"I know that I am dealing with some form of low-grade depression. Not just because of the quarantine, but because of the racial strife..."

"... and just seeing this administration, watching the hypocrisy of it, day in and day out, is dispiriting.... I have to say, that waking up to the news, waking up to how this administration has or has not responded, waking up to, yet another, story of a Black man or a Black person somehow being dehumanised, or hurt or killed, or, falsely accused of something, it is exhausting. And, and it, it has led to a weight, that I haven’t felt in my life, in, in a while.... Barack’s in his office, making calls, working on his book. I’m in my room, the girls are on their computers. But right around five o’clock, everybody comes out of their nooks, and, we like, do an activity, like, puzzles have become big, just just sitting and doing these thousand piece puzzles.... So Barack has taught the girls [the card game] spades, so now there’s this vicious competition.... It’s almost like they needed the world to stop a little bit. You know they didn’t realise that they were, that the world they were on, and the way they were living it, was so treadmill-like. So fast and furious. Um, because it was all they ever knew.... [The pandemic is an opportunity to] decide how you want to show up in the new world. Because it will be a new world."

Said Michelle Obama, in her podcast, quoted at The Guardian.

I wonder if Michelle Obama suffers from the medical condition, depression. I hear "some form of low-grade depression" to mean that she feels low or sad based on the current conditions, not that she has clinical depression. But perhaps she does, and I would hope that people who suffer from depression feel supported by her words.

As for the Obamas, under lockdown, doing puzzles at the end of the day — I imagine that millions of people, reading about that, feel uplift just to picture the beloved family around a table in the evening  laughing and talking over a 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle. I am not kidding when I say that typing out that sentence brought tears to my eyes. What is more wholesome than a married couple with their adult children working on a complicated puzzle together? Such a beautiful life, and yet they still think of the troubles of the world and carry that weight along with them.

What puzzles do you imagine them doing? Maybe Van Gogh's "Starry Night" or Edward Gorey's "Cat Fancy" or this William Morris tapestry. That's what the Obamas in my evening fantasy are doing, and if someone made a puzzle out of an intricately detailed painting of the Obamas doing a puzzle, I would do that puzzle and so would millions of Americans. It might cure low-grade depression.

And here are the rules for the card game spades. Key rule: "The spade suit is always trump."

ADDED: "There's a tramp sittin' on my doorstep/Tryin' to waste his time/With his methylated sandwich/He's a walking clothesline/And here comes the bishop's daughter/On the other side/She looks a trifle jealous/She's been an outcast all her life/Me, I'm waiting so patiently/Lying on the floor/I'm just trying to do my jig-saw puzzle/Before it rains anymore...."

The tens of millions of families that never got to sit down and wholesomely put together a puzzle with the adult children because they never existed because the children were aborted, that ever bring a tear or two to the professor's eyes?

"I have to say, that waking up to the news, waking up to . . . yet another, story of a Black man or a Black person somehow being dehumanised, or hurt or killed, or, falsely accused of something, it is exhausting."

Considering how many thousands of blacks kill other blacks, dehumanizing each other more than any group in the western world, routinely, every year, and how little police, or the Trump administration, have to do with it, it is exhausting for any sensible black person to wake up to the reality that your own people are uniquely cruel to your own people.

No one else, anywhere in the West, would tolerate it. And it is intolerable to decent blacks. Hence the whitey did it, Trump did, systemic racism did it deflection BS.

How about a married couple, who happen to be President/ex-President and First Lady/ex-First Lady, not setting race relations back 100 years in their attempt to subvert the American form of government? That seems more wholesome...

I find myself starting to weep, too; no kidding. Imagine the Obamas having to carry the weight of the world's troubles along with them. It hurts in my tummy. How could it befall such a wonderful, puzzle-solving couple? Is there something we can do, all together, to lift their burden? Perhaps grant him immunity from prosecution on the Russia-hoax coup? I would be more inclined to think that the real weight they are carrying is more about how much trouble he stands to get into when the indictments start coming out. He has no actual fear of prison (mores the shame) but whatever is left of his "legacy" will be one and forever trashed. The real shame is the racial damage he did to this country and the weaponizing of the Government against its people due to politics. Mister "clean and articulate" was/is a phony and a fraud. May history accurately reflect his terms in office, that would [in my mind] be punishment enough for him. For the rest, jail.

The correct mindset is: What is this person going to do, for whom, and how will it help me (unlikely) or harm me (much more likely).

None of these people are your friends, It is delusional to love them just like it is delusional to love musicians, comedians, actors or professional athletes. They have a job, they do it well or badly, they don't know you, and they don't care about you. They don't deserve to be loved.

Recently I watched on cable television the 2018 movie Puzzle. It's about a middle-age mother with a bossy husband and two college-age sons who is depressed and therefore spends a lot of time doing jigsaw puzzles.

I enjoyed watching the movie.

She becomes involved in jigsaw-puzzle competitions and practices with a male partner. Although she is devoutly religious, she eventually commits adultery with that puzzle partner.

Late in the movie, the puzzle partner -- who is an intelligent, successful inventor -- explains in a monologue why depressed people spend time doing jigsaw puzzles. Essentially, he says, life is chaotic, but doing jigsaw puzzles gives you brief satisfaction that you can completely fix some of the chaos for a while.

Hey, Althouse, I have a hundred sad stories from people with real problems, people who soldier on without the privilege that comes from being the former FLOTUS, people whose lives have been turned upside down by the fallout from this virus. In a previous thread, I suggested that Ann Althouse's ability to take voluminous amounts of abuse was commendable enough to make up for the sheer inanity of reading the NYT's Kristof after demanding an incredibly high standard of proof from the American right.

I make no such concession here. Mooning and crying over patently cynical manipulation is so pathetic that I can no longer blame the Dems for assuming feminists are soft-headed mongoloids, effortlessly manipulated by the media. Does Michelle Obama even remember being a teenage girl, or did she still have a penis back then? I WAS going to ask if she actually thought her adult daughters were going to be confused with 10-year olds eager to solve jigsaws, or if she only believed her core base was that gullible and retarded. Except I know the answer to both is YES, ABSOLUTELY, because apparently lacking a Y chromosome leaves your critical reading ability on the level of a chimpanzee doped up on sodium pentothal.

And that's before addressing this ugly tranny's feeble attempt to stoke further racial violence against actual Americans and the police. It's why there's no way in hell she'll be anyone's VP: she knows that would mean being compared constantly to Melania Trump on grace, beauty, and intelligence. Which is a fight everyone knows Michelle will lose no matter how many attaboys she gets from the media.

As for the Obamas, under lockdown, doing puzzles at the end of the day-- I imagine that millions of people, reading about that, feel uplift just to picture the beloved family around a table in the evening laughing and talking over a 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle.

No comment on the following jurisdoctoral (which seems not to be a word but ought to be) teariness; people's sentimental lives, eh, there's no accounting for them. But I wonder just who regards the Obamas as "the beloved family"? Who 'loved' the Nixons, the Fords, the Reagans, the Bushes, the Bushes, the Carters, the Clintons, or the Obamas? Besides, she already hated him. Do you suppose Joe considers Michelle or Barack “notable exceptions”? When I first saw the clip, I truly thought it was a parody. As I write, there are 147 comments and only one (Todd, 12:57pm) says even part of what I think is the real reason for her depression:

"I would be more inclined to think that the real weight they are carrying is more about how much trouble he stands to get into when the indictments start coming out. He has no actual fear of prison (mores the shame) but whatever is left of his 'legacy' will be on[c]e and forever trashed."

I agree that Obama is unlikely to go to jail, but I think he will be so absolutely disgraced, as (among many other sins and crimes) the first president to try to fix the election of his successor, that he will be shunned far worse than Nixon, since what he did was far worse than anything Nixon did. Specifically, I predict:

a. His Presidential Monument will never be built. It's already way behind schedule and having problems with local opposition. It's traditional to have a presidential library where scholars can research a presidency, but it's already been revealed that his won't contain any books. Way to encourage Black literacy, dude! Who wants a monument to a contemptible crook? The Nixon Library is useful because it contains books and other records for scholars to research an eventful and fairly successful (though aborted) presidency.

b. He will never have a U.S. Navy ship named after him, and far fewer schools and streets and federal buildings than most presidents. (I think he already has some schools named after him: I wonder how many will change their names when the full story comes out.)

c. He may (and should) lose his presidential pension and even his Secret Service protection.

d. He may (and should) have his and Michelle's horrible portraits removed from the National Portrait Gallery. Or they could just put up captions explaining the aesthetic deficiencies of both and pointing out the small but clearly-depicted sperm crawling on his forehead and connect them to the rumors about his sexuality.

Have I forgotten anything?
