Ive been here in Flatlandia since Saturday a week ago. Weather has been chilly but not terrible. Mostly in the 30s. (Anything under 70 is chilly for me)

This afternoon it started snowing. My wife, my kids and especially my 4 grandkids are thrilled to death. "Send more pictures! Take a video!" they tell me. Yeah right. Like I am going to go outside in that stuff. So nasty that even Heaven doesn't want it.

I did do a small snowman. Two youngest grandkids almost 5&3 were tickled pink.

Roads coming back to the house I rented were slicker than snot on a doorknob. I was driving 20 miles an hour, practicing social distancing and still almost hit someone in a roundybout.

3 more days and I'm headed south.

Speaking of not realizing that he will never be president, what's up with Kamala Harris? She has not resigned her Senate seat yet. Does she plan to do so? If so, when?

Or even not. I read the other day there is no legal requirement that a VP, who is constitutionally a member of the Senate not also be a sitting senator.

The question this article posed is how many votes would she have. She would have the one as Senator but would she also be a tie breaker as Senate President?

We've had had a couple of instances where a sitting senator ran for VP and re-election as senator in the same election. LBJ won election as VP AND re-election as senator but resigned as senator. When he tried to exercise his prerogatives as Senate President, JFK Demmies put the kibosh on him. Since LBJ really, really, really, really wanted to be someday, they had leverage. He could have told them to just piss up a rope.

Bentson lost the vice-presidency but won his Senate seat.

The irrelevance of the 'state' concept in Afghanistan; of course there's a formal state for which factions contest control, but the joke about the President being in reality the Mayor of Kabul is not new. The tribes and factions are more powerful than the state in almost everything that matters, as far as I can see, and are happy to let puppets and posturers play politics.

On the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq being different from our entry into WWII, sure, but it hardly alters the point that neither country had much history of even formal democracy or rechtstaat potential. Not that ideological ignoramuses like Li'l Bush and Cheney would know or care.

Finally, books. For understanding WWII, Andrew Roberts's "Masters and Commanders" about the Combined Chiefs of Staff. It was a revelation to me about the workings of a completely unprecedented organization without which the war could not have been fought to victory.

On CSpan I watched Rhodes College Professor Tait Keller's presentation to the National WWI Museum (need to go) about his edited volume "Environmental Histories of WW I" (or the like). Very tantalizing samples of economic and environmental issues and challenges on and beyond the battlefronts. On my list.

I tested the signature match for absentee ballots in Georgia and it failed. I'm tired of the deniers saying there is "no evidence" sig match doesn't work. Here is your evidence. Is it any surprise only 2,011 signatures were rejected out of 1,322,529 in November? We must fix this.

The boy stood on the burning deck. People get too worked up over politics. The power centers in America are diffuse and many. I don't think Biden will be a particularly successful President, but neither was Obama and life went on. Beyonce got to sing in the White House and will do so again. Surely that counts for something and will help to heal America's wounds.....I don't know for certain whether vote fraud changed the outcome of the election, but it's glaringly obvious that the tilt of the media had a huge impact. I don't think a Mayor can properly manage a city without the support of the police department. In like way, I don't think a President lead the country without, at least, some semblance of objectivity, if not support, on the part of the media. Trump lost because of them....I don't know if the media are long term winners, but they won this hand.

Last Friday, someone threw rocks at her residence and broke a window. She called the police. For a crime that will no longer be a crime if she has her way.

What sort of "shift in learning models" do they imagine? Perhaps the evidence of the rate at which children contract and transmit the virus can help us devise a plan?

Finally, we are set to get some snow overnight tonight, 6-9 inches with gale force winds. Mrs. stevew is hightailing it to daughter's house. I'm hoping we don't lose power, this place is chilly with the heat on. Currently 15 degrees F outside, snow won't arrive until later this afternoon.
