In case you're wondering...

... yes, I got rid of the Google AdSense ads on purpose.

I'd only put them back recently because I'd thought, for my own protection, I should open up the flow of information from Google about whether it is getting complaints that this blog — on Google's Blogger — is offensive.

Yesterday, I got email from Google that 3 things had been reported, and I just found it too annoying to look into. Two things were supposedly "sexual" and the other was something I didn't want to waste time trying to understand — a page didn't "behave" properly?

I can't be bothered, and I don't like seeing the ads. Too messy!

Anyway... I'm sure no one will miss the ads, and thanks to everyone who uses the Amazon portal or who contributes through PayPal. (Look at the sidebar to see how to do that.)

Do you know if the complaints about the comments or your actual posts?

I bought "The Deep Rig" about the 2020 election steal via Ann's AMZN portal. The most important book of the year and only $3.99. I'm sure Ann got .02 from my purchase.

Seriously, buy the book. Astounding.

What!! I can't find any more historical typefaces?!!!

Devastated.

Snort.

Now I am curious about the three things.

"Do you know if the complaints about the comments or your actual posts?"

No, but they probably are and I am not going to spend my time looking for the problem. It's beneath me.

Oh sure, THAT's not going to cause any problems for Althouse...

"Now I am curious about the three things."

They're just meaningly bullshit. Don't waste you precious curiosity on such things.

Sound advice for sure, but the lure of the forbidden and all that.

Obviously, I'm not the only one who saw something disturbingly erotic in those lurid Broiler sunrise photos of Ann's the other day. Tone it down, Ann, can't have explicit photos reminding us of our eyes shut orgasmic fireworks!

Ann Althouse ayon kay ...

meaningly...

My ennui is so overwhelming I couldn't rise to the occasion of typing "meaningless."

The price is right. Thanks Google!

Don't blame me, I'm not the one with all the dirty pictures!

daskol ayon kay ...

If Althouse is not one of the writers substack tried to lure with an eye-popping advance, they fucked up. And now we all know all it would take is $90M. Suckers.

Scott ayon kay ...

Ann, you should be archiving your blog elsewhere. Even better, move it to locals.com so that your community can monetize you. I'll be the first to subscribe for $5/month.

You demonstrated a bad attitude. Google doesn't like people with bad attitudes. They have ways . . .

PM ayon kay ...

The page is much cleaner w/o the slit-ads crowding the headlines.
Props for putting aesthetics over moolah.

Tomcc ayon kay ...

The ad content was a bit distracting, but it didn't discourage me. I like the cleaner presentation.

Etc. ayon kay ...

Still expecting an Althouse Substack one day. Of course, I’d be fine with that, but you would have to be able to port your entire blog history, which I am not sure is possible.

I hope Blogger survives! It feels like no one at Google does anything to maintain it.

Adsense violation detection needs work, IMHO. At minimum the system should tell you exactly what and where the problem lies. AI at its finest!

I’ll make sure I click through to Amazon from here from time to time, buy something.

Thanks, those ads were annoying.

AdSense ads? Wuzzat? Did not notice them arriving or departing. Magic of Pi-Hole. As to Amazon, for anything beyond basic groceries it is usually faster and cheaper, and more convenient than planning the 50+ mile round trip to nearest decent shopping, so....

Much better w/o the commercial clutter. I'd pay for substack(?) if it would be better--by the Prof's definition of better. I don't know much about it otherwise.

I'm probably close to a free rider here--I don't order much from amazomb, or use PayPal much.
(The father of the co-inventor of PayPal's was my mother's internist for decades.)

Speaking of which, I guess Prof can tell who puts coin in the hat?

Hi Ken, I appreciate your brave Covid realism. I would never laugh at it. I hope you keep up the good work despite being called “Karen B”. Don’t let them insult you!

John Smith,

What!! I can't find any more historical typefaces?!!!

You mean I'm not the only one who has been getting ads from Walden? I had assumed that it had something to do with other searches I'd done here, b/c my husband at one time was a serious maker of digital fonts, initially for musical and later for other uses.

He is a music copyist who got his start using SCORE, a fearsomely difficult-to-learn but endlessly flexible program originally designed for use on a mainframe that took punch-cards, at Stanford. One of the things it would let you do was insert a symbol of your own design in a "font" you made up yourself; he started by making fonts in the ordinary sense, text to mimic (say_ the Trajanus that Barerenreiter uses for text in its scores, the font used by Edition Peters for "cresc." and the like, &c., but soon he was on to designing his own clefs and sharps and shit like that. He'd type, say, a capital "M" in place of the clef at the beginning of a line of music, and it would appear as a particular sideways-leaning treble clef he liked from a mid-19th c. Peters score. And so forth. (It was great for neumes, too; one font developed for a chant-and-organ piece by Joaquin Nin-Culmell one summer was nothing but neumes, b/c some of the ones in the text he had to copy were very elaborate indeed.)

Anyway, when I started seeing Walden Font ads, I assumed that he had been looking up an old file and the search had somehow triggered a response from the Internet outside. It does happen -- the searching, I mean, not the ad-triggering. Once a couple of years ago he got a call from the offices of Max Eschig, in Paris: Their warehouse had been flooded somehow, and the only copies of La Celestina (an opera -- Nin-Culmell again) had been destroyed; could he print them out a new copy? That sucker was so old that it was stored on 5 1/4" floppies -- no, really! -- but he managed to find it and get it reprinted, though the only way he could get it to print was through a DOS emulator on his iPhone. Yeesh.

Technology. Whatever you think is new now will be ridiculously dated in a decade.

I like Althouse's attitude on not wasting precious time on meaningless bullshit.

I wonder though....who has the time, energy or desire to complain about the stuff on a blog or even any website. Especially the drivel in the comments ------no offense anyone..I spew drivel all the time and proud of it 😁

What kind of petty Stasi Agent** mentality does this take. Don't people have better things to do? If you don't like a blog or website.. don't look! If you don't like the comment someone made...scroll past. OR...get into the spirit of the thing and using your free speech...respond. (like now)

** The Ministry for State Security German: Ministerium für Staatssicherheit, MfS or State Security Service, commonly known as the Stasi, was the official state security service of the German Democratic Republic. It has been described as one of the most effective and repressive intelligence and secret police agencies ever to have existed.

I know the DemoCRAT Party in the US has been developing their own unofficial and now it seems official Stasi system. But really, people, do you have to volunteer and be professional hall monitors and rats.....or?? are you getting paid?

Adblock Plus here. Amen on the shopping convenience through Amazon. 170 mile round trip here. Much of my Amazon shopping bonuses go to a local non-profit library via the Smile program. The ONLY library within hundreds of miles because the County doesn't think we are worthy of even a bookmobile. So....we founded our OWN library all funded through donations (even the building) and volunteers about 20 years ago.

**Pi-Hole. Great! My brother is a retired computer programmer and was a systems analyst for Ames Research Center. He refuses to use Windows and does Linux. He has stated several times the Bill Gates is the Devil. I believe him, but I'm not adept enough to use Linux. Or...maybe that is lazy not adept...maybe both!!!
