"She wanted that hairstyle. She was so curious about why so many women have that hairstyle, especially on the Republican side of the ticket."

The "she" is Meryl Streep and the quote is from the hair person for the movie "Don't Look Up," in "Micro Bangs, Mullets, and a Republican Bob: Every Out-of-This World Hairstyle in Don't Look Up" (Pop Sugar). Streep plays the role of President of the United States.

We're told that Streep kept saying, "Don't try to make it look pretty. I like it when it has this flat weird thing!'"

I share her curiosity about why so many women have that hairstyle. It's so incredibly stupid...

It's hilarious to have a President with that hair. Can everyone please stop? It's like Shirley Temple grew up and couldn't figure out she wasn't a child anymore. That is, it's like Bette Davis in "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?"

Yes. If there are "so many," naming a few would be nice. I've not noticed any "incredibly stupid" hairstyles either.

Be careful. Merely whispering those names has had the effect of making liberals/lefties given standing ovations and calling one of those men "sort of a god".

And the standing ovation for Polanski, on more than 1 occasion, was given long after his conviction for drugging and sodomizing and raping an underage girl.

If you put up a picture of just the hair women had could people really identify the person?

I can't find any politicians that have hair like Streep's either.

Nothing here makes sense.

Skeptical Voter said...

I don't know. Like many in Hollywood Streep no doubt has a rich fantasy life. She may think that's what Republican women look like. OTOH the look she achieves is something like the wig of an English judge--after he or she pilled a pint or two of beer on it. Had to do something to get that golden tone.

OTOH one can rest assured that all I'll ever see of the movie or television show where Merle lays a female Republican is that little blip at the top of our host's post.

I've only watched the first 20 minutes of the movie. I intend to keep working on it. I don't know why a comedy is more than 2 hours. That feels like an ordeal. But there was some funny stuff — snacks at the White House, the President not focusing on the extinction event about to happen in 6 months, the upcoming mid-terms seemingly more important....

Yes, that is the idea. Making fun of the women who wear their hair like that. I agree with her. It's incredibly stupid looking, and hilarious for a President to have hair like that. The film is a comedy. Streep is not trying to look good but to look funny.

Do hairstyles reflect political affiliation?

A few years ago I convinced my wife to cut her hair shorter. Bad idea. She said she looked like an Iowa Republican or a dyke. She is a Democrat, so the former was a bigger problem than the latter.

I run across a lot of 55+ women with purple, green or scarlet hair. I suppose they are liberals or just trying to emulate their grandchildren. It's rarely flattering in my opinion. I shudder when I run across my liberal Democrat neighbor who bobbed her long black hair, dyed it blonde and is now letting it grow out. She looks like a long term, psych resident let out for the weekend.

But I thought we saw a closeup of a photo — displayed in the Oval Office — of her with Bill Clinton. So I took her to be a Democrat.

The main difference I see there is that those women all did stuff to thicken the hair at the crown of the head and Streep didn't. This makes their hair/head shapes remain more oval and Streep's head becomes more circular.

All of the research points towards female attractiveness correlating with a more oval shape face.

Personally I am hoping for more variety in hair styles in general. Our taste in style has become moribund and stale.

I think it's kind of weird for a woman to have long hair once she's reached a certain age, but if Dr. Jill can dress like she shops at Forever 21, then the Republican women can wear long hair. It wouldn't be my choice, but if they're happy with how they look, what else should matter?

Now let's talk about men's hair and how they're all doing it wrong.

I disagree. It's much worse.

DWS's hair is naturally curly, and she's got a style that lets the curls be curls. If you have curly hair, you have various choices, and the ones that don't involve straightening are better. Love what you have.

The stupid hairdo MS is wearing is done to straight hair, deliberately adding the curls with a curling iron (or some other curling device, such as a long sock or rag).

I don't see a problem with cascading curls. I think it's reasonable to curl one's hair. Even naturally curly hair has to be re-curled, to make it more refined.

I went and searched Sinema hoping for something different.

I just don't see many pictures of politicians. She and Psaki have essentially the same hair style. Straight shoulder length off center part framed out over the ears.

Kinda boring.

Trying to decide what her natural hair color is. If she dyes it it is very consistent. My hair did the same thing when it was blond getting lighter and darker during the year.

I should go do some work.

I don’t have an opinion on the hair style one way or the other. Except the current trend of fox personalities that have long hair and always keep a hank forward over their shoulders. It seems unnatural/contrived to never brush your hair back over your shoulder.

I have what I consider to be unattractive hair. I had those barrel curls naturally as a child. If they were left unbrushed too long they would turn into (what my mom called) rat tails and result in a painful brushing out session. Hormones during puberty left me with very curly hair (Debbie Wasserman Schultz). Further hormone changes after pregnancy has left me with odd angled waves - very similar to marcel waves. It’s possible I’d have those barrel curls again if I let my hair get below chin length.

I do find it annoying when people go on about woman with short hair. It takes work to straighten curly hair and any moisture or humidity throws that work right out the window. With increasing arthritis in my hands it’s also a painful process.

For the first time in my life I am growing out my bangs. No particular reason why other than why not.

Back to the sixties. The politicization of haircuts. I had long hair for awhile to reflect my gentle, peace loving nature. It was kind of a drag. It takes forever for your hair to dry. I was just as glad to go back to short hair.....I never really thought of women's hair-do's as being reflective of their politics. In any event, good looks trump both politics and hair-do's....In Roman Holiday, Audrey Hepburn goes for a haircut. She has beautiful long hair, and the barber recommends that she keep it, but she insists. After the haircut, she becomes a beautiful woman with a gamin cut instead of a beautiful woman with long hair.

I agree about that range of styles. For the age and supposed professionalism of the women sporting this look it's too long for business, too arranged, too many fake curls, etc. They look like a bunch of 50 year olds trying to look like prom night. Im all for long hair but tie it back, roll it up whatever when you're trying to be a big shot. Gretchen Whitmer looks the worst to me. The harsh lipstick adds to the horror.

If I were in politics I would hire a staffer to make sure that I confounded every generalization people make about the relationship between fashion/livestyle and ideology. That would keep the idiots who write for the style pages busy.

Yesterday, I didn't know "barrel curls" were a thing. Now I am an expert. I sort of remember Jessica Tarlov wearing them. A web search also brings up Julia Roberts, Catherine Zeta Jones, Debra Messing, and Kyra Sedgwick coiffed similarly.

I guess the idea is to evoke the style without slavishly following it. Streep's character (or her stylist) takes it too literally, so it is supposed to be silly or stupid or vulgar or something.

Speaking of "something very weird happened," Trump got elected, so that proves that Americans will elect a person despite (or because of) conspicuously bad hair.

Is this a discussion on the hair style itself? It’s an interesting hair style: women tend to have the ability to experiment with their hair more than men, even as political figures. Sometimes with great success and sometimes not. It’s a fashion thing, I suppose.

Is this a discussion on the appearance of politicians? All I can say is, I ain’t voting for them because their hair is terrible! (That’s sarcasm).

Of course, this is a fictional President, so I guess all bets are off on both counts.

Someone else noted the real bad trend that accompanies this on-air hair, the weird one side in front of the shoulder and one side swept back look. No lady IRL goes through their day looking like they styled their hair by twirling with a sudden stop. Where did this strange look come from and why do so many chicks on TV wear it so! Is it a rule that only left shoulders should be exposed? After mocking this look for years I’m suddenly interested in the origin story.

I thought the movie was clever in places and effective mostly as a commentary on what social media, and Big Media, are doing to our world. I tried to make sense of the political angles and didn't see any consistent pro- or anti- Dem or Republican propaganda. Like most movies, it had a lot of internal inconsistency. It seemed like the main message was--they are all really, really sleazy.

Why would the two scientists who figured out that the comet was coming be surprised and amazed when they look up in the sky and see it coming? Didn't they know that already? If Meryl Streep was Donald Trump, why didn't he get Bruce Willis up there to blow the comet up? Why wasn't Bruce Willis in this?

Brian said...

Why wasn't Bruce Willis in this?

There was a Bruce WIllis character sent to blow it up. He turned around because of spoilers....

the Peter Thiel(? or Tim Cook? or Steve Jobs?) guy that pointed out all the money in the comet.

It's a funny movie, and I knew with the cast it had, that it had to be a anti-republican movie, but what I saw was an anti-elite movie. The elite scientists don't really know much, and are easily misled by the trappings of power, and suffer from panic attacks. The elite in the government are motivated by their own personal power and not the greater good. The elite in the media are motivated by their own base desires of sexual avarice and wanting to be liked. The elite in the military are scamming people they don't need to (the snacks joke was the best). The elite in popular culture are clueless. The elite in the tech industry are just evil. And all of them use each other to achieve their own personal goals. The poor public is just clueless. It's how Hollywood sees people from Kansas (or Wisconsin). Rubes.

It was only after watching reviews that I learned this was supposed to be about climate change. With the Fauci level adoration shown to Di Caprio's character I thought it was about Covid and was surprised it got made.

It certainly isn't going to make anybody vote for the New Green Deal. Still funny though.

Curly hair tends to be dry and frizzy. If you don’t use some sort of gel to keep the clumps of curls together you end up with either something similar to an Afro (if you have thick hair) or something resembling a dandelion (if you have fine hair). I was a dandelion. DWS should probably use a lighter gel or maybe scrunch to break the gel curl casings.
