"How Chaos in Kenosha Is Already Swaying Some Voters in Wisconsin/As residents see fires and looting, some worry that local Democratic leaders are failing to keep control of the situation."

A headline in the NYT.
In Kenosha County, where the president won by fewer than 250 votes in 2016, those who already supported Mr. Trump said in interviews that the events of the past few days have simply reinforced their conviction that he is the man for the job. But some voters who were less sure of their choice said the chaos in their city and the inability of elected leaders to stop it were currently nudging them toward the Republicans.

And some Democrats, nervous about condemning the looting because they said they understood the rage behind it, worried that what was happening in their town might backfire and aid the president’s re-election prospects.
Are they "nervous about condemning the looting because... they understood the rage behind it" or are they nervous about condemning the looting because they're afraid of the social and economic consequences of speaking out against the looting? The NYT includes the words "they said" — "nervous because... they said they understood" — but was that because we don't know whether they really do understand the rage or is it because we don't whether they're giving an accurate account about why they are holding back from "condemning the looting"? I suspect it's the former, because the NYT is otherwise downplaying the disorder: Why is it just saying "the looting"? How about the arson and other violence? Is the NYT nervous about mentioning the arson because it understands the rage?
Ellen Ferwerda, who owns an antique furniture store downtown just blocks from the worst of the destruction that is now closed, said that she was desperate for Mr. Trump to lose in November but that she had “huge concern” the unrest in her town could help him win. She added that local Democratic leaders seemed hesitant to condemn the mayhem.

“I think they just don’t know what to say,” she said. “People are afraid to take a stance either way, but I do think it’s strange they’re all being so quiet. Our mayor has disappeared. It’s like, ‘Where is he?’”
Maybe stop referring to them as "Democratic leaders." Maybe try something like "Democratic shrinkers" or — if you're nervous about condemning them because you understand their reticence — "Democratic nice people."
On Tuesday afternoon, Ms. Ferwerda was writing “Black Lives Matter” on her storefront in red paint. On Wednesday, after the fatal shooting the night before, she said she was most worried about the people from out of town who were driving around with powerful guns claiming to keep the peace.

She said she understood the looting and burning.

“I think the rage is justified,” she said. “Anyone who is paying attention should know it was going to explode at some point.”
It is not normal to stand back and allow crime to ravage your home because you understand why the criminals are angry. It is an extraordinary response to violence! Ms. Ferwerda is one of the shopkeepers! She "owns an antique furniture store downtown just blocks from the worst of the destruction that is now closed" — to quote the weirdly edited sentence. I assume "just blocks from the worst of the destruction" was dropped in belatedly. I wish "the worst of the destruction" were "now closed"!
[John Geraghty, a 41-year-old worker in a tractor factory], a former Marine, said he was disturbed to see his town looking like “a war zone,” and he feared that the Democrats in charge were “letting people down big time.”

Politics for him had long been like a sport he did not follow. In his late 20s, he voted for Barack Obama, the first vote of his life. He did not vote in 2016, and he called the president’s handling of the coronavirus “laughable.”

Mr. Geraghty said he disliked how Mr. Trump talked but said the Democratic Party’s vision for governing seemed limited to attacking him and calling him a racist, a charge being leveled so constantly that it was having the effect of alienating, instead of persuading, people. And the idea that Democrats alone were morally pure on race annoyed him.

“The Democratic agenda to me right now is America is systematically racist and evil and the only people who can fix it are Democrats,” he said. “That’s the vibe I get.”
How can it work to rebrand America as a thoroughly racist and evil?! Who will buy that brand and how crazy are the Democrats to try to sell it?!
Mr. Geraghty said he understood peaceful protesting but felt frustrated with Democratic leaders who seem afraid of confronting crowds when things turn violent.
Exactly!
He was angry at the statement by Gov. Tony Evers on Sunday, which in his view took sides against the police in a knee-jerk way that worsened the situation. On Tuesday, Mr. Evers, a Democrat, did condemn the looting and fires, while reiterating protesters’ rights to assemble....
Evers is in the position to protect us from the violence and disorder. It is not enough to condemn it! Not if you want the leadership position. Let Evers resign if he can't or won't do his job. He's not up for election this year, but who would vote for him if he were?
Mr. Biden on Wednesday denounced systemic racism and police brutality as he also sharply condemned the destruction and violence unfolding in Kenosha.
"Denounced" is not enough. What would you do?  What action do you support? How can you protect the people who are being victimized?
“As I said after George Floyd’s murder, protesting brutality is a right and absolutely necessary,” Mr. Biden said. “Burning down communities is not protest, it’s needless violence. Violence that endangers lives. Violence that guts businesses, and shutters businesses, that serve the community. That’s wrong.”
So woefully inadequate. No glimmer of an idea of what to do. He's like the nice lady who owns the antique shop downtown. Good for you, but that's not leadership.
Meanwhile, President Trump promised on Twitter to restore “LAW AND ORDER” in Kenosha by sending in troops. “We will NOT stand for looting, arson, violence, and lawlessness on American streets,” Mr. Trump wrote....
Don Biehn, 62, owner of a flooring company, was standing in line at a gun store on Tuesday afternoon. He said that he had never bought a pistol before, but that he had a business to protect.
Yeah, well, unfortunately, you can't protect your business by using a gun. You can have a gun, and you can open-carry it without a license in Wisconsin, but you can't use the gun unless the threat of serious violence is to a person. Your buying the gun is really only an expression of dissatisfaction with the message the city has given you about the police: They will not protect you.
“There’s people running all over with guns — it’s like some Wild West town,” Mr. Biehn said. “We are just waiting here like sitting ducks waiting to get picked off.” He added: “It’s chaos — everybody is afraid.” Mr. Trump, he said, “was not my man,” but now he is grateful he is president. He said [Trump] seemed to understand in a way that other politicians did not.
“There’s nobody fighting back,” he said. “Nobody is paying attention to what’s going on.”

Scott Haight, who was boarding up a line of businesses in a Kenosha strip mall on Tuesday, said he blamed Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes, a Democrat, for what he said was irresponsibly stirring up emotion. (On Monday, Mr. Barnes said the shooting “wasn’t an accident.”) “It’s like ‘What, are you trying to burn our city down?’” Mr. Haight said.
Haight told the NYT he just wasn't going to vote. Who knows what he will actually do? Voting is secret. I suspect there are lots more Trump voters than the ones who are willing to talk about.

The article ends with a quote from a waitress at a pizza restaurant, who said,  "I’m not the one who would ever vote" but "I am going to vote for Trump. He seems to be more about the American people and what we need." There are no comments on this article, but if there were, someone would probably paraphrase "the American people and what we need" in a manner quite unsympathetic to the waitress.

Well, Democrat voters, do you really want the status quo that is presently not in charge of your safety to be returned to office? Don't you think that the leadership should change for your own personal safety? How's the Evers governor thing working out for ya?

"The Troubles"

When violence visits your world, you will choose "overbearing" over "inadequate" to respond to the threat. The rioters are demonstrating that now, and the voters will demonstrate that soon enough.

If we have an election, that is. It is becoming as hard to visualize as the debate.

Interesting times.

They couldn't be more wrong, as we've seen over the past three months. The people doing this (the antique shop owner, the governor) sound like the sort of people that would respond to conciliation offers positively. The mistake they make is believing the protesters and violent folks are like them.

Trump and his supporters are the only ones acting to end the violence and restore order. He does so without commenting on the legitimacy of the issues the peaceful protesters are questioning. The equivocation by the Democrats, leadership, and Joe Biden reveal that their motivation is purely political.

The (not-)funny thing is, what can Trump do, if local authorities continue to stonewall? Reelecting him wouldn't change out those local authorities, and he and the localities experiencing the violence would be in the same bind as they are now.

I suppose if he's reelected by a generous margin, if he has a real unequivocal mandate, then those local authorities might be able to say, "I see that voters in my district have communicated their priorities and in response I am requesting help from the federal government." But they'll be standing naked under lights at that time, since their voters are already communicating their priorities, and they're refusing the federal help that's offered.

It all goes back to the question asked in a thread a couple of days ago: who is the puppet master? Why are all these mayors and governors willing to risk - or sacrifice - their political reputations just to Get Trump?

Lefties, I'm asking sincerely. Is it the left-zeitgeist (or, if you prefer, "the horrible things he's done") alone that makes people hate Trump so much that they'll let their cities burn just to try to take him down? Or is someone or some group directing the action? I can see it either way,I suppose, but if it's just the zeitgeist, man, it moves fast.

The lady with the antique store needs to get a closer look at the problem. Maybe she'll understand the problem better when her store gets burned down.

The problem is that the Democratic governors and mayors are unwilling to call this activity what it is: arson and looting by a mob (personal responsibility dissolves in a mob). They and their lickspittles in the media want to hide behind the First Amendment--"These are peaceful protests, mostly!"--when in fact these are civil insurrections that should be suppressed by the police and the National Guard. Why do these "protests" occur at night? Who is it that turns out to burn their neighbors out? Why torch a used car dealership on Sheridan Road in Kenosha?

The difference between the way the Jacob Blake incident is described in the press and what you actually see in the videos is shocking. A Reuters story described him as an unarmed black man who was shot in the back in front of his children. Well, yes, but he also engaged in a brawl with police and threw three of them off, he probably had been tazed to no effect, he walked to his car ignoring police commands, he may have been carrying a knife in his hand, and he lunged into the car as if he were looking for something.

Was he armed? What was in the car? Why didn't he obey the cops? His wrap sheet is terrible. Did the police know that?

George Floyd was treated callously in Minneapolis, but he died of a fentanyl overdose. He wasn't murdered. People need to know the facts. The press is not giving them out.

These nightly riots are nihilistic to the point of being inane.

This behavior is described in Dostoevsky's Devils (also called "The Possessed") written in 1871. It is one of the great novels about revolutionary politics. He anticipated attitudes of the Russian Revolution by looking back at the behaviors of the French Revolution. The fecklessness of the liberals paved the way for the pathology of the revolutionaries.

Dems are gambling that there are enough minorities plus rich liberals plus self-hating nice white women, in enough states, to prevail. They are not crazy. They know that their lies and their destructive policies did not prevent Americans from voting Dem before. After all, the failure of Dem governance in most major cities has been obvious and, to coin a phrase, systemic, for decades -- without a bleat from the Dem sheep.

Anyway, the response of Dem "leaders" and the phrasing of the NYT laid bare by Althouse shows, as if proof were needed, that progs are associated with the violence. They are just trying to massage the perception to avoid a backlash. But they have no problem with the attempted revolution per se.

Of course, the prog echo chamber reinforces the ideological commitment. Witness prog commentary on the sports boycotts. Has anyone even attempted to question if they are justified at all?

Ok, I watched Crack's video. It does a good job of laying out how we got to where we are, with two caveats: 1. The assertion that where we are is "not by accident, but by policy" reinforces the perception (I'm giving the narrator the benefit of the doubt and assuming he doesn't necessarily mean it this way) that the policies that led to the household wealth disparity between whites and blacks were aimed at that result. This isn't helpful; the post-Civil Rights Act policies he enumerates, such as the War on Drugs stuff, redlining, and massive growth in prison and DEA budgets, were reactive, each one responding to a real problem.

The collective result has been devastating to a portion of black America, but it reminds me of an episode of "E.R." in which the doc trying to become a pediatric surgeon is left to close after an operation his mentor had performed. He sees a bit of fiber on the infant's liver and tries gently to remove it. The liver immediately starts bleeding. He tries to locate what he touched that he damaged. Everything he does causes more damage. He doesn't want to call back his mentor from the operation she was called away to - he delays for a few more seconds - the baby's pressure is dropping - he finally surrenders to necessity and calls back the experienced surgeon, who tries to repair the damage he caused. Afterward, she berates him, telling him "I told you to close, nothing more!"; he says he was just trying to ensure he had a clean field. She tells him, "If that baby dies, it'll be my responsibility, but it'll be your fault." The problem is, there is no mentor for race relations who can fix what we've done, and we'd have to go all the way back to Hayes to undo it, which is impossible. So where do we go from here?

2. Piling on statistics without explanation is a rhetorical trick. Again, giving the narrator the benefit of the doubt, I'll say he was doing it to illustrate only the reasons for anger among American blacks - not to advance the idea that that anger is fully justified and not at all mitigated by the whole story beyond the statistics. But the effect is the same.

Yes, Jim Crow was evil, vagrancy and other such laws applied only to black men were evil, prisoner leasing in concert with such laws was evil. But no one alive today is either responsible or to blame for those. So why take it out on us? Why not suggest a collaborative approach that we could all try? No one (who matters) wants black household wealth to continue at such low levels.

My understanding is that deadly force is only legal in defense of your person, not of your property. The Koreans on the roof were doing what they had to do, and daring the law to do what they had to do in response. The looters understood the position of the Koreans and saved their own hides at that time by not breaking in when they perceived armed defense on the rooftops. I really don't know how things turned out regarding anyone prosecuting the people on the rooftops, but I bet someone else does.

And that is a problem why? It seems most "Republicans" choose wisely. They live in "red" areas that prompt responsibility, self control, and self reliance. They support law and order and expect their elected officials to do the same.

Should we really be all that upset that blue areas that have spend years crowing about how enlightened they are and how "fair" and liberal they are. How they decriminalize "petty" crimes. Support the right to protest. Maximize the social safety net. Encourage and promote homelessness, panhandling, vagreancy, drug use and prostitution. Strip citizens of their rights to defend themselves and their property. Tax them into oblivion all the while working to make it impossible for them to make political changes to undo the damage.

You made this bed, hope you like sleeping in it. Trump is doing the correct thing, again. He has made it clear that help is available when properly requested BUT as has been pointed out earlier this year, there is a limit to his powers and he can not impose his will on the states/cities. That is THEIR domain to manage.

What was that phrase about torpedoes circling around back and those that launched them? What should we be doing from our "safe" red areas, other then stocking up on more ammo and supplied, and getting extra large popcorns?

Change has got to come from a lot of places, a lot of people, a lot of directions. But the most important change has to come from within the Black community itself. I can't initiate that change. Much to say about this and there is not the room here. Might have to say it all in another place.

If you keep doing the same things and expect the world around you to change for you, it's just not going to happen. You have to be the change. You have to change your perspective, how you interact with people, your family, kids, neighbors, and yes, the police. They actually leave their homes every morning with the job of protecting you, wondering if they'll make it back home at the end of their day. Sometimes- more often than people realize, they don't make it back home at the end of their shift. Throw in a country full of riots, national threats to kill all police, they are working on a very thin thread right now. Come at them with a knife, refuse arrest, nothing good is going to happen.

The point is that's cheap enough that it hardly matters what my personal situation happens to be. There are any number of times I would have had that much money.

So why not just pick up and go to the Africa? What is so difficult about that? We can imagine difficulties, like it being a strange place. But I can also see this as an adventure, or as a challenge that would lead to my personal growth. And it would all come with this extraordinary prize -- getting away from those evil white racists! Imagine what it would be to live in a place without racists, where people aren't trying to hold me back!

He is absolutely correct; the rest of the Democratic Party agenda is to take care of their corporate supporters, including universities and academic institutions, which they can't say in public. They do not view America as a country, but a ill-sorted basket of interest groups, each of which gets a cut of the pie as long as they support Democrats and reject Republicans. In some cases that cut is in part symbolic, running down the country or disfavored classifications such as "white males." Or, refusing to enforce the law so that their supporters can "express themselves" at the expense of others and society as a whole. But not a hint of there being something bigger, a nation that unites us all. Especially as they pay off some groups by disparaginga nd insulting others, there is no way they can do that and still be unifiers, no matter how hard the media twists things.

There are fundamental, internal problems with such a position, some of which are now becoming evident even to them.

Wasn't there a reporter, about a month ago, who was cancelled for reporting on an academic research paper that said the 1967-68 riots helped elect Nixon over Humphrey in 1968? He was cancelled then; now Lemon and C. Cuomo are saying it. This is so absurd.

H. Clinton lost in large part because her whole campaign and most of her hi-level supporters live in a small bubble and have no clue how "real people" live their lives. And tho beaten by a real estate developer cum reality TV personality with no political organization or experience, just a simple message, they show no interest in looking outside that bubble, preferring to just lie, cheat, and steal their way to victory in 2020.

Don't resist arrest.

Because if you do resist arrest, we will have no sympathy for you, no matter what happens to you.

white Americans as evil racists is obvious to most people on the planet by now.

Well, of course. Most of the "white Americans" who get media time are leftists, and they all are virulent racists.

They call it "diversity", they call it "identity politics" they call it "affirmative action", but to anyone with a brain, it's all just racism.

The problem with trying to "sell" that message is that teh people pushing it are racist pigs who are pushing for America to be more racist

For most Republicans the violence is just a TV show on Fox that doesn’t threaten them personally.

Hilarious. Lefty thinks the violence is a TV show until it comes to your neighborhood. Republicans tend to live in settings that don't tolerate that shit.

My granddaughter was shopping in San Clemente yesterday with two friends when they became aware of two adult men and teen girl who were following them and videoing them. They asked a store manager for help and she called her mother. My DIL called the OC Sheriff station and the deputies were there in 5 minutes. The three stalkers had left.

Now, think about Portland. Or Minneapolis.

OC elected Democrats in 2018 as a result of a successful trial of ballot harvesting. It will be interesting to see if that happens again.

"Some worry that local Democratic leaders are failing to keep control of the situation."
The suggestion they COULD keep control of it is funny.

Of course they could. On the first night they could have ordered the police to immediately arrest anyone engaging in any sort of violent or destructive act. Everyone arrested could have been tossed in jail and left there for teh maximum time allowed by law.

When they asked Democrat Governor Evers for 1500 National Guard troops, he should have sent them.

There is no right to riot. There is no right to violent protest. If the local Democratic leaders had made it clear that they weren't going to allow violence and destruction, there would have been very little of it

Don't worry Democrats. Your base voters are so stupid, they'll literally go bankrupt rather than vote Republican. "Sure my business burned down, but by God, those Damn Republicans lost" they'll say. I think Republicans keep making the same mistake of the believing Democrats are rational or intelligent. I think they're going to have a rude surprise when the Democrats responsible for the riots all get re-elected.

Blacks vote 9-1 Democrat NO MATTER WHAT. Other minorities 2-1 Democrat. Suburban Moms 55-45 Democrat. NO MATTER WHAT. People don't seem to understand. These people vote their identity and don't care what the Democrats actually do - or will do. They'll live in a pig sty, as long as there's a Democrat in charge.

Bzzt.

The Federal Government does not have a generalized police power. Only State and local governments do under our Federal system.

Now, at some point the President will probably chose to get involved because of the massive civil rights violations that the local officials are engaging it, by letting mobs of the politicians supporters attack and attempt to intimidate the general public

But for now he thinks the best move is to let the voters experience the results of their bad choice to vote for Democrat local officials

Doesn't the law allow for protection of property in such situations?

Your State may vary. I am not a lawyer, but one of my parents was, and I grew up around discussions and arguments about the law. And I've been through multiple carry classes (one very good one, others not so good) where teh law was discussed

In general:

No, you may not use deadly force to prevent "mere" property damage.
HOWEVER

1: Arson is not "mere property damage". Fires grown, and can easily threaten human lives. So State laws about use of deadly force when stopping arson vary widely

2: There are many places from which you do not have a "duty to retreat". If someone wants to destroy X, and you are between them and X, and you have no duty to retreat, or no way to retreat to safety, you can usually use deadly force to prevent them from going through you to destroy X

3: There are often different rules about preventing looting during a natural disaster. Because, among other things, you might not be able to replace that food / water they are trying to steal / destroy. Which means your life can be on the line there

4: What the Korean shopkeepers did was against the law. And, IIRC, at some point some political thug sent cops in to disarm shopkeepers who were protecting their property.

However

5: It's only illegal if a jury would vote to convict. And since no jury would vote to convict, none of them were charged. IMAO, no jury in Kenosha will vote to convict the kid who shot the thugs. I certainly wouldn't. And I would cheerfully lie my ass off to get on such a jury.

Minorities who complain all the time about evil white people should do the principled thing and denounce using anything invented by whitey. Start with computers and the internet...

If I remember correctly, it takes about 1.5 seconds for an individual to close the distance between another person 10 yards away. So, if this individual grabbed the knife, and turned (remember an officer was holding his shirt - quite closer than 10 yards), there was little to no reaction time. The shooting officer was in a horrible position, no question. Possibly watch a fellow officer get stabbed, or taking the shot. There is no reason whatsoever to reach under a car seat after an officer has told you not to, after being tazed, and resisting arrest. Sorry, that activity will get you shot. I would expect to be shot under those circumstances, and i'm a 55 year old white man. I've been pulled over once (classic speed trap / California roll) after not fully stopping at a stop sign. I have a concealed carry permit for my state. I told the officer such as he approached, indicated where my pistol was, and told him to secure it if he wished. He was dismissive, thanking me for my information, and gave me a $25 ticket, which with court costs and add-ons ended up being $115. BUT, I went on to work, and home to my family.

He followed his police training by shooting into Blake's body mass (easiest target).

If the cop wanted to flat-out kill/murder him he would have put those rounds into the back of Blake's head.

Good for you, tim! Got to advise you though that it's best if you vote the straight Republican ticket. As sad a lot as the GOP are, Nancy ("People will do what people will do") Pelosi is definitely one of the elements that you are fighting. So you need to do what you can to remove her from power, i.e. the majority leadership.

So please vote Republican for House, and Senate and dog catcher too as you have the opportunity. The D Machine must be drubbed at all levels.

Crack denies a knife is a reason for any American to die.

Then Crack is a moron. A knife is a deadly weapon. If you're holding a knife and threatening me, and I have a gun, there isn't a State in this nation where I can't legally shoot and kill you.

And rightly so

But as the statistics show, it really isn’t being used against that many Americans. In fact, far more Americans are dying by knives. According to the FBI data, 1,515 were stabbed, cut, or maimed to death by a knife or other cutting instrument. This is a number 5 times higher than those killed by rifles, which sits at just 297.

If a knife isn't grounds to shoot someone, Crack, then neither is a gun

A public official absolutely *cannot* sacrifice public safety to patronize interest groups. The reasons why are obvious.

Pandering to interest groups is obviously a big part of what politics is all about, but public safety is — should be — non-negotiable. That’s why this is all so shocking to so many people, a big bright line has been crossed and I for one never could have imagined anything like this summer’s violence in a naked and obvious attempt to manufacture discontent and swing an election.

Disagree with Crack. A knife is perfectly adequate reason. If you have a knife and I have no knife but a gun, am I supposed to holster it and let you cut my throat? If I have two guns, should I give you one? Should the police in addition to their service pistols, carry an assortment if knives, so that when you pull your knife, they can draw one of equal size and sharpness, so that you can have a nice fair knife fight?

Crack, I don't know if anything that would make you happy is possible. Why don't "y'all" stop criming and see how that works out for you?

AFAIK, Texas is the only state that allows deadly force to be used to protect property. All the others require you to convince a jury that your(or someone else's) life was in danger when you shot. There are articles in gun mags that explain the exact words you should use when the cops come.

Missing from the leftist commentary about protests that turn into arson and looting is this message:

You have a right to be impatient and indignant about racial inequality when you see and experience it, and to speak and act forcefully about it. But when it comes to lighting FIRES you need to light your own internal fire. That fire is not a short-lived blaze but a consistent fire powering YOU to achieve all the way to being in charge and achieving the best for yourself, despite whatever barriers you perceive. That burning desire, often called "the fire in your belly", is what can help us all bring about the change you and fellow protestors rightly crave.
