I got to see him in concert a couple of times. Was fan of his from an early age.
Dolly Parton is all class. She's charitable in word and deed. Long ago she would feed the few homeless she encountered; she took them to Waffle House, upon occasion. And she has donated books in honor of her father.
Kenny Rogers will be missed but his music stands the test of time. It seems he had a good run.
Good morning, Nichevo. You got to be kidding me the guy is one of the most successful artists of all time in a number of different Medias. He never seem to take himself too seriously. I don't know maybe you're too young to remember how wildly successful the man was and how broad has crossover appeal reached.
I'm not a big fan of country western music. I don't dislike it, but I'm not a natural fan of it. I watched much of the Ken Burns History of Country Western Music on PBS. It pulled me in and glued me. Highly recommend.
Country Western music is loved by many people I know, so I get to hear it when I'm around them. Heard "The gambler" just a few weeks ago. Classic. Kenny's voice is one of the best.

I met Dolly Parton -- actually worked with her for a few nights. Very nice, very genuine person, and very professional. Also put on a great show. This was when she was broadening her audience, crossing over from hard-core CW to more Americana-type music. The audiences were mostly non-country people, and they gave her standing ovations. Which she more than deserved.
Guess it was time to fold them.

I don't know that much about Kenny Rogers, but those were nice words that Dolly Parton said. She always seems sincere and kindly. There's considerable evidence that she's as nice as she claims to be.

But fortune smiled again when he convinced the music industry he could sing ballads, thus disproving Fitzgerald's assertion that there are no second acts in American lives...

Dolly's the one who made me cry just now. Her voice is so soothing, her words are so heartfelt. I don't know if my 23 year old son knows who Rogers is, but he sure knows Dolly. She crosses all categories and age groups. Can she just speak to us every day during the coronavirus? She can talk about her pets, or whatever.

I know the lyrics to every tune on his 1980 greatest hits record, which my foreign born mother bought on release (vinyl) and played endlessly around the house. All three of my kids went to sleep to the dulcet sounds of my rendition of the Gambler, my favorite of his tunes. He picked a fine time to leave.

I suggest listening to the Dolly Parton's America podcast, hosted by the creator of Radiolab. I haven't finished it myself, but it's been surprisingly fascinating so far.
My favorite Kenny Rogers song is not one of his country ones, but the very groovy "Just Dropped In) to See What Condition My Condition Was In."
"Ruby" is a good song too. I expect it hit home for many Vietnam vets.

Saw him at the Randy Travis tribute a couple years ago. Had just had knee replacement surgery and was moving with great difficulty. Voice still good but not that strong.
In answer to tcrosse's question: Elmore Leonard. FYI, the only parts of the US without accents are the west coast and parts of New Hampshire and Vermont.

Dolly Parton is the greatest. She's song some great duets, not just with Rodgers, but others. I like the Kauss-Parton duet of "Sweet Music man".
Its amazing the Gambler was recorded by Rodgers in '78. I remember seeing him on the Muppet Show and I think he song it.
