The Guardian: Republican senator Ted Cruz mocked for documentary-style trip to US-Mexico border

"Despite his claims that the border situation is a direct result of the Biden administration’s immigration policies, residents in the Rio Grande Valley have said no such crisis exists. In fact, the number of border crossings under the Biden administration largely mirror those under the former Trump administration. Cruz was accompanied by 18 other Republican senators including John Cornyn, Susan Collins and Lindsey Graham."

Link in the Guardian article to WaPo tries, really hard, to explain it away. Maybe they're using IPCC modeling software.

The migrant ‘surge’ at the U.S. southern border is actually a predictable pattern.

It was not until about 11 a.m. today we discovered why:

The 21-year-old Arvada man arrested in Monday’s mass shooting at a Boulder King Sooper’s was violent, short-tempered and paranoid during high school, his former classmates said Tuesday.
Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa is suspected of killing 10 people at the grocery store Monday when he walked in around 2:30 p.m. and began shooting, according to law enforcement. He was taken into custody about an hour later with a gunshot wound in his leg."

15 years ago Duke hate-crime hoax was peddled by media and racial-justice ‘reformers’

"Today is the 15th anniversary of Duke University’s suspension of its Lacrosse team in response to false allegations that members of the team committed a racist gang-rape of a black stripper.

But leading journalists peddled the Duke Lacrosse rape hoax, long after it was disproven by concrete evidence. The defendants in the Duke lacrosse case, charged with an interracial rape, were vindicated by DNA evidence and declared innocent by North Carolina’s state attorney general. But even after the prosecutor was disbarred for misconduct and trying to frame the defendants, left-leaning journalists sought to rehabilitate him. When he faced disbarment, he was defended by self-styled criminal-justice “reformers” and “racial-justice” activists.

In May 2006, the Durham Herald-Sun published an article by the NAACP’s Julius Chambers and former Princeton President William Bowen. Far from recognizing the falsity of the allegations, which had already been debunked by DNA test results, the article argued that Duke had not taken the allegations seriously enough. It made the pernicious, racially-prejudiced claim that the accuser’s claim should be given special weight because she was black and the accused were white."

Browndog,

It is impossible to judge this a quality field of 64. The COVID nonsense has disrupted the season to such an extent that no matter who wins it, it will forever have a big asterisk attached to it. I would guess, based on just game results all year long, Gonzaga is heads and shoulders above the rest of this field, and so far their scores in the tourney support that assertion. Just seeing teams like Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Ohio State, and Iowa in 1 and 2 seeds just screams low quality field to me. Even Baylor looks like a pretender to me on paper. The Pac 12, a doormat at tourney time over a decade, suddenly looking like world beaters seems to evidence that every other conference declined significantly from one year to this one.

New York has a vaccination app that you're going to have to use to get into restaurants there. It's about like a ticket app - you put it on your iphone, load in your vaccination from a data base like the Wisconsin immunization database and you're good to go. You get a green check. Or not. I knew they'd try - that's why it's so serious that the black community is disproportionately not getting vaccinated. Members of the black community can't eat in restaurants, can't work in them, under a Dem Administration. Plus ca change, plus ca la meme chose. Oh well, there's all these Hispanics pouring in. You say they won't be vaccinated? I say their names will be in the database.
But maybe in the free states like Florida and Texas they won't try the fear-state vaccination

Vaccine passports or apps are systemic racism.

You know, a lot of folks laugh at the idea of systemic racism. But it does exist in places. And this is one of them. Because it is well known that a significant proportion of the Black population will not take the vaccine.

And under this plan, no vaccine, no passport to be able to travel or otherwise participate in society. In other words, Blacks are excluded.

Now, that is not only Jim Crow, it is Jim Eagle too.

Well, I will make this prediction then- if vaccine passports actually become a thing in the US, they will only apply to white people. Everyone else will get an exemption.

Yancey Ward said...

“There are people all over the nation, all over the world, that are looking at this to get a sense of how much they can believe in our system of justice,”

It is a test of the character of the jurors, every single one of them. The correct verdict in this case was a foregone conclusion as soon as the medical examiner's report was released. There is literally no way to overcome reasonable doubt in this case for Chauvin or any of the co-defendents on the murder charges- the prosecution will never be able to prove that the knee caused the death and that the death wasn't due to the fentenyl in Floyd's circulatory system. This really is open and shut not guilty on the all the murder charges. Even the charges on involuntary manslaughter would be hard to sustain given that the police had already called the paramedics. The only thread you have here that is viable for the prosecution is to argue they showed indifference because they didn't load him up and take him to the hospital themselves, but Floyd had actively resisted getting into the car in the first place.

I still believe there are people of character on that jury that will do their actual duty here- acquit, but there will never be an acquittal- I don't think you could find 12 jurors that pure and rational. A hung jury is the best I am hoping for. You could hope that the judge in the case is letting it go to trial in the hope that the jury will take him off the hook. If the jury hangs or convicts, the judge is going to face a decision- do a directed verdict or let the injustice stand. I have less faith in the judicial system than I do in 12 ordinary Minnesotans.

Yancey Ward said...

"authorized but not approved."

You really can't officially approve these at the FDA level. They have not met the requirements, which are stringent, for official approval, and I have to believe the same is the case in Canada which would probably just accept an FDA approval as good enough. The problem is that the safety data doesn't meet the requirements for the simple reason that not enough time as elapsed to properly assess the data.

In any case, as a practical matter, it is irrelevant- the emergency use direction allows it to be distributed and given to people. It is an entirely different legal problem, though, whether or not anyone, the government, an employer, or a school can require you take it as terms of employment or admittance. I would suspect not with the present SCOTUS.

Yancey Ward said...

The emergency use designation is usually used on much smaller populations where a new, but unapproved treatment is allowed for people in dire straits for a drug or medical procedure. In other words, I don't know of a single example in the US where the population being treated under emergency use was more than a few thousand.

Yancey,

I think they can be approved eventually. But before they can be approved they have to go through "phase iii trials" that will take at least a year. Then fda has to review the trial and other data before it can approve the vaccine.

Another issue that may be of interest to lawyers is whether the pfizer/Moderna drugs meet the legal definition of "vaccine" if they do, anyone harmed by them cannot sue. They can only request compensation from the federal govt vaccine fund.

I read the legal definition of "vaccine" and I don't think the RNA vaccines meet it. Otoh, it is very confusing to a scientific layman like me. They might legally be "vaccines"

This has nothing to do with whether they work or not. Just who pays if they cause harm.

John Henry

Yancey Ward said...

Stephen,

I should be wrong, but I wouldn't be in that scenario. The very first time a person of color is denied access to anything because he refused to take the vaccine, the writers of the media narrative would go into overdrive explaining how it is systemic racism causing this person a problem, not the fact that he didn't take the vaccine which is required to gain entry. Of course, they will have to contort themselves to allow people of color who didn't take the vaccine exemptions without attacking the vaccine passports themselves, but in today's world that is definitely doable.

They're still vaccinating only people who want to be vaccinated. And I believe that a lot of people are hesitating who will step forward in few months. And J&J single shot finally got approved and people are starting to take that but there isn't a lot of it yet. It's my opinion that the vaccine passport is another bad idea from NYC. stephen cooper said...

Yancey, you make a good point, but here in Northern Virginia, most of us, of whatever color, have lots of friends of other colors.
My point was that the basic human desire to stand by your friends - for example, if I head to the gym with my friends who are of a different race - is gonna trump the socialist insane desire to make people suffer for things they have no choice about.
Anyway, to be fair, here in North Virginia, everything has been open since last August or so. Gyms, restaurants, nightclubs, everything. Well, maybe not movie theaters and schools, but let's face it, movie theaters and schools were always run by the sort of people who .... well, I ain't gonna finish that sentence, but you know what I would have said. When it comes to the sort of places that adults congregate at .....the cops would not dare enforce the rules here. And as the Farr rule kicks in, things will get better. And if the Farr rule does not kick in, and if, in that situation, people realize we are not dealing with a normal natural disaster, well, let's just say that nobody wants to be on the side of people who are pretending that it was a normal natural disaster.

It takes a lot for me to get angry, but this vaccine passport thing - even if it is just a little gleam in the eyes of the evildoers who want to make innocent people suffer - makes me angry. And if it makes a mild, kind-hearted person like me angry, it probably makes tens of millions of normal people a lot angrier than I am.

I was concerned about this sort of thing for months. It's turning out to be more complicated than I imagined. The messaging is a mess.

Doctors keep saying, "We don't know if the vaccine prevents infection, so keep your masks on, vaccinated or not". Oh, but wait! There's evidence the vaccine reduces infection (not much evidence yet, but still...). So, get the vaccine to protect others.

And then, the "variants". "We don't know if the vaccines work against variants, so keep your masks on. And be prepared for booster shots and additional vaccinations for the variants, maybe. Presumably variants will arise....forever.

I am not clear I will ever take a COVID vaccination. I will avoid the mRNA shots. Long term safety and efficacy of the mRNA technology is still an open question.

http://high-fat-nutrition.blogspot.com/2021/03/more-musing-about-vaccines.html

My preference is for the nasal spray, which is under development. It has the best chance of creating antibodies in the nose, which is where they're needed to prevent infection. We'll see.

Such long range problems are a risk for every single drug you take. You can only assess your risk profile and what you will tolerate.

My mother gets one of the vaccines tomorrow (later today now), but I don't know yet which one.
I am worried for her, but not overly so. I have kept up with the side effect reports, and my judgment is that it is right for her take it at her age and health condition. She wants to get back out into the world without the worry- she was doing this already, but I know it weighed on her mind and those of her friends.

I am at very low risk of dying from the disease, so I will probably definitely not get the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine any time soon. The J&J vaccine is the one I am most likely to get at some point, if I get one at all.

Those who've had the dreaded covid- DON'T F---ING NEED IT! regardless of the pronouncements of Quack Fauci, Dictator Cuomo and Brain Addled Biden, who wants an internal passport for the entire USA. So he's asking the Texas courts to grant him full custody as he wants his son to grow up in a free state, not a dictatorship. Texas courts just might buy that argument.

Let's give a quick example of just how f---ing ridiculous a covid passport is.

Case 1. I come upon an accident victim who's bleeding. I stop the bleeding, but don't have the proper PPE to prevent blood exposure.
Case 2. A prison guard or chaplain- or anyone in a prison, has an inmate throw a bag of urine and feces at them. Trust me, it happens.
Case 3. A mentally ill person wandering the streets starts running up and spitting on people.

Guess what? In all those scenarios, it is completely and 100% unlawful for any medical professional to tell you the HIV status of the individual who contaminated you- and HIV is a deadly disease which can now be controlled- for most people- with an incredibly expensive lifetime treatment with drugs. It is also unlawful to inform you of their hepatitis status or anything else contagious they might have- it violates their rights. Your rights to know if you've been exposed to a potentially deadly disease? You don't have any. And that's genuine exposure, not theoretical "Oh, you haven't had a vaccine, so you might possibly have a disease that you and I are both likely to survive" scenario.

The unconstitutional stupid f---ing Excelsior Pass- anyone who looks at immediately knows if you've been vaccinated against a disease with a >98% survival rate. And you're requited to show it to get in- even though that violates HIPAA laws- as the other cases do.

Is it time to start killing lawmakers yet? Seriously, that's the question. How many rights do we let them take away before it's time?

New allegations of child rape against Michel Foucault. I have heard such things before. In the 70s the left wanted to abolish age of consent laws. MF started a petition for that in France.

The more the trial is publicized the less we will see of the actual evidence. That will be buried by the hours of bullshit, blather, and filler. Sad to see the spirit of Lance Ito at work still.

Just finished a viewing of Beavis and Butthead Do America. Not only does it hold up, it's prescient.

Released in 1996, the major subplot is that two nitwit teen-age boys unwittingly mule a biological weapon to Washington DC, and anyone that has interacted with them in any way is subjected to severe sexual abuse by the FBI.

Mike Judge is brilliant, it would be great to hear more from him in a Scott Adams kinda way.

As has been pointed out, the vaccines cannot be required as they are experimental and authorized for emergency use. Vaccinating the entire population is not emergency use.

Reread what you wrote. None of that that stuff is reality. If you or your son prefer possible death or long suffering from adverse effects on your family members from this dangerous virus, don't schedule the free vaccine. This jab is nothing more severe than swallowing a couple pain killers. If your head hurts, we don't care - but you should.

Did you object to having your son vaccinated for Chickenpox, Diphtheria, Tetanus, Whooping Cough, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Polio, Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B? We know the answer. Back in the good old days, everyone had a permanent scar on an upper arm caused by an ugly sore that developed after a doctor scratched your arm to administer a weakened small pox bacteria as a vaccine.

FAUCI: "Until they get vaccinated, children shouldn't be allowed to play together without masks -NYP"

Latest from Norway, where I now live: schools have been open since last June ,the students do not wear masks in the classrooms or in the schoolyard,I see them from across the street playing happily ,rain or shine. I am not saying we don't have restrictions, but Dr.Fauci saying children shouldn't play together without a mask, ticked me off.
Norway, Population 5.5 mill., Covid 19 deaths to date 656
Sweden Population 10.38 mill.Covid 19 deaths to date 13.402
Masks are not mandatory

It won't take long for some enterprising individual to create false vaccine credentials.

In Vermont, if I go to a bar to have a beer, I have to give them my name and phone number. On the way up, I bought a beer in New York State at a bar, and I had to buy a piece of chocolate cake, so I switched to bourbon, because, to be honest, I was sort of in the mood for a piece of chocolate cake. A Hasidic guy came in the bar for a beer, and when they told him he was required to buy a piece of cake, he left. Not that New York cares about the Hasidim.

Chocolate cake and beer? Bleh. That's all they offered? Nachos? Poutine?

That’s why I switched to bourbon.

Bourbon and club soda, actually. It went ok with the chocolate cake.

Gadfly, the vaccine is experimental and approved for emergency use.

Show mw and everyone else otherwise.

The history of mRNA and similar vaccines on animals is dismal. No, I'm not going to provide links. You'll get a better education looking it up yourself.

Oxford and Cambridge were for a thousand years finishing schools for the children of the aristocracy. They had no science courses and education peaked at Greek and Hebrew. The Scottish universities like Edinburgh taught Economics and Math and Chemistry and trained the competent physicians until modern times. I am frankly not that surprised at the antics of Oxford.

Doc K is right, and the modern research university system (which had its day) was the product of 19th C Germany, not Oxbridge.

Heinlein's human history only begins after cataclysmic wars in the early 21st C, IIRC.
