"Why was [Andrew Cuomo] celebrated for so long?"

The headline for an article at New York Magazine is "Abuse and Power Andrew Cuomo’s governorship has been defined by cruelty that disguised chronic mismanagement. Why was that celebrated for so long?"

Was the "governorship" celebrated or was the governor celebrated? I rewrote the headline for my post title because it seemed perversely impersonal and inaccurate to say that people have been celebrating the abstraction. People were celebrating the man. There was some embarrassing fawning.

The NY Magazine article is by Rebecca Traister. She writes: "Cuomo was a bully, but he was our bully." He was also a liar:

“He makes things up like I’ve never seen anyone do before,” said [Bill Lipton, a founder of the Working Families Party]. “He makes people who disagree with him feel like they’re crazy.” It’s a pattern that — like his narcissism, theatrical bombast, love of cameras, hatred of “experts,” and the fact that, as one national reporter who covered him said, “I don’t think he believes in much, except that he wants to be powerful”—makes Cuomo not the anti-Trump that many imagined him, but rather the 45th president’s Democratic twin. Or, as one person put it to me, they are “the same person” but for “two major exceptions: Fred Trump was Donald Trump’s father, and Mario Cuomo was Andrew Cuomo’s father.”

What if the hatred for Trump is really envy? The haters just want one like that for themselves.

ADDED: These personality traits — narcissism, theatrical bombast, love of cameras, no deeper belief than the love of power — will be found in virtually all politicians. Shy, humble philosophers who shrink at imposing their will on others don't step forward and announce their candidacy. Those of you who fall for  bullies need to take responsibility for your cheesy love affairs.

I think they’re both narcissists but Trump loves America and it’s foundational god-given rights to every citizen. All of his policies were grounded in that love and respect. He never would have sacrificed vulnerable people so hospitals would make more money. Trump worked for the greater good for as many citizens as possible. Cuomo works for his sponsor-donors. Big difference.

Humperdink touches on it. Setting aside the virtues and vices of Donald Trump, the Democrats long ago mortgaged whatever "principles" they had when they defended Bill Clinton. Now the left-wing working class has Biden: a pathetic, demented, useless pedophile serving as the shameless puppet of moneyed elites. The lionization of Andrew Cuomo was never going to withstand scrutiny: conversely, if Trump had a tenth of his positive press, we would have long since abolished Congress and set him up as dictator.

We may still get that chance.

Donna Brazile works for FOX and they interviewed her about Cumo. She tried to act like the adult in the room and calmly advocated for the process to work itself out. She had no opinion on 'metoo', or 'believe all women'. She shrouded herself in the impenetrable shroud of process, in her opinion, it was way to early to have an opinion of anything Cummo.
When asked if male college students should have process, she wavered and double talked. Then stated firmly, "just like Cummo, students should be allowed all the protections of the legal system.' I instantly saw the goal posts moved. Men getting booted from campus are not subject to the legal system. So Brazile is fine with railroading them off of campus. Cummo is different because, shutup.

The article comes a little late, doesn't it?

All the talk about Trump being a dangerous narcissist missed the point that if he was a narcissist, he was a showbiz narcissist. Cuomo was a politics and power narcissist. Trump wanted to get his name in the papers and on TV. It wasn't his only focus, but often he couldn't help himself. Cuomo wanted to overpower, command, and humiliate people. Again, it wasn't all he was about, but it was a big part of it, and it was hard to miss seeing if you weren't blinded by Trump hatred. What was play with Trump, like the cat-and-mouse games with the press, was deadly earnest with Cuomo.

Barack Obama was likewise more of a showbiz, limelight narcissist, and so was Bill Clinton, though there was a lot of sexual narcissism in him as well. Again, I'm not reducing them to that or saying that it makes them different from other people in politics. New York politics seems to be particularly rich in egotistical, larger than life politicians. Wiener, Spitzer, Schumer, going back to Ed Koch, John Lindsay, Nelson Rockefeller, Robert Moses, Fiorello LaGuardia, Jimmy Walker, and the Roosevelts. It's a very big stage. They don't call it the Empire State for nothing.

I’m often reminded of Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ brilliant Selena Myers in Veep. Willing to do, say, embrace, or reject anything at all in her quest for power, she was weirdly powerless, captive to the polls and the handlers. She was abusive to those in her personal sphere, the people who depended on her for their livelihoods, but she had no power at all over her own life. She was an abusive, manipulative puppet.

Many (most?) politicians, Cuomo certainly among them, are exactly the same way.

That's a large category. And once you purge all rival power centers, what stops Trump from just waltzing back in?

I can see it being done for Michelle Obama, but the problem would be that not even Oprah could carry that Wookie over the finish line. Four years of Biden will have a mob ready to burn down DC.

Lloyd W. Robertson said...

I favour throwing Cuomo overboard; the timing is a bit suspicious. Trying to distract attention from Biden's very real failings?

Surely the direction of the woke is to have no heroes. They seem to know very little about any president or, you know, history. Apparently all they know about Billy Clinton is that he was some kind of reactionary and racist. Cracking down on crime and using the expression "super-predator"; obviously declaring open season on young black males and dog-whistling to bigoted whites that they will remain comfortable.

Now Biden brings back a version of AFDC, "welfare as we know it" (in 1992), cash for having babies, possibly the worst government program in history. A program Clinton made a point of eliminating. In a context where jobs are getting scarcer for people with few skills (parts of rural Trump country, the inner city) it is a disaster to encourage women to remove themselves from work and even from much of the economy. Even affluent young people will sit around with their devices, using drugs; people on welfare may do little else. I would think gang-bangers like the cash for baby mamas program; it saves fathers from taking any responsibility for their kids, so daddy can show up every so often with gifts like a sugar daddy. The whole culture can be like a pirate cave, somewhat cut off from, and hostile to, any kind of middle-class life or mainstream society. Clinton favoured supporting work as a path to real freedom; today's Dems are opposed to that? They think it was racist for Clinton to abolish AFDC?

What will the woke think when they discover JFK--the real JFK?

I read that article last night. It's quite long. Both Cuomo and the writer herself gave me a slow burn. Traister claimed that one of the reasons the press didn't report on Cuomo's failings is because the press is composed primarily of white men. They themselves are part of the white patriarchy that Cuomo embodies. Cuomo used women as his enforcers and surrogate bullies to perpetuate the white patriarchy. The women involved were not real, true feminists and moreover they were white.....Traister was critical of Cuomo because he was too conservative. He banded with the Republicans to keep a woman of color from attaining power in the Albany Senate. The conservative (huh) wing of the NY Democratic Party represents the white patriarchy. The Working Family Party is our true hope for the future. They have a lot of women and people of color. Such people are unacquainted with the sins of racism and sexism that so define white people.

I agree with whoever said getting rid of Cuomo over this was to eliminate an investigation into the nursing home scandal. There are too many red state governors with the same risk. Mine included. Which is why I want him to tough it out.

The NYPost has an article today that Cuomo's aides are not showing up for work.

daskol said...

The question these people need to be asking themselves is why THEY celebrated Cuomo, not why he was celebrated. Because anyone who's taken a closer look at the guy and his tenure at HUD or in Albany could quickly discern what a terrible person he was, even for a politician. They are all bad, but the most ambitious and successful among them are usually the worst. And that ought to help anyone wondering whether Cuomo or Trump are similar in fundamental ways to see the difference between them--even if they were made of the same clay, which they are not, the respective arenas in which they contested would have made different men.

daskol said...

Also, the people now trying to destroy Cuomo, the ones behind the sudden recognition of what an all-consuming asshole he is, are almost certainly far worse than him.

So this is the 2nd time in my life I find myself reconsidering whether Cuomo is as bad as all that, first being when he was giving good pressers early in Corona era, pretending to fight to keep the schools open, for example. I think I'd also like to see him tough it out because the Dem Party establishment is way worse. These are not prog vices. It just depends on whether the person still serves prog purposes or not.

I mean, the bully/liar thing applies to most prog politicians. But their ethics are situational.

As with after-the-fact sob stories about addiction, which somehow never get into actual current addictions, prog enablers of the bullies and liars are never asked what they think about the current bullying and lying, or how they will change their defense of bullies and liars going forward. Which is understandable, since disposing of the disposable serves the cause. Like anything else in the prog playbook, reckonings are tools.

And it's not that they want someone like that. They already have people like that -- not as bad as Cuomo, maybe, but the others come close.

Cuomo knew it was an opportunity to seize the limelight, with a display of seriousness that masked his utter incompetence and stupidity. The adoring press just enabled him, feeding his massive ego but ultimately leading to his well-deserved downfall. He got in way over his head, and was more concerned projecting himself as some great leader and savior than with the actual welfare of New Yorkers. Even though he briefly credited Trump, he couldn’t share the glory with him by sending the elderly sick to the hospital ship Trump provided. Once the deaths began piling up he turned on Trump and made him the scapegoat, again with the blessing of the media. Once Trump was gone, Cuomo became expendable.

Bingo! We have a winner for the thread. In all the recent criticisms, not one of these Cuomo critics from the left have addressed their own mistake. If I look hard enough, what will I find in Traister's own Twitter history, for example? I suspect she was a Cuomosexual, but has probably deleted the tweets pronouncing such orientations. There are apparently no recovered Cuomosexuals at all- they never existed.

Really- Daskol is right- all of these articles are passive in voice. The active participants are now trying to rewrite the history.

Another suggestion for the media: When you love a politician pick, the ugliest, most offensive picture of them that you can find, and when you start to hate them, go with the handsomest or prettiest and least offensive picture there is.

Otherwise it's transparently manipulative and insulting to your readers or viewers and discourages them from concentrating on the strengths and weaknesses of your argument.

There should be hourly updates on the sins of Cuomo. I just read a NY Post article that reported his ex-wife Kerry Kennedy had to look herself in the bathroom at night to escape from his abuse.....I vaguely remember their divorce. I thought he was the injured party because she cheated on him. Maybe not. Or maybe his pr people were better than hers at that time. Maybe now she's using this opportunity to even the score. There are levels of cynicism to the Cuomo Chronicles that we have not yet attained.

Cuomo is no longer [politically] viable. Karmic irony.

The American Spectator website snarkily asks: How Can Anyone Expect Kamala to Call Out Cuomo When She Herself Got Made That Way?

I didn't bother reading the article. The headline more than met my minimum daily requirement for snarkiness.

This guy deliberately killed a bunch of senior citizens of his own state, but the only reason he's in trouble now is because he allegedly harassed some women.

You leftists are seriously fucked in the head if these are your priorities.

Have you ever heard of Andrew Cuomo going out of his way to something nice for a stranger? Now ask the question about Trump. And don't forget about Obama or Biden. Only Trump shines here.

"Those of you who fall for bullies need to take responsibility for your cheesy love affairs." Wow, that sounds nice but it is bullshit. Being bombastic is not being a bully. Fighting back is not being a bully. Trump was left with no choice but to fight with all his might.

Seen on Twitter - Admiring a politician is like thinking the stripper likes you.

I told you: the last election was the dog finally catching the moving car.

Or a slow quicksand, somehow transforming into a fast-hardening concrete.

The Democrats deserve applause for pulling off an ugly "win" but it'll be a hollow (and short-lived) victory in the end.
