I might have made a mistake in voting for Clueless Joe.

I have no idea how this will play out but early voting should be curbed for those who aren't going to be out of town.

I've decided to NOT engage in Operation Chaos (i.e., vote for perceived candidate of the opposing party), because it tends to backfire so often. Also. I can't tell who'd be weaker in the General - Crazy Bernie or Slow Joe.

So, I'll vote for Trump and NO on any and all ballot propositions.

"Will you vote for the Democratic nominee in November no matter who it is?"

(Yes/No)

Bloomberg Voters: 78% / 18%
Sanders Voters: 83% / 15%
Biden Voters: 89% / 10%
Warren Voters: 91% / 8%

NBC exit poll.

Katie Porter is running unopposed in the Dem primary for the CA 45 Congressional seat. There is a slew of Republican challengers which hopefully will narrow so that Porter can be defeated in the fall. Porter's entire political schtick is anti-Trump. She's like the Orange County Schiff or Maxine Waters.

The vote I was trying to make was a vote for a contested convention, i.e. no one getting a national majority.

Biden is the best option for the deep state. They're all looking to get their jobs back running things.

Polls closed just five minutes ago and they're calling Virginia for Biden.

Quite curious to see Warren's result here in MA. Some are happy that she will not win and so be convinced to get out of the race. They think that, magically, this will mean we don't have to listen to her harping and shrill voice any longer. I remind them that she is one of our Senators and that not being in the race might embolden her to be more visible, more harpingly shrill and annoying. Puzzled but acknowledging looks follow. Heads drop, and folks shuffle back to what they were doing. Am I the asshole?

rehajm said...

Biden is a Democrat. Bernie is not a Democrat. Bloomberg is a ________?

Yancey Ward said...

I thought that Comrade Sanders would be stronger here in Virginia.

Not easy for Sanders to win a primary in a state with this many black voters-20% of the eligible voter pool altogether, and about 40-45% of the Democratic voter base. To win Virginia, Sanders has to get at least 30% of the black vote, and he didn't come close to this in South Carolina; or Sanders has to win 60%+ of the white vote.

If you voted for Biden, I think you made the right choice looking forward to November, but I know I am a minority in this opinion.

rehajm said...

Each and every last one of the sitting Senators who voted to convict Trump deserves to go down in defeat tonight. I say that not out of politics, but rather from an ethics standpoint. I would say the very same thing about a Republican Senator voting to impeach a sitting Democratic President while trying to get his job. It's just bullshit on stilts.

Empirically, does proportional allocation of delegates in primary elections, instead of winner-take-all, make brokered conventions more or less likely — or does it depend on the distribution of centrist vs. extreme candidates?

rhhardin said... "Rush says the dems mean to lose with Biden so that Bernie doesn't take over and drive out the party deep state apparatus. Fighting for their jobs."

That sounds right. I can't figure out how all of that works, but it seems like the nominee (or his Convention delegates?), win or lose, get to appoint a lot of the party apparatus.

Sanders looks to have an actual majority in Vermont -- the first actual majority of the season, and +40 over Biden.

Looks like Biden 48 to Sanders 26 in Virginia, home of the Deep State.

Looks like only Sanders and Biden will get delegates from Virginia. Bloomberg at a disappointing third or fourth place with 11%. (Warren at 11 or 12%.)

7:22 Eastern and RCP finally got around to admitting that Sanders won Vermont.

“Inga - I haven't been keeping track of your preference (or any of the other libs on Althouse). Who is your choice?”

My first choice was always Warren, but then it started looking like she wasn’t going to make it. My next choice was Bernie, but it looks like he won’t get the moderate vote. I never did prefer Biden and worry about his cognition. BUT as most Democrats say, I’ll vote for whoever gets the nomination.

So much suspense. Will Bernie hold up physically? Will Biden’s family mercifully put him out to pasture? Will either of them accumulate enough delegates? How much cash will Bloomberg burn? Who will the Dem’s surprise us with in Milwaukee? Will Milwaukee burn?

Yancey Ward said...

Here are the 14 states voting in the primaries today along with the delegate breakdowns from 2016. This will give you guide to how well or badly Sanders is doing vs 2016 where he lost the pledged delegate count at the end 2205 to 1846- he lost by 359 delegates, which is the metric you should pay attention to since the superdelegates don't get a 1st round vote.
..........................Sanders Clinton
Virginia....................33..........62
Vermont.....................16...........0
North Carolina..............47..........60
Massachussetts..............45..........46
Maine.......................17...........8
Tennessee...................23..........44
Alabama......................9..........44
Arkansas....................10..........22
Minnesota...................46..........31
Texas.......................75.........147
Oklahoma....................21..........17
Colorado....................41..........25
Utah........................27...........6
California.................206.........269

Total......................616.........781.

There were, of course, no third candidates for any of these states picking up delegates. This should be your benchmark for whether or not Biden will win the nomination outright on the 1st ballot.

As a first approximation, I would guess Biden needs to come out of tonight with at least a margin of 100 delegates over Sanders to have a solid chance at a first ballot victory. The flies in the ointment, of course, are the other two candidates. I think, based on the 47% return so far in Virginia, that Bloomberg won't win a delegate tonight, and Warren might only win delegates in Massachussetts. I had thought that Klobuchar might win a few in Minnesota, but I now doubt that. So, I think this race is likely already heads up, but Sanders still needs Warren to drop out after tonight- if she doesn't, and keep getting 10%, then Sanders can't win even a plurality victory- he would end up losing on the 1st ballot by at least 100 delegates, and likely more.

An hour ten minutes - 99 percent results in Virginia.

That's some counting.

Of course, in November, they will suddenly find several boxes of uncounted ballots in various Fairfax precincts to suddenly change all the numbers.

Yancey Ward said...

Achilles,

Sanders will have to outperform greatly his returns in the midwest and mid-Atlantic states versus 2016. Now, if Warren drops out, he has a chance to do so- Biden has already shown that he doesn't connect with midwesterners in Iowa. Clinton beat Sanders in Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. If he comes out of tonight down by 100 delegates, Sanders will need to reverse all of those losses.

I don't think a brokered convention is going to happen unless the majority pledged delegate leader is murd.......dies of natural causes. Either Sanders or Biden will win a majority- I firmly believe that now just based on the early returns tonight.

Oh, and it looks as though Bloomberg is going to get a delegate (one) from North Carolina.

Yancey Ward said...

As I pointed out earlier- Texas posted some early voting totals before the polls closed- Sanders did very well in that. Texas may be Biden's Waterloo if he has a weakness tonight. Sanders won the hispanic caucusers in Nevada by a good margin, and Texas might reflect that sudden appeal Sanders has. Additionally, African-Americans only make up 11% of the population about half was you see in Virginia and North Carolina.

The same could apply to California and Colorado later.

I want the November election to be one of real contrasts. Really put it to the voters, in the starkest of terms,

“In which direction do you [the voters] want the country to head?”

The way of the Founders/Framers (with Trump acting as an imperfect proxy),

or, the way of the EU/USSR/PRC/UN (with Bernie as a model proxy)

Do we want freedom FROM government (which is the question with which the Framers wrestled) via limited, constitutional government whereby government itself is bound by law, or do we want total government?

It looks like Biden will overperform in Oklahoma, Vermont, and Maine versus Clinton's showing in 2016 versus Sanders, but the differences are going to be under 15 additional delegates. Sanders will make all of that up if he can win Texas alone. It is interesting to me that none of the networks have called Texas, Arkansas, or Tennessee. This suggest Sanders is overperforming greatly in all three versus 2016- this is good news for Sanders and bad news for Biden- it might have a lot to do with the early voting in all three states.

Bloomberg definitely hurt Biden in all the states with extensive early voting. This could be a disaster for Biden in the making because it means Bloomberg won't drop out after tonight. He will poll more like he did in a non-early voting state like Virginia (9%), but that 9% is critical to Biden's hope of winning at least a plurality lead in delegates.

In 2016, CO was still a caucus state, and it was widely known that Bernie was cheated here. superdelegate Polis went all in for Hillary, but it didn't cost him anything. Now - 4 years later - Bernie really won CO. FU Hillary. That's all I got.

I would guess the Democratic machines in all these states were working for Biden in the get out the vote effort today and Saturday. This is all probably technically illegal per the campaign finance laws, but impossible to stop.

That's what Trump has been talking about.

But to understand that you'd have to at least have taken the time to look at the other rates and ask yourself why the US rate was so much higher...and lets face it, that's not really something Inga and ARM are up for.

Yancey Ward said...

I guess the big question after tonight is this- will Bloomberg drop out and endorse Biden? This would probably seal the deal for Biden going forward, regardless of how Texas and California end up voting tonight. You can judge Bloomberg's strength by the states voting tonight that don't have easy early voting- he polls around 9% in those states. In states with easy early voting, he is polling above 15%. After tonight, there are is little early voting advantage for him- the distance from that debate performance is now 3 weeks. The states after this only started early voting after that debate performance.

"But the same vaccine could not work?" Trump said. "You take a solid flu vaccine — you don't think that would have an impact, or much of an impact, on corona?"

For this race to still be in doubt, Sanders must win Texas and California. He will definitely do better in both states than he did in 2016, but he actually needs to win both of them. Without those wins, Biden's momentum will be too much.

Today US public health leaders addressed a Senate committee hearing and clarified the country's response to the growing COVID-19 outbreak that is now seeded in multiple communities.

"It will take at least a year to a year in a half to have a vaccine we can use," said National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) director Anthony Fauci, MD. Though work on a novel coronavirus vaccine has been some of the fastest on record, Fauci said, he explained to senators that a vaccine candidate must be proven safe and efficacious in a multi-step trial process.

I don't think that Biden can seal a deal. It's a unique situation, with a primary on Saturday followed by 14 on the following Tuesday. After this, they spread out again, and Biden has to go into those states, where he'll alternate talking nonsense and squabbling with voters. He might win, but he'll still have to be dragged across the line.

Dr Fauci actually discussed this today where he said the obama-ites at the FDA changed the rules to make it impossible for independent (but certified) labs to rapidly develop and launch test kits for disease detection without first going thru the entire bureaucratic maze created by the obama-ites.

I would suspect the dems also performed the same bureaucracy suffocation techniques on drug development as well.

The way I look at it there are about 4000 delegates and you need about 2000 to win on the first ballot or about half. At 8:48 CST Biden has about half the delegates allocated and Sanders and the others have the rest. So Joe would be heading for a first ballot win because Butigfxc and Klubbie will transfer their delegates to him. But Texas and California aren't in. Sanders is ahead in Texas and no results on RealClear from California

Inga said...

What more is there to say? It’s all betting the odds now between a Bernie and Biden. As I’ve said and most Democrats say, whoever gets the nomination will get our vote against a Trump.
