Much closer to charming.
TikTok guy played just as good as the original song, which I never cared much for. In fact, that's the first time that I've ever watched the Buggle's video from start to finish.
A couple of comments on the original song/video:
"I heard you on my wireless back in '52". This line grates on my mental vocabulary timeline... did people in '52 still refer to a radio as 'the wireless'? Ngram shows that the term peaked in 1921 and had dropped precipitously by '52; after all, the transistor radio was only a couple of years away by then. I'm a 50's gen guy, and I never heard my grandparents refer to the radio as 'the wireless'. And the actual radio set shown in the video is definitely of the ~1930's vintage. Artistic license I guess.
They go on to show a reel-to-reel tape deck as the cool new sound technology. Heh. It certainly was in 1980, but it's always funny nowadays to look back a relatively short time and see that what was once considered state-of-the-art is now obsolete.
The little girl really has the '80's vibe, doesn't she? The producer's kid? What is an '80's kid doing in '52?
Since the original video dates back to the inception of 'music videos' à la MTV, it's interesting to see both how primitive the production techniques were compared to today's, yet many of the basic elements used in today's videos were present back then. It's like the basic framework formula was laid out and fixed from the beginning, and subsequently only highly refined with newer production/editing technology.
The spirit of Chuck Barris lives on.

My father was a radio hobbyist from the '20s through the '80s.
He never said "wireless."

Definitely looks about 38 and probably still single. If you play your cards right it could mean a regular Friday night serenade for you down there on the farm!

I was in the 8th grade when that was a hit. The song, of course, is the very first video played on MTV, in August of 1981, as the DJs (who are the original VJs of MTV) on Sirius' Channel 8 always point out when this song plays on the satellite wireless.
I will stick with the original.
I always associate the song with another that was a hit at the exact same time.

Yeah, that's a point, and I get that - that's why I concluded with "artistic license" - he can do what he wants with the lyrics to give it a 'feel'. My comment was that it grates on my ear/brain, as do lots of modern lyrics, BTW. He could have easily said "I heard you on my wireless back in '42 (or even '32), and it would have rhymed/fit just as well and made more chronological sense. On the other hand, I think he was actually trying to relate the 'I' in the lyrics to himself personally (not a general "I"), and he's too young for '32-42'.
@catter: that's a good point between British and American english. Correct me if I'm wrong, but back in the 1920's -'40's, wasn't the term "wireless" also often used by Americans for "radio"? And when did the term "wireless" start to drop out of usage in Britain?
