"We cannot let the work of a few undermine the pain felt by our Black neighbors or distract from the source of this grief and anger—we must remember George Floyd..."

"... his life matters, he should still be alive today. Right now, we must respond with our empathy and compassion. We must remember that anger and grief about injustice never need justification. We need systemic change to address the racism in our state and our country. As folks continue to protest and demand accountability and change, please do so peacefully—be kind to each other, help each other, and keep each other safe. And the stories of our neighbors who are hurting and demanding a more just and equitable country must be told to and seen by the people of our state and this country. Please allow the press to continue to tell them without interference or fear of violence or arrest."

A series of tweets by our Governor, Tony Evers.

He says "our Black neighbors," so he is assuming that the reader is not black. Black people are the other. Speaking only to white people, apparently, Evers portrays black people as emotional: "the pain felt... this grief and anger.... anger and grief... our neighbors who are hurting." He tells us, "we must respond with our empathy and compassion." In this conception, we the white people have empathy and compassion, not raw and dangerous emotion like anger, and we are the ones who are spoken to with the implied belief that we are capable of controlling ourselves and behaving in a forbearing, beneficent manner as we look upon The Other, our black neighbors. It's unsettling, this otherizing, and I don't think Governor Evers noticed he was doing this. Ironically, he wants the "us" group he's addressing to be vigilant about "systemic" racism.

At first, I focused on how these riots will help Trump win Minnesota in 2020 after he almost won the state in 2016.

* For Clinton = 46.4%

Now I recognize that I was thinking too small.

These riots will help Trump win 40 states in 2020.

In 2014 Blacks rioting about the killing of shoplifter Michael Brown destroyed Ferguson, Missouri. Then in 2015, Black students complaining about imaginary racism destroyed the University of Missouri.

By means of those two events in 2014-2015, Missouri's Blacks turned the state from a purple state into a red state, because two-thirds of Missouri's Whites now vote Republican.

I described this political shift in my blog article titled Support for Democrats has collapsed in Missouri.

My article's highlights:

Missouri citizens voted in recent Presidential elections as follows:

2000
Republican = 50.4%
Democrat = 47.1%

2004
Republican = 53.3%
Democrat = 46.1%

2008
Republican = 49.4%
Democrat = 49.3%

2012
Republican = 53.8%
Democrat = 44.4%

2014
Riots in Ferguson

2015
Disruptions at the University of Missouri

2016
Republican = 57.1%
Democrat = 38.0%

More simply, here is the Democratic Party's collapse in the last three Presidential elections:

2008 = 49%
2012 = 44%
2016 = 38%

The key point is that nationally coordinated cells of BLM and Antifa have taken over the protests (riots) and are now attempting a socialist coup in dozens of American cities. This something new. We have had race riots and protests over police brutality often in the past, sometimes on a huge scale (the 60's). But this is the first time we have experienced European-style leftist, revolutionary street violence. It will be interesting to see if we get a permanent violent Baader-Meinhof-Gruppe roaming our cities.

Historically and culturally, this has been the norm. Instead of 'immediate' rioting erupting in a flash....."white" people tend to be more of a slow burn that builds up to a longer lasting and more widespread fire.

Anger is NOT raw and dangerous emotion, when it is a well banked and controlled fire. Anger is actually a good emotion when it is channeled in a smart and strategic way. Rioting and destroying property and people that have nothing to do with your anger...is not strategic OR smart.

Forbearance is not necessarily beneficent.

Most people are not racist. Most people, when put one on one with another human being, deal with that human being with kindness, genuine curiosity, calm, interest, empathy, or, at the very least, politeness. That goes for black, white, brown, red people. Muslims, Christians, Jews, Agnostics, Hindus, Buddhists, Rastafarians, Taoists, et.al. Day in and day out, we know what we should do, how we should treat each other, all of us.

Except for the extreme Left and the extreme Right. And those two groups are driving this country apart.

Not to say there is nothing more to this. Years of looking at the squalor that is our inner cities, the black children having to grow up in areas that are less safe than Baghdad, going to schools with no hope of a real education, just hoping to live to the ripe age of 18. That's where we need to be addressing things. But...Dems got what Dems got. They own the cities. They hold onto the black vote by telling black America that all Republicans are racist and want to kill them. Then comes individual assholes- again, the extreme on either side, and a man is killed, needlessly, in front of the world. And everything I said up above about us knowing how to treat each other, is tossed out with the garbage.

We're in for a long haul here. The Left is adamant about ripping apart our country. They have help from outside of our country, as well as inside. This cannot end well.

Unfortunately for the progressive leadership in many of these cities, this is their constituency. This is the base they feed and exploit with promises of free stuff, utopia, and ‘understanding their pain’. These are often the mobs they mobilize for political/social power and influence.

Now would be a good time for voters to send these particular politicians outside the city walls and put the people committing crimes in prison.

I think most Americans want to be left alone and to do well for themselves and their families.

Some—my wife calls them the interfering classes—want to intervene and direct the affairs of individuals and families. We have all heard the excuses for this interference—“We must protect people from harming themselves and their families—particularly the women and children”. This leads inevitably to what we are seeing now— the rejection of individual responsibility and the destruction of order in the name of a higher good.

Examples drawn from fiction are never more than illustrative, but consider Huck Finn. Was there ever a worse-parented person than the fictional Huck? Yet, he has a moral center that leads him to good decisions for himself and others, rejecting the constraints of authority. That is part of our national ideal.

Yes, the attitudes of so-called 'public servants', which has been encoded from the top down into a form of attitudinal superiority that 'their lives matter' more than those they are sworn to protect.

I looked up Jim's reference to the wrongful shooting of an unarmed Australian woman by a Somali office in Minneapolis. Here's was the crux of Noor's defense:

Noor’s defense team argued that based on the officers’ testimony, they feared a possible ambush. They said that Noor’s police training informed his actions to protect himself and his partner.

For my part, my neighbors don't get smashed then try to pass fake twenties.

@BUMBLE BEE, mine either, but neither getting publicly drunk nor passing counterfeit bills is a capital offense. Nor is resisting arrest.

And this is why both the initial protests-turned-riots and the current Antifa riots are postponing us from a much overdue discussion of what is and what is not acceptable use of force by police on citizens. There has been successful pushback here and there, but waiting until someone dies is not how we should be evaluating police policies on use of force to subdue people resisting arrest.

Let me mention another common police policy — in at least some jurisdictions cops routinely shoot agitated, barking dogs when pursuing criminals, even if the dog is behind a fence and represents no physical threat. Someday someone attached to his dog is going to respond without thinking and a cop, and probably that homeowner, too, will be dead. Far fetched? Would you believe it has already happened? The score at the end of the first day of the siege at Ruby Ridge was, in order, one dead dog, one dead U. S. Marshall, and one dead teenaged boy. Obviously not enough bodies to cause police to rethink their policy.

But the discussion of which techniques are allowable for subduing large, resisting, criminals will not happen in Minneapolis because people with a legitimate complaint about police actions degenerated into looting and then Antifa showed up.

In her post she essentially approved of the rioting in Omaha on Friday night. I called her out that it is unseemly for a law professor to condone law breaking. She then insulted me and said I had poor reading comprehension for a lawyer.

She told me to read “White Fragility.” I told her to read Tom Wolfe’s “Back to Blood.” She then cited stats about how this “White Fragility” sold many copies compared to Wolfe’s novel.

She then blocked me. She’s no Ann Althouse. She’s a third rate intellect. The faculty at my alma mater has really declined.

I think that it is fairly obvious that these riots have been planned for some time. It’s now summer, which is riot season around the world, and the country is reopening itself up. These various progressive anti-Trump attacks have to be sequenced. We are now in the COVID-19 response that it won’t really interfere with the rioting any more.

I expect that these riots have been queued up and ready to fire for quite some time now. We saw them practicing last year, in places like Portland, and expected to see it amped up this summer. If there hadn’t been a questionable White on Black police killing, something else would have been used as an excuse. Or, if one wasn’t found, they’d fire it off anyway. They didn’t need an excuse really. We saw that last summer. All they need is their rage at Trump and their Soros funding.

One thing that is going to be interesting is whether or not AG Barr can get the FBI in gear. I don’t expect Dir Wray to be ousted until after the election. There is a running joke that if you ever find a meeting with three Klansmen, two will be FBI informants. Did Wray even attempt to penetrate these AntiFA, Black Bloc, BLM groups? They could have been scooping up all of their communications over the last year or two. Were they?

AG Barr pointed out that rioters crossing state lines to riot, or those planning riots across state lines, etc, can be arrested and tried under 18 USC §2101. He was rather prompt with that. Was the DOJ already planning for this? How about the FBI? Should have been spending significant resources all winter on this threat. Did they? The FBI seems to have spent the year stalling courts and the Senate about their significant part in the attempted coup against Trump. We shall see.

Yeah, let's remember George Floyd;

"Standing at 6 feet 6, he was a star tight end for Jack Yates High School, where he earned the nickname “Gentle Giant” from classmates." I'll bet they miss him now!

And don't let's forget this;

"In 2007, Floyd was charged with armed robbery in a home invasion in Houston, in which another man posed as a water department worker in an attempt to gain access to a woman’s residence, according to court documents. When the woman realized he wasn’t actually a water department worker, she tried to close the door. That’s when five other men got out of a car that had just pulled up and forced their way inside. According to charging documents, the largest man in the group, whom the victim identified as Floyd, “forced his way inside the residence, placed a pistol against the complainant’s abdomen, and forced her into the living room area of the residence.”"

Well, heck. After all that, it appears they didn't even rape her. At least, they didn't charge him with rape. Good old George did five years in the pen for home invasion robbery. He's a prime example of why sensible people spend a great deal of money to avoid having any "Black neighbors".

There are a number of YouTube channels that feature videos of cops screwing up - the channels offer analysis of how the officer could have handled the sitution better. These channels are run by cops, martial arts and other hand to hand combat instructors, or expert shooters.

There are a lot of incidents of cops escalating situations over *shoplifting*. Tons of them - drawing guns and shooting, getting into physical altercations, and sometimes even losing their service weapon to the suspect - over shoplifing. In one I watched recently, an all-white cast got into a really asisine situation where a white female cop went to a home of a suspected shoplifter (white) that seemed to have some mental/emotional issues. Guy resists arrest. They wrestle. He gets a hold of her gun. Somehow - his mother gets shot and a second shot goes out the front door (no follow up on that). Finally, the female cop's male partner enters the house and knocks the guy out. Now there was no follow up on any injury there (the video was mainly to teach how to NOT lose your gun) but he got hit pretty hard. In his own home. Over *SHOPLIFTING*.

I've wondered for long time: have we solved all of the really serious crimes and now cops have little to do but chase shoplifters?

What do you mean, ironically? Of course he is targeting whites, of course whites are to blame for systemic racism, of course actual blacks are not in the picture.

Ironically, it sometimes takes nice smart liberal women a couple of decades to figure out The Narrative and how progs push it. Next, they'll realize that, Karen or not, it's all their fault--blacks have more to fear from them than from the KKK or other blacks--and many of them will even believe it. A big part of prog racial politics is about getting white women to submit.

Excellent point. Black cop kills a white woman who called 911, no riot in Minneapolis. It also shows that the Minneapolis PD has a history of misbehavior that did not begin this month. For nearly 60 years, Minneapolis has had Democrat mayors. (since 1961, with 3 days of a Republican Mayor around Jan 1, 1974). Conclusion: Minneapolis PD misbehavior is the responsibility of the Democrats running Minneapolis for the last 6 decades.

Agreed.

It's an election year that is not looking good for Dems who have a possibly senile, possibly rapey, definitley white man as their presumptive nominee. The attempted destruction of the economy using forced shutdowns driven by media-induced hysteria over Covid-19 is failing due to civil disobediance. What to do?

The "never let a crisis go to waste" leftist hate-peddlers and race-mongers in the propaganda media seize on an opportunity to fan the flames of racial animosity. Even though most Americans agree that Floyd's death was wrong. Can't have unity and agreement in this county*; you dont get eyeballs glued to the screen over that, and you can't hurt Trump with it.

As expected, the useful-idiot leftist "educators" and "community organizers" encourage the angry, emotionally broken, intellectually stunted youth to take their anger to the streets. The DNC media narrative will be to blame the predictable rioting and chaos on Trump and racism (naturally).

I expect the riots to die out when the internal polling shows that they are only succeeding at pushing normal people away from the divisive Democrats.

What if he was fundamentally a good cop merely doing what he was trained to do, applying a technique for subduing a large, strong person who is resisting arrest that he was taught to apply and that he was told was safe to apply if done right? You can lock Chauvin up for 1000 years, but unless Minneapolis changes its policies and changes the techniques it teaches officers for subduing large, strong, strongly resisting people they are trying to arrest, it will just happen again.

If I was on the jury (I won’t be!) and the defense proved that Chauvin’s instructors taught him that the technique was safe, I would probably vote to acquit.

Here's what (most) white people already know, and what black people should understand. When a white person says, "It's institutional racism" the subtext is "Don't blame me. I'm not racist. It's all those people who aren't like me." The claim of "institutional racism" is a cop-out. Racism is put into action by individual people. So if black incarceration rates are attributable to racism, it is not some amorphous "institutional racism" it is a series of actions by police officers, prosecutors, judges, members of juries, members of parole boards, etc. But in every case individual people taking actions which are (or are not) racist.

>>For those not familiar with the Magnificent Mile this is a distance of three miles.

For the sake of accuracy, the distance from the water tower to Roosevelt Road is barely more than two miles. While a north-south mile is 8 "blocks"/800 street addresses elsewhere in Chicago, the distance from Madison(!) (ground 0) to Roosevelt Road (1200 South, where I went to high school a bit further west) is just a mile. The water tower itself is just past Chicago Avenue, 800 North, or one mile in the opposite direction. Michigan Avenue ends more or less at Oak Street, about a quarter mile further (in a high-rise containing Spiaggia, Tony Mantuano's pricy but nice Italian restaurant), with Lake Shore Drive/the lake to the east and residential high rises to the west.

In addition, the "Magnificent Mile" is just the part of Michigan Avenue north of the Chicago River, where all the fancy/pricy chains, etc., are located. Maybe three quarters of a mile in toto up to the water tower. If your information is otherwise correct, that's presumably where the window breaking occurred. And I am doubtful that there was any window breaking at Water Tower Place, aka the John Hancock building across the street from the water tower, or some of the other high rises in the area. Not to mention the water tower itself, where there aren't any windows to break.

South of the river, there are also few, if any, windows to break to the east. There are instead Millennium Park, Grant Park, and the Art Institute and, further to the south and east, the museum complex (Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, and Adler Planetarium), then Soldier Field still further south. Even on the west side of Michigan Avenue, not a lot of ground-level windows I can think of in, e.g., the "Cultural Center" (once upon a time the headquarters of the Chicago Public Library) or the former Conrad Hilton hotel (location of some of the riots in '68).

South of Roosevelt Road was a desolation in my time. Has become an up and coming area, I believe, but I'm doubtful there was any rioting there.
