"May we riot now?"

Untitled

That's a photo I took in the Wisconsin State Capitol building in September 2011. I ran across it by chance as I was looking through old photographs. I thought it deserved another look here in 2020.

The context is explained in this old post (which has video of the scene). It was some time after the peak anti-Scott Walker protests, but singing and dancing continued in the rotunda. At the time, I determined that WNPJ was the Wisconsin Network for Peace and Justice. But what were "The Raanistas"? I'm seeing Red & Anarchist Action Network. Here's an item from 3 months ago at the r/Anarchism subreddit, "Any RAANistas still around?" There's only one answer:
I was (kind of) a RAANista back around 2009-2010, just before it all kinda folded. I was still relatively new to anarchism around that time and isolated from other anarchists, so the extent of my involvement was pretty much posting on the forums lol. [There's] a thread here ... a few years back talking about RAAN....

I'm giving this my "solitude" tag — because of the idea of an anarchist feeling "isolated from other anarchists." Everybody's looking for love. Notice the hearts on the banner... And then "it all kinda folded."

At least they asked nicely.

Who grows up thinking 'Yeah, it'd be great to destroy everything around me.'? We seem to have an entire generation- the most well-fed, most degreed generation in history- ready to destroy their own world before they take it over.

I suppose that will relieve them of having to make something of it.

It looks like a cool anarchist collage there in the background. Somebody dropped some cash at Hobby Lobby...

May we riot. This is the first election in my memory where a party ( democrats) have used the stoking of fear of personal violence to induce people to vote for them. Murder rates in blue cities are the highest in 20 years. Cities have been broken and looted. The Democrats tell people, watch out who you vote for or you might get hurt. That is the message I am hearing. What a disgusting uncivilized party the Democrats are, truly evil. They don’t deserve anything but contempt. The upper party elites don’t even bother making serious denial that occupy, antifa and BLM are their tools.

To begin: I am an anarchist. I might also be Antifa, but that is an Idea, and sometimes I like the Idea, and sometimes it's better left nebulous, depending on who you are talking to...

And I won't lie: it feels good to be a part of something bigger than myself, something better. I'm a little iffy on some of the more extreme stuff, really, but setting things on fire can be a real bonding experience: it's us against the police and the fascists. And the capitalists and the racists -- all that stuff that is usually on the flyers. Frankly, I'd be more comfortable with just working on the flyers -- I'm pretty good with Photoshop -- but they're pretty picky about them...

I also have to admit: I was kinda lonely before all this got started. I was taking some classes at the community college, but it's hard to make friends there; it's always been hard for me to make friends, actually, so I usually just spent a lot of time watching Netflix and playing video games...

There are a lot of girls in our group, too, which I like, but I haven't had any luck with any of them yet: they seem to like the more aggressive guys, if they're cis, and they usually only talk to me when they have questions about their iPhones -- I'm pretty good with tech...

I'm not sure where this will all go: I can't picture protesting much in winter -- it gets cold and wet here, so I'm assuming we might take a break for a few months. That's okay, though: I'm still getting unemployment checks, so I'll be good for awhile. Hell, I'll probably binge-watch Game of Thrones again -- everything except the last season: the last season sucked...

I am Laslo.

They are going to get rolled so hard by their competent peers when it's that generation's turn for power. You don't hear much about them, but there's a lot of clear-eyed achievers in that generation. The losers are trying to get a leg-up with their tantrums but, once their parents are gone, they'll be so much schmeg in the unwashed dustbin of history.

serious question
Why aren't these terrorists in Jail?

Darwin's law as applied to anarchist groups. No self-respecting anarchist asks permission. That's not doing it right.

The Far Left is always looking for some "Popular Front" kind of movement between the Commies & the Anarchists. They never last, mostly because the Commies always try & impose some sort of top-down structure on the anarchists who basically then behave, well, like anarchists.

There are major ideological differences, too, but it's operationally where the head-butting begins.

Nothing says Justice and Peace like a good old-fashioned riot!

Here's hoping every Antifa rioter gets what they deserve in life, good and hard.

Since they’re anarchists I assume they stole that sheet from some poor person’s laundry line.

So, did the RAANistas join Antifa? Isn't the very concept of an organization of anarchists oxymoronic? Perhaps even anarchists have found thare is value in organization and rules/processes and hierarchies... I mean, who's going to coordinate the direct action responses, identify points of outrage, decide which businesses to target and which to leave alone? Who decides which press/media reps need to be protected at riots, and which need to be assaulted and driven away?

It's tough leading a movement that opposes leadership.
