Chicago.

"The looting began shortly after midnight as people darted through broken store windows and doors along Michigan Avenue carrying shopping bags full of merchandise. Cars dropped off more people as the crowd grew. At least one U-Haul van was seen pulling up.... Crowds repeatedly tried to bash in the windows of the Omega watch store at Delaware Place and Michigan Avenue. 'The watch store,' one officer said. 'They’re gonna get it eventually.' A group of people went in and out through a broken window of the Louis Vuitton store along Walton Place across the street from the Drake Hotel. A squad car drove by and the group ran away. But as the car rode off, at least one person tried to go into the shop. The police returned. 'Go home!' One cop shouted. 'You go home!' Someone shouted, apparently back at the officer."

ADDED: At the Washington Post, the headline is "Looters smash business windows along Chicago’s Magnificent Mile," and somebody in the comments says:
This must be a first for the Washington Post. They actually refer to those who smashed windows as "looters." Yesterday, they referred to those who intended to set fire to the Police Union's building in Portland as "protesters."

Is the Post finally waking up to smell the accelerant?

I don't know any details, so this is just speculation. I suspect that this event is similar to the youth wilding events that happen in this area of Chicago every few months and more often in the summer.

It would surprise me if BLM or AntiFa were involved. It would not surprise me if Chicago gangs were involved. As the CPD declines the already strong political and economic power of the gangs increase.

This type of activity predates our recent peaceful protests and has been going on for several years. At some point, the Southside of Chicago will be completely run by the street gangs with the tacit approval of Mayor Lightfoot and the aldermen.

Lightfoot had a nice big birthday party for herself at city hall. I'm sure it was 10 or less, masks were worn and social distancing was practiced. No worries. She also built a "wall" at Montrose Beach to keep tax-payers away from beaches.

I'm beginning to think that Trump might even win IL despite massive cheating in Chicago.

The Mayor won't call in the National Guard because that would offend her base. And Trump is probably happy to let the city burn. A big plus for his campaign.

Chicago, and most of our major cities (and many of our states) are a complete mess, run by incompetent Democrats who do not have the will to do the job their post requires. Chicago is one of the greatest cities in the world. And it's being destroyed from within. Over the weekend I read about a senior driver stopped and surrounded by young men on rented bikes in the Streeterville part of town. They pulled him out of his car and drove off. When Michigan Avenue and Streeterville are gone, you've lost your city.

No one will come back. I'm sure Governor Hyatt, er...Pritzker, and Mayor Lori Lightbrain will have some way to blame this on Trump or Republicans, or some other outside group. But this is a pairing of two of the most corrupt and incompetent people in Chicago history- and that's saying a lot.

We are watching the dismantling of the USA by outside anarchists and Marxist groups who have found a home and like-minded helpers in academia, the media, and the Democrat Party. This is the reality. And one wonders, how long will the rest of America sit back idly and watch this carnage continue? How long until there are actually groups of others who feel that they have to stand up for their homes, their cities, their states, because their so-called leaders either do not have the will to do so, or they are accomplises to the anarchy.

When I lived in Chicago in this area, there was the occasional smash and grab at the big stores.

But this is a whole big caravan doing everything all at once. Because the earlier riots showed the mayor is not there to stop this sort of thing.

I was just watching CNN talking about this, and their big takeaway was that they need to discover "what sparked this". As if there is some good reason for this.

I don't know if BLM arranged this in any way, but I know BLM shut down the mag mile for Black Friday a few years ago. So these stores have been a target of theirs for years.

A few years ago someone in our group wanted to go on the Chicago mobster bus tour for a 30 year service deal so we all went. one of the hoary stories was of the Italian guys whose girlfriends wanted them to throw a brick through the Michigan st. jewelry stores and get them some diamonds. "Break this window!, Break that window!, wadiya think? I'm made of bricks?"

So there has been some level of this always. But the City will miss the 11% sales tax on these stores when they leave for safer parts. Chicago tourism and shopping was an incredible wealth generating machine that paid for a lot of social programs. I guess the populace would rather have a viton bag instead. Just about time to sell out while I can and "work from home" in a state that has no income tax.

So I'm giving thanks for small favors. (And she was clearly pissed AF.)

Took some shots at our state's attorney (although not by name) and courts, noting that if you just process and release people who get arrested, you'll just get more of this.

Again, seems fairly obvious, but I'll take it.

So far as I have seen, Kim Foxx (the state's attorney) is nowhere to be found (maybe snuggling with Jussie Smollett). Would have been nice if she and the chief judge had been up at the podium with the mayor and police super.

Seeing as how so many of the people of those and other leftist cities have been calling half the country bigots, racists, etc., you shouldn't be surprised that you aren't seeing much sympathy. You elected the people who're making all of the crime and destruction not only possible, but basically approved in the name of social justice. Lustily cheering? No. But it is difficult to be the target of their venom, accusations that we are the ones responsible for all this, and not have a bit of schadenfreude.

Are these events dangerous? Extremely so. But what can we do? Can we make the press report responsibly? Can we stop the looting. All we can do is vote for leaders who support law and order and suffer the vitriol hurled at us for doing so.

Waiting for my Indiana carry permit to arrive. With that I'll be able to legally carry in my car in Illinois even though I don't have an Illinois CC.

It took the Feds going in there to restore some order at that time with the gangs controlling the judges, prosecutors, police dept. and the politicians. Who is to say the 2020’s iteration of the gangs don’t already control at least part of city hall, considering how they are growing in power on the street, and how corrupt Chicago politics is?

For a good chunk of so-called car guys, watches are a thing, too.

There are levels of baller re watches that allow you to be way more on the DL v owning cars. Everyone knows that a Ferrari is gonna cost some dough. Watches are way more tricky to spot. The general population understands that Rolex is expensive compared to Seiko (though not necessarily when compared to Grand Seiko (not that the general population knows what GS is)). But, folks w/ a bit of an interest in watches will know what Rolexes are most desirable. And, those folks will get lost at higher levels of knowledge. Lots of levels where you can hide while being out in the open w/ your big dough pieces. Only noticed by folks like you.

For example, it’s EZ PZ to wear past fifty grand and still be under the radars of the watch guys that are at the level where folks know a new GMT is a tough get. IOW, folks can be fairly actively into watches (such that they know, e.g., which Rolexes are hard to get), but they’re still way off v how deep you can get. There’s a bit of a game that you can only win by knowing what’s what. It’s beyond just having the money to afford nice watches. Ya gotta know. No riff-raff (incl chumps that happened to be rich) can play.

IMHO.

So here in Utah, we've had a fascinating contrast to Chicago and the like. Here, for the most part, the BLM protests are in fact peaceful. And not by their choice!

So Salt lake is a Democrat town, and the first big night of "protests" was a riot. The governor had the National Guard out and armed helicopters buzzing the rioters, who quite quickly turned into peaceful protestors. It's been for the most part peaceful since, since the rioters now know that the Governor is prepared to gun them down if necessary.

So they tried 'protesting" in another city, Provo. There, the police were told to leave them alone, and one of the protestors (Inga's favorite, no doubt) shot a motorist. Caused quite a ruckus! Especially since the cops didn't do anythihg. So next night, the rioters show up to keep on being violent, right? Except... they ran into a newly formed milita group of the citizenry, all heavily armed, who just leaned against the buildings watching them. Didn't talk to them, didn't do anything but hang out there. Funny, no rioting....

Every time one of these little scuffles breaks out, where the rioters descend and fight with the cops, the next night this militia group has shown up and just lounged against the buildings, sporting enough firepower to take over a small African nation.

Our protests are peaceful. And you can see the BLM activists gnashing their teeth in frustration, because they aren't stupid enough to take on what I think are very heavily armed, trained veterans who aren't at all interested in letting them loot and cause mayhem. The cops? They are quite grateful for the support.

No time, in those circumstances, to futz around with a jam. So: I'm going with the wheel gun. If six shots and a heavy stomp on the gas pedal doesn't save me, I don't think anything will.

I'm not a cop, but as a professional combat arms officer, occasionally, we had to drill on riot control tactics.

What I got from professionals was that the forces of good and order had to know when to get violent enough fast enough. Riot control is about deterrence. You are always outnumbered, so you need to be more cohesive and organized. Once the rioters lose their fear of you, you will be swamped unless you rapidly escalate. As a Roman said:

"Let them hate us as long as they fear us"

The police in a number of cities are now faced with crowds that hate them and don't fear them. a recipe for urban disaster then martial law at the end of a bayonet.

Dem mayors and governors have not listened to LEOs. Unfortunately, the rioting is going to continue until there is blood in the streets. They need to deploy the Guard in a number of those cities, and get serious about no-bail and prosecutions.

so, I'm not cheering that Portland, my nearest city is collapsing, but I am enraged that the Mayor and Governor won't step up and kick some antifa ass. kick ass now or shoot them next week.

No, that's too simplistic. The Northwest Side is vast, about one-third of the land area of tbe city, mostly white, and middle class or wealthy. Very little crime there. The Old Man (Richard J.) used to call it "da great Nort-west side". It's quite pleasant, really, almost North Shore-like in its ambiance. Two of the neighborhoods on the NW side are, per capita, among the most Irish-American in the country: very law-abiding and well-kept. The Southwest side has white areas, notably Mr. Greenwood and Beverly, that are mostly white and, respectively, middle class and wealthy. Mt. Greenwood is primarily Irish-American, working class, lots of cops and firemen and city workers, nice home and in some places very upscale homes. Same goes for the Near North Side, although it's spotty. Beverly is problematic because it is very wealthy but borders an inner city neighborhood -- in time-honored Chicago fashion, things change radically from one side of the dividing-line street (or railroad tracks) to the other. Bridgeport and Canarville -- Chicago's version of Hell's Kitchen -- is also very Irish; surrounded by inner city crap neighborhoods, working class, raw and tough (less so than in the past, but still ...): the housing stock isn't pretty but the property values are astronomical because home owners only sell to family members.

You want to know where the bad and good neighborhoods are, take a look at the violent crime/shootings/murder map at the HeyJackass web site. The good neighborhoods are invariably majority white, by a large margin; the bad ones are black and hispanic.

Nor the West Side Donnellys and South Donnellys, and the other Irish gangs on the North Side. Those mick and dago gangsters, gotta hand it to 'em, they kept their neighborhoods safe for civilians. Even during the height of the Prohibition bootlegger wars, the civilians were hands-off; it was mainly the gangsters who were getting whacked (by each other).

Interestingly, one of the safest neighborhoods in Chicago was Ukrainian Village on the Near North Side. In the day it was all Ukrainian, and it was "patrolled" by huge blond Ukrainian "youts". You did not want to mess with those guys. It was like that until the late 70s or so when the Ukies moved out and the hood got gentrified by Yuppies.

I grew up in South Shore, which was a delightful area in the 40s and 50s but is a hell hole now. The destruction of Chicago came with the progression of the blacks into white neighborhoods, many of which were working class and ethnic. It might well have worked if the "integration" of Chicago had no coincided with the Johnson "War on Poverty" that destroyed the black culture.

What has happened is that two forces coincided. One was Johnson's destruction of the black family. The other is the rise of the black gang-politician alliance in Chicago.

He's half-right; the beam has a constant divergence angle, usually very small, and beam width increases linearly with d, so beam area increases with d^2, so the energy density decreases with d^2, but the total energy remains the same (except for loss to atmosphere).

If the beam went from 2mm to 4mm, the total energy hitting someone would be the same, but the energy/area would be 1/4th, so less likely to burn. How that'd affect someone's retina after passing thru the eyeball optics (which would tend to focus the beams) is hard to tell until the beam gets big enough that some energy doesn't hit the eye.

Democrats don't agree with that. And they don't want you to have any of it except what they permit to you, subject to revocation at any time.

Regarding the laser calculations, the inverse square law does hold for the irradiance of the laser as it does for the irradiance of a conventional point source of light (e.g., a light bulb at a distance >> than the bulb's filament size). The difference with the laser is that, being so directional in nature, the intensity is so much greater for a given power than that of a conventional light source. Assuming a 100W light bulb and a 100mW (i.e., 0.1W) green laser (which would be towards the more powerful end of the commercially available green laser sources), both at an equal distance from the source to the eye, the laser irradiance would be on the order of 80,000 times greater that that of the light bulb.

A light bulb is inverse cube law, isn't it?

I read about an interview of Martin Luther King Jr. in which he remarked on 'n*groes' who looted during riots. He said that they did not really want the things they took, but rather they wanted the experience of taking.
Think about that.

Yes, I've heard this. I don't completely understand it, but I do not like it. It seems like the expression that rape is not about sex but about power. We're not talking about Jean Valjean here.

I can't decide: should I take my 9mm or my .357? I'm partial to the latter because it'll never jam, but I'm open to suggestions.

Roughcoat, final answer I think.

A vehicle encounter may very likely be at point-blank range when an assailant attacks you through the window and you must fire at contact distance. In this case, trapped in your seat, there's every possibility that you will have to jam the muzzle into the body of your opponent.

In this case, you will put an automatic pistol out of battery and it will not fire. A revolver will not jam under pressure on the muzzle. Therefore, you should definitely take the revolver in this circumstance.

The only exceptions I can think of are blowback pistols like a Ruger 22/45, or conceivably a Walther P38 or other semi-automatic pistol with fixed barrel not covered by the slide. Even a fixed barrel pistol like a Steyr GB has a full-length slide, and if you put pressure on the bushing or the crown, you will retract it and take the gun out of battery.

This would happen with a 1911, a Glock, or any modern pistol of my recollection. Try it. Shove the muzzle of your gun into a pillow such that the slide is pushed back, oh, a quarter of an inch, then pull the trigger and tell me what happens. (Also, if it does go off, please be wearing a face shield of some sort, and heavy gloves.)

Note that a revolver may be made to jam or fail to fire, by either tightly gripping the cylinder so it does not rotate (in DA mode), grabbing over the hammer so it does not rise (DA), or inserting part of one's hand under the hammer so that it does not fall (SA or DA). This is much less likely and not by accident.

Also, probably not applicable in your case, a small auto fired from inside your coat pocket or purse may fire once, then jam as the slide gets bound up in the fabric or contents.

A revolver, as long as the hammer has an inch of room, will fire again and again, unless cloth, coins, etc., get stuck under the hammer. (Against this, get a hammerless or shrouded hammer design like the S&W Centennial Airweight of James Bond fame.)

I have a .38 special target revolver, courtesy of S&W. It is my go-to firearm. Have had it for 45 years and it has served me well.
