Dershowitz clarified and attacked the dem representation of his objections in the WSJ today. Not being very clear. He has to say Trump did nothing wrong, and it's possible for presidents to do something wrong.

His own argument is at fault. Everybody works with mixed motives, so if Trump was working in the national interest it doesn't matter if it benefits Trump. The dems show that's not good enough by saying if the president thinks it's in the national interest for him to be reelected then he can do anything.

What that shows is that Dershowitz's argument is wrong, not that Trump did anything wrong.

Dershowitz hasn't found the actual criterion, is all. Neither have the democrats.

It's the ordinary language problem. You know more about words than you can explain. So you can't make a rule with it.

Just say Trump was interested in finding out what the hell went on in 2016 with this incredible string of bombshell charges, which looks like it's worth investigating. The impeachment is just the latest version of it.

Asks Ukraine to help, since the corrupt president there was thrown out.

It's a little weak to say that people act from mixed motives. It's really about what's understood to be the president's job. This seems to fit in fine.

Gilbar,

I know you think you are kidding with your comment about driving the No Malarky bus into election central but it brought me a flashback.

In 1980 (Maybe 1984) the Election to see who would control the honeypot was very close on election night. The New Progressive Party (PNP) was leading by about 3,000 votes, out of 3 million or so cast.

Rafael Hernandez Colon, the Popular Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for governor and party head got on board a concrete mixer truck with a bunch of his supporters and drove to the coliseum were the vote counting was taking place. They drove up to the gate, where there was already a pretty good mob.

Hernandez-Colon got up on the truck, made an impassioned speech abut how the election was being stolen, promised to drive the truck through the gates and wreak havoc. Then they all started chanting "A LAS TRINCHERAS!!!" (To the trenches)

A mass of police barred the way and after an hour or two of great TV, the situation was diffused.

I've always wondered what would have happened if not for the police. Would he really have driven the truck in and destroyed or disrupted the process? Was it just for show and the police allowed him an excuse to back off? If the police had not been there, could he have survived the embarassment of backing off?

I forget who won and it really didn't matter. Not a dime's worth of difference between the two parties.

There were never any real accusations of electoral fraud. There never are, it is pretty much impossible with the way voting is carried out here.

NOTE: In Puerto Rico we only have elections every 4 years in which everybody, mayors, city council, state sens and reps and governor are elected. Most people vote a straight party ticket though this has been changing in recent elections.

The mask came off last night. Bureaucratic incompetence is not a bug, but a feature for the Democrats. What is the purpose of the Democrat Party? It’s primary purpose has long bee to make its leaders and the top people who elect them, to get rich, and them even richer. Speaker Palsi, the last time that she had the oversized gavel, gave away the game, when selling Obama’s Porkulus stimulus package that she claimed was going to create millions of jobs. She claimed that every dollar spent by the government would return 4-5 dollars to the economy. Of course that was Keynesian economics, that had been empirically discredited for at least 30-40 years by then. FDR at least had an excuse. He didn’t know any better. The “economists” advising Obama knew better, but were in on the scam. She then went on to say that since the goal was government spending, they might as well spend it on their priorities. Which I suspected at the time, and it was borne out by reality, that what she meant was that Dem politicians, their families and cronies were about to hit the jackpot. And, of course, they did. They founded solar companies, “borrowed” hundreds of millions from the government, skimmed off most of it, then let the company go belly up. Or one politician’s spouse Becomes the primary contractor for a high speed rail project that is coming in well over budget, while family embers and cronies are the ones selling the land that the high speed trains are supposed to, maybe eventually, run on. No surprise that the kids of Biden, Kerry, Palsi Herself, Clinton, etc, all got lucrative do-nothing contracts as a result of this corruption (only Crooked Hillary was brash enough to actually benefit personally - her colleagues all seemed to have the decency to run most of the graft trough their kids).

It has long been evident that there are three parts of the Democratic Party. The cronies provide the money to get the politicians elected. Many of them get a cut of the action, a skim of all that spending that Dem politicians are always pushing. As Speaker Palsi pounded out a bit over a decade ago, it isn’t really important where the money is spent, as long as it is spent (and their cronies enriched). The second part consists of the party leadership and top tier politicians, who take their cut of the action, their slice of the skim. And the third part, the sheeple, who vote (even revote, and sometimes keep voting after death) for the politicians. The politicians have to convince te sheeple that they care that they really care about what the sheeple care about. At least at the top at least they don’t. They just have to appear to care. So last night we saw both Sanders and Warren (I believe) flying into and out of the same airports in separate private jets within less than a half hour. The GND is great as a way to garner support of the sheeple, but the reality is most top Dems don’t really care about the environment. What they care about, in reality, is getting the sheeple to vote for them. And for the money and power that comes from winning elections.

Part of this dynamic is that gives the excuses to spend more money increasing their base for skimming their cut. It also increases the number of people who are employed to address their policy goals, people whose livelihoods are dependent upon the politicians whose policy goals that they were hired to address. So, for the most part as bureaucrats, their primary goal is to build their bureaucratic empires, which is an incentive for incompetence. Their agencies don’t grow by being competent. That only results is cuts in their budgets. Incompetence is what drives budget increases.

You may think that you are kidding with the two parties joining or "fusing". It happens mostly in state and local politics. It happened once in the past at the presidential level with US Grant.

Why would we expect that it could not happen in national politics? I think what would drive it would be some strong third party that started winning national elections and running strong presidential candidate.

From Wikipedia

"Electoral fusion is an arrangement where two or more political parties on a ballot list the same candidate, pooling the votes for that candidate. Distinct from the process of electoral alliances in that the political parties remain separately listed on the ballot, the practice of electoral fusion in jurisdictions where it exists allows minor parties to influence election results and policy by offering to endorse or nominate a major party's candidate."

The entire process of the caucus was ungainly. As I said in the other thread, choosing whether to retain this inherently chaotic process rather than adopt a more straightforward measure of voter preferences was entirely the decision of the Iowans. The old ways are not always the best. A process that worked adequately when newspapers were the main conduit of information will not necessarily scale well when it is under the scrutiny of dozens if not hundreds of cable news reporters. To blame the software is to ignore the underlying problem.

Qwinn said...

Uh. ARM. As far as counting votes go, a caucus will obviously have a lot LESS votes to count than a full primary. A caucus by any measure should be far far easier to count. That you would suggest that it's an issue of scalability when the process you're criticizing is pretty much the *smallest* possible method is hilarious.

The caucus is a charming Iowa tradition like RAGBRAI, the state fair and the Bix race. Democrats of all stripes make it a point to attend, but not so much for Republicans. It is a simple task to tabulate votes just as it is easy and well practiced for the DNC mouthpiece Des Moines Register to provide a final poll.

The fact that both the caucuses and the final poll were supposedly screwed up by technical glitches is more suspicious than the murder of Seth Rich and the Vince Foster and Jeffrey Epstein suicides.

That is precisely how I've gotten many of my gigs, which is unfortunate.

I've worked with companies, big ones, that literally had production shut down for weeks and sometimes months while trying to correct horrifically designed and executed ERP's and other global applications such as Financial Reporting Systems and CRM's, though I am not by any stretch a deep "techie".

So, what will the demonrats do this evening?

What are their marching orders?

Will the be petulant 2 yo or trying to act grown up?

Since they are the arbiters of “dignified” now.

Nigel Farage is supposed to be in the audience.

Who has been tapped to give the SOTU response for the Democrats? It will be interesting to see if they take a restrained approach or go full-tilt boogie.

At the beginning of the SOTU, Trump should say that it looks like a tough room. So many frowns. So much disappointment. Well, I'm still going to be the President tomorrow and next week and the rest of the year, so let's get to work for the American people.

Oh, full-tilt boogie for certain. You typically accelerate when rolling downhill.
