And he'd make a great deal.

I think there's a lot more that warrants investigation and discussion on this front, though.
A lot of people protesting for the abolishing of police forces seemed to have no problem wielding state power against people who violated lockdowns. Police are good when they punish the right people, as long as they don't kill too many black men on camera?
I think there's also a really scary implicit part of this argument, too: What's the acceptable number of people who get sick and die, and who determines that? It's obviously nothing new that people get sick, and sometimes they die from that illness -- why is it earth-shattering if that number is 0.5%, or 2%, instead of .03%? These are all hypothetical numbers I'm pulling from thin air, of course. The numbers are always changing and people spend days arguing about it, but at the end of the day they're always drawing on arbitrary distinctions by saying, "Mortality rate from this disease is X% and that (warrants/does not warrant) this lockdown." If COVID-20 (or whatever is next) has a 0.03% mortality rate compared to 19's 0.05% mortality rate, should we do less of a lockdown, and who decides that? This feels like a modern, data-driven approach that has truly scary implications to me when used as precedent down the road. Should I get arrested if I go out in public with a common cold? People die from that too, but is that number palatable enough that nobody gives a shit? Is the "new normal", as will be propagated by media and people in power, to stay inside when I have a cold and deny myself fresh air (and a speedier, more pleasant recovery) because I'm a threat to public safety and I need to be mindful of my bacterial footprint (or whatever godawful name people want to give it)? What should the punishment be for disobeying such rules?
Likewise, if wearing a mask reduces your chance of getting/transmitting germs by 48% but wearing gloves AND a face covering made with material X reduces your chances by 73% (again, hypothetical numbers), should the people reducing their chances by 73% look down their nose at the 48%-ers and force them to wear gloves and only buy acceptable face coverings? Which % reduction of germ transmission/receipt is the correct one, and what's the punishment for not adhering to that? I think this ties in largely with the "scolds" you've mentioned before when talking about the new acceptable method of online activism, because in my experience there's no shortage of people in this world who will take opportunities presented like this to scold anybody else who doesn't comply with the latest arbitrary definition of Acceptability. Because these are all arbitrary distinctions being drawn about what's the acceptable rate of reduction, and what's an unacceptable rate of reduction. Why are people not allowed to choose the rate of reduction they're comfortable with? And who decides the punishment for people who don't meet that reduction?

Will people stop living like Howard Hughes when the right experts tell them it's ok to do so? It seems like permanent damage is being done to the collective psyche of humanity, which is scary enough to me, but if the public switches back to "regular" mode at the command of Experts and their state/local executive branch, isn't that also uniquely terrifying? It feels like Radiohead's "Fitter Happier" manifesting before my eyes as people adopt the prescribed way of life with minimal fuss. For people who reject this kind of control over our lives, there isn't a political party in sight that remotely cares about us.
So much is being changed in the name of safety and I see so many un-quantifiable, non-economic reasons to reject that, even if it means getting a disease that might kill you (or wreak long-term damage on your body). I know this disease has a slightly higher chance of killing me, but I'm ok with that risk because quality of life is more important to me than a long & safe life. I want to see live music again and be in the pit at a show, surrounded by other sweaty music lovers, even if that leads to me getting sick. There's no quantifying this, other than me telling people that sharing & reveling in music is the only reason I haven't offed myself yet. Are politicians & scientists actually able to deny me (and other people who feel like me) that basic human joy because the "moment" doesn't allow for it? Apparently they are, because I have no idea when I'll get to enjoy live music again here in Southern California, but am I just supposed to be ok with that? Do musicians now only perform at the convenience of state & local authorities, as advised by disease control experts?

As a bigger philosophical question, do people fear strangers and their germs when experts tell them to? Much of America's horrific cultural changes & atrocities came from fear of strangers -- do we really need more new reasons to be afraid of strangers? We're arming ourselves to protect against home invaders, an oppressive police force, terrorists, or undocumented immigrants. We're turning schools into fortresses with armed guards, metal detectors, and active shooter drills. This pandemic response feels like just the latest in fear-based modern developments that makes life just a little more miserable and undignified. I can't quantify these things, so do they not matter?
I'm truly sorry for the length here, but I think it hits an extremely broad range of concerns that cross political affiliations (and also exist outside any established political parties) and I think these kind of questions are things you touch on more than most anybody else I've read in journalism. "He knew the Polish workers were working ‘off the books,’ that they were doing demolition work, that they were non-union, that they were paid substandard wages with no overtime pay, and that they were paid irregularly if at all," the judge found.
Stewart suggested that it would have been difficult for anyone not to notice the Polish Brigade. “The Polish workers were obvious not only in numbers but also in appearance,” the judge found. “In contrast to the union workers, the nonunion Polish workers were distinguished by the fact that most of them did not wear hard hats.”

A little anecdote about the accuracy of the numbers we are using to destroy the greatest economy on earth, and thus destroy the only proven means to prosperity, health, and protection of the environment ever discovered.
I personally know of three women who recently went together to get tested for Covid in Fresno, CA. They arrived at the testing facility filled out the paperwork and waited. After an about an hour, they decided to leave without ever being swabbed or tested in any way. All three were later contacted and told they tested positive. I have read other stories of the same thing happening, but these are people I know of personally, and creates a 100% false positive tally among the people I know of who know they were negative. Funny how nobody reports such a thing ending in a negative test result.
So many of our people are willing to treat each other like criminals, ruin lives, and destroy futures based on these kind of lies. These are not mistakes. People are fudging the numbers, and it's hurting every one of us badly. We need to stop this dishonesty in our government. How can we really trust an election with so many of our people willing to do this kind of thing. We need prosecutions and sentencing for people doing these things, not just people who happen to know Trump, which seems to be the only remaining offence left worthy of a trial.
Well, Chuck, maybe it's harder to pass something when try to actually keep your promise about what it will do. I don't think I have to remind anybody of what Obama promised us over and over in speech after speech, and then how far away the results ended up being from that. They are nearly the opposite. There is more than one way to break a promise, and some do real damage.

When people describe the speech or conduct of others as “hateful” I am struck by the ambiguity of the term. On one hand, it means I hate the speech, idea, or action involved; but on the other hand it can mean that I think the speaker or actor is motivated by hate. Turns out low Vitamin D blood levels are associated with worse outcomes for ALL URIs, add TB, for over a decade. Yet, it is not routinely measured in medical exams unless you appear to have osteoporosis or at high risk. Apparently the small amount people get from drinking milk- those who drink, at least don't get rickets, which comes from severe Vitamin D lack.

Boeing and SpaceX got their Commercial Crew contracts at the same time. Boeing got nearly twice as much money, and has decades more experience building spacecraft. SpaceX is going to start fulfilling their contract next month. Boeing has at least two more demo launches first. When both companies are flying, seats on Boeing's Starliner will be at least twice as expensive as SpaceX's Dragon.
Bezos' Blue Origin started in 2000. Musk's SpaceX started in 2002. Both were started with the goal of building reusable rockets to drive down the cost of SpaceX exploration and exploitation. Musk is sending cargo and people to the space station using reusable first stages and capsules. He's even started recovering the and reusing the nose fairings of his rockets. Bezos has yet to achieve orbit with any rocket.

It's a socially distanced café, where you're sitting at different tables, alone with your laptop. Notice I say now that you can write about whatever you want. I don't say "you can talk all night." It's not back and forth among yourselves anymore. It's the way things are. I keep early hours, but I give you a place to write. If you want to chat back and forth, I think there are places on the internet you can go. I have to keep the moderation on or things would go to hell. It's where we live now, and I can't control it except in the way that I have — moderation.

I got pulled over by 2 cops with guns drawn. Rural IA. 10:30 at night. It was a blacktop road but they pulled me over as I turned into the gravel. I was not "pulled" from my car, but ordered to open the door, show both hands, and then swing out one foot at a time, and stand. Then walk backwards toward his voice.
My plates did not match my car. The deputy had called it in, and when it came back hinkey, he followed me and waited for backup, before pulling me over.
I had traded cars. On advice of my father, he recommended I keep all the paper paper work in the car for just this reason. That included the description of the car I traded in. (government is not very reliable in carrying out their duties in a timely fashion). If I had no paperwork I most likely would have spent the night in jail.
Put that down to life happens, not ill will by the police doing exactly what we hire them to do.
Like the Professor Gates situation, cops doing their job should be celebrated. The difference was I don't feel entitled, and I follow the direction of Police Officers. Produced all the paperwork requested plus more. Why? Because my dad gave me "the talk". The talk about how not to get shot by demanding rights, out in the middle of no where, while I have rights, on the side of a road, I have no power to enforce those rights, and trying to enforce them postmortem is for losers.

I can pretty much guarantee that few people in that town had any clue which Stapleton it was named after- and fewer probably cared. And a town name change comes with some actual real life monetary costs. New stationary, repainting all the town's vehicles- DPW and police. And depending on the municipality, complying with all state, county, and local laws and regulations governing such.
Back in 1973, the year I graduated HS, East Paterson became Elmwood Park, a move approved by their voters- and widely mocked in the rest of the county. After the change- Elmwood Park was till east of Paterson... Nothing changed.
What's interesting is their first elected Democrat mayor was forced to resign and prosecuted and convicted for vote fraud. Wow, what a surprise! Right? The voters there are apparently schizophrenic- the mayor is Republican, all council members Democrats.
Most people neither know nor care who or what their town was named for. I just looked up mine:
The town was aptly named. The southwest portion of Savannah is comprised of an extensive swamp of nearly 1,900 acres which was covered with coarse grass. Our county has an actual paid historian who keeps track of such things... every county should have one. My street is named after the family that lives 2 houses down on the other side- about 1/4 mile away, and up the street on my side about a mile and 3 houses away. Virtually very street in town is named after a family still living in it.
The pity is, Crack, that Howard was trying to, I won't say suck your dick, I'll say, kiss up to you, with that remark, in his usual snide sarcastic way. He wants to be your fren. He may have interest in long hot showers together.
Howie, the pity is that Crack proves rhhardin right that his IQ is too low to understand your subtle rapier wit. To be fair, nobody else understood you either. Please please please, try those "social skills" of yours in the street sometime. Try and be sure it gets videoed.
Crack, stop whining about the car stop. It was a mistake about the plates. I've been stopped because my car fit the description, and you bet your ass I moved slow and followed instructions till it was sorted.
