"Ostensibly the ad is designed to address the criticism of the fact that Bloomberg, as mayor of New York City, hired Trump to build a golf course... But that's not the real goal of the ad."

"The real goal is to troll Trump over his appearance — as there are several still photographs of Trump on the golf course shown on screen, all of which make the President look, well, large. Trump, as Bloomberg well knows, is decidedly vain and appearance focused. There is nothing that will bother Trump more than seeing an ad like this that is clearly intended to make Trump look out of shape and sort of bumbling."

Says CNN about this ad:

Now, I'm reading "REPORT: TRUMP IS MELTING DOWN OVER BLOOMBERG ADS ABOUT HIS WEIGHT" by Bess Levin in Vanity Fair. I'm soooo jaded about reports that Trump is "melting down." Levin quotes some Trump tweets about Bloomberg but none of them are about Bloomberg's insinuation that Trump is fat. Trump openly calls Bloomberg short, so he'd only undercut his own comedy routine if he got butthurt about Bloomberg calling him fat.

And Trump knows he's fat. He's self-deprecating about it, making it part of his own comedy. And he put out this tweet immediately after Bloomberg's fat-shaming ad:

Trump looks fat in his own tweet. And most Americans are fat too. Bloomberg is an idiot if he's aiming at Trump and collaterally damaging millions of Americans who are sensitive about their weight. And the same goes for Trump mocking Bloomberg for being short. I'll bet a third of American men are as short as Bloomberg. Why belittle them? Hmm. "Belittle" is one of those latent politically incorrect words. Why diminish them make them feel small disparage them?

Bloomberg's "get the job done" slogan is good. It emphasizes that he's competent (unlike Biden) and that he won't destroy the economy (unlike Sanders and Warren). To win the Democratic primary, so he has a shot at Trump, he should introduce himself to the many people who just think he's a short rich guy with a Jewish name. Bloomberg built a hugely successful business, creating lots of jobs, and he was an effective mayor of New York City, which is a lot bigger than South Bend.

I don't think his gun control ads work in the primary: They don't distinguish him from his rivals. In the general election, he can see how the issue polls in must-win states. I think he'd do better to talk about the fall in the murder rate when he was mayor.

Bloomberg is a very short guy with a very tall girlfriend: I suspect he can handle jokes about his height. I also think he's too smart to waste time and energy trying to make Trump "melt down."

If Trump cared about looking good, he'd get a decent haircut and a good tailor. I think he prefers to look big. (Why the haircut I don't know.)

Althouse; about that Tweet of Trump claiming to be getting a bit of exercise...

The date was last Saturday. The time was late morning. The official reports were that Trump had gone to Trump National Golf Club, and I have no doubt that he did. But my understanding of the story is that while Trump went over to the golf club, nobody was playing golf. It was raining. It had started raining Friday night, and it was a miserable rain all day Saturday in the Palm Beach area.

And the photo of Trump teeing off was an old photo.

So why that sort of fakery? As I understand it, the story is a lot more interesting than what you are letting on, Althouse. Looking at the fascinating Twitter feed of Tom Joseph, it goes like this:
~ On Friday night, Joseph posts to Twitter video he found of Trump getting off AF1 that night in West Palm. It showed Trump descending the short, lower ramp of the plane, stopping halfway down and waving as a device to help him get some balance, and then doing a marked leg-drag as he moved from the steps to the vehicle parked just feet away from the ramp.
~ That video when viral, and then Q fans went into attack mode.
~ The story doubtlessly got back to Trump's communications people overnight, and the next day, they are Tweeting (even recklessly/falsely) about Trump being fit and playing golf.

I really do think that being obese is the least of Trump's physical infirmities right now.

Is it okay if we give this our Trump Dementia Syndrome tag?

I watched the video of him getting off the plane, it was dark and wet and he had an umbrella in one hand. He was deliberate about where he stepped. He appeared to be waving to some people greeting him. He never looked unsteady, just careful, as anyone would be in the dark on wet metal stairs.

There is nothing like Hillary getting dragged into the back of an SUV or coughing or appearing to have a seizure when balloons were released. His eyeball didn't start bleeding(Biden), and he didn't have a heart attack (Bernie).

With the left it is always projection. Always.

The Mini-Mike ad that deserves analysis is Bloomberg's fallacious Super Bowl ad. The young man whose mother mourns him so much? He was twenty when he died -- scarcely a "child." And he died in what they used to call a "rumble" between two gangs. The shooter was 18, also not really a "child," and he's serving 34 years in prison.

In order to get to the number 2900, Bloomberg had to count young adults as old as 19 as "children," which strikes me as dishonest. Young males in their late teens are a long way from being children. The gun that killed George Kemp, whose mother was featured in Bloomberg's ad, was that gun legally acquired? What are the Democrats planning to do about guns that aren't legally acquired. So far, the only answer seems to be that they plan to do nothing.

Its like his 24 7 sales mode. He is ALWAYS in the middle of the pitch. Always.Bloomberg thinking he can trade jabs, tells me Bloomberg doesn't understand the rules of the game he's wading into.
It's like the better halfs holiday party last weekend. The entertainment was a stand up comic, that promised a "clean" set. It was a small crowd so he was working the room hard trying to build a relationship. One of the employees that is known as the company cutup, and quick with his tongue, took a couple of verbal swipes at the comic, is was very quickly stammering when the comic came back at him hard. In the end, teasing and getting the best of your co-workers, does not prepare you to go against a pro.
Bloomberg would be far ahead to stick to politiking, and avoid going toe to toe with the President.

I knew about the "Argumentum ad Misericordia," the Argument from Pity that seems to constitute at least 60 per sent of why the average Democratic candidate thinks you should vote for them. But there are scads others, including (hitherto unknown to me) the "Argumentum ad crumenam," or the appeal based on money or the promise of profit--the basis for all the "free stuff" the Dems like to promise. There is also the Argumentum ad invidiam, described as "an appeal to envy or other undesireable human trait," which author Erlich describes as a "powerful tool for demagogues."
