Trump says he won't attend the inauguration.

Just before that tweet, there was this: And last night, this zombiesque performance: AND: Here's the transcript for that zombiesque performance. I saw some people calling this his "concession," but I listened and heard no concession:
We have just been through an intense election and emotions are high, but now tempers must be cooled and calm restored. We must get on with the business of America. My campaign vigorously pursued every legal avenue to contest the election results. My only goal was to ensure the integrity of the vote.... Now Congress has certified the results. A new administration will be inaugurated on January 20th. My focus now turns to ensuring a smooth, orderly and seamless transition of power. This moment calls for healing and reconciliation.... We must revitalize the sacred bonds of love and loyalty that bind us together as one national family....

He's saying the process for challenging the result has concluded and he will not challenge it anymore. It's not that Biden really won, but that the process is really over. What exactly is "concession"? It's not a technical term. Nothing depends on it. It's a nicety. We want a particular locution... but why? Is it like saying "uncle"

From the Wikipedia article "Concession (politics)":

In modern U.S. elections (presidential or otherwise), a concession is usually a two-step process: first, the losing candidate makes a concession phone call to the winning candidate and congratulates them personally. Second, the losing candidate makes a televised public speech, known as a concession speech, to their supporters, on an (improvised) podium surrounded by the candidate for the vice presidency, their spouses or other important relatives and friends. The concession speech consists of four elements:
1. The statement of defeat: an admission that the candidate has lost the election to their opponent, who is congratulated on their victory.
2. The call to unite: an expression of support for the victor's upcoming term in office, and a call for unity under their leadership, necessary after an often divisive and polarizing election campaign.
3. The celebration of democracy: a reflection on why democracy and the participation of millions of voters in the electoral process is important, and that their choice should be respected.
4. The vow to continue the fight: a reminder of the importance of the issues the candidate has raised during the campaign, and the policies their party advocates for. The candidate says that these remain important goals to strive toward, promises to continue fighting for them, and urges their supporters to do the same...

Trump's speech does not have the most important element: The congratulation of the opponent! He never mentions Biden. He does not concede that Biden won, only that the process was conclusive.

Elements 2 and 4 are there, but the 3rd element is reversed. He doesn't say that people voted and he must bow to the people's choice. He's keeping alive the belief that the result that has been certified is not what the qualified voters actually voted for. In his rhetoric, democracy does not prevail. The idea that supersedes democracy is order — smooth, seamless orderliness.

BUT: Element 2 is incomplete. He wants the people to unite, but just in general. He doesn't say unite behind our new leader!

At this point I don't believe that Trump attending the inauguration would be any kind of pathway to reconciliation. If he actually attended he would probably be a distraction that wouldn't mollify either his supporters of his detractors, just inflame them. I think Trump needs to be out of the headlines for several months. I doubt that will happen since the left and the media need Trump to be in our thoughts for every and always,

I see Twitter has decided to let Trump tweet again. I have asserted all along that if Trump has some epic thundering evidence that will unravel the entire Democrat coup, it would actively be wise to *not* release it prematurely, to get all of the coup plotters to reveal themselves. I was getting quite frustrated once Cotton revealed himself, thinking, there can't possibly be anyone else... but given Pence, I was wrong. Whatever comes next, getting Pence to expose himself was also certainly critical.

And it very strongly seems to me that the Democrats, in their current rush to not even wait 13 days to get him out, in their current insane rush to get him out NOW, IMPEACH!, I think it's obvious that *they* think he very well might have a nuclear bomb of evidence of criminality in his hand to still play, and are trying to get him out before he can play it.

Note, also, that Nancy Pelosi's email account was just sitting, right there, unlocked, on her computer during the riot. If there were any military on Trump's side seeded in the Capitol protests... if the entire point was to go in and capture some information from Congressional computers... yeah.

It's hard to keep up hope in the face of the complete infiltration of every institution, but there are signs this may not be over yet. To take down a conspiracy this vast, full transparency of who is in on the coup is the only way it could work, and that hasn't been achieved until now (After Pence, I seriously don't know who else *could* still be exposed, beyond the 6 or 7 Senators who objected).

As to how Trump could get the word out of whatever it is he has to everyone despite the social media and MSM lockdowns... remember a couple years ago, that Presidential Emergency Broadcast that went to literally every single cell phone in the country? Yeah.

Qwinn म्हणाले...

"If Trump had some epic thundering evidence, he should have released it long ago."

While it is frustrating and the level of patience required here is maddening, ultimately I have to disagree. The only way a coup this vast could be brought down would be to incriminate everyone involved simultaneously, otherwise those not exposed would just run cover for each other. And more have been exposed in the last 48 hours then I think even the most paranoid among us could have expected.

Somewhat off topic, but I'm trying to think ahead. I think the Republicans are likely to lose ground in the 2020 elections. Why? Because so many incumbents have hopped in their carriages and fled the battle ground. No one will have confidence in them. So we are looking at a long grind. The only bright spot is that the Democrats will overreach and make mistakes, but that depends on there being enough resistance to keep them from succeeding. And I am not sure there is. The pleasures afforded tyrants are many.

Trump should make his post presidency about election reform.

Many many Americans believe the election was stolen and the current system makes it impossible to prove otherwise in the short interval between the vote and the certification. That's a big problem. And it's a solvable problem if there is a will to solve it.

It's a big problem if Trump can say, "I won. Prove me wrong" and no one can do it.
Likewise, if Trump had won, Wednesday's Capitol incursion would be as nothing compared to the riots that would be going on in every major city. Dems would be saying Biden won and no one could prove them wrong either.

A sincere, very public, bi-partisan effort for election reform, is one path for the nation to come back from the brink. Maybe the only path. It could also be a constructive path for former President Trump.

I wouldn't want Trump to attend the inauguration of Biden. Trump has been an authentic person, whether you like him or not. Many people found him offensive, I found him entertaining. More importantly, Trump got a lot of things done which our traditional politicians promised to do and never did, and never will do.

What happened in certain swing states with the insane level of election cheating is inexcusable and I wouldn't want Trump to dignify that by acting as if Biden won fairly.

Biden will be the next president, Trump admitted it, and I accept it fully as well. Our system is allowing it. You don't have to like the President. You don't even have to vote.

I'm eagerly awaiting the political pundits to dissect the election and explain Biden's masterful strategy for victory. How did Biden manage to barely campaign, to lose Ohio, Florida, the bellwether counties, win less counties than any other president, but somehow managed to win?

daskol म्हणाले...

Readering, there is a big difference between getting out the vote and manufacturing the vote. The allegations re mail-in ballot abuse, sprinkled with debunking powder but not otherwise actually refuted or debunked, are that various changes to election procedures would make it very difficult to secure the election. Lots of people pointed out that these mechanisms would be abused to allow for fraudulent ballots to enter the system alongside legitimate votes--this has historically been a bipartisan perspective, common sense. Trump and many others pointed out that the facilitation of fraud on a wide scale was the reason behind these changes. AG Barr said the Dems were playing with fire.

If you continue to act like the big event in election 2020 was the Dems had a superior get out the vote machine, better "ground game," you're not disputing what the other side is saying, just ignoring it. Common sense: in a high stakes game wherein the rules allow for cheating, and the timeframe allows for the implementation of cheating on a massive and organized scale, would you expect people to cheat? If you don't expect that outcome, you don't understand people. If you do expect that outcome, then you understand what tens of millions of people are upset about. It's not that complicated.

Back in 1984, Walter Cronkite did some kind of TV special about George Orwell's novel 1984 coming true and got flak from the right for ignoring communist dictatorships and just talking about corporate censorship. Now the Soviet Union is gone and corporate censorship has grown to truly massive dimensions. It would identify politicians of both parties worth supporting and support the bejabbers out of them. It would mock and disparage others relentlessly.

Ditto tech companies and advertisers on abc/nbc/cbs/fox et al suggesting we should not support them.

Ideally it should operate at a very slight profit to avoid irs problems.

If is helpful, it could even identify as a "press" organization and raise 1A protection claims.

In other words an organization that functions like a political party with none of the restrictions.

Still, no one need wonder why Twitter would take the action. To be fair, Trump, at his inauguration, excoriated the former Presidents who led us into the mess that Trump tried to fix. Trump was right, those former Presidents deserved the wrath, but... Fair is fair. I think Trump should bear the heat. Humility is a difficult lesson to learn, but a man is stronger if he learns that lesson.

I want Donald J to attend the inauguration. Let us show up at the Inauguration in the millions to support him.

Rosalyn C (1:30 pm) is spot on in saying she "wouldn't want Trump to attend the inauguration of Biden. Trump has been an authentic person, whether you like him or not…… Trump got a lot of things done which our traditional politicians promised to do and never did, and never will do.” She goes on to imply that DJT has good reason to question the legitimacy of the election results; I agree. The more the Democrats and their reliable propagandists in the media railed against inquiries into voting irregularities, the guiltier they appeared.

I think the leftists might just be in the process of doing two related and spectacularly stupid things: (1) Further stirring up the Trump supporters to an even HIGHER level of animosity; and (2) nudging and elevating Trump ever closer to martyrdom. In the process, of course, as some (old Joe included) say things about “uniting” Americans, the word “hypocrite’ shines brightly in neon red letters on their foreheads.

We known that DJT thrives on attention (of ANY kind), loves conflict, relishes being in eveyones’ psyche. Democrats would be wise to let him go on his way. But they won’t. TDS is apparently a permanent disability. and untreatable

Trump is at a point of weakness that he has never experienced, but...he is not done yet.

Go to whitehouse.gov and say this: Stay strong Donald J.

He needs to hear that right about now.

Biden spent the whole campaign calling Trump and his supporters Nazis. Why go? Droopy "Unity" Joe's speechwriters have turned up the rhetoric temperature a lot the last couple of days. Social Media and Mainstream Media are censoring First Amendment rights. Why go to the coronation of the leftist nation after that?

Trying to picture going to my Dr and pointing to my TDS and asking for treatment.

To Readering: About your physician and treatment of DTS, there is a standard of care for this. It begins with diagnosis, but you have already identified you're stricken so we can assume you are infected and afflicted. Next, the evaluating doctor should probe for causation. You should be asked to list your sources for political and public policy communication, with estimates about your degree of exposure to each. This will lead to the subtype of TDS, of which there are many (DLemonentia, Upchuck Toddy, Maddow Madness, Cuomo Comatosity, WaPo Poops, and in the most severe cases they tend to be overlapping and symbiotic). Depending on the extent and duration of the infection, you may bedesignated as “ALC”, which means "abject lost cause”. Good Luck.
