But New Hampshire is also good news if you’re hoping for chaos. Our forecast has the chances that no one wins a majority of pledged delegates up to 33 percent, its highest figure yet, and roughly double what it was before Iowa

Even if we dismiss the 33 percent number the big reason for that number remains- no candidate is garnering a big percentage of the vote. Sanders did well in NH but still had only a narrow victory. What does it mean to be cruelly neutral?

In another thread I suggested that for someone with actual policy preferences, it is difficult to be cruelly neutral, at least between Trump and Bernie, unless the preferences are very differently weighted, for example to have a preference for abortion, satisfied by Bernie, outweigh exactly all the strengths on might see in Trump, in light of other preferences. Still, such exact equality would be remarkable.

Of course, I can understand not wanting to reveal a candidate preference, which is not neutrality but withholding judgment, and I am open to seeing how neutrality can be a considered judgement, an assessment based on likely actions by the candidates, judged in light of weighted preferences. But short of that, what is neutrality but a phony, self-satisfying pose?

Apart from the f**-the-deplorables contempt I noted in another thread, it strikes me as the kind of vacuous BS to which Althouse has expressed some allergic reactions in other contexts. The content-free assertion of moral superiority, the attribution of one's own virtue and superior judgment to a supposed higher power or greater force, the evasion of having to make an actual argument for an actual person or set of policies, the faint old-lefty invocation of history as having a direction that happens to fit one's own preferences -- it's the kind of thing to trigger Althouse, no?

The Stone prosecutors abused their power, full stop. There is no legitimate defense of this recommendation. The fact that they didn't inform their chain of command on this recommendation prior to giving it to the judge can only be explained by pure malice on their part. The prosecutors knew the recommendation was not only inappropriate, but they also knew that main DoJ would be forced to order it withdrawn or be in derelicition of their own duties. This was all planned right down to the sequential resignations. They should be prosecuted for violation of the civil rights code- what they were attempting to do to Stone is evil, and a violation of the ethos equal protection under the law.

URLs should definitely have quotes in the a href part. If Blogger lets you get away with skipping them that's somebody at google doing some extra coding when they wrote the platform. (Which is surprising since Blogger needs a lot of work it isn't getting. I guess at one time it was funded).

Anyway, if it doesn't work my guess is that your platform is using "smart quotes". HTML needs plain old ASCII straight-up-and-down double quotes. It won't work with curved double quotes. Unfortunately the visual difference is subtle.

"Considering what those lawyers charge, they should have carefully vetted the jurors' history"

A federal case of this nature, I am quite certain every juror candidate was given a questionaire that included questions like "Have you written anything, op ed, blog post, blog comment etc. that covered the Mueller investigation- if so, provide the details". It probably also included question like "Have you ever run for political office? If so, which office, which party etc." Yes to either of these questions would lead to an immediate dismissal from duty on the Stone trial, or should have. I am guessing the lady lied, if she was indeed on the Stone trial- something I still need to see verified by something other than just her saying it.

The trial never should have been held in D.C. Simple fairness should have had it moved to another circuit so that the jury pool isn't overwhelmed with registered Democrats in the first place. When it comes to blogging platforms, you get what you don't pay for.

Michael McNeil ayon kay ...

Inga: If you don't want to turn off the “Smart Punctuation” setting under Keyboard, there's another way to (easily!) enter the proper "straight" rather than “curly” double-quotes (for bracketing the url link in the html <A> tag when doing links).

The alternate solution to this issue (while leaving Smart Punctuation otherwise turned on) is to hold your finger down on the double-quote key until the subsidiary menu opens up (displaying several different kinds of quotes you can choose), then select the straight double-quotes (": rightmost item in the list).

Bruce Hayden ayon kay ...

“ Anyway, if it doesn't work my guess is that your platform is using "smart quotes". HTML needs plain old ASCII straight-up-and-down double quotes. It won't work with curved double quotes. Unfortunately the visual difference is subtle.

Here's what you need (")

Here's what you don't want (“) (”)

How do get the right double quote on an Ipad?”

If you are using an iPad, it is almost certain that you have a Smartquote problem. I have, in the past beaten my head against the wall, until it was bloody over this issue. The straight quotes look almost exactly just like the left and right quotes to our eyes. But not to computers, because all they see are ASCII codes, that differ between the three of these. And that is what computers are looking for are precisely matching ASCII code delimiters.

There is another problem with using an iPad, and that is how it handles “i”. IOS devices automatically capitalize standalone i’s. The problem is that the “I” HTML command specifies italics, which I sometimes use a lot. An “i” immediately following “<“ (start command delimiter) will automatically be capitalized, but not if after “<\”. So, if you type in your own Italics HTML, if you type it using lower case I’s, the opening command will have an upper case I, and the closing command will have a lower case I, which don’t match according to Blogger.

This is mostly a Blogger problem, since HTML is case insensitive, as is most of the internet. For example, my email addresses typically include “bhayden”, but BHayden, Bhayden, BHAYDEN, bhayden, etc all work just fine. Similarly, I have seen Ann’s site as Althouse.Blogpost.com, and althouse.blogpost.com. Within the angle brackets, HTML is also case insensitive when it is being interpreted. Or supposed to be, and that is where Blogger screws up - it isn’t case insensitive. Most HTML parsers run strings between angle brackets through a Case function (UpperCase or LowerCase) before parsing them. That way upper and lower case I’s match, as well as right, left, and straight double quotes (usually, but not always though with the quotes). The other place where Blogger screws up, is that it only accepts single quotes for HTML string delimiters. My memory is that the HTML standard also allows for at least single quotes - and that is because otherwise you could never include double quotes in delimited strings in HTML commands, without using escape sequences.

After periodically beating my head bloody for several years, whenever I tried to key in HTML into Blogger, I gave up, and started cheating. I have an IOS Note titled HTML, where I have stored Blogger acceptable HTML sequences. I then copy and paste into the Blogger comment editor. HTML requires matched pairs of commands, one for starting the command, and the other for ending it. They differ by the use of “\” after the angle brackets, and before the command specifier (such as I for Italics). In my HTML note I have the command parts listed separately on adjacent lines, as well as on the same line - except for Anchor (A) commands (which are used for HTML links). I have one of them split across three lines, with an additional break between the double quotes. This is because sometimes IOS makes it hard to move the insertion point through existing text. Much easier and faster to just paste it into the Blogger comment editor, spread across two or three lines, insert the text you want, and then delete the line break(s) closing everything up. Making it even easier now, the newest versions of IOS allow you to use a 4 finger slide right and left to switch between applications (similar to Ctl+Tab in Windows).

Whoops. Obvious error. Should have been:

“The other place where Blogger screws up, is that it only accepts DOUBLE quotes for HTML string delimiters. My memory is that the HTML standard also allows for at least single quotes - and that is because otherwise you could never include double quotes in delimited strings in HTML commands, without using escape sequences. ”

“ A federal case of this nature, I am quite certain every juror candidate was given a questionaire that included questions like "Have you written anything, op ed, blog post, blog comment etc. that covered the Mueller investigation- if so, provide the details"”

I would have fun there, given how much I have commented on the case, and many here know to their dismay.

Bruce: With regard to the “Smartquote” problem you were describing, have you tried (turning off) the Smart Punctuation setting (under Keyboard) that Unknown was mentioning up-thread?

Just leaving this here for racist fopdoodles and former alleged poll watchers:

The URL gives away the details.
