Your sunrise series is retail poster quality. Maybe "sleeve art" for Steven Halpern CDs.

Lakes, lakes, lakes. It's like you are returning to the scene of the crime and hinting about what you did with the bodies.

I recently noticed that sometimes there is green in sunsets. At least in some sunsets, where an intense blue meets the yellow and yellowy orange. It had been there all along, but my mind didn't register it.

"The Green Ray" is an optical phenomenon of the setting sun referred to in the novel by Jules Verne and film by Eric Rohmer.

The green flash and green ray are meteorological optical phenomena that sometimes occur transiently around the moment of sunset or sunrise. When the conditions are right, a distinct green spot is briefly visible above the upper rim of the Sun's disk; the green appearance usually lasts for no more than two seconds. Rarely, the green flash can resemble a green ray shooting up from the sunset or sunrise point.

You should consider working with Madison Parks Department to highlight your sunrise series as a work of public art that Madison can use with permission to showcase the seasonal moods of the Lake. You are making something that requires discipline and skill, and as a recent retiree and Emeritus Professor, this is the kind of role modeling from a wise elder that focuses on seeing the beauty in front of us, living in the present and getting up in time to see the sun rise!

As an amatuer photographer, I can relate to what you are doing. Your fierce neutrality and daily dedication to the Blog are impressive, and the photos reveal another facet that reflects a modern Stoic philosophical perspective that I see in your life and work.

Keep charging into life Ann!

Whatever happened to the daily COVID-19 briefing from Joe Biden's basement bunker?:

"News

Joe Biden to launch 'shadow' coronavirus briefings as Trump 'unfit to lead'

The Democratic presidential front-runner will stream briefings due to the president's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. The move follows multiple misleading statements by Trump, who until recently downplayed the threat.

Despite self-isolating at his home in Delaware, US presidential hopeful and former Vice President Joe Biden will on Monday begin giving "shadow" briefings on the coronavirus pandemic.

The news site Politico reports that the leading Democratic Party candidate for the White House has installed live streaming technology at his house to allow him to give regular updates on the health emergency."

Put each on a virtual calendar next year, matching photo to day of the year.

Hmm, suppose next year, AA may post current and past photos of each day for comparison.

One of the main take-aways from this Wuhan Virus mess is that China may be about to collapse. Why? China is beginning to devalue their currency; Companies are leaving China in swarms; China incurred record corporate bond defaults in 2019; Fitch, S&P and other rating agencies reported China's ratio of corporate debt to gross domestic product jumped to a record 160% [the mean for the West is 80%]; China's total non-financial sector debt, which includes household, corporate and government debt, will surge to almost 300% this year [USA at 106%] resulting in a spectacular blow up. It is a sure sign of massive problems.

Narr said...

@hstad makes a good point--several in fact. It will be interesting to see if the US/West can somehow throw the CCP a lifeline, as was done so often for the USSR and other foes.

In the interest of stability, doncha know.

The New York Times itself, the House Organ of the Democrat Party and ChiCom lovers everywhere, is forced to accept reality and take a flamethrower to 6 straight months of ARM's Beloved and Heroic People's Republic Of China ChiCom propaganda and lies:

"Global Backlash Builds Against China Over Coronavirus"

"As calls for inquiries and reparations spread, Beijing has responded aggressively, mixing threats with aid and adding to a growing mistrust of China."

Another rhetorical gut shot to ARM's Althouseblog reputation....which was already in tatters.

tsk tsk tsk

Drago said...

I see hstad covered the economics of the China situation above at 4:30pm.

These are the economic realities that the ChiCom propagandists like ARM have been denying for years since Trump effectively engaged China on all military, geo-political and economic fronts.

By the way, it is this Trump policy alone that has driven the entire Bush political clan fully into the arms of the dems. The Bushies were already about 70% along that path to begin with and Trump standing up and fighting for America pushed the Bushies the rest of the way in.

Ralph L: "If China goes bust, they may flood the world with even cheaper goods. Don't they hold a big chunk of USG debt?"

China's cheaper goods will have a real problem now given the new tariff situation and additional penalties that Trump enacted to even the playing field a bit. That was on top of new regulations and rules put in place to restrict the technology transfers from American companies to the ChiCom's and tougher enforcement against ARM's Beloved and Heroic ChiComs stealing our tech/data/info.

Not to mention shutting down the NAFTA loophole "backdoor" for ChiCom and EU products to slip into the US without tariffs via the USMCA deal.

And China owns about what, $1.2 to $1.5 or so of our total debt?

If we owe the ChiComs $100 Billion, we have a problem. If we owe the ChiComs $1.5 Trillion, in this current political environment, the ChiComs have a problem.

You need to increase your knowledge of the real China. Despite the propoganda pushed by Beijing, China is really not one united country. It's provinces are held together by the Chinese Army which was only build to control domestic issues. Moreover, each of the provinces are controlled by a general, who will not need to take direction from Beijing because of the collapse of the Central Government. Then you will have a bunch of warlords fighting each other to grab land. Interesting!

Maybe the Wuhan Flu is a flattening of the economic curves that are ahead for China. A sort of quantitative easing with people!

"The report also says China held off informing the World Health Organization that the coronavirus “was a contagion” for much of January so it could order medical supplies from abroad — and that its imports of face masks and surgical gowns and gloves increased sharply."

Poor, poor ARM.

I suspect the ChiComs very shortly will be shutting this latest propaganda effort down.

What will ARM do with all of his free time?

Neighbor says start a betting pool. Which state will be first to execute someone for being outside without a mask or after curfew?

Can't happen here, right?

Some macho guy laid off, stuck at home, drinking, begins feeling like a normal American and decides to go for a walk in the park unmasked with his woman. Cops hassle the man, embarrassing him in front of his lady. Man argues back and steps within six foot distance, potentially close enough to infect cops with most deadliest killer virus in history.

What's a cop gonna do? Run away or kill the guy, potentially saving thousands of innocents from being infected?

Fortunately, contrary to leftist opinion and propaganda, most cops are decent people.

China is in trouble, and it is becoming increasing hard for Apple, Google, Facebook, and the media to cover it up. China has been trying to bring Hong Kong back into the full totalitarian fold, and it isn't working. If they escalate, they will look even worse to the rest of the world. Despite a huge and expensive propaganda campaign, the rest of the world is beginning to realize that the chinese are imperialist, aggressive, and greedy for more power. The US press has so far provided all the cover they can for the communists, but I think, and hope, that they are failing to cover the mess up. american universities have bent over for millions of Communist dollars, and are looking pretty pathetic because of it.
They have a leader for life, or another Emperor. He is being held responsible for the thousands of deaths, the deportation and imprisionment of Muslims and other dissidents, as well as the failing economy. China has lied about its economic strength for decades, and Trump has shown the rest of the world that they are really a paper tiger.
If America stops buying what the ChiComs are selling, they go under.
Despite what the media and the other Chinese apologists may say, this is a desperate time for them.

This is for Shouting Thomas, if he's here:

Woodstock Occurred in the Middle of a Pandemic

Money Grafs:

Lifespan in the US in those days was 70 whereas it is 78 today. Population was 200 million as compared with 328 million today. It was also a healthier population with low obesity. If it would be possible to extrapolate the death data based on population and demographics, we might be looking at a quarter million deaths today from this virus. So in terms of lethality, it was as deadly and scary as COVID-19 if not more so, though we shall have to wait to see.

“In 1968,” says Nathaniel L. Moir in National Interest, “the H3N2 pandemic killed more individuals in the U.S. than the combined total number of American fatalities during both the Vietnam and Korean Wars.”

Today is apparently the fiftieth anniversary of the Kent State shootings. It doesn't seem to be getting much attention. It was a huge event to people of my generation, but now it registers as a blip....I watched part of a C-Span program with an author who wrote of the events. Obviously, it was a hideous and utterly wrong to shoot those kids, but it was a one off event contingent upon a lot of one off factors....I don't think it would be fair to characterize the anti-war movement on the basis of the actions of a few SDS psychos. It is just as wrong to characterize the anti-anti-war people on the basis of the actions of some panicked National Guardsmen.....There are a lot hard cases in this world that will never inspire a song by Crosby, Stills, and Nash.

Unfortunately there is not a lot of alternatives for China in some product areas, for what people are willing to pay.
>China is in trouble

The arrogance that China is showing is creating a lot of blow back internationally. This may result in a leadership change. With how Xi Jinping has centralized power and built an incredible surveillance state, he may survive in office.

My guess is China is going to stop growing, the US is going to be more self sufficient in medical areas, and some manufacturing areas. And the US is going to stop allowing itself to be in unfair trade relations. And you are going to see a lot more deregulation. An example is the current meat potential shortages, is due to FDA requirements that favor large meat processing plants put in place in 1967, that took the authority away from states. So many farmers are forced to sell the large processors.

China has an amazing police state, which is beyond 1984 in a lot of ways. The social credit scheme is an example of soft coercion.

The shift in the overton window in the US on China is amazing. This will have major ramifications. China is now longer seen as somebody we should help, so this way they will become more like us. Now they are seen by the majority of the US, as a competitor, and arrogant.
