"Urban trekking around Denver the other day, I happened across a protest march of maybe a thousand people. Here’s what I observed. The marchers were almost all white...."

"Most were young women looking vaguely guilt-ridden. They were well-dressed, well-groomed and well-fed.... But one sign troubled me. It appeared in various incantations, but the gist was 'Justice NOW for George.'... I’ve watched the video of George dying, and it was horrifying. If no exculpatory evidence turns up, then I hope those cops rot in jail. I’m guessing nearly all people – including other cops – hope for the same. But notice the 'if' in the preceding paragraph.... Here, the cop has been arrested and is in jail on a million-dollar bond awaiting... trial. Given that, what exactly does the shouted word 'NOW' mean in 'Justice NOW for George'? Are the protesters demanding that we bypass the trial and just lynch the cops right now?"

Quick! Somebody severely punish the big bad police officers before any evidence can be presented. There's got to be a rope around here somewhere!

If the cops involved are quickly scapegoated, it's less likely the public will have an opportunity to thoughtfully consider the horrible policies enacted by long-time Democratic officials in these cities and the corrupt gravy train can get back to SOP.

The author will soon be required to apologize or be fired.

What if the evidence shows that the cop was a Democrat who mourns global warming and drives to yoga class in a Prius with a COEXIST bumper sticker, and that George admired Justice Clarence Thomas?

Such hypotheticals are wrong thinking and not allowed.

As for the original question about the meaning of "justice NOW", I think of it as a boiler plate demonstration sign. The writer should have seen the nuance of the NOW as meaning this time and soon, not really NOW-NOW.

Just wait until the trial when the police officers are found not guilty. There is a lot of information not yet in evidence.

If there's one thing I hate more than feral black criminals 'urban trekking' through America's cities the last 40 years, it is their white enablers seeking to keep them on the plantation harvesting their votes in exchange for either feigned solidarity or - in an increasing trend - actually buying into their self-guilt over institutions that haven't existed for 160 years in this country, much later in the history of other countries (like the Middle East), and for which the minorities in question were in many cases participants in their own subjugation.

Run on sentence I know, but there's a lot to fit in. Apologist-whites are first on my 'boogaloo' hit-list.

Three years ago it took the Minneapolis PD over six months to fire and arrest a Black cop who killed an innocent White woman. What more was supposed to happen?

Yes, this love for George Floyd is the new political cant indulged in by the liberal bourgeois use. And the hatred of the police. BTW, one can just imagine Mitt Romney in Aspen with the marchers, drinking a caffine free latte. He already supports Antifa and Black lives matter.

Yes that is the demand. But perhaps it’s an allusion to the National organization of Women, and how she imagines women would benefit from defunding the police.

I'd say most of those people are just virtue signaling, and simply used to immediate gratification.

Protesters on message would say that if they don't cement the demand for "Justice NOW" while the nation's attention is focused, then the demand for justice later will have a way of dissipating given notoriously short attention and outrage spans.

Many on the right fear this already happening with Obama-gate scandals. The profound difference, of course, is the media averting its eyes from a political scandal of unprecedented scope and doing everything in its power to kill the story in its crib.

The portion you quoted about a rush to judgment is valid. And I agree with the additional point (in the article, not included in your excerpt) that most of these protests are cheap examples of self congratulation about how woke the participants all are -- but the author peppers his beat with unnecessary provocation that detracts from his credibility. The women are "well-fed." Their boyfriends are "neither well-groomed nor well-fed. They were scrawny and scruffy, if you ask me, with thin beards." "Not that there’s anything wrong with a guy with a body and beard that are thin and a girlfriend who’s not." "[T]hese suburban girls and their girly men aren’t looters." Reference to "pull[ing] our 9mm" even if the point is there is no worry about it.

View points that challenge the leftist narrative need to be more careful. They're already going to twist and mischaracterize. Authors shouldn't make it easier for them.

Given the medical autopsy report, there is already exculpatory evidence that should lead to an acquittal of Chauvin on the murder charges, if the judge and jury do their actual jobs right.

You actually have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that it was the knee in the neck that killed Floyd. The autopsy failed to do that, and I don't see a way around this fact.

The whole country has jumped the gun on this, and when it comes trial time there is going to be an explosion that will make the Rodney King fiasco seem like a walk in the park if the cop is not convicted. While this may be heresy in the current environment, I think there is a distinct possibility he will not be. Specifically,

- I could be wrong in my understanding of the autopsy report, but did it not say that he had significant if not potentially deadly levels of meth and/or Fentanyl in his blood at the time he died?
- Did he not have existing heart disease and pulmonary disease which was certainly not helped by the drugs in his system? Could his repeated "I can't breathe" pleas be a result of the existing heart and blood oxygen issues caused by the underlying diseases and exacerbated by the drugs, rather than a result of the knee on his neck?
- Did not the autopsy report describe the dissection of his neck tissue and the finding that there was no indication of bruising or trauma to the neck or windpipe or of suffocation?
- Was this knee on the neck not an approved method to hold someone down and hadn't it been employed perhaps thousands of times in multiple police departments across the country without significant injury to the person being restrained? If not using this particular immobilization technique, what better options were available to control a six foot six, two hundred plus pound suspect who was extremely violent until he was pulled from the police car's back seat and pinned? Did not the police call an ambulance after pinning Floyd down because they suspected he was under the influence of drugs?

I'm not a lawyer (thank you, Jesus!) but for a juror couldn't there be enough there to make a second degree murder charge at least somewhat questionable?

jaydub, the duration of the kneeling was excessive, and absolutely unnecessary once the suspect was handcuffed. He should have been rolled onto his side, or placed in a sitting position, or even laid on his back once cuffed. Continuing to kneel on him was indeed against training and police policy, specifically because doing so for long periods is proven to be dangerous to the one kneeled upon.

I weigh over 300 pounds, and would be happy to demonstrate this by kneeling on your neck for 9 minutes if you so desire to test your hypothesis yourself. If not, stop your BS.

Then my advice to you is don't ever resist arrest. Floyd was over 300 too, as was Eric Garner. Turns out, resisting arrest when you're in very poor physical shape is a bad idea. Garner didn't even have drugs in his system as far as I recall (well, maybe some marijuana).

"Continuing to kneel on him was indeed against training and police policy"

Please cite the police manual you are referring to. Because I see lots of cops, around the world, treat suspects this way, even after they have stopped resisting. There was one case in Texas I believe where cops straight-up sat on a dude, who later died. That guy was white though, so we never hear about him. He must've deserved it cuz privilege.

This is what worries me. I despise Ellison but this was a tough cookie no matter how you cut it, however I think he chose poorly - possibly deliberately. Overcharge and appease the mob, or charge with a more likely "convictable" offense, but possibly fail to quell the immediate furor?

effinayright said...

jaydub, police forces had long ago been informed by the DOJ that placing pressure on a prone person's neck was a dangerous technique:

https://www.ncjrs.gov/pdffiles/posasph.pdf

That document offers a number of reasons why such a restraint method was dangerous.

They chose to adopt it anyway, their local regs offering with advice as to do it only if necessary and only for so long as needed to subdue the suspect.

MPLS police was needed to subdue Floyd, but once they had him pinned (three officers on his neck, back and legs) they could have rolled him over on his back and pinned him from that side.

Yet even after the guy passed out, they kept him pinned on his stomach.

Piss-poor judgment on their part, at the very least. And if it turns out there was any animus between Floyd and Chauvin, that will seal the latter's fate.

Why was he pulled from the police car? Once you have the suspect in the backseat, game over. Isn't it? The suspect may wriggle or kick or flop up and down, but don't they do that all the time? Isn't the backseat of a cruiser armored against this happening? If not, why not? Let him writhe in his cuffs.

How were they going to stop him from struggling? Kill him? Render him unconscious? Extort him with a picture of relatives that would suffer if he continued? Bribe him? Shoot him up with tranquilizers?

You got a guy struggling, he's not going to stop struggling until he wants to stop struggling. How are you going to accomplish that, make him want to stop? As you say, he could submit and resume struggling as long as he liked. Police procedure should encompass this.

Better than even odds she'll be back, and even if not, you just avoided a possible stint in jail (or the hospital, if you're a soyboy lib) over a girl who - in the end - is absolutely not worth the hassle.

Leaving the scene signals that you KNOW she's not worth the hassle. Depending on her level of sluttiness, she'll be back to try and prove to you that she is worth it.

In the meantime, go find a different girl who doesn't have that particular tic. You'll be glad you did.

The far greater question is whether the main defendant or the co-defendants can get a fair trial.

And the clear answer is a clear NO.

There is not a single juror in this country that would not feel the infinite pressure on him or her to vote guilty regardless of the evidence presented at trial. Why? Because they know that a "not guilty" vote, or a hung jury, means riots and destruction and death.

To have a fair trial, you need jurors that are at least willing to consider the possibility of voting not guilty regardless of the consequences.

One thing I've noticed about these guilty girls marches is that the white protestors are mostly wearing masks though not maintaining social distancing. I've heard that hospitals are expecting an uptick in serious Covid cases and will not be handle them under present policies. You see a serious Covid case takes a lot of nursing and lasts a long time so that hospital ICUs are still almost filled with serious covid cases although covid new infection rates have fallen like a stone throughout the country. Now we have had days of protests and, more seriously, nights of rioting in which police without helmet masks were spit upon and rioters were jammed together looting, running and, in general, breathing heavily upon each other. Almost as bad as being in church. An uptick in cases and hence a few days later an uptick in serious cases is expected by all hospitals. But the ICU rooms are now almost full. So unless preparations are made to distribute cases among ICU rooms, hospitals in areas close to riots will be overwhelmed and there will be triaging. But our glorious public health professionals are too busy rounding up mothers who have allowed play dates to work out a plan for a spike in cases followed by an ICU shortage in hospitals serving the black communities. There isn't planning and there won't be nurses and there won't be ventilators and there won't be oxygen for all those needed those treatments. I can't breathe - Part II - coming soon to a hospital not near where guilty girls live.

The black street culture, the exoticism of Islam and the Hispanic celebration of macho men are far more attractive than the emo cucks they grew up with.
