Facebook prods me to vote — with racialized hands of different sizes.

IN THE COMMENTS: LordSomber says:
Just more "Corporate Memphis" or "Humans of Flat" graphic design. Uninspired and generic, so naturally the tech giants use it to death.

And RideSpaceMountain says:

I hate...HATE...this animated cutesy emoji-art that seems to be infesting corporate America and tech companies in the last few years. It is the definition of infantile and gives anyone that cares to pay attention a real insight into the minds and psychology of people that make, advocate, and use it.

It is low-effort, grooming-adjacent clown-impressionism that should insult anyone it's directed at who's over the age of 16. It belongs in gradeschool workbooks, or in the candy wrappers handed out to children by men in strange vans wishing to disarm their prey.

Disgusting.

When I see that style, I think of the iconic 2012 video, "Dumb Ways to Die":

ALSO: Here's the Wikipedia article for "Corporate Memphis" — "a flat, geometric art style, widely used in Big Tech illustrations in the late 2010s and early 2020s."

It is often considered to be uninspired and dystopian.

Common motifs are flat human characters in action, with disproportionate features such as long and bendy limbs, minimal facial features, and bright colors without any blending...

The style has since been criticized for being generic, overused, and attempting to sanitize public perception by presenting human interaction in utopian optimism. Illustrators working in this style refer to it as flat art. It is also known as the Alegria style, Big Tech art style, or Humans of Flat.

"Alegria" is specifically the Facebook version of the style. Wikipedia links to the designer's webpage, here:

Facebook approached us in 2017 to do a complete redesign of their entire illustration and animation ecosystem. We assembled a team of illustrators and a year later, Alegria was born. Alegria is Spanish for ‘joy’ which is apropos — that’s how we felt creating this fun, playful world....

We designed and built a scalable system rooted in flat, minimal, geometric shapes. The figures are abstracted — oversized limbs and non-representational skin colors help them instantly achieve a universal feel....

The flat Alegria style has emerged as a simple, scalable, and image-softening tool for tech companies.

I'm so glad I read that. I feel much more effectively defended against something that has been a low-level irritation to me for a very long time. We are the real humans, the humans of dimension, and we must oppose the Humans of Flat!

Notice how they specifically made the heads small and the limbs idiotically inflated and tubular:

That's what they think of us, and that's what they think is fun.

Facebook needs these kind of visible public service announcements to mask their truly partisan, behind the scenes thumb-on-the-scale endeavors.

I'd even be interested to know whether one's FB 'ideological profile' influences how such alerts are received.

Tell Facebook to send us some of them Zuckerbucks so we can help save “our democracy.”

David Begley - "A Black vote counts more than a white vote."

Why did you capitalize B there, but not w?

Achilles said...

Well. Black and Hispanic people are not fans of all the pedo pushing and transgender grooming the democrats are rolling with right now.

Shocking I know.

Democrats are going to get absolutely wiped out in any real election.

I wonder what crisis they will seize on to stop it from happening in November.

Only the mail in black votes. Actual Black people don't like democrats much.

Also, big hands mean big fingers.. And You ALL Know what That Means! Big Gloves!

It won't matter if you vote or not....it all depends on WHOM is counting the votes and whom is PAYING for the votes.

Is it Madison Wi? Is it a Tuesday? There’s an election.

Mark Zuckerbot has plenty of money to bribe election officials to count the votes his way. Also, to create the votes that he needs to get the result he wants. Like something out of nothing.

I used the same capitalization convention used by the AP Style Manual.

David Begley said...

AP News, July 2020, “AP’s style is now to capitalize Black in a racial, ethnic or cultural sense, conveying an essential and shared sense of history, identity and community among people who identify as Black, including those in the African diaspora and within Africa. The lowercase black is a color, not a person. AP style will continue to lowercase the term white in racial, ethnic and cultural senses.“

Your state also has no right hands, as far as the ad is concerned. EVERYTHING must be the left, anything not left is verboten.

Really, you would think that Facebook should not even mention the word 'election', let alone send their nudge emails to anyone. I would think this invites some additional oversight on their next move.

And there will be a next move from Facebook. They cannot help themselves.

On Facebook, it's a moving image, with the hands moving up and down, but the size differential remains the same. The message that the black vote should count more is distinctly expressed. Forget the old "one person, one vote."

Critter said...

I never get leftist/Democrat messages at all. What did you put on your FB page to make them think you are sympathetic to their side?

Original Mike said...

The only contested election for me is one school board seat and I can't find candidate statements. Usually I'd read about the candidates in Isthmus but I just tried and Isthmus demands my email address first. So I guess I'm not voting.

It all makes no sense except there's trouble and there's a woman involved. It's a return to tradition. It's designed to make no sense.

I can't believe I never saw "Dumb Ways To Die" before. I was online a lot in 2012. I was reading this blog.

So I check it out, since our host linked it, and I hear my daughter from the next room: "Hey, who's listening to 'Dumb Ways to Die'?" And as we finish it together my son comes in singing it.

I would have thought I was pushing the envelope a little if I'd introduced them to it, but they saw it a couple of years ago.

Maybe they're trying to say 'It's more important than ever to get out the Black vote. Vote early, vote often."

"Corporate Memphis"

Hmmm; I recognized the style, but had never heard that term. After a bit of research it turns out that it has a Dylan connection!

Enjoy these relatively benign reminders while they last. Soon a robot bug with megaphone will be scuttling up and down your street yelling, "Wash your hands! Save your lard! Vote on Tuesday! Ann! Do you hear me, Ann? I'm talking to you! I see you haven't had your booster this week, Ann. Your neighbors have all had theirs, Ann!"

Wasn't there a big controversy just a few weeks ago about the yellow thumbs up being racist?

All people are equal, but some are more equal than others.

As the comments, show, the "grooming" is backfiring a bit. But until the Althouses of America act on their irritation to resist, consistently, progs will keep at it.

I've noticed that. They move the really ugly issues to an August.....or April election when no one is thinking about voting.

Seattle also has a nice top-two primary system in August with the final run-off in November. Only the top-two primary winners are allowed to advance to November. Everyone heads to the beach, or mountains in August, and they forget to vote.

Let me tell you about the quality of candidates this has produced!!! We had the pervy Ed Murray as Mayor, and he had the state foster care system giving him boys to molest.

Our last homosexual mayor didn't run for re-election after her city sponsored summer-of-love, BLM-occupation in the central business district failed to flourish.

This is a great thread. I have to create figures for my work which involve movements. I used to use black and white photos, but in the recent update I switched to icons. The icon have to be correctly proportioned. I found when using photos, people got too caught up in the detail and couldn’t imagine the movements. Also icons stopped the “Why are all your models white?” Issue. They were my family. Also I made a video about issues of posture in children. To get around the diversity issue I made the character a monkey. You guessed it: the user had to take it down due to people accusing me racist dog whistling. Unbelievable.

In Cottage Grove the only contested election is for County Supervisor District 36. For uncontested positions I usually write in my own name.

The illustrations sort of remind me of Yellow Submarine the movie.

i kinda doubt, that they'll be scuttling up and down the street..
I'm assuming, that Each of us will be assigned Their Own Robot Bugger; that will follow us Where Ever we go (including, into the voting booths (and bedrooms, bathrooms, et. cetera.

I have to think Identity Oversell is actually a tool to foster grievance and keep Blacks and Gays on the Donk plantation. Imagine your disappointment and anger as a Black woman when you find out you’re not the affluent, creative person with a Hello Fresh account and kicky fashions from Saks as promised by 75% of the commercials on Hulu and Peacock. And no amount of hype will ever still that kernel of unease that even the most ardent Prog feels in the presence of trannies and which must be palpable to said tranny. The Left’s promises arrive knowingly pre-broken. It’s how they stay in business.

Dylan connection.

Not as important as the Elvis connection. Twenty years ago even Wikipedists could have made the connection, but here at the end of the Modern Age all cultural allusions have to be to online phenomena.

Don't care for the original Memphis style, and even less for the degenerate spawn.
