"Henry Hoeft, a 28-year-old former U.S. Army infantryman and steelworker from a small town outside Columbus, Ohio, was compelled earlier this month to leave his young son to fight in Ukraine..."

"... where his father’s family has its roots. After fundraising online and saying his good-byes, Hoeft packed up some of the combat gear he used sporadically in recent years as a member of the boogaloo boys — the extremist, anti-government militia that rose to notoriety in 2020 — and took the route that has become common for the thousands of ex-military types attracted to the newly established Ukrainian foreign legion...."

I'm reading "The Beefing Boogaloo Boys of Ukraine" (Intelligencer).

Here's Hoeft's beef:

Is it some kind of big surprise that a white supremacist would go to fight in Ukraine? Today though, Nazis and white supremacists are the flavor of the month, so I guess it is true that "every dog has its day." Here is a comedy bit from Zelensky back in forgotten times.

So, because this guy is allegedly a right wing extremist we are not supposed to be sympathetic to the fact that he was lied to?

How much do you want to bet that Antifa and BLM little pussies wouldn't have the balls to do this?? They are so brave beating people up in America, because they know the Progressives in charge will protect their asses..

This fucking fuck has a really fucking monotonous way of fucking speaking. He fucking needs to work on his fucking vocabulary.

My takeaway question on the article is who "compelled" him to go to Ukraine?

It doesn't say he "felt compelled". It says "was compelled". I'd be curious how and by who?

Americans live in a very cushy environment. We do. By world history standards, we have it better than anyone has ever had it. Ever. Even the worst off of us have TVs, cell phones, and other things that would be considered luxuries in some parts of the world. From this environment we get all harried, exorcised, and turn into activists for causes in other lands. People left here to join ISIS. They've left here to go to Ukraine. And they always seem surprised that war leaves things messy, short-supplied, and dangerous. This ain't no Boogaloo Boys meeting somewhere in Ohio. This is not the well-equipped and somewhat managed US Army. This guy is a former infantryman and he is surprised that a citizenry caught in a sudden war, with limited supplies, that has required it's own male population to stay behind and fight, is not giving him a warm bath and more ammo? Just what did he think he was getting into?

America is due for a major struggle. Just to bring us back down to the reality of the rest of the world. I'm not asking for it. I think nature, as in human nature, will bring it to us at some point. I once thought the rest of the world would struggle to bring themselves up to our level. I don't see that happening now. I see the bottom dragging down the top. Much like you see in our society at large, all around you. Every day.

More bullshit piled higher and deeper. The one thing that rings true is that Ukrainians wouldn't trust a guy like Hoeft with a weapon and ammunition.

Word is seeping out from these 'soldiers of fortune' that it just ain't all it was cracked up to be...it is so so so so so much worse.

Redditor legionnaires are getting way less than they bargained for, with all the attendant death plus some.

Darwin was right.

MikeR म्हणाले...

This has been well-covered, just not in the American and Western press. Ukraine has a clear motive to get Americans killed, so they can publicize it and move the US in the direction of more intervention and more supplies. They are sending the American guys without weapons.

Rollo म्हणाले...

Boogaloo is a catch-all term for a variety of different groups and individuals. Like Antifa, maybe, but even less unified, it's a tendency, not a single organization or a common ideology.

I think “patriots” are the kind of men “compelled” to help the “right” side.
I don’t know if it’s dna, if it’s what they see growing up or in their mothers’ milk.

Truthfully- they need to be cherished, somehow, at home. In the USA. They get to the Ukraine and want to fight for them, but for us, too.

It doesn’t work that way.
It just doesn’t work.

When so many Americans not only don’t cherish their own(warriors, workers&xx women?) When there is no national America 1st in America?
We cannot export patriotism.

Especially when it’s called nazism.
Waste of American treasure…

&ps to John henry- it seems the “f-word” is a feature- not a bug.

Does he call himself a Boogaloo Boy? Because I'm about 100% sure they don't exist in any meaningful fashion. They're a boogeyman invented by the liberal media to scare millennials into giving more money to BLM and Antifa.

I couldn't listen to more than about 30 seconds of his rant. Thanks to those here who did and gave the rest of us some idea of what we missed. Still, he has something virtually none of his detractors have--the courage of his convictions.

So much of this whole thing reminds me of the Spanish Civil War in the '30's - foreign powers send in weapons to see how they perform, foreign volunteer brigades show up and are surprised that they (a) are expected to be subject to the command structure of the military; (b) are not allowed to leave; and (c) are viewed as more expendable than the actual citizenry of the subject country.

tommyesq म्हणाले...

Hoeft packed up some of the combat gear he used sporadically in recent years as a member of the boogaloo boys

Putting aside the issue of whether there is such a thing as the "Boogaloo Boys" and whether Hoeft was ever a member, could someone point to me where this "organization" engaged in "combat?"

As an American infantryman he is used to more than adequate resupply and complete air superiority. Not to mention the complete absence of artillery or armor among the opfor. We are so not ready to fight a war against anyone who is even remotely within are league. Hell, we ended up losing to the Taliban.

John henry म्हणाले...

So he only got 10 bullets.

He should have been in ww2 Russian army. Only some soldiers got weapons and ammo. The rest marched into battle unarmed and were expected to pick up weapons as their comrades got mowed down.

If hoeft had been ex navy instead of army, he would have used cumshaw to augment his weaponry. He would have wound up very well armed

Let me make sure I understand; he, and a few others that come from countries that have also signed onto the Geneva Convention, hid in the back of Ambulance so they could cross lines while retaining their [military style] "kit", particularly armament. Is that the story?

Rusty म्हणाले...

Tommyesq.
The whole thing is suspect. I think there are a whole lot of special operator wannabes showing up. So yeah. Give them an old AK and 10 rounds of ammo send out and see what direction the fire is coming from. Hey, kid. You volunteered for this.

Joe Smith म्हणाले...

'Here's Hoeft's beef'

I prefer them grilled with just mustard, but they are equally delicious on a bun with onions and sauerkraut.

Ron Winkleheimer म्हणाले...

@Leland

Sneaking around in ambulances while armed is bad enough, but if the Russians capture any of these foreign volunteers chances are near certain that they'll classify them as mercenaries, which makes them unlawful combatants. So, a quick kangaroo court and then a bullet to the back of the head.

robother म्हणाले...

An American killed while shooting at Russians in a firefight doesn't provide much leverage to get American politicians pumped up enough to declare war. On the other hand, an innocent (i.e., unarmed) American? He's lucky to get out, they just wanted him for his corpse.

There was some guy down in CA who shot some cops a few years ago. I think he was Navy, or maybe Marines. I don't know if he wore a Hawaiian shirt, though.

Then there was the assault on poor Althea Bernstein, right there in Madison. Fortunately, she survived. Heard any more about that? Did they ever catch those guys? Althouse must be worried sick. Right-wing NAZI fascists, right there in her town.

rcocean म्हणाले...

Boogaloo Boys?

I *thought* I saw some frat guys in Sunglasses and Hawaian Shirts on TV - next to a Russian tank.

Guess, they're done with throwing lighter fluid on random brown people in Madison and are now in the Donbass.

But when you're FBI, you can do that.

Josephbleau म्हणाले...

The worst thing about Boogaloos is that I have a great collection of Hawaiian shirts that I no longer dare to wear. They were expensive, I got several at the Royal Hawaiian shops.

The old myth of unarmed Soviet soldiers as the rule rather than the rare exception just won't die. Instances like that did happen early in the war and in emergency situations, but by late 1943 the average Ivan was at least as well outfitted as the average Fritz.

Some of that new stuff was the result of getting the evacuated factories back online, but much was due to Lend Lease, which allowed the USSR to concentrate on making masses of what they were good at already.

The Red Army became a logistics giant due in large part to the 100s of k of US vehicles supplied, as well as the often overlooked 1200 (iirc) heavy duty diesel locomotives u.s.w.
