The gentlest sunrise.

You have to imagine the sound of loons.

Even softer...

The time was 6:48 on a morning when the "actual" sunrise time was 6:29.

I don't need to imagine the sound of the loons. Pretty much any TV news source will provide it.

Man...you've had some beautiful photographs the past week. Nature is playing nice with you this week. Spring in Madison seems to offer a variety of striking looks.

When I mentioned, in another thread, the great music on the 1960's Zulu movie's soundtrack I meant the Zulus, not the boring John Barry stuff you'll find on youtube.

Here's some Zulu music.

A Progressive Media Group Demanded Censorship of Trump's Coronavirus Press Briefings. The FCC Said No.

-Reason

Free Press (that's the actual name of the progressive media group) petitioned the FCC to punish news outlets for airing Trump's press conferences.

The complaint cites two major issues:

-Trump touts the dangerous drug hydrochloroquine, resulting in the death of a Arizona man.

-Trump's lies result in a 'cavalier attitude' among Americans, causing more death.

Speaking of loons...

Eggemoggin Reach

Light comes early
To surround the high room
Where we half-dream

In morning fog
On which is etched
Merely the guess of things

A near branch
Might just carry
The weight of birds

But steps away
Water and air are one
Blind white glass

Without depth
Or direction
Until the loon calls

World banking system cannot weather a long lockdown

Some quotes:

The St Louis Fed warns that 47 million workers could be laid off in short order, pushing the unemployment rate to 32pc.

Early results from the Italian bio-lab Meleam shows that 38pc of all Italians tested randomly for antibodies across nine regions have been exposed to the virus already. If validated, the disease has spread far more widely than supposed. The death rate is therefore very low.

But if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Meleam’s sample size is 1,731 cases. There have been big problems with the accuracy of serological antibody tests even in countries with highly-sophisticated life-sciences industries.

From the British Medical Journal: Covid-19: four fifths of cases are asymptomatic, China figures indicate

Paraphrasing: since April 1 China has been posting data on the number of new cases that are asymptomatic. So far it has been 80%.

Of course, if we take the Chinese data at face value, it seems impossible to reconcile the extremely low number of new cases they are reporting with predictions of mass casualties.

Something doesn't add up.

Peter Falk and Arthur Kennedy as Italian soldiers in Russia in WWII. I saw it as "Attack and Retreat" on the late show when I was a kid, but it was released in Italy as The Brave Men.

Big Italo-Russian coproduction, with thousands of cheap conscript extras and some big set pieces as I recall.

I got to Sam's at 7 and had to wait in line outside for an hour. There was no TP left before I even got in (not desperate yet) and no cleaners and disinfectants either (ditto). I got twice what I usually do of the other things-- and as soon as I got home my wife was telling me that we're being urged to shop for two weeks, not one, and stay home!

From the Center for Evidence-Based Medicine It's ascertainment bias

Quote:

"If you test, test, test you will find. [3] Epidemics are no strangers to ascertainment bias. In the spring of 1918 military censorship ensured that most information relating to a mysterious acute respiratory syndrome was suppressed. Except for places like Spain which had not joined the war and had no censorship. So selective release of information made it look like most cases came from the Iberian peninsula – hence the name “Spanish flu”."

"Technospeak notwithstanding, there can be little doubt that Covid 19 may be far more widely distributed than some may believe. At the time the first symptomatic case was diagnosed In Vo Euganeo, Italy, about 3% had already been infected – most were asymptomatic. [4]"

"Changing the emphasis from hospitals to the community could avert a disaster for the wider population. Care in the home setting restricts movements of the infected. All those with a fever and a cough should stay at home; they could be prescribed pulse oximeters, and oxygen could be delivered to severely affected cases; rescue antibiotics prescribed along with daily video-monitoring could be used to detect deterioration. In the older population, the mildly ill and the recovering, food supplies should be delivered at home."

"Lockdown is going to bankrupt all of us and our descendants and is unlikely at this point to slow or halt viral circulation as the genie is out of the bottle. What the current situation boils down to is this: is economic meltdown a price worth paying to halt or delay what is already amongst us?"

This crisis leaves me at a loss for words, so I’ve barely been commenting. I just hope people stay safe. With that being said, at this time I do appreciate the quality of the professor’s posts that we’ve been seeing for the most part. Althouse still continues to be my #1 news source.

I've always wondered about the dynamics of moderation. Do some topics trigger moderation?....or is it more like the State Patrol speed traps on the interstate?

Trigger.....I don't think I've used that word in a sentence since Roy Rodgers died!!

Semi-related:

The pop culture channels on Youtube seem to all be convinced now that if they mention the corona virus as the cause for why some movie was delayed or why all comics are cancelled, they will be demonitized. They all talk around it. It's weird, and troubling.

Is the fog rolling in or clearing out or static (is fog ever static?)?

These are photos I would call ethereal, haunting, maybe sad. Beautiful nonetheless.

"Attack and Retreat"????

Really? I would hardly call that a big "war epic."

And when have either Peter Falk or Arthur Kennedy "been mentioned several times recently"??

Mark म्हणाले...

"Attack and Retreat" -- In fact, if more than ten people outside Italy saw it, I would be surprised.

Spaghetti war movies don't count.

OK, call it what you want. That's my memory and I'm sticking to it. Big river-crossing scene, lots of Katyushas and fleeing Nazis. It's entirely possible there were longer and shorter cuts, also. IDK.

I said the actor's iconic TV character had been mentioned (that would be Det. Colombo) and he had--in threads you were on, IIRC. I had forgotten Kennedy myself, and thought it interesting when I looked the movie up on IMDB--two b-list Americans who were given chances for international stardom in a vehicle like that.
