"If you read his speech and listen to it carefully, much of it is thinly-veiled innuendo calling us white supremacists, calling us racists, calling us every name in the book, calling us people who don't tell the truth."

Said Rand Paul on Fox News last night, quoted in "Power Up: Unity in Washington will be harder than Biden makes it sound" (WaPo)("Some Republicans such as Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) even trashed Biden's speech itself, which was widely-lauded for its appeals for Americans to set aside their political differences and work together for a better country").

If I had a little more time at the moment, I'd go through the speech line by line and look for every phrase that can be interpreted as saying that Rand Paul and whoever he thinks of as "us" are white supremacists, racists, liars, or whatever other names might be in that book.

ADDED: Here's Rand Paul's Fox News segment with the "thinly-veiled innuendo" charge:

Paul cites a particular line in the speech: "And we must reject the culture in which facts themselves are manipulated and even manufactured." According to Paul, the "gist" of what Biden was saying there is that his political opponents manufacture and manipulate the truth.

AND: Without yet going through the comments to see your suggestions, I have read the speech to look for what can be characterized as the "thinly-veiled innuendo" Paul was talking about. Here's what I found:
And now arise a political extremism, white supremacy, domestic terrorism that we must confront and we will defeat.

Literally, Biden is not calling anyone a white supremacist, a racist,  a domestic terrorist, or a political extremist. He identifies the quality — extremism, supremacy, terrorism — and vows to fight the abstractions, not the actual people. These things don't exist without people, and yet, it's clever, because who wants to say That's me? Rand Paul's "us" can't say That's about us unless they cop to being racists, white supremacists, or domestic terrorists.

Uniting to fight the foes we face: anger, resentment and hatred, extremism, lawlessness, violence, disease, joblessness, and hopelessness.

I note the use of the word "fight," the word that Trump was denounced for using in his January 6th speech. Trump stands accused of — impeached for — inciting an insurrection for saying, "We fight like Hell and if you don’t fight like Hell, you’re not going to have a country anymore."

But Biden says "fight" — "fight the foes." And yet his "foes" are not human beings. His foes are abstractions: "anger, resentment and hatred, extremism, lawlessness, violence, disease, joblessness, and hopelessness."

Is he really referring to people? You can't have any of those things without people, and some of those things come from within people and characterize those people as The Other, most notably the first 4 things on that list: anger, resentment, hatred, extremism. And yet Biden did not say the angry, resentful people are foes. He takes a hate-the-sin-love-the-sinner position.

But there's no expression of love for these angry, resentful people. And I don't get the sense that he means to say all anger is wrong and needs to be stamped out. He expressed support for the racial justice movement, and it certainly involves a great deal of expression of anger —  anger, resentment, hatred, extremism. Those angry people are respected in their anger. Their anger is justified. So anger per se is not the foe.

We can deliver racial justice and we can make America once again, the leading force for good in the world.

He almost said "Make America great again."

I know speaking of unity can sound to some like a foolish fantasy these days. I know the forces that divide us are deep and they are real. But I also know they are not new. Our history has been a constant struggle between the American ideal, that we all are created equal, and the harsh ugly reality that racism, nativism, fear, demonization have long torn us apart.

Again, the literal attack is on the abstraction: "racism, nativism, fear, demonization." But these are things that only exist within human beings. So it is a thinly-veiled attack on racists, nativists, fear-mongers, and demonizers. And, again, who wants to say That sounds like you're talking about me

Well, Rand Paul does. It's hard to admit, but Biden will get away with demonizing his opponents if no one admits it. Obviously, a small set of Americans will openly take on the label of "racist" or "nativist," but Paul isn't talking about them. He's saying, I believe, that Biden is stoking hostility that is aimed at the millions of Americans who agreed with the Trump policies that Trump's opponents have denounced as racist.

Let’s begin to listen to one another again, hear one another, see one another, show respect to one another. Politics doesn’t have to be a raging fire, destroying everything in its path. Every disagreement doesn’t have to be a cause for total war. And we must reject the culture in which facts themselves are manipulated and even manufactured.

I included that because Paul himself cited that line. I observe that Trump himself continually denounced "the culture in which facts themselves are manipulated and even manufactured." But Trump didn't pontificate about unity at the same time. Trump forthrightly attacked his foes.

It's important to acknowledge that Biden doesn't demand that his opponents shut up entirely:

To all those who did not support us, let me say this. Hear me out as we move forward. Take a measure of me and my heart. If you still disagree, so be it....

You can keep fighting, but fight within a system of good order:

That’s America, the right to dissent peaceably within the guard rails of our Republic is perhaps this nation’s greatest strength. Yet hear me clearly, disagreement must not lead to disunion....

 No insurrection, please.

[T]he answer is not to turn inward, to retreat into competing factions, distrusting those who don’t look like you or worship the way you do, or don’t get their news from the same sources you do. We must end this uncivil war that pits red against blue, rural versus urban, conservative versus liberal…

I need to give this my tag "civility bullshit," because I think that means now that my side has the power, let's be nice. Your side did not play nice when it was out of power. Did you ever tell your people to stand down when it was not in your political interest?

***

And let me quote one more thing, because I want to quote an annotation that appears in The Washington Post's copy of the speech transcript. From the speech:

There is truth, and there are lies — lies told for power and for profit, and each of us has a duty and a responsibility as citizens, as Americans, and especially as leaders, leaders who have pledged to honor our Constitution and protect our nation to defend the truth and defeat the lies.

The WaPo annotation:

This is one of the prominent features of Biden's speech: While calling for unity, an acknowledgment that some of his opponents aren't on the level and that their influence must be dealt with. Biden didn't use his speech to call out individuals who purveyed the theory that his win wasn't legitimate, but he seems to recognize that, without addressing the proliferation of falsehoods, his agenda will be difficult to enact. For a man who emphasizes conciliation, it was certainly a notable choice.

So that’s a hard no. You can’t show that PA election judges are not just as corrupt as the DoJ and FBI have shown they are. This is on topic because speaking the truth can never be called incitement in a free society and therefore truth is a defense against the charge.

Truth may be inflammatory, and it is a lot of the time, but speaking the truth can never be defined as incitement, and therefore these issues have to be expored honestly and fairly in a court of law. Which they never will be, BTW.

These days it seems like there's fewer "team sport" political animals. These are people who think of politics the same way as they would their favorite sports team. To them, when their team wins it's time to gloat and rub it in the faces of the fans of the other team. Maybe next time the other team will win, but for right now things are good.

The main issue with this sort of person is that at times they don't seem capable of connecting politics with reality. They don't seem to be able to fully understand or care about what the consequences of what their team winning really means. To them, it's just blue versus red, good guys verus bad guys, my team versus your team. It's just a game. It's not really real. Any negative consequences won't touch me.

There was a time in this country when there were loads of team sports policitcal animals. But these days politics seem so much more serious and dire you don't see as many of them any more.

If we reduce economics or politics to just a few permissible terms, this will help to clarify thinking. " Fair share", "white supremacy", "global warming". If all the complexity of life is subsumed under a few headings like this, many of the conflicts that so divide our country can be eliminated. We have a lot of words, but there's no need to have so many thoughts. Perhaps more use of emojis would help.

The Democrats are fond of saying that various things Trump said were "dog whistles" for racism, homophobia yada yada yad. You pick the progressive pejorative phrase and complete the sentence.

It's also said that if you hear the dog whistle, you're the dog. Rand Paul heard the whistle. Biden is going to attack various "foes". And if you've listened to the Democrats (and don't agree with them) you have already been labelled a racist, a white supremacist, and an insurrectionist engaged in sedition. Biden has heard those terms used to characterize the Deplorables and he's going to wipe out the Deplorables. Or at the very least "reprogram them" or send them to "reeducation camps" as his fellow Dims have suggested.

It's going to be a long four years.

So why are you assuming Biden meant you, the average Trump supporter? Maybe he really meant what he said, that Nazis are opponents.

Because there are "opponents", and there are "enemies".

One key thing I noticed about President Obama, was that he reversed the practice of every decent American:

He had not foreign "enemies", they were all just "opponents."

Americans? WE were his "enemies".

If your "opponents" are "Nazis", it's because you don't accept that anyone is ever allowed to oppose you.

And if you talk about "Nazis" or "white supremacists" in America being a real factor, it's because you are either an ignoramus, or a lying sack of garbage. Your opponents are ordinary decent Americans who want a decent life, and understand that the Democrat Party proposals will make them worse off. Not because we've done anything wrong, but because the Democrats require a hate target, and we are it.

You want to "reach across the aisle" to us?

Drop the hate

Drop the racism

Stop demanding that we agree with you

Stop demanding that we stop stating our beliefs in public

But you can't, because if you did the above, you'd lose 90% of your policy proposals

RV pops up, confirming the bosses have sent out the new talking points. The FBI declares White supremacy as the nations largest threat.

This is my take from earlier this morning, before the 200 comment break.

"Biden has read the FBI report stating the greatest threat to America come from domestic terrorist such as neo Nazi groups, Proud Boys etc;"

The exact same FBI, so politicized it fabricated from nothingness a counter intelligence investigation against President Trump, his campaign and the Trump transition team for conspiring with Russia.
We know FBI Special Agent Joe Pientka was ordered to stand down in his defined job description of vetting the accuracy of the Steele dossier. He was reassigned to get him out of the way. We have known this since 2018 from Senate hearings, that were immediately, classified and sealed, with the approval of Republicans.
Just a coincidence that all investigations into Senator Burr's insider stock trading has
been recently cancelled by the DoJ, Tues, Jan 19,2020. Just a coincidence.

Appeals to authority, require, you know, an actual authority.

In short, the FBI is a corrupt leftist political driven organization.

What we have here is talking points handed out a posted as required in a lame attempt to provide a claim that lacks any evidence.
What I keep hearing is the deafening silence about the Jan 6th protests. No Name yet on the officer that shot and killed a protester that was not a threat. No breakdown as to the planners and perpetrators of violence. We have the event to prove the accusations of the FBI, but all we get is silence. If leaks start to trickle out laying blame on the whole white supremacist conspiracy, we will know it is all manufactured.

It's fairly easy to determine when someone comments in bad faith. Assume they are speaking the truth and compare the underlying principles asserted to their stated positions in other circumstances.

For example if Inga believed this wouldn't she criticize Joe Biden for claiming Republicans want to return black Americans to slavery? But instead she defends Biden because her sole revealed interest is advancing Team Blue. No principles, fact, or even reality is relevant to this goal.

The end result is the powerful get a pass while randos are held to whatever standard is necessary to judge them using whatever fantasies are necessary to ensure they fail. This is the core nature of the left.

[“For example if Inga believed this wouldn't she criticize Joe Biden for claiming Republicans want to return black Americans to slavery?”]

One would have to believe that is what Biden meant in the speech Matt Sablan was referring to in order to criticize it.

First note this defense exactly contradicts her previous defense that she was referring to the inauguration speech. Now she has a different justification, and when this one fails there will be another. Such is the nature of unprincipled people. The conclusion never changes, only the justification.

Second note the issue is not whether Biden believes Republicans want to return black Americans to slavery (although by Inga's asserted standards this would make him hysterical and extreme). It's that he is now posing as someone against hateful rhetoric and political war. But this quote (and others) show he embraces the tactic. Inga's defense of him shows she does as well. This has always been obvious since there's never been leftist generated hate-the-right movement she didn't enthusiastically participate in from They're All Racist to They're Creating The HandMaid's Tale to Trump is a Putin Spy. She's all-in on every one which makes her efforts to claim others are extreme a farce.

But most importantly importantly here is Biden's exact quote speaking of Republicans to an NAACP audience:

"They want to put ya'll back in chains".

I'll just copy the conclusion from above.

"The end result is the powerful get a pass while randos are held to whatever standard is necessary to judge them using whatever fantasies are necessary to ensure they fail. This is the core nature of the left."

To expand the first element leftists are always granted whatever presumption is necessary to exonerate them from their words. In the cultist mind no ally is ever guilty. They always meant something else no matter how implausible.

Again there's an easy method to test whether the generosity she grants leftists is genuine or simply a partisan driven defense. She claims not to believe what people say, but rather insists there can be other meanings than their clear words. Does she apply this standard to people other than Team Blue?

Of course not! Rather than granting them this leeway away from their clear meaning she routinely insists their words include implausible additional meanings to make them seem more extreme.

Scott Alexander's internet-famous essay on the In-Group vs the Out-Group explains how people fall into this trap, although it includes a presumption it is working subconsciously which cannot possibly apply when the standards and resulting contrasts are as ridiculously extreme as Ingas. But it's something well intentioned people generally should be aware of.

The biggest internal threat we face are radical anarchists in the Antifa movement (and the ones who are co-opting the BLM movement). Who was burning cities, assaulting police and civilians, rioting, etc.?

Biden's speech, as others have pointed out, shows that he and the Democrats blame their politcal opponents for all that is wrong with the country and the world. The unity he calls for is the unity of submission. As dumb as Joe is, even he is not that dumb... this is all pretext for the hammer that is coming.

The right-wing crazies all follow Qanon conspiracies and are mostly middle-class people employed by small businesses. The left-wing crazies all believe in the Russia collusion hoax, think that what happened on Jan 6 was an act of insurrection, have secure jobs in Congress, the Senate, the White House, or the FBI or other government agencies. The Qanon people only threaten themselves, the Democrats threaten the integrity and stability of the nation. I know who I'm more afraid of.

Ann, that you don't recognize the naked threat of Biden's speech and what it portends is concerning. We wonder how the German people could have sat by and seen the Weimar Republic turn into a National Socialist dictatorship... and we are seeing the same thing happen today, using the crisis of COVID and 'insurrection' as the justification for what is coming. I see it as a dark time for America, and I hope I'm wrong but I'm afraid I'm not.
