At the Sunrise Café...

... you can talk all night.

It was a dreary day — not cold, but dreary — and I took a second walk. Here's how things looked in late morning:

re: claims by the government and MSM of Nazi flags amongst the Canadian truckers

"He said, “Yes there was some clown with a Nazi flag on the weekend, and we don’t know where he’s from, but I’ll tell you what, if we see anyone with a Nazi flag or a Confederate flag, we’ll kick his fucking teeth in. No one’s a Nazi here.” Manitoba Corner all gave a shout out to that."

I've been wondering why the left hasn't supplied photo "evidence" that the truckers are racists, Nazis, and all the other things Trudeau slandered them with. I now understand.

The short article by a resident of downtown Ottawa is a worthwhile read.

Please to explain:

The Houston Rockets acquired Enes Kanter Freedom in a trade with the Celtics. Then literally minutes later, they cut him from the team.

What reason would there be for any team to legitimately trade for someone only to then release him?

That Connecticut middle school assignment where 13 and 14 year students were told to use pizza toppings to suggest sex acts? What did sausage stand for? How about pepperoni? If you put no toppings, just cheese, did that mean the student was celibate?

Meanwhile, Wikipedia has been trying to tell people that the Turkish Enes Kanter Freedom is of Swiss heritage.

Watching live festive footage from the truckers occupation in Canada via YouTube. There’s dancing. I’m seeing people of color.

Matt Taibbi has an interesting take on the Trudeau reaction.

No, just that he was born in Switzerland:

"...Enes Kanter Freedom was born on May 20, 1992 in Zürich, Switzerland as Enes Kanter.[5] Kanter's parents are Turkish.[6] His father, Mehmet Kanter, received his M.D. from the University of Zurich. The family then returned to Turkey,[7] where Kanter grew up."

I just saw someone in a Barney outfit wiggling down an Otta-side walk.
A bit later, I saw a Dad with a big maple leaf flag pushing his kid in a stroller..probably looking for Barney.
It's too much.
This must be stopped!

It's official, the fun little diversion called W***** has now been transferred to the New York Times website.

And so I end my career undefeated 28-0.

Before trying to correct me, you should really know what the hell you are talking about.

Read what I actually said, StephenFearby. I said that Wikipedia was trying to sell people on the idea that Enes Kanter Freedom was Swiss. What you posted is what the site says NOW. What Wikipedia opened the entry with earlier this evening was that "Enes Kanter Freedom is a Swiss-born American..." They are trying to downplay his Turkish roots and give the impression he instead is of Swiss origin, when his only connection there is that his Turkish parents happened to be there when he was born.

NYT Feb. 11, 2022 Updated 9:41 p.m. ET

"The United States warned on Friday that President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia could mount a major military assault on Ukraine at any moment, suggesting a crisis that had been building for months has reached a critical phase."

"...U.S. officials have picked up intelligence that Russia is considering Wednesday as the possible date for the start of military action, according to multiple officials briefed on the material."

N World Jan 12, 2022

"...Although Nato says Russia is ready for combat, US intelligence officials reportedly believe that Moscow’s room for manoeuvre is limited by relatively mild temperatures, meaning the ground in much of Ukraine is muddy rather than frozen.

Officials told The New York Times that the soft, wet conditions might push back any Russian offensive until at least February, to prevent troops, tanks and heavy equipment becoming stuck in a quagmire."

"...Any frozen ground would start thawing again in the spring, creating further muddy hazards for invading troops."

https://www.thenationalnews.com/world/europe/2022/01/12/could-russian-attack-on-ukraine-be-delayed-by-mild-weather/

But Weather.com's current 10 Day Weather Forcast for Kyiv Ukraine suggests a thaw is in the works starting next week. Wednesday seems particularly thawful, as it marks the start of a run of no overnight freezing:

Sun 13
39°/26°

Mon 14
42°/26°

Tue 15
43°/27°

Wed 16
45°/35°

Thu 17

Light Rain

Fri 18

Sat 19

Sun 20

Mon 21
45°/38°

Tue 22
44°/36°

Wed 23
43°/35°

Thu 24
42°/35°

Remember, the NYT reports that: U.S. officials have picked up intelligence that Russia is [now] considering Wednesday as the possible date for the start of military action."

Which seems consistent with the weather forecast, although Putin could always change his mind.

Houston was trying to drop salary, or make room under the salary cap. Whoever they traded with wanted to get rid of Freedom without cutting him for some reason, probably contractual.

With a good bit of searching I was able to find an article that did include a picture of the Nazi flag. The article went to great lengths to avoid saying so, but it was clear from the discussion that the flags were not there in support of Nazis, but instead were being used to compare the government to Nazis.

Really, really (to quote Adele) bad optics, and offensive in that the comparison grossly understates the badness of the Nazis (in the same way that calling Republicans Nazis or Hitler is offensive)

But no support for Nazis from the protesters

Our foundation pour will occur Monday afternoon. We'll be using concrete from Snohomish County since the major concrete producers (6 of them) and the Teamsters can't get their act together here in King County. The drive from Snohomish County to our house site is at least 45-minutes. The Concrete workers (Teamsters) have been on strike here in King County for over two months. It's been about two months since the foundation forms were put in place and the there's no end in sight for this strike. It's costing us about 12% more to get the concrete from Snohomish county, but it'll be worth it go get the house construction going again.

That is exactly my impression. The one picture I saw seemed to state that Trudeau was a Nazi.

Houston had room under the cap. They took on Freedom's contract and got compensated for it with either players or draft picks. Then they bought out Freedom's contract and cut him.

Strictly a salary cap thing. I don't know all of the details of this particular deal but this is how these things typically work.

Expect Freedom to get picked up by another team within a week under a new, probably more team friendly contract.

Actually I wouldn't mind seeing Freedom get picked up by my Sixers since they need a backup Big after trading Drummond to the Nets

Did I miss anything? Part 2. The Second One.

At 330pm yesterday our power went out again. We got it back at 930 this morning. Our usual 40-something customers over a several block area. The timing was superb--just as a warm afternoon was turning cold and dinnertime approached . . . Today is cloudy and raw, without even solar insolation on our southern exposure.

Some new neighbors are amazed. They moved here from Florida last fall, and this is a very bad introduction to winter in Memphis.

As a matter of fact, I actually do know what I was writing about, as well as (in this case) Wikipedia.

Both the earlier and later versions of Wikipedia's article describing Enes Kanter Freedom's origins are correct. Enes is now a recent Swiss-born American citizen AND
"...Kanter's parents are Turkish...The family then returned to Turkey,[7] where Kanter grew up."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enes_Kanter_Freedom

There is nothing in the later version that Enes was ever a Swiss Citizen, nor (almost certainly) in the earlier version as well.

That is because:

Ten things you need to know about Swiss citizenship

"Being born in Switzerland or having parents who live or have lived in the country does not confer any right to citizenship. As a rule, a foreigner can become Swiss only if he or she lives in Switzerland, has Swiss ancestors, or is married to a Swiss citizen."

https://tinyurl.com/bdh4fw4t

So, my polite correction (with a supporting link) of your erroneous assertion unfortunately seems to have struck a nerve.

I do hope this correction doesn't cause you to go on a bender.
