May 2, 2020

The pro-Biden talking point was the NYT did an investigation and found the Tara Reade allegations to be false.

So it's especially inconvenient that The Editorial Board of the New York Times is saying "Investigate Tara Reade’s Allegations/Americans deserve to know more about a sexual assault accusation against the likely Democratic Party nominee."
Last year, this board advocated strongly for a vigorous inquiry into accusations of sexual misconduct raised against Brett Kavanaugh when he was nominated to a seat on the Supreme Court. Mr. Biden’s pursuit of the presidency requires no less. His campaign, and his party, have a duty to assure the public that the accusations are being taken seriously. The Democratic National Committee should move to investigate the matter swiftly and thoroughly, with the full cooperation of the Biden campaign....

In his statement, Mr. Biden said that if such a document existed, there would be a copy of it in the National Archives, which retains records from what was then the Office of Fair Employment Practices... Later on Friday, after the National Archives said it did not have personnel documents....

Any serious inquiry must include the trove of records from Mr. Biden’s Senate career that he donated to the University of Delaware in 2012..... Any inventory should be strictly limited to information about Ms. Reade and conducted by an unbiased, apolitical panel, put together by the D.N.C. and chosen to foster as much trust in its findings as possible.... No relevant memo should be left unexamined....
There's no mention in the editorial of the way the NYT was used by so many Biden supporters, who claimed that the NYT had done an investigation and absolved Biden.

IN THE COMMENTS: The Editorial Board speaks of "an unbiased, apolitical panel, put together by the D.N.C. and chosen to foster as much trust in its findings as possible," which prompted Roger Sweeny to say: "'Unbiased, apolitical panel' and put together by a political party do not go together."

But, you know, it makes sense to me. Who can believe in such a thing as "an unbiased, apolitical panel" in the first place? They don't arrive from Planet Neutralia. Are you going to find a neutral panel to appoint the neutral panel? Where do you start?! The Editorial Board puts the burden to pick the panel on a political entity with a huge political stake, and sets it up for our political judgement by announcing the standard that must be met: It's supposed to be "an unbiased, apolitical panel... chosen to foster as much trust in its findings as possible." Why would the DNC meet that standard? The reason is stated right there, and it's a political reason: the interest in getting us to trust the outcome.

Now, I wonder who could be chosen who could perform the task. We're told that the Biden archive at the University of Delaware arrived in the form of "nearly 2,000 boxes and more than 400 gigabytes of data" and that "most of it has not been cataloged." The Reade incident is alleged to have occurred in 1993: Was that the gigabytes era or the paper-in-boxes era? Who are the hyper-trustworthy, unbiased and apolitical investigators who can and will handle a project like that and do it quickly enough to work on the election time line? That's the problem I see. How is the DNC supposed to find people like that?!

ADDED: To state the problem is to see the real solution. This "unbiased, apolitical panel" — if anything like it could be convened — cannot get a creditable search done within a satisfying time line. Therefore: Biden needs to withdraw.

Plus a special "literary justice" provision that would allow former senator Biden's fellow Democrats to stab him to death in the cloakroom of the US Senate.

I'm tired of the Tara Reade story already. Though it certainly appears lightyears more credible than Ford v Kavanaugh, it was almost 3 decades ago, and I don't think we can effectively glean the truth and judge the behavior from way-back-when from this 2020 cultural vantage point. Well- you don't start with the New York Times, which, let's face it, on it's best days is still regarded as one of the most biased news organizations on the planet. By any objective standard, this should cease being referred to as the paper of record. It gives Dems an invisible blanket to run under when lights are being shone their way. It doesn't make the truth go away, but it makes Dems believe they are under a secure blanket of 'special truth'.

Instead of poring through boxes and boxes of files and docs, they should just use the Dems process for Kavanaugh. Find some scatter-brained current professor (that should not be difficult) who is willing to claim that she knew Joe when he was a teenager and back then he raped her at a party. No witnesses needed. She does not even need to prove that she and Joe even met as kids, or if they did, she does not even have to prove that Joe was at that party. The Times and the networks loved that story before. They should love it again.

It’s an empty commodity they’ve already consumed.

How about the DNC plus RNC assemble a panel of equal parts Dems and Republicans?

Look- time is getting short now. The Dems know that, at some point, Joe Biden will have to start speaking in front of cameras and crowds again. So the time is now to start the process wherein they can come to Joe either before, or at the convention, and say, 'Sorry Joe. But you can't do this. We'll find some nice spot for you to hold in the party as Chief Wizened One, or something like that. But we're going to have to go with Hillary." Or Andrew. Or...someone yet to get them excited.

Fuck you rape apologizing cucks. Biden is obviously guilty and needs to be outed and DQ'ed from the nomination.

According to the American Medical Association (1995), sexual violence, and rape in particular, is considered the most under-reported violent crime.[1] Common reasons for individuals not reporting crime include fear of not being believed, insecurity, and fear of getting into trouble. These reasons are most common for not reporting rape.[2] It is commonly assumed that most of the rape cases go unreported;[3] some estimates go up to or above 90%.[4][5] (See also Rape reporting.) Non-recognition of domestic violence may lead to under-reporting.

It's not a big deal. One country takes over another, the soldiers rape all the women, which pisses off their husbands, but they all go on with life.

It's a cultural thing about learned helplessness, as if feminine modesty were real rather than imagined.

It's bad being mugged too, but you just report it to the police and move on.

Explain how a raped vagina is worse than a damaged knee. The latter leaves you with a painful limp and corrective surgery. The former is people getting weepy.

In the new feminist world the least you'd expect is that there would be nothing special about vaginas except for a hygiene problem which you don't have with knees and elbows.

Police report or nothing. A police report at least indicates a single-mindedness that supports that it's against the woman's will, not something she changed her mind about later. Then you get a normal assault charge.

If, as you said earlier, it didn't happen or it wasn't against a woman's will if she didn't file assault charges, that's wrong. Just as you can get beat up and get your knee blown out against your will and not report it to the police. Doesn't mean you wanted it, and it doesn't mean it didn't cause damage.

HOWEVER, the more the way that Biden and his team respond, the more it looks like he is guilty or that his team thinks he's guilty. As for Demented Joe himself, I would not be surprised if he could honestly say that he has no recollection of such a thing happening -- mostly because he's demented, but maybe also because the incidents all run together at some point.

Certainly there was a culture of I'm-above-the-law sexual harassment in Congress at that time.

A Scenario
This was a supporter of the Democratic party who underwent an ugly, unprovoked assault by an important Senator but she hesitated to damage his career and the Democrats. She probably heard a lot of other stories and realized they would come out if she spoke up. Biden in the story is behaving like Bob Packwood and Bill Clinton of the same era and I'm sure there were others. So she held back in 1993. Now she speaks up. Why? She isn't an idealistic young woman, any more but she knows such women still keep growing up and still keep coming to Washington (and Hollywood) and are still being assaulted in ugly, brutal ways. What Biden is alleged to have done was not sex or sex that didn't work. It was mean and ugly and a lot like Clinton and Packwood of the same era. I'm sick of reading this vile stuff and I quite understand that someone else might be sick of remembering and sick of hearing that Biden hadn't changed and sick of watching him talk about how he supports feminism and sick of watching women struggle to be his VP and sick of watching them cover for him - as she did once. And then she thinks (or is told), Biden isn't a good candidate for the Democrats anyhow. Biden leaving because the Dems are good feminists is better than Biden staying and wearing down from the stresses of the campaign into a shaky, bewildered, pathetic man trying to debate Donald John Trump who is accustomed to mincing up young fake-reporters as a pre-lunch snack. So she makes her move.

@rhardin and a few others are on a different astroplane!

We are gauging this alleged grope in the context of the political season. Obviously, Biden won't be arrested or go to jail, just as Kavanaugh or Thomas or Al Franken wasn't arrested or sent to jail.

(Although Ms. Reade felt strongly enough about it to recently file a DC Police Report. Let's see it!)

This is pure politics. If enough people believe Reade, and believe Biden did it, then he's toast. A slight majority did not believe Anita Hill, so Thomas survived. Ditto Kavanaugh.

Juanita Broaddrick never got a fair hearing, until 2016, when she helped nail Hillary.

So, Yes, Ms. Reade could be lying, but why? What does she have to gain 27 years after the fact? Why would she insert herself into the 2020 presidential campaign? She's not a Republican, seeking to sink an ideological opponent. Is she a diehard Bernie gal? Let's hear her story - -not on a podcast, but on national tv.

We've heard from Slow Joe, who mumbled through it, and denied it, but to many folks it didn't seem too convincing. Especially his babbling about the "records" of his former Senate office. His track record is not good. Videos show him going full creepy-touchy, with women and young girls. 7 other women have said he gets handsy-pantsy -- not me saying it, but the Huffington Post.

Let's get Ms. Reade on 60 Minutes with Lara Logan, hear her story, who she told about it, why she didn't report it to the police way back when, evaluate it, and compare it to Slow Joe's story.

This is simple. Hear both sides, as my grandma used to say......

Not sure I agree that it is shit. I think it is more a glossing over of the real question. We cannot, at this point, know whether it happened or not, but if she filed a contemporaneous report and he denied it, and there were no witnesses, we still cannot know whether it happened or not. The real question is, what do we do in the situation where we necessarily do not and cannot know what actually happened? Two corollaries to this - do we threat the criminal aspects differently than the non-criminal (i.e., beyond a reasonable doubt for a conviction but less proof required to change our minds about voting for the guy), and do we apply the same standard to differently-situated people (e.g., D perp v. R perp, status of the accuser, etc.)?

This is a win/win for Republicans. Which is why they are blind to the opportunity.

This whole business of papers being “donated’ and “curated” and “sealed” deserves further scrutiny.

Are papers/records really “donated” to a nonprofit if the donor can still maintain complete control over them ?

Are papers/records (other than purely personal) that have been prepared using taxpayers resources really the property of the politician donor ?

Once delivered to the donee for “curation” what, if any, obligation does the “curator” have to timely, accurately and completely catalog the donation ?

Are the “donated” records/papers really “sealed” if the donor and/or his/her designated agents can root through as yet un-curated records ?

Who other than the donor can specify which agents can be granted access to the “sealed” records before they’ve been completely “curated ?

Can the donor choose, post-donation, to demand that selected records (and any/all copies) be returned and the donee records cleansed of any record of receipt ?

If the records are not actually “sealed” why does the donee organization describe them as such ?

If there are actual laws that grant elected politicians the rights to maintain effective control over the timely release of their taxpayer-funded records why isn’t there a plain language explanation of same in the announcement of the “donation” ?

This is not me calling for Biden to withdraw: " To state the problem is to see the real solution. This "unbiased, apolitical panel" — if anything like it could be convened — cannot get a creditable search done within a satisfying time line. Therefore: Biden needs to withdraw."

That's me analyzing what other people must be thinking. I'm an observer, and I'm trying to predict what might come next or infer what not being said.

I don't call on people to withdraw or anything like that.

I didn't call on Trump to withdraw. If you're reading something I said to mean that, you're talking about the inside of your own head.

Some people thought I called on Kavanaugh to withdraw after I heard the Blasey Ford testimony. That was a misreading of me. I was trying to imagine what he could do if and only if he knew he was guilty.

Maybe I have somewhere in this archive called on somebody to withdraw or resign. It's hard to think of what that would have been.

The lady with the bumper stickers at the dog park.....but I repeat myself......doesn't have a Biden bumper sticker yet.

In fact, no one does.

@ARM sez:

"Actually predicting that Trump will lose. I think he could lose to a turnip at this point"

Yeah, but that's bit dodgy for a reasonable fella. A turnip isn't running in the Fall, it will be Joe Biden, right?

And, again, how confident are in this prediction?

For example, I think Trump will prevail this Nov, but I am not too confident. I think it's slightly more than 50-50.

This is not me calling for Biden to withdraw:

Then you'd better clarify it in your post, before the Biden minions see it.

It would be very dignified of Biden at some point in the future to have a big speech about Mild Cognitive Impairment, how it affects lives, and how he and those around him have noticed signs of it in him. Withdraw, ask for support of the new nominee, and vow to do all he can to find cures and treatments for dementia and Alzheimers.

But withdrawing for a sex abuse allegation he denies and can't be proven is a bad road, and makes the Democrats look bad. Be honest about his health situation and move forward.

ARM is predicting the Presidential race outcone when he is still very unclear on where the ChiCom/WHO Wuhan Lab Bat Flu came from.

Here's a hint ARM: it came from China-Wuhan region-laboratory.

Is that still too vague for you?

Meanwhile, is it time to dredge up the ARM 2016 Trump Has No Path To 270 posts yet?

Too soon?

Too brutal?

How about the ARM's Trump Wont Finish His Term posts?

Too much?

Okay. Ill let it rest for a bit.

Good news dems!

"You can't make this stuff up. According to the Atlantic, Biden is counting on "the media," particularly the NYT, to "do the work of exonerating him." https://t.co/dE2pEr848J https://t.co/7rrsN5UqQa

Hooray for our brave and courageous and totally objective Fire-fighter-like media!

Everybody who thinks about it for a minute knows the panel won't be "unbiased and apolitical," but the party and the media will say that anyway and enough people will take their word for it that it won't matter. It's like Liz Warren being "cleared" by the Boston Globe. Everybody knows they weren't going to come to any other verdict, but Liz can say it and people who are voting for her anyway take it at face value. Another comparison may be to the Mueller investigation: an "unbiased" figurehead who just signs off on what staffers with their own agenda want.

Editorialists always live in a dream world. In this case, they think the days of "The Wise Men" and "The Best and the Brightest" are still around. If you were a banker or corporation lawyer who didn't automatically froth at the mouth when FDR was mentioned, you could have a job in Washington as an unbiased expert and Wise Man. Today people are too partisan and too polarized, and also too cynical or skeptical about just how unbiased members of the Establishment really are to fall for that.

Crazy Jane-
" 4. "I know women/girls who were sexually assaulted and didn't report it to the police. It happened. Going to the police over such a thing is a big huge deal." Sorry, no. If you've been sexually assaulted and you aren't white hot with rage, you're part of the problem. The bigger problem is getting the police to take these matters seriously."
Surely you know that being white hot with rage does not equal going to the police. Furthermore, I'm sure you can see what you describe as the bigger problem might be a cause for people not going to the police in the first place.

Let's all be honest here: a sitting US Senator - your boss!! who you like!- is often a little handsy and one day slips his fingers in your skirt. You push him off, you get away safely. You are a young political newby. He's a Senator. Are you 100% sure you'd go to the police with that?

There is not a single document. Rather Tara Reade by name and action are intertwined through a lengthy period of time, years and interacted with a substantial number of Biden staff and associates.

This means that Reade by name appears in hundreds of documents by tens of document authors and in person on audio and video files. This high quantity of documentation will be almost impossible to destroy without leaving huge apparent gaps.
