If we are going to blame the Afghani for much of their plight, does that mean we should blame the residents of, let's say Baltimore, for example, for their plight? Why, yes! Yes, we should.

Picture 2 is very lovely...would make great wallpaper if it were turned into some sort of illustration.

I wonder what other events in A-stan will be "unforeseen". Will the Taliban go full Pol Pot and start executing people in the streets or selling off the women as brides to their warriors? Will some terrorist faction there use the tactical advantage of a safe haven to plan another monster attack.....I'm not sanguine. I'm pretty sure that the bad news will get worse and then horribly unimaginably worse. But maybe not. A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, I thought that the Iraqis would greet us as liberators when we overthrew Saddam. Maybe this time, there will be a different kind of surprise and unicorns and rainbows will appear in that war ravaged land.

I assume that if this isn't considered rewarding, Althouse won't post, but this is for Mike in Snoqualmie (who still comments) and just wondering how his new home is coming along, including any comments re: the local gov't (King County). Always enjoyed Mike's status reports.

Did you say Pol Pot? The genocidal maniac and his regime of terror and starvation? The one that the US sided with, along with China, so angry did the Vietnamese success make them?

That's who I thought you meant.

There really isn't much to laugh about today but I did find this funny. Kato Kaelin tweeted that Biden sprinted out of his press conference like he was trying to catch a plane out of Kabul.

Kato Kaelin, I haven't thought about him in years. That was the big thing in the summer of 1995, the OJ trial. Bill Clinton was President and Joe Biden was in the Senate. Where he was actively pushing for intervention in the Balkans (according to Wikipedia). Because we had so much at stake there. Unlike Afghanistan.

I know, two different things.

Meade: "an enormous mugging by Reality. I sometimes forget that about half of the people are determined to live in a fantasy world of utopian Progressivism."

So do I, but not for long.

May I say that I like feisty Meade in his recent comments? Though I hate the things that make it necessary for him to be feisty. Or should I say disgusted? Anyway, I appreciate the fighting spirit, and I appreciate Althouse for reopening a space for us to share these things.

Our home site is ready for construction. We're waiting for financing; getting an appraiser took way more time than I wanted plus the mortgage guy we were working with was fired for not doing his job, like ordering our appraisal. We expect to close on September 7th, and start on the foundation two weeks later, about September 21, the last day of summer. We're told it takes 7 months to build, so we should be complete around April 21.

We went appliance shopping today because of all the supply chain issues. It could take 8 months to get our appliances (refrigerator, stove and washer/dryer). We visited three stores, Albert Lee, Arnolds (both in Bellevue) and King & Bunnies in the Renton Highlands. Ended up going back to Albert Lee, which is the store we're going to buy from.

I'm blogging about the site development and house construction at tokulacres.com. Tokul is the neighborhood north of Snoqualmie.

Thanks for asking, Kathryn51.

I enjoy seeing your photos of more or less the same place at different times of the year. It seems like just a short time ago that the lake was frozen solid (at least near the shore -- with interesting ice formations in some of your photos). Here in the California Central Valley, each day for the past couple of months has been drearily similar to the last -- hot and sunny (with occasional blankets of smoke thrown in), with more of the same to look forward to.

My wife is of the opinion that once you've been to a place once, there's no sense in returning. It drives me crazy. I've tried the old "you can't step in the same river twice" saying to no avail.

I too would like to hear how things are going for Mike in Snoqualmie

And, in case anyone is interested in an update on me, I'm doing as well as can be hoped, and better than expected. Since my stem cell transplant in September my tests have shown no sign of Multiple Myeloma. No, I'm not cured, that doesn't happen. And I'm still on chemo, with a side effect of fatigue that makes me want to lie down any chance I get. But, there are worse side effects, and much worse test results, so who am I to complain?

Besides, I can sleep as much as I want once I'm dead...

I just have a question. How’s the Lincoln Project, Bill Kristol taking the withdrawal from Afganistán? Talk about a blow.

Your pictures are the best part of your blog. Will you be publishing a book of them, or perhaps a separate section containing just them?

Wa St Blogger বলেছেন...

I wouldn't say the pictures are the best part, but they are a great part. I would totally replace the standard daily image scrolling on my opening screen with Althouse sunrise photos.

Ceciliahere বলেছেন...

Your sunrise photos are lovely. But, the plants photo of this a.m. is so far my favorite…beautiful. Suitable for framing!

Prof's pix are the best visuals on her blog, but not the best reason to visit, IMO.
