"President Putin has ordered Russia’s nuclear deterrent forces to be on high alert as he condemned NATO’s 'aggressive statements' regarding his invasion of Ukraine...."

"The significant escalation of tensions came as Germany, Britain and other NATO countries said they were sending military aid to Ukraine and imposed hard-hitting financial sanctions against Russia, including the president himself. 'Western countries are taking not only unfriendly actions against our country in the economic sphere, I mean here illegitimate sanctions that everyone knows about. But the top officials of leading NATO countries are also allowing aggressive statements against our country,' he said, in a statement reported by the Russian news agency, Tass. 'Therefore, I order the minister of defence and the chief of the general staff to transfer the deterrent forces of the Russian army to a special mode of combat duty.' According to Russia’s nuclear doctrine, which was updated in 2020, it can carry out first-strike attacks if it has 'reliable information' about the launch of ballistic missiles targeting its territory.... Speaking on Wednesday night, before the first dawn assaults by Russian airborne troops, tanks and cruise missiles, he warned that 'whoever tries to hinder us' would see consequences 'you have never seen in your history.'"

Good thing Biden is in Delaware where he is safe and there is plenty of ice cream.

Just as I predicted - the strongly worded letter from Biden has rattled Putin.

One more letter like that and Putin will either fold or initiate a nuclear war.

Putin will use a Nuke and blame Ukraine.

Hillary will crawl in bed with the Russians, and concoct a story that it's really Trump.

See the pattern?

This isn't the USSR. This isn't Soviet hardliners seeking to dominate the world through the spread of communist ideology.

The west does not know how far Putin will go, but The Kremlin knows how far they will allow Putin to go.

Only one side in this conflict understands the Principle of War called "Initiative" and it isn't us.

Biden's clown show has been caught flat-footed at every step in this conflict, again and again.

He's getting schooled, and Dems are too stupid to see it. Point it out and these accuse you of being pro-Putin. No, shit-for-brains. We're pro-victory, and pro-deterrence.

This will ease tensions...There are some downsides to thermonuclear wars, but look at the big picture. There will be far less carbon emissions after such an event and Greta Thunberg's troubled soul will find peace.

I'm so old, I remember when the Cold War was over and there was no chance the Russians would ever nuke anybody.

"...officials of leading NATO countries are also allowing aggressive statements against our country."

So Putin threatens nuclear war because they are saying mean things about him.

People keep using this word "deterrent," but this is not what it means.

This is at best provocation, certainly aggressive, and not to be dismissed as a precursor to actual use.

Not looking good for Putin.

Neither he nor President PoopyPants expected Ukraine to put up a fight like this.

Zelensky is going to have some nice things to say and a surprising amount of credibility coming out of this.

Hard to imagine the Russians stranding vehicles do to running out of gas. There are going to be a lot of Generals in the Russian army leaving service one way or another after this.

Here's hoping Putin is left with a 50 mile DMZ starting at his former border and going towards Moscow after the end of this conflict. But I doubt it.

Biden staying in DC this weekend may not have been necessary as far as decision-making goes, but it sure looks crappy. And he should have been more specific with Putin about what they meant by "minor incursion.'

Has Zelensky been smeared by the leftist media like Viktor Orban of Hungary and President Trump? There was so much talk of him being a tyrant that arrested his opposition and shut down the press. Now, having seen the man's patriotism and fighting spirit, I wonder if any of it is true or if it's just more Leftist propaganda.

The NATO countries won’t stop buying it from Putin on their own.

Seriously have to wonder if the russian military would follow his orders to launch nukes, just because someone has said some mean things to Putin.

There was an episode in the cold war (my war. Hey, you think that wasn't tough?) when the Soviets did give the order to launch when they thought they detected a single missile heading their way from the west. Those in the final stages of the launch cycle refused to cary out the order, reasoning that if a nuclear attack was acutally underway there would be hundreds of missiles coming in, not just one. They prevented a nuclear exchange.

Hopefully that same mentality survives in the Russian missile force today. Their mission is deterrence--if they ever launch then they have failed in their mission.

DrSquid mentions an incident during the Cold War, when I was a buttress of the US military by supporting it from the outside.

During the Cuban Missile Crisis, IIRC, a Soviet submarine officer refused to sign off on a nuclear torpedo launch that his captain wanted to initiate.

Use of nukes--even 'tactical' nukes--or chem will be a threshold very few Russian officers relish crossing, and we have no reason to think that these Russians don't love their children as much as the Commies did.

Putin is no Bonaparte, he's a second-rate Fouche. Totally different skillsets.

Ha, another peace keeping mission. Hopefully, it will be more successful than Clinton's invasions and separatist policy, Obama's forays into coups, Springs and world war, Biden's sellout for personal change, and the UN's infamous democratic Choice of shared responsibility, twilight and avoidance, and progressive corruption.

Note to post-coup Kiev: 32 trimesters, no reconciliation, no remediation, democracy dies in darkness, it's over. Don't bight the hand that keeps the peace. There may still be a chance to avoid the Libyan affair, the Syrian gambit, the Afghan progression, and the Kosovo solution.

Yesterday, someone doubted my comment about the Kaiser not knowing his army's only plans were to attack France in the event of Russian mobilization.
Here's a second historian I found today saying essentially that in the Q&A after an undergrad/HS lecture:

Margaret McMillan

I see Inga is back and as dumb as ever. You are still buying the Trump-Putin story in spite of everything ?

Narr said...

McMillan is great, I've read several of her books. The issue is still a bit obscure--the difference between Wilhelm knowing that the plan to attack in the West existed, and not knowing what else was or wasn't planned.

I'll see what I can find, but accept that I may be entirely mistaken.

Notice that that guy in North Korea stopped lobbing missiles over Japan when Trump was POTUS, was this a bad thing? Putin didn't go on any rampages when Trump was president, was that a bad thing?

Ralph L said...

Narr, I may not have stated it correctly yesterday. Dr. Michael Neiberg, who has a bunch of entertaining lectures (several at the WWI museum in Kansas) online, said the Kaiser told von Moltke the Younger, "Your uncle would not have given me that answer." I assume someone wrote that down at the time. It's possible the General Staff was forcing the Kaiser's hand to attack France.
