Meade that's not your best picture, since its too dark. Everything merges together in a big blob of darkness. I give you a C+. Sorry, I can't tell you how you could have made it better, I just criticize.

rcocean ayon kay ...

Dogs always make good pictures though. Why not get some cats too?

Peachy ayon kay ...

You have a dog bed for when your neighbor's dog comes to visit?

that's awesome.

Howard ayon kay ...

The big overuse of darkness is perfect. It's a standard illustration technique that adds an air of mystery. It reminds me a little bit of how The Third Man used darkness as a lighting technique.

Howard ayon kay ...

Rcocean is a cat lady. That explains everything.

Please describe your experience on balance trainer. Thanks

I've got to stand up for Meade here and say from experience that getting a good picture of a black lab is really difficult, and takes rare (or staged) lighting.

Nice hat.

Very hip.

Peachy ayon kay ...

Meade - that is really offensive to superior progressive sensibilities.

Ban Patsy Cline now!

I thought our hostess avoided hats. I recommend Stetson's.

Ann Althouse ayon kay ...

"I thought our hostess avoided hats."

Where did that come from?

I love hats, but I have a very large head and sometimes complain about the lack of women's hats available to me.

The hat in question is a classic fedora. The brand is well known: Borsalino.

I got that in Austin years ago, at a men's store. I wear it inside to shade my eyes when I'm working near the window.

Yes, but Carol Reed and Robert Krasker lit their subjects' faces.

I've got a black dog as well (a 30 pound Heinz 57 variety all American mutt). It's virtually impossible to get a good picture of her since she's "the absence of light". Even if you put her against a white background it's tough to make out details of the dog in a picture. Easy enough to see with the eyes (at least with a contrasting background) but the camera lens hasn't figured it out yet.

Ms. Althouse if you have a really big head (me and baseball manager Bruce Bochy both have the same hat size 8 and 1/4) I recommend the Big Hat Store in San Diego. One size does not fit all and most hat shops stop at 7 and 3/4.

Ann Althouse ayon kay ...

I just need 7 3/4.

Ann Althouse ayon kay ...

And I don't think that Big Hat Store has women's hats.

That's the problem.

An extra-large men's hat is good for me, and they have that in normal hat stores. The problem is that women's hats max out at a much lower size... and are much less likely to have hat sizes beyond "one size fits all."

Ozymandias ayon kay ...

To Skeptical Voter

The problem is that the dog is back-lit--the glare from the floor on the upper right of the picture is causing the camera's auto exposure to close the lens, so the dog's face is under exposed. Same as with your white background.

BTW, thanks for the tip on the Big Hat Store (size 8).

I assume this is an open thread.
And here is the place to leave articles about experts who now say lockdowns were/are a bad idea.

Maybe Germans in Left-leaning papers have opinions that matter.
As a Deplorable I am to be disregarded.

Is this Zeus? Second question: what is re-closenning?

Grant ayon kay ...

I had to go to a hatmaker in NYC to get a hat that would fit (7-7/8 or 8, depending on how enraged I am). I did discover a vendor on Amazon that sold a baseball cap that works OK, but it’s right snug. Didn’t know about the Big Hat Store, but NYC is a lot closer than San Diego so I reckon I did good enough.

After reading the impenetrable title and gazing at the impenetrable pools of darkness, I decided I was viewing a photo of the Wicked Witch coming back to seize an oversized Toto. Prove me wrong.

Great photo! Love the direction of the gazes: Hip-beatnik looking at the black canine looking adoringly at the guy behind the camera.

Black is Beat, indeed.

That's a huge noggin!
