"... that has become an unsettlingly common feature of the pandemic in New York City: a seemingly unprovoked attack in which the person charged is a homeless man. In many neighborhoods in Manhattan, residents have expressed growing concern about homeless people, some of whom seem to be struggling with mental illness, menacing and harassing passers-by.... Mr. Nash had a string of arrests dating to 2015 in New York and New Jersey on charges including assault, burglary and drug possession. He proclaimed his innocence as detectives led him in handcuffs out of the Fifth Precinct station house.... 'I didn’t kill anyone,' he said. 'I don’t know what’s going on.'... From "Screams That ‘Went Quiet’: Prosecutors’ Account of Chinatown Killing/Christina Yuna Lee, who was described as 'irreplaceable,' was stabbed to death in her apartment after a man followed her into her building" (NYT).

Police heard the woman crying out as they struggled to break through the locked door, and Nash was found inside the apartment, hiding under a bed.

That's probably right if you define helped as helped to get back on their feet to live their lives. The others can be helped too, if you define helped as made less miserable and less dangerous.

Predominantly not just "homeless men" but "Black homeless men," as the Times would style it. That part would not be mentioned in a Times article, of course.

The growing problem of deranged and menacing homeless people with arrest records can be solved very easily.

Just don't arrest them. And if you accidentally do arrest them, don't charge them.

Isn't that the new policy in NYC?

wendybar said...

Blacks are attacking Asians all the time now. You can't blame that on Trump. The left just doesn't want to talk about it, or they want to investigate the "root causes". The "root causes" is that they let these criminals out of prison and keep slapping their hands when they commit crimes. This is all because of Progressive policies.

I believe an independent google image search for the perpetrator, Assamed Nash, shows him to be a dark skinned man. In reading the NYTimes article, there is no mention of him being Black...with the special capitalization of the letter"B". I'll bet if he was the victim of the crime, his race would be highlighted in the first paragraph.

Why do the newspapers tiptoe around the fact that the attackers arrested for these hate crimes on Asians are overwhelmingly Black, whether homeless or not? Bonus question: if these assaults are by "homeless people," why do so few of the arrestees seem to be homeless non-Black people? Is it perhaps the same reason the media describes smash-and-grab looters as being "youts" when every security camera video shows the overwhelming majority of them to be Blacks?

Very sad, and scary as a parent to a teen girl. Lower Manhattan around the Bowery and down to Canal has a relatively high concentration of shelters and outpatient drug rehabs, many in and around the edges of Chinatown. She was targeted I’m guessing because she’s a woman, a smallish one. For much of covid the office workers and those manning the economy disappeared, but the street folks never went away. I don’t know if it was just a relative thing, but going around midtown especially felt like the 80s, especially because cops weren’t clearing streets or even discouraging junkies from using the streets as a shooting gallery. But this downtown area has always had a shadier element owing to the shelters and rehabs.

A similar perp murdered a 70 yr old nurse who was waiting at a bus stop in downtown LA last month. She'd been a nurse at County General for 38 years.

The homeless want to be left alone, but left to themselves act out, from boredom or meth psychosis or what, sheer antisocial resentment?

The "mental illness" excuse is a copout.

A bigger problem is the lack of Asian homeless. A mystery that has baffled socialists for years since solid family structure and a culture that stresses edication should not make a difference. The lack of Asian homeless and the incredibly low rates of Asian illegitimacy are really one of the key causes of inequality. No wonder people attack them. The way to solve this is by taking Asian children away from birth and giving them to single non-Asian mothers on welfare.

Sometimes that is true. Many times it is not. The mental illness in question is often speed psychosis, but that doesn't make it any less real. Most people really do not understand the damage that methamphetamine use has caused in this country. It turns many people into dangerous deluded shells of their former selves. Many don't ever come back. Fentanyl gets the headlines because of overdose deaths, but I'd say meth is doing more damage.

We'll take half of the Asian children, and place them with Single Non-Asian Moms on Welfare

I'm paywall blocked from reading the article, so I'm taking the word of the other commenters here saying there's no mention of the perpetrator being black. There was a recently published study on the race of perpetrators of anti-Asian violence.

Their finding was that 97% of the attacks were permitted by white people.. Their methodology was to look up articles on anti-Asian violence and identify the stated race of the perpetrator. So, this article would not have gone in the "black perpetrator" column. I wonder if that happens a lot.

What strikes me is the victim's complete lack of street smarts or intuition of danger. She apparently had no awareness at all that someone had followed her into the building, or that he was tagging along behind her up the stairs. Even if he was not right behind her, I can't understand how she could have been so oblivious to his presence. Whenever I was out walking the sidewalk to my building late at night, I was always scanning to see if anyone else was within visible distance, and I would certainly be alert to someone entering the building after me. From the description that the intruder entered her apartment "before the door closed," I infer (possibly incorrectly) that she let the door close on its own, rather than actively pushing it shut, something I would always do. And I was in a reasonably safe neighborhood, in a building on Riverside Drive on the Upper West Side, (though there had been periods in my years there, especially the first decade and a half, when the neighborhood and the block could be dicey after dark).

I’m with Cookie on this. I too was struck by her apparent lack of situational awareness. Plus she was very nicely dressed in heels and a cute skirt. This isn’t meant to blame the victim at all, but surely she should have known to be extra aware of her surroundings. It’s possible that she knew something was up but didn’t want to do anything that would provoke a confrontation such as take precautions because a black guy might have been following her. Everyone knows that it’s a racist act to cross the street when you see a black guy coming in your direction or following behind you on a sidewalk. Jesse Jackson once famously addressed the point in a moment of lucidity.

My local FB Group in an VERY Asian Suburb of LA has been VERY Quiet about Asian Violence, since an initial outburst. I guess the articles with images of the attackers had an impact...

I wonder if this is related? Could it be they don't want to show the race of the usual perpetrator?
UCLA won’t explain how it used taxpayer dollars meant for research into anti-Asian discrimination

In other related news, 39.8% of Homeless are Black per this site:
The State of Homelessness in the US – 2021

And supposedly per the same site, there are 552,000 homeless in the US per the WH.

And somehow LA County has 80,000 of them.
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/la-sheriff-and-politicians-spar-over-homeless-debacle/ar-AAN0HiQ

The LA County Sheriff is saying that is about 1/3rd of all Homeless in the US. But using the WH numbers it's around 15%, or 1/6. LA County is around 10 Million, which is around

Which works out to about 1/33, or 3%. So LA County is a bit over represented for Homeless.

Dealing with the crazies on the street has gotten all tangled up with racial politics, certainly in NYC and probably in most other big cities. The dangerous crazies are a subset, how small is impossible to say, and which ones are dangerous is just as impossible to figure out until they act out. In today's NYC, the cops mostly just ignore the crazies, whereas since Giuliani-time in years past they were more pro-active (no sleeping on the sidewalk or the subways, no squeegee-man stuff, etc.).

You can already feel the pendulum swinging back -- the politicos here are all Dems, but not all prog/crazy Dems. The Dem team was wiped out in the last elections in Nassau Co, mostly because of the bail reform (meaning generally no bail required) laws that had been passed by the Dem legislature (there are too few Reps in the state legislature to matter). Bail reform was all about too many black/Hispanic young men being locked up pre-trial for street crimes -- a policy that didn't sell well in the suburbs, for sure, where voters were less focused on perps and more on victims of street crime. And the prog/crazy candidates did poorly in other parts of the state as well (including NYC, since Adams was the least proggy candidate among the Dems running for mayor).

All too late for this victim, and she won't be the last. But the public's tolerance for letting the crazies roam freely has gotten quite limited, even in NYC and perhaps elsewhere -- here's looking at you, LA and Chi.
