"I have a lot more in common with liberals in terms of creativity, music and all that stuff — Republicans are always seen as staid and stodgy."

Said Greg Gutfeld — who likes punk rock and metal — quoted in "Greg Gutfeld has risen to the top at Fox News — and that’s no joke" (WaPo).

Also from the article (and this has nothing to do with Gutfeld's purported commonality with liberals):
The rare panelist inclined to regularly push back against Gutfeld is Tyrus, a 6-foot-8-inch, 365-pound Republican actor and professional wrestler, who towers over the 5-foot-4-inch host. “He’s never asked me to share his vision,” Tyrus says in an interview. Tyrus, who is African American, is a central figure in the show’s relentless lampooning of woke culture. He appears in regular skits as “The Angry Black Male” to mock activists who he and Gutfeld believe overuse and misuse assertions of racial inequities.
On the program, “racist” has become a punchline. On a recent show, Gutfeld held up a copy of “Fox & Friends” co-host Brian Kilmeade’s book, “The President and the Freedom Fighter: Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, and Their Battle to Save America’s Soul.” The cover features an image of Lincoln in the top left corner and Douglass in the bottom right. “Look at this book. White man on the top, Black man on the bottom — racist!” Gutfeld said to the strait-laced Kilmeade. “You are a racist.”...

In Gutfeld’s world, there are countless racists among those who talk about systemic racism. He’s labeled as “racist” Hakeem Jefferson, a Stanford University professor, who is African American, for tweeting: “Make no mistake, this crazy opposition to mask-wearing that is leading folks (read white ppl) to act violently at school board meetings & council meetings & everywhere else—yeah, you can’t disconnect it from whiteness.”

I once sat at a table next to Gutfeld in a café in Manhattan. He was alone and reading his own short column in some magazine; I guess that is a sign of focus, or maybe narcism, or pride, IDK. But "are always seen" has a lot more to do with the propaganda with which the liberals flood our culture than any reality I know.

"Democrats are all the good things about people and Republicans are all the bad things" is a line that sociopaths have been using to keep the rubes in line while they ransack the treasury for decades.

I am assured that the new book "That's Not Funny: How the Right Wing Makes Comedy Work for Them" is not actually a parody, like it sounds.

BTW, there is a huge gap between liberals and "the right wing" in politics, a hypothetical 'center right' area occupied by no actual person. This is just as true as the assertion that Republicans are not into art and all of that jazz, and justly accepted without blinking by all journalists.

I first came across Gutfeld when he had a column at Huffington Post. He was really the only funny thing on HuffPo, and was adept at gutting whatever standard leftist shibboleth was current at the moment. I quit going to HuffPo because my comments, which were always against the gush of liberalism there, were never posted. I tested this by writing comments that were ludicrously liberal in their drift, and those were posted without any problem. I figured it was only a matter of time for Gutfeld to quit or get booted, and that was what happened. I was gratified when he showed up on Fox, first on Red Eye, and then on whatever he's done since. He's actually funny, where Fallon and others are just sheep.

Just what we need, the WAPO's take on Gutfeld. He is a co-host on "The Five," and that group is not staid. And Tyrus does not usually play the role of the angry black guy. He is usually mellow, soft-spoken and very thoughtful. However, I have never seen any of the skits. Gutfeld is very knowledgeable, very witty, and extremely well-informed. He successfully satirizes and skewers extreme leftists. He is the current king of late night comedy, and the left is very envious of his success. I'm surprised the WAPO took so long to recognize his success. Gutfeld, incidentally, was an English major who graduated from Berkeley, a good background for a comic.

It's not rare for a panelist to "push back" against Gutfeld, and most of Tyrus' pushbacks are not ideological, but criticisms of Gutfeld's weird obsessions & personal tics.

A large part of Gutfeld's persona involves not only deprecation of his guests, but also a lot of self-deprecation, including his pretense to megalomania.

Look at "neutral" articles, on (say) regions of the world, or mathematics, or composers, and it's more or less as good as any alternative -- better, often, because it gets frequent updates, and the print encyclopedias do not. I find it very useful, as a writer, in checking the odd fact.

Jaq said...

From the same article in Wikipedia on "leathernecks"

Contrary to popular opinion, it was used not to protect the neck during swordfights but merely to keep the head and the neck erect when the uniform was worn.

Then there is this further down:

The stock collar was worn originally to protect the neck from sword cuts,[10] such as cutlass slashes while boarding ships,[11] and to maintain an erect posture. The leather stock was adopted three years prior to the Barbary War in which United States Marines first fought North African Islamic pirates armed with scimitars. This is disputed as leather is not considered adequate protection against a striking object.[citation needed]

That's a. really weak objection, and has no citation, some protection is better than none, and leather would provide some protection. The original assertion regarding protection does in fact have a citation. The whole controversy is about avoiding the historical truth about the Barbary War and to bowdlerize historical representation of Muslims. Hence politics turns an article into a mishmosh of contradictions.

Just one more example of why Wikipedia is worse than no source.

The problem with "Conservative" Humor, is it must be very, very careful. THey know thy're being watched closely. Liberal/leftists who control the media are itching to cancel them for any possible deviation too far from the party line.

One reason Gutfeld has the black wrestler on his show is because he's funny. The other reason is protection from cries of Racism.

The potential censorship even affected Limbaugh, who got less and less funny as time went on. He knew the sponsers would get rid of him if he went "too far". Tell a joke that hits the Liberal/left powers that be too hard, and you're GONE.

I'm readng a Bio of Ronald Dahl - Charlie and Chocolate Factory - and the liberals in the publishing industry were trying to censor and change his writings. That year, it was given to an artist whose piece was a large mixed-media portrait, mounted on stands made of compacted elephant dung. It was accompanied by a dense paragraph discussing the symbology of each medium (including the dung). I said then and I maintain today, if your art requires that much explanation on first viewing or experience, it fails as art.

It's fine to build in layers of meaning that the interested art experiencer can explore as time goes on. But for heaven's sake. If your art can't even catch someone's attention...

I enjoyed Red Eye, although it was on late. Never understood why he was taken off that show. I never took to the 5, although they did have good chemistry. Largely stopped watching cable news channels in middle of 2016 campaign.

For the Post, just showing an African-American who isn't obsessed by race is "mocking" people who are obsessed by race (and may happen to be Black). Is that maybe a little strange? Wouldn't exaggerating the caricature qualify more as mocking than downplaying it does? Reporting on satire usually doesn't concern itself with who's being mocked, if the writer considers them worthy of mockery.

Gutfeld! is the only news related show I watch routinely. He elevates the news from tragedy to farce - thank goodness. His cast of sidekicks is well suited for his approach. Tom Shillue's impression of Biden is just so good (he's also the Angry White Male). The show is like a group of friends sitting around and discussing the day - after drinks.

I like Tyrus because he breaks the stereotype of a muscular guy being unable to be profound. He has great insights.

Juan Williams was not stupid, but he only had a few cards to play, and his shocked face got old. Geraldo . . . eh. Not quite meh. Interesting life, plays to his egotistical image cheerfully.

Tarlov annoys, but is more a yenta than a witch. Most media libwives are the latter IMO.

Harold Ford, Jr is a credit to the family dynasty. They were as powerful as the Crump Machine they eventually came to replace, and many were elected to office and disgraced. His father served in Congress for donkey's years, and was noted for great constituent service whether for Rs or Ds (though he was pretty hard-D in voting). Escaped conviction in a complicated fraud case.

Junior is squeaky clean AFAIK, in the manner of such third-or-fourth gen scions.

Oh look! They're on. Maybe I'll live-comment!

Nah.

Punk was working class music, and the working class have always been culturally conservative.“

Nonsense. What came to be called “punk” was art-rock mostly for and by middle-class college grads (the Ramones being partially an exception). “Punk” encompassed a variety of bands and musical styles—Talking Heads, Richard Hell and the Void Oids, Television, Blondie, and Ramones being among the most prominent of the very early bands. (It came to be called “punk” largely because NYC zine PUNK covered the CBGB scene, whence “punk” was spawned.) These bands played “art music,” raw though it was. Of course, punk became associated with the proletariat primarily due to the English bands who were inspired by the New York bands. They were mostly knockoffs of the Ramones or New York Dolls musically, a riotous clamor that was exciting and rapturous. Then the American hard core scene came along and US football hooligans were drawn to the blunt roar of the style.

Why? They were a revelation when they appeared, shocking and thrilling. Their sings are, underneath it all, great pop songs. Like most bands, their early years and albums were their best, but they never became embarrassing or bad.

"Mapplethorpe and Serrano are to art as repo men are to private ownership."

You may find their subject matter objectionable, but they make formally beautiful pictures. "PISS CHRIST" is a magnificent image. Would you be as offended by it if the golden liquid in which the crucifix was submerged was ginger ale or beer?

I couldn't ID three punk bands and their greatest hits, but I used to work with the original drummer for Panther Burn, who helped create punk at the old Antenna Club here.

Speaking of Gutfeld!, one of his guests has been Walter Kirn, who IIRC wrote a weird essay in Harpers some decades ago, lamenting the sad state of rock music, which was rapidly leaving good taste behind.

Rock music and good taste. Yeah, yeah, yeah!

So? What is is intrinsically offensive to you about that? The image itself is beautiful, probably the best depiction of Christ on the cross I've ever seen.

Gutfeld wasn't taken off Red Eye. He created the show and he left after a number of years when he became a panelist on The Five.

I recall Gutfield on both Red Eye and The 5 for a number of years, like all The 5 panelists were on other shows.
