I liked the 2 times at yesterday's Las Vegas rally when Trump talked about computers — first, to say what's wrong with movies and second, enacting a scene between him and Barron.

1. Explaining his "Bring back 'Gone with the Wind'":

"What I say is: Make great movies. Not this computerized crap. Computerized garbage."

2. Talking about the bad $5 billion Obamacare website:

"I have a son at home — he's a genius with computers" — mimes typing on a keyboard, does his Barron voice — "'Hi, Dad. What's up, Dad? Get outta here'/'Hey, listen, I'm the President of the United States, Barron, don't talk to your —'/'Dad, can't you see I'm playing with my computer?' The guy talks to me, he's working with his computer. These guys are genius. You know, they grow up with that. It's like walking. But he's looking at me. I could have given him their health care site. He would have done it for nothing, and it would have been better than what they have there..." — mimes typing and does the Barron voice again — "'Come on, Dad. I'm busy, Dad. Whatdya want? Whatdya want, Dad?'" — the crowd cheers, chants "Barron, Barron!" — "Whoa! Wow!... He's gonna like — he's a good boy. He's a tall boy. He's up there. Just turned 13. I say" — looks up — "'Hi, Barron. How ya doin'?"

I love the father-son interaction where the father tries to use his I'm the President of the United States,  in the classic don't talk to your father like that format.

And I totally agree with him that computerized movies are crap.

Not even close really.

But one time somewhere LLR-lefty Chuck claims (in an Adam Schiff-ty sort of way) that he was told by some Trump course staffer about some incident that happened some time back that puts Trump in some kind of bad light.

LLR-lefty Chuck can console himself with that deeply spiritual (for him) moment of "victory" over Trump.

It's "victories" like that which make Chuck's long and tortured and anguished decision to not join the US military that much more bearable over time.

I think I speak for us all when I say: God Speed LLR-lefty Chuck.

I am reminded of the years long campaign waged by LLR-lefty Chuck to convince everyone that Trump is the worst of the worst cheater on the golf course.

Of course, even a simple google search revealed that pro golfers relay Trump is a good golfer and the real cheaters are other.

Google John Daly on Letterman's show where Daly responded to Letterman asking about cheating by blowing off the Trump stories but then going into detail about what a horrendous cheater Bill Clinton is. World class cheater in fact.

LLR-lefty Chuck basically had a meltdown on these pages when that was pointed out. LLR-lefty Chuck was not emotionally prepared to be confronted with the implosion of his latest set of lies.

It was very amusing!

And GWTW movie setting was historically accurate. There had been three major battles around Atlanta's entrenchments that ended in a stalemate and horrible casualties. Then Sherman put on a siege for 50 days of cannon shelling the civilians followed by a two days of Battle of Jonesboro when he flanked the Confederates to cut the last RR 20 miles south of Atlanta (and near the Fitzgerald homeplace). And that triggered the evacuation of Atlanta by Hood when he blew up up his own ammunition train. All of that happened that way.

Can't agree with PDJT on GWTW, though he's spot on as regards CGI. I saw the COTW trailer and thought it was MOSTLY CGI. No thanks. Same same with Midway though I may small-screen it sooner or later, for History's sake. (Too bad CGI can't make Ford a better actor.)

I wonder how Trump encountered GWTW? I mean, he's about seven years my senior, and my exposure to GWTW was through the WABAWTS centennial rereleases; it seems like every few years from 1960 to 1965 my cousins and brothers and I were dragged to one of the old movie theaters
(i.e. not out east where we lived) to see the great movie about the Woah. Of course you can see it now 24/7 if you have a mind to, but back then it was an expedition.

Some Woah movie! All I saw was a bunch of dress-up and dancing and a fakey burning city. By the time of the battle of Atlanta aftermath scene, I was fed up and whatever came later is a mystery to me. It's a wonder it didn't turn me off the WABAWTS entirely.

An online friend, a retired history prof (also a southron) has an interesting subversive reading of the novel, which tempts me to take it up: the Old South is not presented as an ideal at all, and Scarlett and Rhett are both selfish cynics, not Rebel romantics.

The movie revivals brought out all the white oldsters and their children (children and grandchildren of WABAWTS veterans) and their often unwilling great-grands like myself; and it was second only to the touring Metropolitan Opera to bring out the old queens.

CGI: let’s take an old example. Terminator 2. I was at Apple when it came out. My department rented out half the theatre on opening day to see it. I remember being agog at how much the compositing and anti-aliasing technology had improved in just a couple of years with the T-1000 mimicking scenes and the being-split-down-the-middle scenes.

Welll, it really hadn’t: the split-down-the-middle T-1000s were puppets, courtesy of Amalgamated Dynamics. And the mimicry was the oldest stage magician’s trick in the book: casting identical twins. Yes, Linda Hamilton has an identical twin sister, Leslie.

I also have a interest in history and military history - so modern movies like Midway and 1917 also set off my bullshit detectors. For example in 1917, WW1 was a war of trenches and continuous fronts - no battalion would be positioned without units on both flanks and some logistics support both of which would have provided the lines of communication needed to stop an assaults, and what battalion commander in his right mind would think a single battalion attack would break the German army when attacks were normally at the division or corps level?

I know that a lot of you guys haven't owned a TV machine since Adam left the Ponderosa and others are still rocking along with the Zenith in the oak-finish cabinet but some of the most talented artists in the world are doing absolutely beautiful graphics work on those crappy "computer" movies.

You do need a good set, a good viewing set-up, and an interest in special effects to get the most out of it. Myself, I've been a fan since the first claymation dino's walked across the silver screen.

And if you think the writing and acting and directing are appreciably worse than they were in times past, well, you may be letting nostalgia and your old age get the best of your judgement.

So there, you irascible Luddites!

Yancey Ward म्हणाले...

CGI can be use brilliantly at creating scenes that would otherwise require so much money to fashion in reality that the scene would have to be cut due to budget contraints- see "Gladiator" for an example.

My complaint about CGI is that it is used create ridiculous and physically impossible scenes in movies like those in the Marvel movies. I could live with those, but they are so overused that they are visually exhausting to me. A better use in those cases- physically impossible- are how Christopher Nolan used them in "Inception"- there physically impossible was completely reasonable and necessary, the effect isn't visually exhausting- it is stunning and beautiful.

However, I think, eventually, CGI will comprise 100% of future movies and you won't be able to tell that you aren't watching live actors and sets on film/digital video. Not having to pay for actors, sets, and staff will drive this adoption of CGI on a universal scale.

Paul Snively म्हणाले...

rhhardin: The bad CGI gets the physics wrong.

Exactly. Thankfully, these days, we have really good integration of proper physics computation with rendering, as with this finite-element modeling library.

Real-time performance capture is changing everything. See A Boy and His Kite, a short rendered in real time by the Unreal 4 engine on a stock PC graphics card. Now see this FaceWare demo where they show the real-time performance capture of the actress playing the boy.

Unreal Engine is being used quite a bit in movies and TV, almost certainly including cases you’re unaware of, because the effect isn’t in the scifi/fantasy genre and/or the physics make sense.

I don’t have a problem with computerized imagery per se, but it does seem like movies that use it to "play the lead” generally suck. Like Maybee said about it being impossible to do CGI and write good dialogue, it seems.

Shrek was pretty good, but as I understand it, Mike Meyers did the performance first and they used that to create the scenes. Well,, he said he did a performance, but it bothered him, he didn’t like it, then he got the inspiration for the Scottish thing and redid all of the dialogue and they changed the movie because they thought his performance was so great, which it was.

Toy Story III was just a great story. It should be made into an opera. Sometimes you are vaguely aware that it is there, but it isn’t bad, like Brad Pitt’s chin in Fury. It seemed like they did something there, but it was good. But so much of it is shit of the “hello fellow children!” variety. I don’t think it’s the tool as much as the artist.

I'm surprised there haven't been calls to cancel "Call of the Wild." Jack London was a socialist from Oakland, but, like many early 20th century progressives, he held very unwoke opinions about the races. The novel reflects London's Social Darwinism. Buck, the pampered California pet who is dognapped and sent to Alaska, has to become tough and ruthless to survive in the harsh environment. Silly, sheltered animals and humans die. If I remember correctly, the novel ends with Buck getting revenge on a Native American tribe after they kill his master. A lone dog ends up ripping the stuffing out of the entire tribe before heading out into the wilderness. Somehow, I doubt that the movie will be true to the novel.

I believe a few years back, some SJWs tried to get London's statue removed from downtown Oakland due to his racial views.

I live about 10 miles from Jack London's retirement home near Glen Ellen, Sonoma, Ca. that burned down 2 weeks before he was to move in. His older home still remains and has been turned museum. They have a few of his *ahem* writings about the "superior farming techniques of the china man" and his "natural industriousness". I am still surprised some of the woke curators have not gone back and expunged these excerpts before someone is triggered. Jack didn't keep many fainting couches around the house.

I also like old movies, and we watch a lot of them on Turner Classic Movies, but on a percentage basis an awful lot of them were . . . well, awful. Not better or worse than a lot of awful contemporary movies, just different.

Gone With The Wind (aside from being politically incorrect) was a great picture, not entirely because of the great Burning of Atlanta scene, but because of the acting and writing. (The book, by the way, was awful).

Of course computerized special effects in contemporary movies don't replace good acting or writing. They do replace pretty cheesy special effects in a lot of old movies. Do you remember all the old WWII movies in which the dog fights were represented by random clips from old news reel films? You saw the same Jap Zero shot down a dozen times. In some old Sci-Fi movies you could see the wires holding up the space ship (models). Yes, CGI in many of the super hero movies today goes too far. Special effects in a lot of old movies went too far in other ways.
