"Hackers have attacked the website of top showbiz attorney Allen Grubman, demanding $21 million while threatening to reveal personal details of his clients..."

"...including Elton John, Lady Gaga and Barbra Streisand.... One source said, “The hackers got into the system while everyone was focused on the coronavirus."... The law firm said in a statement: “We can confirm that we’ve been victimized by a cyberattack."... Musicians represented by the firm include Barry Manilow, Rod Stewart, Lil Nas X, The Weeknd, U2 and Drake. Other clients listed are Priyanka Chopra, Robert De Niro, Sofía Vergara, LeBron James and Mike Tyson."

The NY Post reported a few days ago. Today the story is: "Law firm hackers double ransom demand, threaten Donald Trump"
On Thursday, the hackers upped the ante by posting a chilling new message saying, “The ransom is now [doubled to] $42,000,000 … The next person we’ll be publishing is Donald Trump. There’s an election going on, and we found a ton of dirty laundry on time.”

They added, “Mr Trump, if you want to stay president, poke a sharp stick at the guys, otherwise you may forget this ambition forever. And to you voters, we can let you know that after such a publication, you certainly don’t want to see him as president … The deadline is one week....”
Trump was never a client of this law firm... and who cares about a ton of dirty Trump laundry? He's pre-dirtied in the laundry department. No one cares.

Lizzie Grubman's dad is having a bad day, but it's not as bad as Lizzie's worst day ever.

Earnest Prole म्हणाले...

Isn't The Onion laying it on a little thick with an agent named "Grubman"?

daskol म्हणाले...

That's a hilariously amateurish ransom note and ransom escalation. It's not right to laugh at this, as it's still a violation if the target is a celebrity, but the Grubman part makes it hard. Real hard.

Danno म्हणाले...

Sucks to be showbiz people. At least they are not being tarred and feathered or being bet on in dead pools.

Expat(ish) म्हणाले...

@daskol - I’d forgotten that.

I expect this sort of hacking and data threat goes on a lot. Most firms do not protect their data very well.

Luckily most data is boring. And if a disgruntled tax clerk asks for $100kmfrom her CPA firm on leaving, well, that’s easy to pay and not cops needed.

Who is "Lizzie Grubman" and why is her surname name funny? Asking for a friend.

I suspect that by threatening the President, they've opened up a whole new level of shit to come down on them.

I believe it was Huey Long who said that they only way he could lose an election was if he was caught in bed with a dead woman or a live boy. What are they going to reveal? The Donald slept with porn actresses? A playboy bunny? Has been married three times!

Krumhorn म्हणाले...

It’s hilarious for Grubman to maintain that his is the top entertainment law firm in the world. I’m pretty sure that a number of others such as Ziffren Brittenham or Sloan Offer or Hansen would easily shove him off that perch.

“The hackers got into the system while everyone was focused on the coronavirus."

Who is so focused on the coronavirus that they can't attend to their actual jobs? I'm picturing the IT department of this firm staring at the news on their phones while their computer screens erupt unnoticed. That's stupid.

And you're right, they have nothing on Trump. They calculated that this would get them more press, turning up the heat on the appropriately named "Grubman."

Tim Maguire, that is indeed a funny line. Yeah. Someone was bored at home and clicked a link they shouldn't have.
But now I know why NPR was covering ransom ware attacks yesterday.
It's a funny thing, isn't it, the car radio. It seems so odd to still have something where you can miss the beginning of a story and not be able to rewind or re-listen. I usually listen to podcasts on apple car play when I drive, but yesterday I went out without a phone.

If it was my law firm, I might make up the second threat to motivate the government to help.

But I would also say there was a ton of dirt on Hillary. The next day you'd read in the papers that the hackers had committed suicide.

Shane म्हणाले...

Allen Grubman says there is a "Ransom demand"? Does he represent the Asian Red Dawn too?
Where could he have gotten this idea? Grubman has parlayed his brother, Hans' celebrity ever since he fell off the Nakatomi Building to his death back in 1987, into this celebrity niche lawyering. His business, like most, has probably dried up and this is a ploy for attention.

The whole thing stinks.

Sebastian म्हणाले...

"He's pre-dirtied in the laundry department."

Actually, pre-cleansed in the trash and waste department. No one has been attacked more by MSMers and deep-staters eager to bury him in dirt, and yet come out unscathed--while having had his administration hamstrung, of course.

Howard म्हणाले...

LOL!

Sorry but unless you video of Trump in bed with 3 dead hookers or three live under-age boys AND Wine-box Nancy, I can't think of anything that would be on a media lawyer's web site that would bother Trump supporters enough to cause them to stay home. They absolutely would not vote for whatever "golden child" replaces Biden. So let it rip!

J Severs म्हणाले...

I do not think it all adds up. Doubling the demand to $42M to prevent release of damaging info for Trump? I am guessing most of the stars are liberal and would welcome release of such information, if it exists. Instead of extortion, which is a crime, the hackers should be offering a deal, "$42M for damaging info on Trump".

Speaking from 40 years experience in IT, I can tell you that the professions are generally awful about computer security. They all think they're too important to be bothered with shit like that.

I'd really like to read an honest analysis what happened here & what route the hackers used to penetrate their defenses.

Leland म्हणाले...

I'm curious what they could release about Elton that wasn't in the movie? Oh no, he has drug fueled orgies where he gives oral sex to men. Yeah, but did you know that after the hangover, he hits Rodeo Drive for a $10,000 shopping spree? Really, just $10,000?

William म्हणाले...

Any chance that this is an elaborate deceit played by someone in the Grubman organization to give cover to leaking whatever damaging information they know about Trump?....Why not start with a few tasty tidbits about some cherished celebrity before moving up?

Big Mike म्हणाले...

@Ralph, anyone so lacking in good taste to boink Streisand, public or private doesn’t matter, I don’t know whether someone like that belongs in the Oval Office.

Meanwhile, every other agent in town is getting some variation of this incident pitched to them as a screenplay.

I'd go with the heist comedy version, myself. Picture one bandit glancing at note cards as he tries to record the ransom video --

Bandit 1: "Give us $20 million by Friday, or we'll blow the lid off of ... Barry Manilow? You stole the files of Barry Manilow?"

Bandit 2: "My mother loves him! She says she danced to 'Mandy' at her wedding. This'll totally tick her off!"

#metoo; if it were true, then this wouldn't be possible (though perhaps it's not true, considering the source):

"They also deleted or encrypted the firm’s backups."
because the backups would be in a different physical location and not connected to a network.

The entire US news media.
The entire international news media.
The Democratic Party oppo research machinery.
The Republican Party oppo research machinery.
The FBI
The CIA
Every other branch of US intelligence.
Every foreign intelligence agency
The Mueller Investigation
All the private investigations and private revelations that could be bought by Bloomberg, Tom Steyer, George Soros, et al.
All those, plus every bong smoking, hacky-sack kicker with an internet connection, have not only peeled Trump's onion, they've chopped it to a fine pulp for at least the last 4 years.

How much undiscovered dirt could there possibly be?

Wince म्हणाले...

Murdock-owned NY Post says DJT was never a client of the Grubman law firm but no independent news source outside of this Trump-friendly source has confirmed it. "[Unnamed] Sources told Page Six that Trump had never been a client of the firm."

As for who cares? You know I always cheer for the Good Guys and Trump is not a member of that team.
