"Harry Truman-style, Biden should press Republicans about what benefits they propose to deny to Americans who need them."

Writes E.J. Dionne in "Biden needs a reboot. Fighting for democracy is the key" (WaPo).

That got me wondering what "Harry Truman style" actually looked like, so I watched this:

Here's the text of the full speech (from September 1948). Here's part that's in the video:
It does my heart good to see the grain fields of the Nation again. They are a wonderful sight. The record-breaking harvests you have been getting in recent years have been a blessing. Millions of people have been saved from starvation by the food you have produced. The whole world has reason to be everlastingly grateful to the farmers of the United States. In a very real sense, the abundant harvests of this country are helping to save the world from communism. Communism thrives on human misery. And the crops you are producing are driving back the tide of misery in many lands. Your farms are a vital element in America's foreign policy. Keep that in mind, that is of vital importance to us and to the world.

He's praising the people for the good they have done. It makes me think of JFK's "ask what you can do for your country" encouragement, but what Dionne is talking about is what your country can do for you — "what benefits [Republicans] propose to deny":

Do they want less child care? Less health coverage? More expensive drugs? No tax breaks under the child tax credit? And do recalcitrant Republican governors want an unending pandemic?...

But I read the whole Truman speech, beyond the part in that little video clip, and you can see how Truman gets around to denigrating Republicans. It's quite long, so these are highlights. And by the way, he had an audience of 80,000.

So long as the farmer, the worker, and the businessman pull together in the national interest, this country has everything to hope for. But it is terribly dangerous to let any one group get too much power in the Government. We cannot afford to let one group share the Nation's policies in its own interest, at the expense of the others. That is what happened in the 1920's, under the big business rule of the Republicans. Those were the days when big corporations had things their own way.
The policies that Wall Street big business wanted were the policies that the Republicans adopted.... You remember the results of that Wall Street Republican policy.... That was a painful lesson....
The Wall Street reactionaries are not satisfied with being rich. They want to increase their power and their privileges, regardless of what happens to the other fellow. They are gluttons of privilege. These gluttons of privilege are now putting up fabulous sums of money to elect a Republican administration. Why do you think they are doing that? For the love of the Republican candidate? Or do you think it is because they expect a Republican administration to carry out their will, as it did in the days of Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover? I think we know the answer. I think we know that Wall Street expects its money this year to elect a Republican administration that will listen to the gluttons of privilege first, and to the people not at all.
Republican reactionaries want an administration that will assure privilege for big business, regardless of what may happen to the rest of the Nation.... You're not going to be fooled again by the slick propaganda of Wall Street.... What they have taken away from you thus far would be only an appetizer for the economic tapeworm of big business....
In this 20th century, every great step forward has come during Democratic administrations of the National Government. Every movement backward has come under Republican auspices....

I like the thematic unity about food. From the image of millions of human beings eating Iowa-grown food, Truman shifts to figurative eating by the "gluttons of privilege," "the economic tapeworm of big business."

That's just one Truman speech, but it attacks Republicans for extending privilege to big business, and Dionne's idea is to attack Republicans for being less enthusiastic about various benefits that Democrats want to flow to individuals. It might be hard to go "Truman-style" about how much money should go to child care and health care.

Dionne only devotes one paragraph to his Biden-as-Truman idea. He immediately swaps in a Biden-as-Reagan notion:

[Biden] also needs to be more vividly Reagan-esque in describing the stronger, fairer and more prosperous country he’s trying to build. Biden is not bowing to some “liberal wish list.”...

Ridiculous. First Dionne imagines Biden getting fiery about all the things Democrats want to give people and then he has him going big about how he's not doing that. Thanks for the useless advice, E.J.

And I rather imagine that McCarthy really has a laundry list of boondoggles from the bill that he could put in front of voters that would drive Biden’s and Democrats’ poll numbers into the upper twenties.

We already have safely nets and tons of socialism in place. How about we fund what we have - which R's always do - and stop adding to the pile.

The problems with Biden acting Trumanesque and Reaganesque are, first, Biden has dementia, and second, Biden's policies are antithetical to what Truman and Reagan wanted - a stronger, more prosperous US. I note also that Dionne isn't suggesting Biden be more Carteresque, or Clintonian, for what I am sure are reasons beyond the understanding of us mere mortals.

The left want messaging over substance. The real substance to redial leftwing-democratic politics is to destroy America, so they can greater and greater power.

"Harry Truman-style, Biden should press Republicans about what benefits they propose to deny to Americans who need them."

"propose to deny": the default is always that government must act, taxes must be raised, and Dems must be right. Anyone else is a denier.

Anyway, the notion that Slow Joe can mimic either Truman or Reagan is indeed ridiculous. Do Dems believe their own BS?

The deeper difference goes beyond style. Truman and Reagan loved their country. Modern Dems despise racist Amerikkka.

“Ridiculous. First Dionne imagines Biden getting fiery about all the things Democrats want to give people and then he has him going big about how he's not doing that. Thanks for the useless advice, E.J.”

But it is fun to contemplate. Just imagine Biden, in his little theater down in the bowels of EOB 1, pretending to be in the White House nearby, starting strong, then a couple minutes later losing where he was on his Teleprompter, and starting to mumble about Corn Pop, or whoever, and about something he imagined he did a half century earlier, and on and on. The few Republicans watching will have turned it into a drinking party, while the Democrats turn it off out of embarrassment, both for his sake, and their own, for having voted for such a senile incompetent. And then his wife kindly leads him off the stage, as his speech is cut mercifully short.

I notice an increasing number of advice articles for Biden like this one. Democrat supporters know Biden’s presidency is failing and are looking for a reboot without jettisoning their dreams for ever-increasing government. Articles like this one are simply a reframing to attempt to get the upper hand on Trump’s America First populist agenda. It will be very interesting to see if Biden attempts to distance himself from the Bernie Sanders agenda which is very unpopular outside the radical left.

We could have a national conversation about the way Trump raised the standard of living of all Americans including record gains for all minorities…all in a very short period of time and in spite of overwhelming resistance but lefties don’t wanna have that national conversation…

I sincerely doubt Biden has much of an idea what's in the various proposals he's pushing. It was all decided and written by someone else, Joe is just along for the ride. Ask him to detail what's in these trillion-dollar proposals, and you'll likely get a Biden-salad of useless gibberish. But that's the way we are governed now.

He writes: "Biden needs a reboot. Fighting for democracy is the key"

You don't fight for democracy by sending the FBI and DoJ to harass parents attending school board meetings. You don't fight for Democracy while opening wide our borders with the goal of replacing existing citizens. You don't fight for Democracy by putting people in jail, in isolation, for 8 months and counting, with no charges- simply because they are to be used as pawns by the Government to make a point. You do not fight for Democracy by fighting to disallow election integrity laws passed by states. Election integrity is Democracy. Without it, there is only Venezuela. Or California. Take your pick.

And finally, as any WaPo "journalist" should know- you don't fight for Democracy by censoring views that don't fit a pre-approved narrative. My loathing of our press could not run any deeper.

But his idea that Biden can "fight" for anything is hampered by the reality of Biden's senility. In order to "fight" you need to be able. The Federal government has spent trillions upon trillions of (our) dollars and decades of effort on things that would be oh so good.

Like eliminating poverty, stopping drug deaths, lowering crime, feeding the poor, fighting racism, educating our kids.... and on and on.

Is poverty gone? Are drug deaths eliminated? How's that crime rate? I've been told systemic racism is horrifying. And educating our kids, surely they are the top in the world. Right?

But now we need more trillions because the past efforts fell short. Indeed, many of the problems have worsened.

For example we spend more money per student than ANYONE. Yet our kids are far down the charts in such primary functions of schools like math and reading. So a bill with pre-K (don't look at Head Start non-results), "free" community college for kids with a diploma that doesn't require 8th grade reading comprehension, and larded with CRT (under any other name). Boy, THAT's the ticket.

So, sure, Build Back Better.... feh.

Yes and he was criticized when he walked in Pendergast's funeral. What he said then has been a rule of my life since I read it. Truman was a student of Roman history. He referred to a known Roman Senator and said, "His downfall began when he took his friends for granted and tried to bribe his enemies." That is a profound rule of life. We see it violated by every politician except Trump.

Wilbur বলেছেন...

I never thought much of Truman, even after reading the Plain Speaking book. He just seemed like your normal midwestern Democratic pol I knew of in the 60s and 70s, plain-spoken and probably at least a little crooked. Repubs were not much better, and sometimes more crooked.

I used to laugh - my father, just a small city fireman, would always refer to Harry (the rare occasions he would) as "Horse Shit Truman". It was the only time I ever heard him use a Seven Dirty Word.

I was a populist on the left, and I’m a populist on the right. I just changed parties, not beliefs.

Most big firms are completely Democrat now.

It has been very interesting to watch a new alliance emerge, post-Trump. It’s hard to map because it’s all over the map. But it’s there. Centrists and extremists (both right and left), social conservatives and liberal-leftists. In real time, this is pretty amazing, especially because all the journalists and public intellectuals are telling us that precisely the opposite is happening. I don’t see it. I see people yearning for a time past labels and a recommitment to something unifying.

That has nothing to do with D.C.

Yes, the advice is useless but it is also telling. The Dem pundits and mouth-pieces (Dionne is more the later than the former) don't know what to do or how to address the mess they find themselves in. So their solution is a repeat of 'spend, spend spend and tax, tax, tax' stuff that worked long ago, but they seem surprised that it doesn't work any more. A big part of the problem is that so much of the 'spend' part goes to privileged Dem constituencies rather than ordinary voters -- so, the teacher's unions, the enviro feed-lot, health care unions, etc. As for the 'tax' part, most people know how that works out. And the CRT stuff that permeates all of it is pure electoral poison.

I met E.J. Dionne in person once at a cocktail party. I couldn't believe what a nebbishy dweeb he was.

It wouldn't be like that with Althouse commenters, would it? All the women would be witty and beautiful, and the men would be strong, urbane, and amusing, each of them attractive in his own way, but mysterious.

In the corner is Meade. Althouse says, "He is certainly good-looking. Rather like Hoagy Carmichael in a way. A comma of black hair falling down over his right eyebrow. Much the same bones. But there is something a bit cruel in the mouth."

Althouse herself is in another corner, maintaining a cruel neutrality. Who is she, and what does she want? Is she more Tatiana Romanova or Honeychile Rider? Is she part of Pussy Galore's Flying Circus? Will Meade write to her in Sing-Sing?

Chuck is--well--Chuck. A life-long Republican, he says. But can we believe him? Freder Frederickson says we can. Howard says, "Who cares? Life is a cabaret, old chum..." Drago, Dr. Michael K, and David Begley are having none of it.

I propose... NO WORK... NO EAT.

You see signs that say, "Don't Feed the Bears", or "Don't feed the wildlife". Why? Cause it encourages them to come and get 'free stuff'. You are making the mistake of giving people 'free money' or 'free food' just encouraging them to not work for it.

So you need signs that say, "NO WORK, NO EAT". And give make work for the homeless. Clear highway trash, help build infrastructure, fixing graffiti, cleaning streets, even highway flagmen (not all homeless are crazy, some are just lazy.) I am sure there are ways they can work for their meals and lodging such as pre-fab houses they can stay in (for a low rent) as they work.

Now I am not saying to refuse to help the TRULY NEEDY. The crippled, blind, deaf, those that have a very hard time fitting into society. Yes there is compassion for those. Places like the Salvation Army where there are RULES (no drugs, go to church, try to find a job, etc..) I've toured the Salvation Army.. nice little apartments. They serve food there to. But they require some effort on those that go there.

Seems like long time ago this guy, Captain John Smith, said the same thing at Jamestown a three hundred years ago or so... so did St. Paul, two thousand years ago, wrote in 2 Thessalonians 3:10, "For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, If any will not work, neither let him eat. "

So.. NO WORK, NO EAT.
