My SIL posted on FB an American flag transforming over five or six panels into a Nazi Swastika. I'm not sure what that means. I don't know why she would do that on a platform designed for friends to share and communicate. I don't understand why people misunderstand and hate Trump and his supporters so very, very completely and irrationally. And if she means what I think I'm not sure sure how she can ever be in the presence of a Trump supporter, me, ever again.

In 1805 Congress impeached Associate Supreme Court Justice Samuel Chase for using excessively partisan political language and general inappropriate behavior on the bench. The Senate refused to convict in a bi-partisan vote with most senators stating they felt just partisan influence on the bench was not impeachable; they needed some specific instance of actual misconduct in ruling.

The Senate "trial" was presided over by the Vice-President, Aaron Burr, who had survived a notorious Federal trial for actual treason, and was then under indictment for murder in New Jersey following his killing of Alexander Hamilton in a duel over personal insults. By then dueling was a felony crime in itself, even if no physical injury resulted.
Burr took care never again to enter the State of New Jersey, but served out his term as Vice-President without anyone bringing up the subject of impeachment in his case.

I think that we're past the point where this thing can be walked back. You have millions of people who have supported overthrowing the established government without any evidence to support it, and now they're ignoring the evidence of several coup attempts. Besides the actual conspirators who supply the money and call the next shot, the millions of their supporters are now running on pure vanity. I don't see that stopping of its own momentum.

AFAIK, the office of Speaker is mentioned in the Constitution, but only once, in passing, and taking it for granted that any assembly must have a presiding officer.

In Parliament, the previous one, John Bercow, on his retirement was given good marks for evenhandedness in presiding over debates - famously so for BBC's Questions for the Prime Minister - but were chided a bit for having had a tendency to let his Labourite affiliations show in other matters. Apparently this is not considered appropriate for the holder of the office, though the Speaker is elected from among the Members.

In Congress, it has now come to pass that the Speaker of the House no longer "speaks for the House", but only as leader of the majority party, though retaining all the powers of the office for the full House.

This while the party keeps a full complement of elected leaders, Majority Leader, Majority Whip, etc. (The Democrats even have an Assistant Majority Leader, I think, for the Black contingent of their caucus, which seems somewhat "racist" of them, but what do I know.)

The great Alan Jackson has a say here today, indeed:

"She's been playin' in a room on the Strip
For ten years in Vegas
Every night she looks in the mirror
And she only ages
She's been readin' about Nashville and all
The records that everybody's buyin'
Says 'I'm a simple girl myself
Grew up on Long Island'
So she packs her bags to try to her hand
Says this might be my last chance

She's gone country, look at them boots
She's gone country, back to her roots
She's gone country, a new kind of suit
She's gone country, here she comes

Well the folk scene is dead
But he's holdin' out in the village
He's been writin' songs speakin' out
Against wealth and privilege
He says 'I dont believe in money
But a man could make him a killin'
'Cause some of that stuff don't sound
Much different than Dylan
I hear down there it's changed you see
They're not as backward as they used to be

He's gone country, look at them boots
He's gone country, back to his roots
He's gone country, a new kind of suit
He's gone country, here he comes

Well, he commutes to LA
But he's got a house in the valley
But the bills are pilin' up
And the pop scene just ain't on the rally
And he says 'Honey I'm a serious composer
Schooled in voice and composition
But with the crime and the smog these days
This ain't no place for children
Lord it sounds so easy it shouldn't take long
Be back in the money in no time at all'

He's gone country, look at them boots
He's gone country, backt to his roots
He's gone country, a new kind of suit
He's gone country, here he comes
Yeah he's gone country, a new kind of walk
He's gone country, a new kind of talk
He's gone country, look at them boots
He's gone country, oh back to his roots

He's gone country
He's gone country
Everybody's gone country
Yeah we've gone country
The whole world's gone country"

Romney has an extreme dislike for Trump and everyone knows this. Of COURSE he was going to vote to convict. But he's still such a pussy he couldn't vote for both articles. The Dems who voted against Nancy's impeachment also probably had no love for Trump (though their districts may have), but still voted in his favor. There was even a defection in the end. Just based on those facts, I don't really see how any fair mind can look at this as anything other than a convincing Trump win. The witnesses argument is crap, because the House could've done their job. Back then it was "urgent", of course. Then it became "we need to take our time" once the ball was out of Nancy's court. When even your flashpoint is a fake "whistleblower" receiving a hivemind hush treatment by deluded leftists, which normal people observe to be absurd, how can you expect to actually win the day? Witness after witness in the House hearings claimed never having been told a quid pro quo existed, but so many just had a hunch. Yeah, sure. The Parnas distraction ran out of steam mighty fast too - the left just can't catch a break here.

Narciso,

I examined a few of these worksheets- it appears to me that the math was done incorrectly, or the rules were terrible. You shouldn't end up with so many leftover delegates unless you are using the initial voter numbers, not the the voters in the last alignment for the calculation. If you don't participate in the realignment, you shouldn't be counted for SDEs, at least I don't think you should be. A bigger collection of these worksheets needs to be examined.

In short, the 2nd alignment will almost always have fewer participants than the first- mainly because non-viable candidates supporters might not want to support anyone else, and leave. However, the delegates numbers appear to be based on the 1st aligment alone- even though the calculations involve each candidates vote totals from the second alignment. This leads to 1-5 extra delegates (the size depends on the magnitude of the vote totals and the dropouts). Overall, if you do end up with an extra, the rule for assigning the extras is ok, but I really do question using the number of participants in the 1st alignment as the base- that seems inappropriate since it is support in the 2nd alignment that really matters.

There was an article that referenced a press release from the Wuhan Virology Instutute some years ago which interviewed a young scientist who was very excited about the prospect of understanding how bats where able to live with infections of deadly viruses without succumbing to them. Their immune systems didn’t overreact, and it seems like the overreaction of the immune system is what makes many viruses deadly. That article has been sort of scrubbed from the internet because it named the guy.

It may be that it is not a bioweapon, at least by intent, but more like an industrial accident involving well meaning research. From this point of view, it still doesn’t rule out that they were tinkering with viruses with CRSPR, which is a technology long out of the bag. Certainly Chinese spies have been caught both in Boston smuggling viruses, see DOJ’s website, and Canada.

I like to read literature from the turn of the previous century, so I am familiar with the history of the Spanish Flu, and I know that a decade or two ago, they dug up some victims of it in the arctic. So you know there are samples of it around, anyway. It was a horrific event.
