Unlike Libs of TikTok, I select things from TikTok just to delight and amuse.

1. A little boy has learned to stop and smell the flowers.

2. Learning to speak with an American accent.

3. Just a really good looking sheep.

4. That trout can't believe it took the bait against... so tedious.

5. Can a schnauzer distinguish the "go" command from "o," "g," and "goat"?

6. Birds get mad.

7. The menu at the Amadeus Café has musical notation on it that some people can sing.

8. French is funny when literally translated.

9. Ingenious cabinetry.

Got to go with the Lamborghini doors on the cabinet. The Flintstones riff has been making the rounds for years - if you can sight sing, this shouts at you from the page.

...but the dog wins. I missed that. DGD.

I find Libs of Tik Tok very amusing. Perhaps I'd feel differently if I thought these mental cases were actually dangerous, but I know they will implode, as the left always does, before they break anything important. All they have is passion. Passion without discipline is like hitting the gas while the car's in neutral.

Althouse, je suis amuse'. I would whatever the opposite of dox you. Eudoxia?

Thanks for posting these. I don't know Tik Tok and I don't think I want to, but I'm glad you're curating.

2. By George, she's got it!

Love the cabinetry. Cute dog. Good English teacher. 3DOthers kinda boring.

That cabinet is cool I would pinch my fingers. A lot. Also, I don't want to always have to open it all the way to get something out.

I don't think the music was a mistake.

The dog is smarter than some people I know.

All languages have this quality of odd idioms in common speech, including English. Ionecso's The Bald Soprano captures it pretty well. It's why paraphrase is preferable, so that you don't find yourself lusting after the Polish people.

8. Mark Twain ran across a French translation of his story "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" and translated it literally into English. He then published all three versions under the title "The Jumping Frog in English, Then in French, Then Clawed Back into a Civilized Language Once More by Patient, Unremunerated Toil."

The schnauzer is amazing, and the mad birds made me laugh out loud!

As much as people hate politics, it does keep us interested and does give us a focus. Random comic TikTokers not so much.

Thanks AnnofTikTok!
I like a Coke and a hamburger too (#2) even though it probably contributes to climate change.

I can understand how this can get addictive and become a total suck of time. I will keep staying away.

all good. the cabinet made me lose my mind.

Ann Althouse ayon kay ...

"I can understand how this can get addictive and become a total suck of time."

This is true, but it's also relaxing and meditative in a way that is, for me, superior to watching television. I mean, it's not like watching an excellent movie or TV show on television, but if you're just watching TV to relax and pass the time, you might do better flipping through TikTok.

Ann Althouse ayon kay ...

These days, I have to force myself to watch television. I feel as though I do not want to be bothered and would rather look at TikTok or read websites when I just want something for down time.

Leland ayon kay ...

I find Libs of Tik Tok delightful and amusing to the extent short form entertainment can be.

farmgirl ayon kay ...

Althouse takes my time- lol. A lot of reading and links provided and I’m slow at it. I love it, though.

I felt the kids w/English were maybe Americans and knew their Mother’s tongue? Having grown up w/so many native French-speaking relatives and folks in general- I love the accents and “broken” English as a 2nd language. And as they all pass away- I grieve for my personal loss of loved ones and my youth.

C’est la vie.
(ps- I almost failed French -and I even have dreamt I was fluent in it! I could hear myself speaking in my dream& was amazed!

Also: having had so many foreign priests, their English has endearing grammatical idiosyncrasies that I appreciate. To “say sorry” to someone takes the sting out of our failings, for example. Nigerian, Tanzanian, Indian, French- the Philippenes.

Lurker21 ayon kay ...

French is a very decayed form of Latin. My impression is that they had to invent a lot of things on their own to replace what was lost. They had to improvise a lot of workarounds for things that had been lost. Maybe they also fell back into old Celtic habits. So it's a very strange language, but English is a very decayed form of its Germanic roots and many things in our language probably strike foreigners as strange.

This tickles me- it’s a French song.

farmgirl ayon kay ...

Idk, Lurker22. Decayed way to dirt, maybe heh!! It’s the tongue rolls. Not many of those in any Latin I’ve sung!

Leland ayon kay ...

So I looked at a few of the links to Tik Tok that are posted here and it just seems creepy to me. What type of person watched Tik Tok and links to what they found interesting somewhere else?

EAB ayon kay ...

The birds made me laugh out loud. Thanks for that.

Lance ayon kay ...

My favorite literal French translation:

Qu'est-ce que c'est que ça?

What is it that it is that that?

Lance ayon kay ...

@Lurker21

Modern French evolved from the language used by the Franks, a Western Germanic people related to the Angles, Saxons and Jutes. But unlike their cousins who invaded what would later be called England (whose proto-Germanic dialects would later be called Old English), the Franks occupied the northwest continental provinces of the dying Roman Empire, and adopted the Empire's day-to-day language, what is called today the Vulgar Latin, and heavily inflected it with their own proto-German dialects, creating what is known as Old French. Note the other romance languages (Italian, Spanish, etc) also evolved from the Vulgar Latin, but were more or less influenced by different early Germans, or by Basques, Arabs, Slavs, etc.

Also I would not characterize French or English as being "decayed", but rather "adapted" or "evolved". All languages do this to fit changing needs.

ccscientist ayon kay ...

Lots of languages sound funny literal translation. The Persian for a kind of soup with a beef shank is "ab gousht" literally "water meat". English is a mash-up of latin and germanic roots, which have incompatible grammar and accenture. Plus we stole words from all over. It is a nightmare.

ccscientist ayon kay ...

Animals getting mad: it is funny because we don't expect it. Saw a vid of a croc that missed his lunge for an antelope. It had a tantrum, thrashing in the water.

farmgirl ayon kay ...

Ace does it- a lot of ppl do it. Libsoftiktok do it.
So I don’t have too!

farmgirl ayon kay ...

Oh, Leland.
Hahah. :0D

...like Libs of TikTok, I select things from TikTok just to delight and amuse.

Delightful, and amusing, a personal reverie, once, twice, even a gay old time in which we all partake under the heading of news, education, socialization, governance, etc.

My brother would have performed the whole Flintstone's song with lyrics as soon as they gave him the menu.
