"Some say, 'It’s a great opportunity for my kids to learn compassion.' I’m a pretty compassionate person, but..."

"... at least show some respect. [The Department of Homeless Services] is just putting 283 people into a neighborhood basically in the middle of the night?... It’s this slow slide... How can families stay here? Does the city want families to stay?"

Said a woman quoted in "NYC moms fleeing Upper West Side amid crime and chaos" (NY Post).
The Lucerne, on 79th Street and Amsterdam, and Hotel Belleclaire, on 76th Street and Broadway, were recently converted into homeless shelters, with nearly 300 vagrants between them. Ten of the men are registered sex offenders, including convicted rapists, child molesters and child-porn possessors — all living a block away from a school playground.

IF you just dump the people in the area without quality services then a bad outcome will occur.

Portland tried this years ago. And the housing was stripped bare to sell stuff for drugs.

Homeless people in this situation need 1 on 1 life coaching for several years to escape and substitute new thinking.

The only real advantage is that maybe people would smile at each other more once past the boundaries. But we are not that type of society.

Here's a better way to teach compassion. We happen to live in a very nice neighborhood in a fairly affluent part of the state.

We didn't want our kids growing up in this bubble without knowing that living here was an earned privilege, and that there was a different world outside of what they thought was 'normal.'

So when they were 12 or so we trundled them off to the nearest big city and into the worst neighborhood (still a shithole to this day) to prepare and serve food at a soup kitchen run by a local religious organization. They got the point.

But that doesn't mean that I want those junkies in my neighborhood using my sidewalk for a restroom.

This is how you teach compassion along with a lesson in 'don't fuck up and stay in school.'

The thing is that we will not let this go on forever. Obviously the lesson has taken time to sink in, but it's widely understood that this can't go on.

The next Republican slate of candidates, if adequate and adequately supported, has a very good chance of doing very well at the next elections. (Assuming fair.) If the R Party in NY/NYC has been too degraded, we'll need some kind of dark horse Fusion candidate. But while we may tiptoe to the brink and sometimes dance there, we don't like to actually go over.

Look at Cuomo. The schools will reopen.

Thus endeth the lesson.

From the front lines here: I live about 50 yards from the Lucerne. I didn't vote for DeBlasio. I'm sure many of my neighbors did, though turnout was so low in those elections it's more like no one cared. The only hope is that enough people's eyes have been opened so that we can have a repeat of 1994 after the disaster of Dinkins, when Giuliani got elected. The problem is that I don't see any Giuliani-like candidates emerging from the brain-dead Republican party here.

Many of you desperately want NYC to sink into the sea, but (1) that is not going to happen, (2) you never have to come here if that’s how you feel, and (3) what gives with all the stupid venom.

Yes.

The problem is that I don't see any Giuliani-like candidates emerging from the brain-dead Republican party here.

Yes, that is a problem. In the past the answer has been a "Fusion" candidate like Fiorello LaGuardia. Who will be the next? Donald Trump is the kind of guy who would have been seen as a good candidate. Another popular gregarious zillionaire. I think Catsimadis has been mooted. But since I probably spelled his name wrong I'm not sure he's the right guy. Yes, the Republican party in New York has been so degraded that I don't know who could be next at bat. But whoever it is I think has a better than usual chance. New York is tired of this.

Placing street people in hotels is not the ideal solution ... since any “solution” will fail until a city’s LEADERS ARE FULLY INVOLVED in fixing the problem.

To secure their determination to fix the problem, a city’s leaders must see the consequences of the current situation, the dangers it imposes on ordinary residents, and why merely enabling the homeless doesn’t put them on the road to better behavior.

#1. Move 10 homeless people to the sidewalk in front of the home of every elected city official, every judge living in the city and every member of the mayor’s top council of advisors.
#2. Give every homeless person a small tent to sleep in and a pad for sleeping.
#3. Every morning drop off a big box of food and drinking water for the day. If possible, add cigarettes and a 12 pack of beer.

Ask yourself how many days it will take for these city leaders to get these people into a place where they are safe AND the community isn’t endangered by them wandering through a neighborhood, engaging in criminal and disease-sharing behavior.

New York City didn't go to hell in 1 or 2 years the first time either. It took 30 years from the Harlem riot of 1964 to the Giuliani era beginning in 1994 for the city to crater. Thirty years for crime to peak. Thirty years for the population to shrink by 10% before starting to rebound.

This is the 1964 Harlem riots again giving you a signal. You couldn't be receiving a clearer warning, you have history repeating itself before your eyes.

SensibleCitizen म्हणाले...

Downtown Louisville has been gutted as well. Thirty years of nurturing a vibrant city center with a sports stadium, great restaurants, beautiful hotels -- all down the drain in the course of a few weeks.

There are moving trucks lined up all day in front of luxury condo's and apartments. Businesses are not reopening because it is too dangerous even go downtown.

The mayor, Greg Fischer, just turned the city over to the hooligans while lining up dump trucks as a perimeter around his mansion in the tony Highlands neighborhood.

We got what we voted for. Maybe a Republican will have a chance next election -- but I doubt it.
