One more day without a sunrise picture. Once again it was bitterly cold and windy.

"Over the spring and summer of 2020, thousands of businesses were looted, damaged, or totally destroyed during the George Floyd protests—especially here, where Floyd was killed. Every day we read heartbreaking stories of business owners begging and pleading with rioters to spare their livelihoods, many of them uninsured, pleas that went unheeded. There was over $2 billion in property damage.

And yet, to follow the mainstream news, you'd be forgiven for thinking the destruction of cities across the country—the decimation of small businesses, many of them owned by lower income people of color—wasn't the biggest story of violence in recent history."

Matt Taibi's substack: "A Tale of Two Authoritarians" has been posted for free by a Ron Paul page. link to that here

The jarring scene of Darth Vader Cheney being warmly welcomed by the democrats on the anniversary of Jan6 is properly put in context by the most scrupulous Jounalist we have right now. Here is a small excerpt.

In a story entitled “Dick Cheney returns to the House and receives a warm welcome . . . from Democrats,” the Washington Post wrote that “Democrats put aside their fierce and lasting policy divides with the Cheneys to thank them for condemning the attack and Trump’s continued effort to undermine the 2020 presidential election results with his false claims of fraud.”

(News writing has become a pre-fab profession, like assembling IKEA furniture. All you need is an Allen wrench and a list of the latest clichés. “Trump’s efforts to undermine the 2020 election” has replaced “Trump’s efforts to coordinate with the Russian government in its election interference activities,” and “Trump’s false claims of fraud” has replaced “Trump’s false claims of ‘fake news.’” Part of the significance of January 6th is that it updated popular propaganda stock, which had grown stale.)

I don’t mean to understate the seriousness of January 6th, even though it’s been absurdly misreported for over a year now. No one from a country where these things actually happen could mistake 1/6 for “a coup .” In the real version, the mob doesn’t take selfies and blaze doobies after seizing the palace, and the would-be dictator doesn’t spend 187 minutes snacking and watching Fox before tweeting “go home.” Instead, he works the phones nonstop to rally precinct chiefs, generals, and airport officials to the cause, because a coup is a real attempt to seize power. Britannica says the “chief prerequisite for a coup is control of all or part of the armed forces, the police, and other military elements.” We saw none of that on January 6th, but it’s become journalistic requirement to use either “coup” or “insurrection” in describing it...

On the NYT story starting to whitewash the FBI involvement on Jan 6, 2021, more than 200 comments.
None noted that either the FBI had informants, or it didn't.
a) It did have informants. So, who were they, what did they do, what did they say they expected on Jan 5, or Jan 4.
The fact that Pelosi told the Capitol Police to reject more Nat Guards on Jan 4 is very suspicious, but it seems neither NYT nor the Jan 6 whitewash committee are reporting on it.
Failure of the FBI to honestly state what it knew, and what its agents did (& who they were) indicates they are hiding their actions - like the guilty.

b) No FBI informants - despite many weeks of Stop the Steal, and organizing, and complaining about the stolen elections by many Trump supporters. Total incompetence.

I believe (a), not (b).
And why did the FBI do it?
a) to avoid looking at the many many irregularities of the election, especially the many mail-in ballots that were included that weren't fully documented / with signatures verified.

PLUS
b) to prove that "Trump is Hitler". For 5 years, since Trump first declared his candidacy, there has been constant dishonest claims by elites that Trump is Hitler. This thing, or that thing is fascist - he wants to take over the government.
All such accusations were false, fake, Fake, FAKE.
BUT,
if Trump is to blame for riot / out of hand no-longer peaceful protest, then it proves he really was Hitler.
Democrats who've been lying for 5 years about Trump needed Trump to be Hitler, to justify the hate they have for him, and the great feelings of moral superiority they feel by hating Hitler-Trump.
Trump Derangement Syndrome, much like Bush Derangement Syndrome (when coined), as well as Palin Derangement Syndrome (which continued some even after Obama won).

I call it Democrat Delusion Syndrome.

Deluded Democrats need "insurrection", not merely protest out of hand.
The FBI gave it to them.

Thanks to Ann for reading the NYT - so I don't have to.
Also, hope this year is Happy for you and Meade.

In an earlier post, Prof. Althouse referred admiringly to the presentation of Solicitor General Prelogar. I want to explore that more thoroughly:

from https://thepostmillennial.com/so-when-does-the-emergency-end-justice-barrett-asks-on-behalf-of-the-american-people

In my opinion, Prelogar does not come across well in this exchange. And she does not ever really answer the question of whether the Presidential "emergency" authority can be extended permanently. The following is from a press report of the exchange between Justice Barrett and General Prelogar.

"Congress did not 'clearly' grant the Secretary of Labor authority to impose this vaccinate-or-test mandate," Sutton wrote.

Barrett referenced this dissent, saying that "OSHA did not adopt this rule in response to the emergency qua emergency because that had been ongoing since early 2020, but, instead, it responded to new facts on the ground which included the widespread availability of a vaccine, that maybe it was a surprise many people chose to forgo, and the emergence of the Delta variant."

"And Chief Judge Sutton," Barrett continued, "pointed out that in an extended pandemic, or I don't know if we've moved to an endemic, such as this one, facts will continually change. New variants will emerge. There might be new treatments, new vaccinations. We have boosters now, right? So now full vaccination might not just be the two jabs; it might include a booster as well."

"So when does the emergency end?" She asked

"I mean, a lot of this argument has been about Congress's failure to act," she went on, elaborating on that question. "Two years from now, do we have any reason to think that COVID will be gone or that new variants might not be emerging? And when must OSHA actually resort to its regular authority and go through notice and comment and not simply be kind of doing it in this quick way, which doesn't afford people the voice in the process that they are otherwise entitled to?"

Prelogar answered: "Congress defined when the emergency exists. It labeled this an Emergency Temporary Standard, but it's dictated by the statutory requirements. So there has to be a grave danger from a physically harmful agent or a new hazard, and the measures have to be necessary to protect against that danger. And we don't think that there is an additional free-floating requirement about emergency status that has to be taken into account."

"So it could be an emergency two more years from now?" Barrett asked.

"Well, I certainly take the point that the emergency can be of substantial duration. Of course, this is not a way to—to bypass notice and comment permanently. Congress further specified that the agency is expected to conduct a rulemaking process over six months, and that's why the agency estimated the lives saved, the hospitalizations prevented over the six-month life of the rule," Prelogar responded, essentially saying that the administration has to enact this emergency rule while Congress takes its time to decide if the rule should be enacted at all.

Newsweek: Biden's Former Health Advisers Urge Him to Change COVID Strategy, Accept 'New Normal'

The first article, "A National Strategy for the "New Normal" of Life With COVID," states that policy makers must update their messaging strategy and accept COVID-19 as the "new normal" and redefine the level of risk it poses on the nation.

In the other two articles, the health experts offer new strategies on how the nation can approach testing, surveillance, and mitigation strategies. They also discuss new ways the United States can promote access to COVID-19 treatment therapies and offer alternative vaccine administration options.

"The 'new normal' requires recognizing that SARS-CoV-2 is but one of several circulating respiratory viruses that include influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and more," the authors write. "COVID-19 must now be considered among the risks posed by all respiratory viral illnesses combined."

Philly's vax passport mandate ramping up.
"For the first two weeks of this mandate, these establishments may choose to accept proof of a negative COVID-19 test within 24 hours of entry for people who are not fully vaccinated. This exception will end, and everyone will need to be fully vaccinated, on January 17, 2022. After January 17, negative tests will no longer be allowed to be used to get into food establishments.

This mandate applies to the following settings that serve food:

Indoor restaurant spaces
Cafes within larger spaces (like museums)
Bars
Sports venues that serve food or drink for onsite consumption
Movie theaters
Bowling alleys
Other entertainment venues that serve food or drink for onsite consumption
Conventions (if food is being served)
Catering halls
Casinos where food and drink is allowed on the floor
Food court seating areas should be cordoned off and have someone checking vaccine status on entry to the seating area "

UPDATE: Alleged Antifa member targeted Florida rally with a bomb; more explosives found at his house

Garrett James Smith, 22, was arrested and found carrying an active pipe bomb, Antifa propaganda and a written document on what to bring for his direct action. He had recently returned from Portland, Ore.

Snippets:

"Smith was purportedly targeting dozens of the attendees of a rally protesting the treatment of Jan. 6 suspects on the one-year anniversary of the U.S. Capitol riot."

"...A search of Smith's home he shares with his parents in Oldsmar, Fla. revealed more explosives, tape and nails for use in grenades. Smith’s “direct action” checklist included a drawing of an umbrella, a symbol adopted by Antifa militants for their frequent use of black umbrellas to shield one another from cameras while they commit acts of violence or vandalism. The helmet found in his backpack during his arrest had the Antifa “iron front” symbol painted on it."

"Sheriff Gualtieri said that Smith is refusing to cooperate in the investigation. And although he stopped short of speculating on what possible motives Smith may have had and who he wanted to target, the arrest affidavit lists "ANTIFA" and anti-government violent extremism as aggravating factors in his arrest."

She went public about the incident at NYC radio station and also announced she tested positive for COVID-19.

In the time of covid protocols, this is not supposed to happen. If true there’s going to be some repercussions. At the very least the head of security for the team is going to lose his job.

Looking at Clyde's solution for yesterday, it's becomes pretty clear that lucky guesses play a large part in getting it in three, I got that one in three, but I can see how lucky I was. Starting with ATONE, I would have followed the same course. I just didn't think of FORGE, for one thing.

ATONE is a nice seed word because it pretty much gets all of the vowels out right away, but I still prefer SATED to get the most common vowels out of the way and the most common consonants. And I have been getting the majority in three with that strategy. SATED ruled out POISE and HORDE in that example, and tons of other common words. I guess it's a question of the value of ruling out words with common consonants vs ruling in words with common vowels.

rehajm said...

I’m beginning to believe utilizing an ADIEU or one of the other skeleton key type words, third guess is consistently achievable. ADIEU first, burner word second, think think think…solve third is a repeatable strategy, unless the word has two or more single letter variants, in which case guessing the wrong variant leads to a fourth guess solve…or worse.

How to improve on this? Changing up the first guess might lead to fewer letter discovers, so maybe a second guess solve becomes a possibility but it also risks a higher frequency of fourth guess or more. I’m wondering if there’s a detectable pattern of the daily word, like tomorrow must be sufficiently dissimilar to today. TIMER must never follow TIGER, or such in which case mixing up the first word might lead to more frequent second guess solves…

…and there’s always the chance the word is your skeleton key but I’m not holding my breath. Speaking of holding my breath the best strategy might be the twitter guy what first guesses FARTS because the day he gets FARTS in one guess will be the most glorious day ever.

Can’t disagree…

The reason I picked ATONE for my seed word on my first try at the game was that it has the three most common vowels and the two most common consonants in English words. I was taught that the order of frequency was ETAOINSHRDLU, although that might vary for five-letter words.

Clyde said...

Although I’m reading that was the what Samuel Morse cam up with. More recent research has EARIOTNSLCUD. I may have to back to the drawing board for another seed word.

Narr said...

It seems obvious that with five letters there is definitely a best play, statistically, and I see that others have figured it (them?) out. A good first guess almost guarantees a good score, while a bad one almost guarantees a bad one.

SHRDLU was the title of the newspaper or newsletter of the International Typographical Union.

MadisonMan said...

My guesses today were TRIPE, RAKES, and then (screwing it up), LEMON. I looked for a long time at the remaining letters available and settled on the actual word.

Jaq said...

"I’m wondering if there’s a detectable pattern of the daily word, like tomorrow must be sufficiently dissimilar to today."

Yeah, I think that there is some kind of bias towards words with lower frequency letters, letters with higher scrabble scores, but that's just a hunch.

@Clyde, you are right of course, I am thinking that maybe I just like to get 'S' and 'D' off of the table, if possible, since they rule out most plurals, and past tense forms.

"I looked for a long time at the remaining letters available and settled on the actual word."

Taking your time with the third guess is everything.

Clyde said...

The other thing I read is that the most common first letter is S. So, something like STARE or SATER (if that is an acceptable word) might be a good play.
