Sometimes it snows in April...

Looks grim, but it was nice — big snowflakes, fog on the lake, almost completely deserted. I enjoy the gentle light and the cool air. Warm snow is so much better than cold rain. You enjoy your climate, and I will enjoy mine. The days of temperatures in the 30s and 40s are delightful!

Talk about the weather — or anything you want — in the comments.

The lake pictures were taken at noon. Here's the view of the backyard at 8 in the morning:

We got about an inch of accumulation here in NE iowa (so, maybe 4 inches of snow since it melted as it hit)

My snowy walk today was very pleasant.

Swimming in a master's zone championship this weekend. The vibe is awesome. A group of athletes spanning from 18-80+. From slowpokes to Olympic team contenders. Cheering each other on. Walking around three quarters naked and wet all day and nobody caring. A real celebration of life. No Bad Days

I saw morning snow flakes in June, in Alpena Michigan, one time.

Remember when we had a first family we could respect?

Yesterday I woke to snow covered lawn. Within a couple of hours it was gone. I decided to go to the store. Just as I left the house it started snowing again (big fluffy flakes) and snow recovered the lawn in about 10 minutes. 30 minutes later it was gone. Then I remembered even Mother Nature loves an April Fools joke.

Yes, ice is still in Tawas Bay.

I love a "warm" snow. We once had an April snowstorm in Pennsylvania after the forsythia and the early daffodils had already begun blooming - so beautiful to see the bright yellow flowers shining through the thick but evanescent snow!

One of Memphis's biggest snows was in early April. 10" IIRC, but wasn't here long.

We Had the great big flakes, Ann talked about recently. Not really any accumulation. Temp was 32F But 55F four hours later.

I was at a Mariner's game in June some years ago when I saw snow coming down on the roof of the Century Link Event Center. It didn't stick, of course.

There have been some might cold games at Safeco Field/T-Mobile Park. The combination of temperature and wind can make that park hellishly cold. One game in a past April was so cold that only the die hard fans stuck it out to the last out in the ninth inning. The ball park was pretty much empty by that time.

Howard, good luck at your swim event. Have fun!

This is a Twitter link playing a Tik Tok about the impossible non-rules of spelling and pronunciation in English that cracked me up--several times--and made me think of Althouse given her love of etymology and such.

I'm not on TikTok but it looks like the creator is @sahnibravo

Cheers!

Great big flakes around CNY is usually, but not always, lake effect. Nice thing about great big flakes is they're usually light, dry, and fluffy, and can be easily shoved off a driveway.

After 2 years of absence due to the dreaded covid, the what's going around has reappeared in my area of the world, and possibly in yours. 10 people I know in a week, which is more than people I know personally who have had the dreaded covid. All with the same initial symptom followed by the same sequence of what happens. Day 1, lots of sneezing. As in- lots of sneezing, often several times in a row. Like sudden onset allergy season. Day 1 for me I checked the allergy forecast and it said moderate tree pollen, and I assumed it was that. It wasn't. Day 2 lots of mucus starting up, maybe a headache- headache was there for me and my wife. Day 3- the worst. Lots and lots of mucus. Don't bother with an antihistamine or nasal irrigation- the onslaught will overpower them. You're going to be breathing through your mouth a lot. Day 4 you start feeling better. Typical virus from 7-10 days for full recovery. None of us have hit 10 days yet. It just started going around. Day 6 I was able to do a full 25 minute on the treadmill, 6% grade, 3.2 MPH, with my heartbeat staying within the exercise range. Day 5 I stopped at 15 minutes because my HR was going to 157+. 154 is the highest it should go during exercise according to my age. Say 2, 3, and 4 I didn't bother getting on it.

So all the people I know who've had this progression did not get it from each other. Which means they got it from someone else, which means it's both A. widespread by now and B. extremely contagious. My wife and I got it from our son when he was home last weekend. He's certain he go it from a coworker- about 250 miles away in the the next state over. And he was barely in the house, going back and forth to my daughter's home and hanging out with friends that weekend. So it appears to be far more contagious and easier to catch than the dreaded covid. (But does it kill the elderly...?) My coworker and his son? He has no idea where they got it- but his grade school son gave it to him. And I described the symptoms and onset to my relief tonight- his 20 something daughter told him not to visit today- she had the sneezing yesterday and feeling worse today and didn't want to give it to him...

So- any of you out there experiencing this particular what's going around? Or is there another what's going around going around near you?

nope, not me... But Sounds exactly like what my sister in Chicago got last week in Utah
AND sounds like what my friend got two weeks ago in iowa. I haven't seen my sister since Xmass, so i'm not the vector

I can't figure out where you're at iowan2? A few days ago you posted that you lived in NE iowa (far corner, even). I'm assuming that was a typo? and you meant N WEST iowa?

“Talking Heads’ Tina Weymouth Recovering Following Car Accident

The accident occurred when Weymouth was in a car driven by her husband and fellow Talking Heads founding member and drummer Chris Frántz when they were struck head-on by a drunk driver who was driving on the wrong side of the road on Post Road, U.S. Route 1. “Incredibly, we walked away from the collision,” said Frántz in a Facebook post… Frántz shared that while Weymouth, now 71, is in a lot of pain she is expected to recover over time. “I give thanks to our guardian angels,” he added in the post, “and to the Ford Motor Company for building a car that protected us from getting killed.”

We would be FOOLS to confirm somebody this extreme. THIS is heartbreaking. She's a monster.

"In the eight child-porn cases that came before her court, former D.C. District Court Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson heard horrifying details of “sadomasochistic” torture of young kids — including “infants and toddlers” — yet challenged the disturbing evidence presented by prosecutors and disregarded their prison recommendations to give the lightest possible punishments in each case, according to transcripts of sentencing hearings obtained by the Post."

Meanwhile, the poor guy, who turned the Hunter Biden Laptops into the FBI, (which they destroyed or "lost" since) has been abused by Progressives for DARING to do the right thing. They were throwing rotten vegetable and feces at his shop, which stopped people from coming in. Progressives really ARE the most inconsiderate, hateful, divisive people in America. https://redstate.com/bonchie/2022/04/02/man-who-exposed-hunter-bidens-laptop-shares-disgusting-details-n544267

Our virus up in the NEK has those symptoms- plus a fever &a cough. We didn’t go to the drs. Idk if it was Covid, either. It took about a week for my daughter, I had it about 3dsys and am still blowing my nose a week later. I’ve always used Coricidin b/c that’s what my Mom uses. And chills- I 4got chills. None of the symptoms were especially debilitating, for me.

There are other viruses going around, too. My niece was having difficulty breathing and it was annoying her so she went to the dr- and was told:
It’s a virus, you’ll have to ride it out.

Imagine that.

So, here’s to a full recovery after 2yrs of vigilance! I suppose the challenges are good for our immune system!

Snow? Viruses?

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.

We had a night heron show up last weekend and hang around our house for three days and two nights. A yellow-capped night heron. We were sorry to see this unusual bird move on sometime last Tuesday. But Saturday we came home from an outing and there he was on the patio. Stayed there the rest of the day. These are not common in PA; they're on the state's version of an "endangered" list because the number of known nesting pairs in this state is so low. They are not otherwise considered endangered as a species, fortunately. The books describe them as "solitary" and "secretive" birds. Quite cheering to see this one come back again after a few days away.

Our family had the omicron version, we're pretty sure, right at the peak (at least in MD) around New Years. We're reasonably sure that the daughter-in-law brought it home from work, but shortly all of us had it. Everybody but the 2-year old was vaccinated and boosted. It started with a bit of a sore throat and cough, and was just mostly a head cold, with slight lung tightness. It lasted about a week, although my nose was upset for weeks.

The "newer" BA.2 a variant of omicron, is supposed to the similar in virulence, but even more infective. If you haven't got it, get it soon, and get some antibodies to something besides the rapidly evolving spike protein. They're already trying to scare us with a newer variant, XE that's supposed to be even more infective.

Imagine how they could scare us if they looked this hard at all the various cold viruses running around.

We’ve had on and off big snowflakes the past couple of days. Covered the lawn, which is now bare again. More expected tomorrow. People up here in NE WI talk about the big blizzard in 2018 right around April 15. Almost 2 feet of snow. It happens. I remember living in NYC and leaving for a trip to CA in the first week of April. Day I left had big snowflakes coming down. When I got back a week later, all the trees had bloomed. Spring is the most entertaining, fickle season. I too like 30 and 40 degree weather. But my husband complains about it, even though he’s the native.

I think desire to catch any of the Covid variants should be based on level of confidence in natural origin/predictable long term consequence of infection, including post "vaccination".
Alternatively, one could take the opportunity to aggressively prophylax.

I keep hearing "nothing but a headcold", and for the actual duration of the sickness, this wasn't far from the truth in my case. However, (and it's a big HOWEVER) the after effects may not be so benign. I run pretty high mileage and track my fitness methodically, so I have good objective data about heart rate and fitness on a day to day basis. My running speed dropped over 2 minutes per mile after Covid while my effort level skyrocketed. All this while feeling pretty much fine during normal activities. I was running 10 minute miles at a heart rate of 155-160 after Covid, where previously I would have been running 8:15 - 8:30 miles at 135bpm. This is a HUGE loss of fitness! It's been 12 weeks since I got the damn thing now and I'm running 9:30 pace at 140bpm, and got my milage up to 50mpw, but this was no head cold, that's for sure!

Walter, agree, everyone SHOULD take the opportunity to aggressively prophylax. Thar's pretty much what I do, minus the large zinc. My multi has the recommended MDR of zinc, and we eat lots of red meat, the primary dietary source.

And I've mentioned nasal irrigation here before. Been doing it for well over a decade. For allergies. Added xylitol to the rinse (according to my Amazon purchases) middle of 2017. Added erythritol during the covidiocy. And often twice daily upon rising as before, and immediately before bed. When I said whatever's going around is extremely infectious? This is the first viral URI I've had since the middle of 2017.
