Iowans are an agricultural people. They watch the domestic livestock and then mimic the herding tendencies. Even the city folk, except those who came from away, started out on a farm somewhere rural. Caucusing is like being back home again for them. I was one, once.

First results just showed up at RealClearPolitics.com. With a whopping 1.36% of the precincts reporting, it's Sanders in front with 22%, Buttigieg close behind with 21%, and Biden and Warren essentially tied at 17%.
I have to look up what the "Second Round" is all about. With 0.57% (that's just above a half of one percent) reporting, Buttigieg is in front with 27%, Biden and Sanders tied for second with 20%.

I was listening to NPR as I picked up some food, and was surprised to learn that Iowa had a satellite caucus for Iowa residents who were in Phoenix Arizona.
Oka-a-a-a-ay. If you supported a candidate in the first round who got less than 15% then you can go with your second choice, provided that your second choice was over the 15% threshold.
So Buttigieg is the second choice for the "non-viable" candidates. Interesting, that.

So...the turnout numbers look to be about equal to 2016, which is not encouraging because there were more candidates and there should be some...passion...in the Democrats this year.

Does anyone know what is going on with the delayed reporting? So far RealClearPolitics has been frozen at a touch under 2% reporting for a while. At this point it’s Sanders 28%, Warren and Buttigieg at 25% and 24%, respectively, then a big step down to Klobuchar down at 12% and Biden in fifth with 11%. But that’s with only 2% of the precincts reporting.

What a disaster optics wise. 4 hours after the caucuses close and not a single vote has been tallied per the DMR. The results at this point will be tainted no matter who wins thanks to the social media rumors filling in the vacuum of actual information to report.

“The app that was intended to relay Caucus results to the Party failed; the Party’s back-up telephonic reporting system likewise has failed,” the campaign wrote in an email, obtained by The Washington Post. “Now, we understand that Caucus Chairs are attempting to — and, in many cases, failing to — report results telephonically to the Party. These acute failures are occurring statewide.”
The Biden campaign requested state party leaders provide “full explanations and relevant information regarding the methods of quality control you are employing, and an opportunity to respond, before any official results are released.”
