"... since the outbreak began.... If the immediate public-health challenge is still enormous, so is the task of preparing for a gradual reopening of the economy. The most detailed consideration of this subject I have seen comes from Germany... [T]he most striking thing about the German study is the list of things that it identified as necessary for such a policy to be successfully implemented.... The United States has none of these things. Despite widespread agreement among epidemiologists and economists that a massive increase in COVID-19 testing is urgently needed, it hasn’t been implemented yet. Although the over-all number of tests has ramped up, there is little consistency across states, which translates to huge uncertainty about the real rates of infection in different places.... One reason why the COVID-19 fatality rate in Germany is so low—less than two per cent—is that its universal health-care system provided widespread testing and high levels of care from the beginning... The German report pointed out that [reopening] would need to be explained clearly to the public in a way that was realistic and made explicit that the new policy didn’t amount to a return to 'business as usual.' Credible political leaders would need to 'appeal to common values and emphasize moral standards' and 'solidarity.' It would also help if the person communicating the policy 'acts as a "role model," i.e., a person who aligns his or her own behavior with the measures.' This reads like a definition of an anti-Trump...."
From "Trump’s 'Light at the End of the Tunnel' Is a Delusion" by John Cassidy (in The New Yorker). Beautiful photo by Chip Somodevilla — worth clicking of only for that.
Does the press have any responsibility for tearing down Trump's credibility right when we need it? I'd say they should be scrupulously careful not to do any of the ordinary political partisanship that had already badly infected journalism. There's a lot of ruined credibility out there. Everyone ought to be trying to crawl back toward the truth. I think Trump — in his daily briefings — has been "appeal[ing] to common values and emphasiz[ing] moral standards and solidarity." But the Trump-hating media will not help him do this. They're looking for ways to blame him, to worsen his credibility. Why not help?

Cassidy is now an expert epidemiologist as he was a Ukraine expert?
The Prime Minister was whipping up false hope in his speech today. The last time we fought on the beaches and in the hills and in the towns was in 1066, when we were conquered and partially enslaved by a stronger continental power. His speculations about Canada or Australia continuing the fight are baseless as well. Neither country has ever fought a war without England. His shameful hucksterism deserves censure.
"Why not help?"
Because it wouldn't help the Party. The nation maybe, but that's irrelevant.
Why not help? Apocalyptic virus be damned, there's an election to be won!
The left is really eager to destroy the economy, at least until the election, to get Trump.
What is needed is a new narrative. THAT is the most important thing. The narrative must be self-congratulatory, while acknowledging continued risk, offering a few truthy factoids as to why it's reduced now, and pointing out that we need people to get back to work. To be bi-partisan, it must permit Trump to claim success, and Democrats and their propagandists to claim he was a failure while sipping double-skinny vanilla lattes from their favorite Starbucks.
If Schadenfreude is delight in the misery of others, what's a good word for delight in one's own misery?
"Why not help?"
Because they are Leftists. In other words, they are the enemy of the people. Specifically, they want things to go badly so that they can seize more power and use it to limit other people's liberty, to thereby preserve and enhance their own positions at others' expense. While feeling virtuous and superior while doing so.
File under: "Things not to overthink".
It’s irresponsible for Trump to claim that better times can come before Dems take back the White House.
Why not help?
Because this is what their readers want. Trumpporn.
The New Yorker -- what a piece of shit. They, literally, would shut down the country and destroy the lives of millions of blue collar workers based on this viral snipehunt.
Numbers:
This year flu - 44,000 deaths. No lockdown. Source: CDC, 2019-2020 U.S. Flu Season: Preliminary Burden Estimates.
This year Covid-19 - 12,000 deaths. Shut down country.
ps. Before some idiot says, "it's not the flu!" -- yeah, I know that. But the symptoms are largely the same -- flu or pneumonia. See early paper Zhu et al.
"We report the results of this investigation, identifying the source of the pneumonia clusters, and describe a novel coronavirus detected in patients with pneumonia whose specimens were tested by the China CDC at an early stage of the outbreak. We also describe clinical features of the pneumonia in two of these patients
One reason why the COVID-19 fatality rate in Germany is so low — less than two per cent —is that its universal health-care system provided widespread testing and high levels of care from the beginning ...
Another reason is that Germany is populated mostly by Germans, a nation that is well-educated, disciplined, compliant, clean and healthy and that normally avoids physical contact.
Your conclusion is certainly true--this looks like just another exercise in wokring backwards from "Orange Man Bad." Germany's fatality rate only looks good in comparison to its neighbors. It's not much better than the US and is decidedly worse than some other countries.
The suggestion about developing and promoting a plan with specific requirements to lift the lockdown is a good one, but the needless phrasing of it not as something we should do, but as "Trump sucks for not already doing it," is tiresome and counterproductive.
The New Yorker has funny cartoons.
"Why not help?"
Because they hate Trump more than they love America. They would rather see more dead Americans because they can't use HCQ. They'd rather see more businesses bankrupted.
How else can you explain the Fake News pushing a senile old man to become President when he clearly isn't up for the job.
Question: Why are the libs fixated on testing? That's all they say. There must be a reason and I can't figure it out.
“Why not help?”
Because the news media is committed to the destruction of President Trump at all costs, repeat, at all costs.
Why?
The news media it’s committed to a progressive political agenda, and vehicle, the Democrat party, which it supports at all times, at any cost, including their own credibility and viability as an industry.
Even a NYer casual about fire hydrants will work in a swipe at Trump. It's amazing. Remnick is an asshat.
Angelo Codevilla, predicting the future.
Regardless of when Trump acts to reopen the country, they will do whatever is in their power to prevent him from exiting the path to political perdition which he has entered. They won’t give him a pass out of it, no matter what. Nothing that happens in April, or in May, June, or whenever, nothing that any curve does, will induce any of the ruling class to say, “OK, let’s all wash our hands, take precautions to protect the old and the obese, and get back to normal.”
Does it matter what Trump says or does?
If he spreads doom and gloom - the press will bury him.
If he offers hope - the press will bury him.

I have long thought he needs to cut the time for Q & A in half.
It's not doing anyone any good watching Trump swat gnats for a hour. Not to mention it gives the democrats a ton of fodder for the fall with selectively edited sound bytes.

“ Everyone ought to be trying to crawl back toward the truth.” Yes! For three years, Jordan Peterson traveled the globe trying to get that message out. Ordinary people have picked up the banner, but the media hasn’t gotten on board yet.
Just dig a hole, and put your head in it for the rest of your lives then. Geez. If it were up to Democrats, there would be 10's of thousands of more deaths, because they wouldn't have been RACIST enough to ban travel from Wuhan, where it originated.
I continue to suggest the VERY readable "The Arsenal of Democracy: FDR, Detroit, and an Epic Quest to Arm an America at War" by A. J. Baime.
https://www.amazon.com/Arsenal-Democracy-Detroit-Quest-America-ebook/dp/B00FJ5EPVG
Completely readable and contains a surprising amount of detail on the shift from war->civilian production in 1944. Yes, a year before the war was over.
I suspect a lot of lessons there that would be handy today.

Holman W. Jenkins Jr. had an interesting op ed piece in today's Wall Street Journal. Here are some quotes worth pondering:
"For what it's worth, my assessment of the Trump political character: Its defining feature is his colossal and thorough cynicism about the game of politics and the people who play it. When he hears himself called a racist or a traitor he rolls his eyes and thinks: I can play this game better than these schlemiels because I don't deceive myself about the moral character of what I'm doing.
And guess what? He has a point. I might even say he's the moral superior of some of his critics.
In the Columbia Journalism Review, a writer recently criticized MSNC not for opposing Mr. Trump reflexively but for doing so stupidly--in ways that have benefitted Mr. Trump. It's a line of inquiry that deserves to be pursued.
Our world reveals itself through paradoxes. A president who does a fair impression of Pinocchio has been the vehicle for exposing the media's own mendacity. A president rightly criticized for trafficking in conspiracy theories was the victim of one himself---and not promoted by a solitary guy with a Twitter account, but by the nation's media, law enforcement and political institutions."
For what it's worth, I think Jenkins is being too kind to the media. And for a bit of amusement, Jenkins notes that one of Biden's campaign officials joked that Biden's rejection of an endorsement by James Comey probably netted Biden 10,000 votes. That's gotta smart for the Sainted James Comey, the only honest man in Washington D.C.--or so Comey will tell you.

Did you hear Trump's comments yesterday about the Wisconsin election?
I didn't hear a lot of solidarity and common values. He stated that Evers decided to change the election date because of Trump's tweeted endorsement of Kelly.
I suppose you want to blame his answer on the person who asked the question?
Not a lot of unification in his response yesterday.
They should work harder at reestablishing a modicum of integrity and trust to the Institution of Journalism. The “everything Trump does is wrong” school is stupid and just erodes what small reserve of trust their so-called “profession” has. Really. Going on a JIHAD against HCQ only because Trump touted it is a perfect example. Half the questions to Trump are versions of “aren’t you responsible for” a bad thing that happened because you said X?
Pitiful. Welcome to post-post-truth America, where our Elite suddenly reverse 50 years of trying to convince us there is no real truth, only differing perspectives and opinions. Now with Trump it’s ALL ABOUT the truth being important. Right.
Any word on John Cassidy giving up his income during the shutdown to show solidarity with the rest of the country?
Trump: 'I'm a cheerleader'.
So was W.
Cheerleaders are not actual leaders.
Germany's "widespread testing" has tested less than half the total amount of people the US has tested. What a triumph for government healthcare.
Remember, Cassidy Is Much Smarter and Better Than You.
Does the press have any responsibility for tearing down Trump's credibility right when we need it?
Nope. The media never takes any responsibility for anything, ever.
D Begley:
Libs are fixated on testing because the absence of more early testing cannot possibly be fixed, and their speculation about how more early testing would “saved lives” cannot be falsified. One drawback is that early testing was stymied by bureaucrats at CDC and FDA, but they can write these off as part of the “Trump Administration “.
Why not help?
Helping provides no opportunities for self aggrandizement.
I predicted at the very begining, this virus was perfect to all sides to push their agenda using the availible statistic. I have seen come true multiple times a day.
A year from now no one is going to use the CFR, Case Fatality Rate.
Its meaningless, exactly because there is a huge variation by geography. Use deaths per million.
this is a good look at masks vs tests
This testing thing is a cudgel to swing at President Trump. No one has explained to me how testing changes the decision you make...up to this point. Good randomized testing to determine herd immunity, might be interesting, but still no info to base decisions on.
The phrasing in the German plan quoted in the article is horrible. It seems to be an openly stated operation to perform psyops on the people of Germany to subconsciously bend them to the will of the state. Tell people the truth, treat them like adults.
Hammer that Orange Man Bad (worst) nail.
Have you watched the daily Task Force news conference? Have you listened to the reporter's questions? I have and can see quite clearly what they are trying to do with their unhelpful, gotcha questions.
We have the largest, most diverse economy in the world. We have 330 million people spread out across 50 states and an area of 3.8 million square miles. As if Germany and their economy are the same as those of the United States.
One reason why the COVID-19 fatality rate in Germany is so low — less than two per cent —is that its universal health-care system provided widespread testing and high levels of care from the beginning
What's the fatality rate in France, Spain and Italy? They have universal health care too, right?
Its the old Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers joke. Its just using different devices.
Whatever his numerous faults, Trump has one very good thing going for him: good instincts. His gut. From the beginning, he has said we need to think about the costs of shutting everything down. We need to be thinking about how to get up and running again as soon as possible, but no sooner. People like Zeke Emmanuel who are talking about keeping things shut down for 12 to 18 months are just insane. For what? The arrival of an effective vaccine? (And they have the nerve to criticize having hopes in malaria drugs and zinc?) What exactly are we buying for such huge cost? Not nothing. I would much rather be treated for a bad case of COVID19 in a non-overwhelmed hospital system than an overwhelmed one. I would rather be treated for cancer or a heart attack in a non-overwhelmed hospital system than an overwhelmed one. But I've seen no evidence that these benefits are worth the huge costs.
ARM demonstrating why nobody pays attention to him.
I SO MUCH want to see our current stay-at-home policy (I live in NC) loosened and then lifted! But Trump can't lift it. It's imposed by the Governor and enforced by state and local authorities. What I hope Trump can do is mobilize public opinion to bring pressure on our governor and other governors to begin making substantial modifications that will move us back toward normal life as quickly as feasible. Once some states start that process, that will put pressure on other states to follow suit, as quickly as their local conditions permit.
'But the Trump-hating media will not help him do this. They're looking for ways to blame him, to worsen his credibility. Why not help?"
Question: Are the media a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Dem party, or is it the other way around? At the least, they're in cahoots.
Trump has the docs, particularly Fauci, to beat the pessimist drum and to advise people how to protect themselves. Meanwhile, his administration is working with the state to promote research and gather resources. But never mind! /Sarc.
The leftmediaswine are keenly aware that ad hominem attacks stoke the flames of Trump Derangement Syndrome to a far greater extent than focusing on issues and action. Consistent optimism is therefore a sin, but only if practiced by Trump.
Unfortunately, the corrupt media’s Pathological Trump Derangement Syndrome (PTDS) is as contagious as the CCP Virus.
Germany and US, as of today on the worldometer site
Germany: 1305 cases per million, 25 deaths per million
USA: 1223 cases per million, 39 deaths per million
Compared to the other top five nations, these are both very low and close to one another.
Sixth on the list is China, numbers for which are ridiculous lies.
Better times is directional. At peaks, pessimism takes over. That's why they're peaks.
Where is the evidence that Cassidy (or anyone else at the New Yorker) has a better track record on economic predictions than the guy who cuts my grass?
Quarantine the New Yorker! Have you sampled their keyboards for infectious germs? These non-essential journalists need to stay 6 feet away from the keyboard.
After 3-1/2 years of the Russia collusion hoax, the media has no credibility to squander and cannot recover.
Again the press game of lying about what trump said, and then attacking him for it. Strawman set up - and obliterated.
Trump did NOT say this thing will end "just around the corner". He said he HOPED and would LOVE for it to end by Easter. He then - based on the experts - said he was pushing the guidelines through till May. Just a while a go, he was predicting two weeks of hell and "many deaths" 100-240 thousand in total.
Trump's job as he put it, is to the Nation's Cheerleader. His job is not to be all doom and gloom and depress everyone.
We were never as docile and compliant and obedient as the Germans, nor were most other peoples, and that's a good thing.
Trump is a salesman, a promoter. Most people recognize that and take it into account. He tries to give encouragement and hope. That's not a bad thing. Hope and change.
What people in politics say - what you or I say - is only an approximation of what truth may be, and that's all the more true in a time of unprecedented crisis, but I don't see that the president has been seriously mistaken or misleading.
I really do wonder if the press believes its own bullshit.
Never forget, journalists are dumb rich kids whose parents couldn't get them into law school.
Sometimes I get annoyed at Trump because he whiffs on so many easy media dunks. But then I remember that he doesn't need to be good, just better than them. And so far, that hasn't been much of a challenge.
“Why not help?”
Because the news media is committed to the destruction of President Trump at all costs, repeat, at all costs.
The Dems/media believe they are helping, in doing everything they can to get Mr. Worse Than Hitler (tm) out of office. (Sure, people might die, but them's the breaks.)
Sometimes I get annoyed at Trump because he whiffs on so many easy media dunks. But then I remember that he doesn't need to be good, just better than them. And so far, that hasn't been much of a challenge.
There's been a ridiculous over-reaction in some rural and Mountain States. There's no need to shut down North Dakota or South Dakota. There's no need to keep people out of Parks in Texas. LA is now requiring customers to wear face coverings when going to grocery stores, in ADDITION to the 6 feet rule AND admitting only X number of people.
This is getting insane.
These people are playing a role and pretending to have insight
If Schadenfreude is delight in the misery of others, what's a good word for delight in one's own misery?
Selbstschadenfreude. Very rare in German. Many English-language bloggers use it and claim to have invented it. I wonder what would happen if you could get them all together in a room.
The Dutch use the word "zwelgen" to mean "to gloat over one's own misfortunes." They must be even stranger than the Germans.
" I'd say they should be scrupulously careful not to do any of the ordinary political partisanship that had already badly infected journalism"
They should, shouldn't they. Anyway, they won't, and we'll take it into account in The Reckoning.
"Why not help?"
Why are aren't they better! It's so sad! Actually, they are helping--the one cause that matters: tear down Trump and boost prog power, the country's welfare be damned.
https://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2020/04/data-suggest-masks-matter-tests-dont.php
I tried to put this in my earlier post, and I messed it up. Its a look at the world wide results with COVID and mask use. S Korea had massive testing, and was looked to as a great model.Until you look at Japan. Much lower death rate, but way more usage of masks.
Korea Japan
Test/m Death/m
312 .3
8875 6
Greetings from Europe. The reason for the ostensibly low death rate in Germany is that Germans, being super rational, distinguish between dying with Covid-19 and dying of Covid-19. Only the latter are counted in the German statistics. Belgium has probably even more extensive universal healthcare, but has more reported deaths per capita. Like most statistics showing international comparisons, you need to treat them very carefully indeed.
"Why not help?"
Because, as Lenin instructed, "the worse, the better."
FDR proclaimed in 1933, "The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself," for which was elevated to sainthood by the Democrats. I sense a different standard directed at President Trump.
what's a good word for delight in one's own misery?
Leftist

I disagree on one thing: face coverings are very low cost and seem to work. Czech Republic is doing very well with universal mask wearing mandate. Compared to shutting everything down, requiring mask wearing is nothing. We need to be looking for low hanging fruit regarding ways to prevent transmission and masks are that low hanging fruit. In fact, I don't think EVERY country doing well in terms of keeping things under control at low cost has lots of mask wearing.
Whoops. meant to say "In fact, I think EVERY country doing well in terms of keeping things under control at low cost has lots of mask wearing."
The Left is disappointed that Trump has not collapsed under pressure.
They want him to run around with his hair on fire to create an even greater sense of crisis.
"Once some states start that process, that will put pressure on other states to follow suit, as quickly as their local conditions permit."
Come on, Texas - I'm counting on you! I know I live close to blue Houston, but surely you can live up to your vaunted reputation for stubborn independence and create some county-by-county guidelines that can make this great state hum again - particularly in light of the current difficulties in oil.
We don't need face masking AND social distancing AND shutting everything down.
Sports teams in Germany are already back to training... with some social distancing, but they're back to work.
"Why not help? "
Something.... something... scorpion... something... frog...
Why not indeed. You are cute.
Mark, Here's how it goes:
Dems/MSM: Trump is a neo-nazi, lying shit and a Russian Spy. Lets impeach!
Trump: That's completely wrong - you're terrible people.
Liberals/Never-Trumpers: Trump's mean rhetoric is tearing us apart! Why can't he tone it down?
Does the press have any responsibility for tearing down Trump's credibility right when we need it?
I can only hope that since you, a retired law professor who taught at one of the most liberal colleges in the country, can see this, that maybe there will be a whole lot more who can see this as well.
Naturally, the media would prefer that we simmer in our own juices and not look forward to normal routines. False hope indeed!
The governor of Oregon stated that she wants to see 10 days to 2 weeks of no Covid-19 deaths before loosening restrictions on activities. This is utterly insane. You need to get people back to work as soon as you're at a point where the health care system is not overwhelmed.
And Chicago does it version of social distancing. 7 dead 21 wounded in shootings Tuesday. Jack Tapper could not be reached for comment. The Mayor did break the rules and had an appointment with her personal hair care provider.
I trust Trump's gut instinct more than I trust the medical professionals. My guess is that within 2 weeks, he realizes they have been wrong about almost everything so far.
High risk people can be given hcq as prophylactic and critical cases can be treated with hcq and other drugs. Back at work by 4th of July!
After 3-1/2 years of the Russia collusion hoax, the media has no credibility to squander and cannot recover.
I certainly hope so. We’ll get the answer first Tuesday of November.
remember my description of the media as placebo/pathogen
"One reason why the COVID-19 fatality rate in Germany is so low—less than two per cent—is that its universal health-care system provided widespread testing and high levels of care from the beginning..."
So much crap in just one abbreviated sentence:
Is that our new marker for a low level of fatalities - "less than two per cent" after widespread testing?
333,000,000 Americans x 2% = It's just like the flu!
The high number of tests in Germany is due to their early use of private labs (contrasted with the CDC/FDA failure here) which are conducting almost all of the tests and not related to their "universal health-care system."

I agree.
The press tore down its own credibility.
Trump's optimism is a net positive.
But then neo-fascist Leftist Collectivists do not care about anything beyond power.
That's the only BAMN goal.
Again, New York. I'm so very tired of the New York worldview which is all we are seeing these days. I heard a national sports talk guy today put it very correctly: "New York is in America, America is not New York City." (by the way, he is based out of LA).
We are not all sitting in the dark. We are not all hand-wringing. Even those in other stricken cities are not composing 'oh woe is me/us' essays. God forbid someone should show some optimism or even (horrors) faith. The people in New York cannot possibly be in as bad a shape as their writers are.
The gripes are divorced from the facts:
"The United States has none of these things. Despite widespread agreement among epidemiologists and economists that a massive increase in COVID-19 testing is urgently needed, it hasn’t been implemented yet."
Germany has conducted 918k tests or 10.9/million people, we have done 2.2 million or 6.6k/million people. They've done better but we are in the same range. Saying we've done none of these things is pretty much a lie.
CDC considers easing safety guidelines in some cases of coronavirus exposure, report
But the Models!!! the Models SAID!!
That there'd be 2.2 MILLION dead, by April
That ALL the ICE in the Arctic would be melted
That Even THINKING about the virus would infect you
That snow would be a thing, of the past
It's weird, that the models never seem to predict anything
The press only wants Trump to lose in Nov. That is all that matters to those patriots resisting all these years. Victory in sight. If only the virus comes back in October for the win.
tucker carlson
They're looking for ways to blame him, to worsen his credibility. Why not help?
Seems too obvious a question.
TDS is big business. Just way too many people who are addicted to criticism of their political enemies, Trump in particular. And apparently those people respond to the marketing/advertising that pays for these media companies' operations.
COVID-19 hasn't changed that. Maybe made it worse, as some of these consumers depend on Trump bashing to palliate the increased boredom or anxiety.
Oh and this is a general problem that applies to the other side of the aisle as well.
"One reason why the COVID-19 fatality rate in Germany is so low — less than two per cent —is that its universal health-care system provided widespread testing and high levels of care from the beginning"
It's because Germans are German.
Again, New York. I'm so very tired of the New York worldview which is all we are seeing these days. I heard a national sports talk guy today put it very correctly: "New York is in America, America is not New York City." (by the way, he is based out of LA).
Amen, Temujin!
Germany's health care system may be 'universal' but it is comprised of private insurers, IIRC.
(Sigh) Reading the New Yorker for political commentary. (Shakes head.)
here's the light at the end of the tunnel: WE'RE NOT GOING TO SIT AT HOME FOR 12-18 FUCKING MONTHS! This shit better be over by June. If it ain't, it is.
The Coronavirus bailout is not Trump pivoting towards socialism. It's more like a pivot towards Völkisch equality for the American Whites and Blacks:
Asian and White ethnic businesses get looted...
Landlords are prevented from evicting nonpaying tenants...
The Mexicans do all the nasty work...
The American Whites and the Blacks can stay at home and collect a stimulus check. Anybody who complains is a ruthless murderer.
The NY view. Indeed. Of our 14000 deaths from the virus half come from NY and NJ.
OK, just another embicle NY moron pushing 'Orange Man Bad' narrative. Yet, I'm with Trump on this one. Given the blizzard of negative hype by the MSM, Trump almost alone, is the one person giving anyone some glimmer of hope.
oops, misspelled imbecile!

"Question: Why are the libs fixated on testing?"
Because they think it's a lot like voting. And they know how to handle *that* just fine.
To the ignorant clown that wrote that steaming pile of garbage: leading us out the darkness is the president’s main job in times of crisis, dumbass. That’s what a leader does: lead us. Provide optimism and strength and resilience.
What a leader does not need — and what the American people do not need — right now is a whining and complaining from a little bitch on the sidelines.
Probably a damn good thing this idiot was not torturing people with his opinions in Great Britain during the Nazi bombing raids of London: “Churchill is full of shit, he drinks all day and lies to us all the time, we can’t survive, waaaah waaah!l”
STFU. I’ve had enough of these losers.
Follow the money. Most of the media organs are actually owned by entertainment companies like Disney. You can look it up. And these parent companies have made major investments in China or depend for a large part of their revenue on China. As an example, the NBA went overboard in their defense of China when one of it's officials dared to defend Hong Kong's protesters. Why? Because the NBA gets a lot of revenue from the Chinese.
Unlike manufacturers who moved their production to China, these entertainment companies can't repatriate their businesses. If they side with America they end up antagonizing their Chinese paymasters. Those billion Chinese as their potential customers made the CEOs of these companies slaver. And now they're stuck defending their business model.
The Washington Post even puts out a Chinese government sponsored supplement. I realize that Bezos doesn't need the money, but you have to ask how much of the WaPo bottom line comes from it's relationship with the Chinese.
The NY Times was rescued by Carlos Slim, a Mexican billionaire. Ever wonder how much Slim is connected to China and how much influence he has on the NY Times?
In our interconnected world, China's tentacles are somewhere in everyone's pocket. How much of the stuff Amazon peddles is made in China and what would Amazon's revenue look like if the American people decoupled from China?
Follow the money.
Liberals hate. They hate deeply and completely. Hate is the driving force for the Left and always has been. They hate America and they hate Americans. Oh, they will pretend that they love their country -- if only it would change completely. But they don't love the America they live in and they don't love the people who live here. That's why they are so comfortable relentlessly slandering the country and slandering the people.
The NY Times is a cheerleader for hate.
That is not their job. The job of the media is to create a community of like-minded users and monetize them , feeding them information that reinforces their views and their allegiance to your platform, and via gaslighting and manipulation, get them frothing mad, “enthusiastic” and motivated so that they generate more clicks, views, likes and sharing. Cha-Ching! Political parties are closely integrated in this effort (as they seek enthusiastic, motivated, manipulated communities of voters) as are the activist groups and lobbyists posing as think tanks or charities that generate the daily push emails to editors about the top issues they need to cover and memes they need to repeat.
The reporters’ job is to help the parent company achieve its mission of monetizing its ignorant (and deliberately kept ignorant) users. Creating confrontations or sound bytes that go viral generate extra bonus points. Doing favors and carrying messages for the politicians you are aligned with pleases your users and increases your job prospects.
This is just the way it is, and has been for some time. There are a few individual exceptions, of course, but generally you cannot escape the manipulated messaging. This is how social media and technology make money. Media has always been about selling adverts, monetizing its communities- tech has just changed the way it is done.
I wonder how FDR's "We have nothing to fear, but fear itself" line would be received today.
