"It’s very hard for a person to quarantine in a home and other people not to get infected. To do it in a home where a person is bringing you dishes, bringing you food, even if they’re wearing a mask and gloves, that virus can live on some surfaces up to two days."

Said Governor Andrew Cuomo, expressing empathy for his brother and sister-in-law, quoted in "'It just breaks my heart': Chris Cuomo says his wife, Cristina, has coronavirus, too," published in The Washington Post, which makes no mention of the incident over the weekend in which Chris Cuomo and his family were enjoying the outdoors together on beachfront real estate that did not even include a house — let alone a room where Chris could have been doing the kind of quarantine Andrew was talking about.

I can't believe Governor Cuomo is not aware of that news, published prominently in multiple articles in the New York Post. Why is Andrew risking his credibility to cover for his brother?!

Because Andrew is enamored with his newfound national presence. He doesn't have to think about what he says. He's got people cooing about him because he does not sound like Trump. And let's face it. That is refreshing- if even for just a moment.

Cuomo wears off, though. Reality tends to settle in.

He's his little brother! Why does Biden cover for his son even though it undermines his credibility? He's his son! And they love their family.

That said, I think Korea studied this and found masks were quite effective in reducing spread to other family members. There's probably a lot of confounding variables, though, since someone who wears masks consistently even at home is also probably being extra careful, e.g. eating meals separately, wiping down handles and surfaces, etc.

Re: Cuomo's national presence -- it's kind of bizarre because the whole reason he's on the news all the time is that New York's response was exceptionally bad, even compared to Western Europe. A lot of that was DeBlasio and New York City, but Cuomo didn't make great choices early on either. Contrast with California, which had community spread earlier than New York, but state business leaders and municipalities and eventually the state government responded reasonably well. They're a hotspot, but they've avoided the kind of disaster we see in NY. No one is airing press conferences with Newsom, though, because he didn't screw up and there's nothing to discuss. Cuomo's interesting because of the drama of a heroic response to a desperate crisis. But there probably wouldn't be a crisis if New York were a little more competent.

Chris Cuomo & family are reported to be staying nearby in South Hampton in what is called "the family home" in various accounts.

The home does not belong to the family, it belongs to a specific person.

Could we know who that is, please?

I suppose it could belong to some kind of family trust or such. Might we know that if it does?

Fredo's family was a lot safer, well, less likely to catch the cooties, with him on the beach than they would've been at home:

"Home outbreaks were the dominant category (254 of 318 outbreaks; 79.9%), followed by transport (108; 34.0%; note that many outbreaks involved more than one venue category). Most home outbreaks involved three to five cases. We identified only a single outbreak in an outdoor environment, which involved two cases. Conclusions: All identified outbreaks of three or more cases occurred in an indoor environment, which confirms that sharing indoor space is a major SARS-CoV-2 infection risk."

Chris Cuomo is an obvious ass, and not becuase of COVID, but being on the beach with his family has nothing to do with the transmission. They live in the same house sharing everything including the air. His wife likely caught it soon after he did and before anyone knew Chris had it, including Chris. She may even have had it first. Andrew is right. It's pretty hard to avoid sharing the virus if you live in the same house, and with hotels not available, you don't really have much choice, unless you have multiple houses. Living together inside structures is what our species does, it's how we have built everything. Another reason why I like being alone.

Uh-Oh -- the MIT boys are looking at the NY subways as a vector of transmitting Covid-19. MIT study: Subways a ‘major disseminator’ of coronavirus in NYC

Money Quote: "“New York City’s multitentacled subway system was a major disseminator — if not the principal transmission vehicle — of coronavirus infection during the initial takeoff of the massive epidemic,” argues Harris, who works as a physician in Massachusetts."

Wait a minute. Counter-factual -- until 2 months ago, didn't the NY subways have 5.4 MILLION riders per day and 1.7 BILLION RIDERS per year? For more than 100 years?

That's a lotta strangers in close quarters. Some with vaccines, someone without. Some sick some not. Some with illnesses, you'll never know about.

Ain't the NYC subways "a major disseminator" of all types of germs and bugs -- for almost 100 years?

And, yet, no major outbreaks from 1918 Spanish Flu to 2019 ChiCom Flu?

Hmmm. Trying to put 2 and 2 together............

Maybe Chris is a natural-born free-range person or a "one health" follower. "One health" comes up in the article "Origin and evolution of pathogenic coronaviruses."

"Origin and evolution of pathogenic coronaviruses" is an article by the Director of the Wuhan Lab that some say carelessly caused the current pandemic. There is no proof for this.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7097006/ "Origin and evolution of pathogenic coronaviruses"

US/Chinese Funding of Wuhan Lab
The work at the Wuhan Lab is jointly funded by the Chinese and the US governments as can be seen in the acknowledgements section of the article "Origin and evolution of pathogenic coronaviruses." The section of the US government doing the funding of the Wuhan workers is NIH/NIAID which has been led by Dr. Fauci since 1984. The effort was to get ahead of the corona virus before it caused a pandemic which, we can easily see now, was a good idea. It would be ironic if that effort caused the outbreak due to carelessness.

"This work [on the origin and evolution of the coronavirus (which is said to be increased contact with bats)] was jointly funded by the Strategic Priority Research Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (XDB29010000), the National Natural Science Foundation of China (31621061) and the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Institute of Allergy and Infection Diseases (R01AI110964) to Z.-L.S*; NIH grants (R01AI089728 and R01AI110700) to F.L.;"
from https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7097006/ "Origin and evolution of pathogenic coronaviruses"
[* Z-LS is Zheng-Li Shi, the head of the Wuhan lab.]

Takeaway from the article.
"It is widely accepted that many viruses have existed in their natural reservoirs for a very long time. The constant spillover of viruses from natural hosts to humans and other animals is largely due to human activities, including modern agricultural practices and urbanization. Therefore, the most effective way to prevent viral zoonosis is to maintain the barriers between natural reservoirs and human society, in mind of the ‘one health’ concept."

What Cuomo did going outside knowing that he is already ill, was totally irresponsible.

However, to be fair, it IS very hard to quarantine....or live together and not have others get sick. Even with a common cold, or a normal flu season.

When you live together, breath the same air, sleep together, use the same household items....it is impossible not to share germs. It is also impossible to know that you are infected until you show symptoms.

Often, one or the other of us will catch a cold or something and the other doesn't. Rarely do we both get 'sick' at the same time. RARELY do we even get sick at all.

We can't spend our lives cowering in fear that we might, maybe, possibly catch the virus or bacteria du'jour. We can be vigilant in our sanitation, avoid people who are sick.

AND face the reality that we really are not in control and may get ill no matter what we do.... or get crashed into by a loaded logging truck at some point in our lives (actual event). We can't stop living, stop going outside of our houses, driving our cars because shit happens.

That is not the issue. The issue is that infected Fredo, and his family, did not stay in place until he was done being sick and the other family members didn't come down with it. Which would include another 2 weeks of isolation (friend of mine had it for 2 weeks before being hospitalized for a week, and was told to isolate for another 2 weeks).

emphasis added by me.
I may be mistaken, and although the meaning can possibly be discerned from that text, the use of "unless" in that context would necessarily indicate that what follows will be an exception to something stated previously. The text then proceeds to add an additional requirement without specifying what that exception is (an additional requirement is not an exception to previous statements). Ambiguity in these matters is not proper. Again, I may be mistaken, but red flags went up when I first read that document with the intention of clearly understanding what I was reading (as a non lawyer).

Chris Cuomo is a public health MENACE, who should be LOCKED UP.

He's DEFIED quarantine; bullying random bike riders on the streets of Southhampton, all the while exposing everyone of us to his putrid disease.

He's not infected his wife.

His children are being abused (after all, he put them in a car with himself and drove around Southhampton yesterday.)

He should be arrested for intentionally spreading this deadly virus and exposing his poor family to it. If he's allowed to continue walking about freely, he'll likely pass this disease to his innocent children, perhaps killing them.

It's EASY to quarantine if you are a filthy rich millionaire. He could go rent an apartment, away from his family.

Instead, he's one-by-one infecting them. And the cops are allowing him to do it, putting two innocent children in harm's way in the process.

This guy deserves to be in a prison cell for violating a deadly disease quarantine.

Quarantines and lockdowns need voluntary compliance in order to be effective. Population density has a huge influence, but it's more than a coincidence that cities with a culture of celebrating defiance and throwing caution to the wind (NYC, NOLA) have struggled to contain infections. Chris Cuomo's following-rules-is-for-losers attitude is not atypical for NYC. I suspect that's probably part of the reason why European countries where following rules is ingrained in the culture (Germany, Poland, Norway) have done better at containing infections than countries with a prevailing attitude that rules are suggestions and compliance is optional (Italy, Spain, UK). And it shouldn't surprise anyone that entire households get infected once one person is infected during quarantine.

Now that Chris is ostensibly "out of the danger zone" and would otherwise be returning (not like he ever left, and that's a red flag re how ill he really ever was(n't)), they need a storyline for Season 2 of the CNN reality-TV show, "Chris Cuomo - the Coronavirus Diaries"; thus, now it's his wife's turn to be the story.

They will avoid glaring mistakes of the first season, such as the episode where Cuomo appeared on TV the morning following the night in which he'd been up past 3 a.m. while the 102-degree fever finally broke. In that episode, he appeared to be well-rested, full of energy, perfectly coiffed, showing no pallor or sluggishness of any kind, which made some eyebrows rise in suspicion. After all, anyone who's ever had a 102 fever knows that when you're up all night sweating through the peak, you still look and feel like a wooly-brained melted banana for much of the following day as you recover your hydration etc. and continue to convalesce. Cuomo showed none of those signs; in fact, he presented as perfectly healthy for much of the time he spent ostensibly afflicted with the killer virus.

With the wife as the story, she never has to appear on screen but Chris will nonetheless have great license to rhapsodize about her in his highschool quarterback delivery style, singing her praises and flogging the sympathy rolls to bring his thirsty audience along for every moment of the compelling family drama that is "Chris Cuomo - the Coronavirus Diaries".

THIS... is CNN.
