman. An image strangely favored by the Great Replacers. If you were to ask, "Which pair do you think is most likely having sex in this image", most people would pick those two.
Of course, the most attractive person in the picture is the blonde on the right. And she's not interested in any of the others. She's smiling at someone who isn't in the picture. Her abortionist?
Terrible photo and terrible headline to imply that making sex fun (“again”) is the ONLY way to win the abortion wars.
The thrust of her argument is that being on the side of fun is how political contests are won and she comes to this conclusion by having observed that (she thinks) Republicans won on COVID and on cancel culture by positioning themselves as being on the fun devil-may-care side while the Democrats positioned themselves on the Nanny State side, which no one likes. The pattern she sees is, “To win, be on the fun side, not the censorious shaming side.”
Did Republicans actually win those fights?
"Not just the bad parts, but why sex is good and why people should be free to pursue their happiness"
Sure
Just use effective birth control.
it's not that difficult, if you're not a loser
You can tell that Amanda Marcotte is an old person. A dinosaur.
The kids today aren't having a whole lot of sex. At least not with other people. The hook-ups are way down, the ability to relate to people of the opposite sex is way down. Everyone relates to others only through their devices and not in a personal way.
As a result, despite Marcotte's best efforts, abortions are down.
Besides, it's just another Boomer thing. The era of the Boomers is over.
Ludicrous caption:
Amanda Marcotte-
Nuff said.
Sex isn’t fun. Sex is hot. 2adults not worried about the outcome of a sexual romp can get hot.
Also: 4guys/3girls. Jim, it’s 2022 w/mixed up roles. Who says she’s getting the lucky end of the… you know?
It's absurd to claim that all people who oppose abortion do so because they oppose sex. If that were true, during the last 50 years the anti-abortion cadre would have largely died out. No, we embrace sex. We don't oppose abortion to "punish" people who have sex. We oppose abortion to save the lives of unborn children.
Tell me at how many weeks of gestation an unborn child has earned the right not to be killed?
(You know, it seems to take us several decades to execute people who have been convicted of multiple homicides. How long should we take to execute a person who hasn't committed a single misdemeanor?)
They need to be showing how to make abortions fun if they want to get their point across.
The people making the fetus already figured out the easy part.
I know I commented, but I can’t seem to find it.
I’ll start over.
Rh is right, sex is not fun.
I would never use that word to describe sex.
Sex is hot. It’s pheromones &needy as hell. Like, right now.
Or, it’s clumsy, not satisfying, perfunctory… bait.
When a woman would never contemplate an abortion- the above doesn’t change. Sex is more emotionally weighted if the consequences are more serious. A wicked rush. And maybe a subconscious yearning… and maybe being religious and aware of the impact of sex and a new life, sex is even hotter.
As to who pairs w/whom, yeah- pretty sure we’ve got it all wrong. Is the grouping implying an orgy? Then everyone gets every body- somehow.
