Is it finally warm enough to go outside?

IMG_2393

I wonder. But inside there is conversation. You start...

BACK FROM A HIKE: The temperature got up to 24° and that felt really warm. By the end, I had my hat and mittens off and my jacket unzipped.

I think the weather will get a lot better in a few hours when my meetings are over.

Magically better.

I'm retiring soon. Instead of moving to a warmer state, I decided to move back to Minnesota, to a small town more than an hour from the Twin Cities. Closing tomorrow on a bungalow with a big garage near a lake. Being closer to my family won out over being far away in a place that has more pleasant weather.

We dodged the snow here in Oak Ridge last night and this morning, thankfully! We were supposed to get 3-5 inches. At around 1 a.m. we had about 1 inch of slush on the grassy areas and it was snowing very hard with gigantic snowflakes, but by this morning when I got up, it had all melted.

Texas Freeze Freak Out The people on line in Texas and other areas are just freaking out because of the unusually and SEVERELY DANGEROUS cold weather. Now. I don't blame them for being upset and afraid, because their electric and power grid sucks eggs and because they just are NOT used to this type of weather. It isn't normal. This type of weather is dangerous no matter where you live... and I really do feel bad for you with things that are out of your control like the weather...... BUT GET A GRIP. You should have had some, any, even a small amount of preparation. Grow up and be prepared.

HOWEVER.....I feel that the biggest issue is a rural/urban divide. The people who live in rural and less urban areas are already prepared for most emergencies. Have good stocks of food, water, tools, emergency supplies, firewood, alternate sources of heat and lighting..... and ESPECIALLY ..... rural people have an understanding of how things work. Things like where their water actually comes from. How to shut off the water during freezes. How to flush a toilet if you don't have running water. How to protect their cars, homes, water, pets etc etc etc. Practical knowledge . Simple skills.

While those who are trapped in the cities freak the fuck out. The people who live in the outlying areas and deal with the world are hurting, inconvenienced but still able to deal with it.

California has its own issues and power outages.....SO while we had a week of no electricity in our area...SEVERAL TIMES in a year.....we were ..."Meh. We've dealt with this before and we will get by." While the cities are "OMG we are all gonna die and race to get things they should already have on hand.

Then when the crisis over...they go back to business as usual. They never learn.

Some people are prepared and others are not. The Government is supposed to do the big things. Like plowing the roads and keeping the utilities in operation as best they can.

It isn't the Government's job to hold your hand and apprise you of the fact that shit can happen and that you should have some food and water in your house...among other things.

Greetings from deep in the heart of Texas. Right on, Dust Bunny Queen. This deep freeze, on top of Covid 2020, has sent me ruminating on the fragility of life, our risible confidence in “science” and “technology” to save us. It’s as though God were reaching down and forcibly turning our heads to notice Ash Wednesday, and pay heed to its exhortations. “Be reconciled to God. The kingdom of God is at hand. “
I am not usually given to such pronouncements. But empty grocery shelves only halfway through week one of a crisis will do that.

Snowing here in NYC. Looks like the wet slushy kind. I find gravity annoying enough, but, with the addition of heavy boots, gravity becomes really hideous. I'm sick of winter, and there's another month to go......They say that a difficult labor helps a mother bond to her newborn. Perhaps a difficult winter will add to the elation of spring when it finally arrives.....I've been told that those who hit their head against the wall long enough feel an enormous sense of relief when they stop. A very seasonable 26°, feels like 20°, here in southern Maine. Lots of people out and about, including the crew down the street putting a roof on a new house. We are expecting some snow today and overnight, total of about 2-3 inches. At these temps it should be the easily relocatable variety. Interesting to note that this winter other parts of New England have had a lot more snow than we have. I'm okay if that trend continues for the foreseeable future.

A couple lyric quotes to warm you up:

"Cryin' won't help you,
Prayin' won't do you no good"

Snowing again here in Sunny California (actually, this snow and freezing single digit temperatures are normal... and we have had a warmer and drier winter than usual.) Of course we are prepared 😁. If the power goes out, we have generators (yes more than one), propane, natural gas (yes both), fuel, freezer and pump house full of food, lighting supplies( candles, oil lamps and battery powered lights). And of course Scotch, wine and assorted other libations. Throw a roast in the oven, break out the scrabble board and we are ready!

Rush Limbaugh is going to be sorely missed. I don't think we can find a single, one person, replacement for him. Perhaps a group of several people.

Think of how this one particular person (Limbaugh) has influenced the world just by his thoughts and his voice. Pretty incredible. Most of us go lightly through life and might leave some footprints or legacies to be remembered. Rush has left some giant footprints. Big big shoes to fill.

In Houston here, waiting for the next and hopefully last freeze later tonight. It's easy for some to criticize but power grid issues aside, for residents it hasn't been a matter of just "preparing ahead of time". Our homes are designed and constructed for hot weather, to shed heat easily. We went from nearly 70F down to the teens within days. Our heaters are mostly electric-based, not oil etc like up north. I'm literally the only person I know in this region who didn't experience a power outage (some for days), only because I live next door to a designated warming shelter. Now that thaws are beginning, previously frozen pipes are bursting everywhere, causing water outages and boil notices. It's a subtropical region so we never have need for even the minor things like snow/ice equipment, nor do we have the life experience for it that's taken for granted elsewhere. Obviously if weather patterns are changing for the future then this need for winter preparedness will have to change as well. For perspective and comparison, try imagining a 50F+ temp differential on the hot side, or multiple tropical hurricanes, if they were to suddenly hit the northern regions unprepared for it. There's only so much you can prepare for (and maintain in the years it's not needed) and still have things be affordable.

Flat Tire said...

DBQ you are so right. I live on a ranch in northern Ca, been burned out (but no burned down)twice in the last few years. Probably averaged 2+ weeks a year with no power. With a well no power means no water. We also have a lot of livestock so we have to be prepared and can't leave. The same people who were horrified that we didn't evacuate like we were ordered to were the same ones who didn't have solar lanterns, a camp stove or even a gallon of extra water. I gave a couple of them a single burner butane stove and a gallon of water for Christmas. I taped the instructions to the top of the stove as a precaution. Geez, people! Keep enough stuff for yourself, your pets and a little to help your neighbors.

I pretty sure you're right about the asthma. The smoke is not about hot/cold, yet...he couldn't go outside (and there are places not nearly as susceptible to fires as where he is).

He also made snarky comments about Texas' power outage (understandable to some degree) but then piled on and said he was not experiencing any outages in his state, when he complained about the multiple outages last summer (vehemently complained about CA lack of planning and capacity). I like Scott but he does this from time to time. I just found it irritating when he did it yesterday. No biggie. It's not easy improvising for an hour a day for as long as he has done it. We live in a rural area of NEast Calif. Very agricultural, cattle, hay, wild rice. On the fringe of the High Desert areas. My husband's business is water wells, pumps, tanks, water systems. When we are out of power we (mostly) are out of water. This is why wehave more than one generator.

When pumps are down the priority of who gets first call on the work is 1. do you have livestock or animals that need water...then 2. Are you completely out of water. 3. Are you sick or feeble. LOLs (little ole ladies) get bumped up the priority list. Something not drastically wrong that has been going on for months, like low water pressure or waterlogged tank? You can wait a day or two. Also considered is--->Did you fix any of the issues that I told you about several years ago. Winterized your antiquated wind blown pump house so your pipes, tanks, pumps don't freeze? If not.....you are now last on the list for being a lazy dumb ass.

I realize that people in Texas and parts of the US that are normally not hit with this cold freezing weather have houses that aren't built for the cold. Just like people in Maine aren't prepared for Tuscon type summers. Weather can be abnormal. BUT...there is no excuse for not having some supplies, food, water etc for if/when the power goes out.

IT’S NOT WHAT YOU THINK: Fauci Used To Lurk Gay Bath Houses, Bars To Learn About AIDS Up Close

The revelation that gay men were visiting gay bath houses for the purpose of anonymous, often unprotected sex with other men provoked many cities and states to ban gay bath houses. Gay activists, both at the time and still today, considered this a civil rights violation.

Fauci was famously lambasted by conservatives in April of last year, when he recommended that sports, schools, businesses, and other necessities of life immediately cease operations to prevent the spread of COVID-19, but also gave his support to individuals using hookup apps like Tinder and its LGBT-exclusive counterpart Grindr to have casual sex.

Fauci said that having casual sex with a relative stranger posed a “relative risk” that individuals would have to determine if they would take.

Why do elected legislative branch members consider themselves our "leaders"? They're not leaders, they are representatives. It is not on them to set the direction or pace of march, it is on them to enable their citizens to set their own direction and pace.

Getting legislators to stop thinking they are "leading" and to get teachers to stop calling themselves "educators" would go a small step in the right direction for our nation.

I'm an engineer. So, as a hammer owner, most problems look to me like nails.

I can't see Texas's problems as political. They are engineering problems with understandable geneses. Here's the bottom line: It isn't rational or cost effective to be 100% prepared for a 100-year event. Try to be 80% prepared, maybe, but that last 20% will cost you four times as much and may never be needed.

Would homes in Austin be more comfortable today if they were weatherproofed and insulated like homes in International Falls? Sure, but you'd have to be a lunatic to spend that kind of money. The same goes for Texas's grid. Those windmills might still be working if they had been designed for Spitsbergen instead of Abilene, but any engineer who advocated that level of preparedness should lose his job, and with good reason.

That said, this little cold snap has pretty clearly demonstrated the fallacy of reliance on renewables for providing a consistent, reliable level of energy production. As you can see by these graphs over at Powerlineblog, as temperatures fall, wind power takes up less and less of the energy burden. Whether it is because wind drops during cold spells or windmills cease to function, it's real. It's not Democrat or Republican, it's the way it is. No amount of vacuous brain vomit from AOC will change that.

"With school canceled for the week, our girls asked to take a trip with friends. Wanting to be a good dad, I flew down with them last night and am flying back this afternoon," Cruz said in a statement."

Here you go:

And he uses his rationale for the things he does based on that.”

“I point out to him no American president can be sustained as a president, if he doesn’t reflect the values of the United States,” the US president continued. “And so the idea that I am not going to speak out against what he’s doing in Hong Kong, what he’s doing with the Uighurs in western mountains of China and Taiwan — trying to end the one China policy by making it forceful … [Xi] gets it.”

“Culturally there are different norms that each country and their leaders are expected to follow,” he continued.

THIS. I was arguing this exact point with an innumerate friend the other day. She was insisting that because there are wind turbines in Greenland and Antarctica, the failure of Texan wind turbines was bad planning. I pointed out that Greenland has 56,000 people in it - meaning, when you're planning for that few people, those particular people (people who are accustomed to living in harsh conditions and being prepared for power failures), and that climate, your engineering decisions will necessarily be different from planning for Texas. She replied, "What does population have to do with it?" Innumerate, as I said.

Here in the western suburbs of Houston, our power is no longer going in and out; we still have water though many neighbors don't (we're providing showers and tap water, though we are under a boil order - fortunately as home brewers we have many tens of gallons of water storage equipment, all filled while the water supply was still considered safe); roads are mostly bare and dry for now; my family was prepared and can now offer some support to others.

But we've lived in northern CA, Seattle, and PA for long periods, so we don't completely have southeast Texas DNA (reflexively prepared for hurricanes, unprepared for winter to turn ugly). And meanwhile, many of my neighbors are expats from all over the world, with varying degrees of experience with harsh winters. Most are coping, with a little help from their friends.
