"If Uncle Joe has to win millennial and Gen-Z hearts and minds — after riding to the nomination on the back of a wall-to-wall anti-Bernie ad blitz from Third Way and friends — his task may be impossible."

"Although Sanders’s 2016 backers did not sit out (or defect) during the general election in aberrantly high numbers, the age gap between Biden and Bernie backers this year is even larger than the one that prevailed between Clinton and the Vermont senator four years ago. One recent Emerson College poll found that only 53 percent of Sanders’s current supporters plan to vote for the Democratic nominee in November, no matter who that person turns out to be.... [I]f the Democratic Party’s incumbent elites united to take down the (supposedly) unelectable socialist, they would risk rendering Biden unelectable in the process, and there’s little rational basis for them to take such a gamble. Yes, Sanders has become a real contender in recent weeks, but Biden is still the front-runner. And the available polling suggests that if this race ever becomes a two-man contest between the leading septuagenarians, the former vice-president won’t have much trouble assembling a plurality of delegates... [I]t would be irrational for centrist Democrats to launch an 'Anyone But Bernie' campaign — unless they include Donald Trump in the 'Anyone' category."

From "The Bernie Campaign Is Fortified by a Human Shield of Millennials" (NY Magazine).

Is this a clever pro-Bernie con? Do not fight him, for in doing so, you will destroy yourself.

The dems lose no matter who gets the nomination.

So throw Bernie out there to get slaughtered, but further soften up America's resistance to the idea of electing a socialist.

I have wondered why, given they unlikelyhood of beating Trump, the Democrats don’t just appease Bernie And his supporters and let him be the sacrificial lamb.

I believe now it is due mainly to down-ballot coattail concerns for the House and Senate contests. Biden would do much better for them, perhaps better than any other current candidate. sanders would be very problematic.

If somebody on Biden's team is smart - a big if - they will let one of the other remaining candidates do the heavy lifting for them. That could be Bloomberg, with deep pockets that are bigger than he is himself. Then Bloomberg faces a similar problem to Biden's. Not that he'll get the nomination, but he wants liberal America to love him as the Trumpslayer, not revile him as the 4th and richest Koch brother.

If Joe goes negative, it will create problems for voters. Cognitive dissonance. Biden's the grandfatherly guy who'd rather tell long, rambling stories about his days as a lifeguard than attack other Democrats. If his people are blitzing the airways with attack videos directed at Bernie, voters may not know how to reconcile the man and his campaign's message in their minds, and Biden may not be able to back up his attacks in the debates.

I wonder what Edmund Morris, Reagan's biographer, is thinking now. Morris made Reagan's days as a lifeguard the key to his personality and career - Ron's Rosebud - because he couldn't figure out any other way to write the book. Now there's a politician who can't stop talking about his time at the pool and Morris has already wasted the lifeguard thing on Reagan.

Nonapod म्हणाले...

At this point I think everyone senses what is coming, assuming they're being honest with themselves.

We all know there's no real enthusiasm behind Biden. His campaign appearances always seem staid and even desultory, punctuated with the occasional gaffe or angry outburst toward a questioner. He's fettered with a long history of corruption that has been slowly revealed despite the media's best efforts to obfuscate it. His age and his health are very real concerns too.

Conversely Bernie has lots of plenty of real enthusiam, but only from the youth. Black people and older white people by and large either distrust him or think his ideas are just too extreme and unrealistic.

Biden will be the nominee. And Biden will lose. Ultimately it's because hating Trump isn't enough.

Generally for a Democrat to beat a Republican incumbant there has to be serious problems that can be strongly linked to the incumbant. Things like an economic collapse, an all out war, or the like. So far we don't have problems of that scale. We have problems that are of the minor persistent sort (healthcare worries, young people worrying that they'll never be able to enjoy the kind of success their parents had, disagreements about immigration ect.). But other than that, generally things are objectively good.

Trump hatred is high, but believe it or not you don't have to like a person to vote for them. It's possible to think someone is a jerk but to also recognize that they're good at what they do.

Bay Area Guy म्हणाले...

Bernie is a joke. He's been, essentially, hanging around Vermont for 50+ years not working, or producing anything of value.

The problem is, his high-fallutin' ideas are horrid when implemented. You get shortages, poverty, unrest, civil war, violence and oppression. See Venezuela. See North Korea.

But what about Sweden?!!? - the excitable young socialist asks. Well, Yes, in a small homogenous country, that didn't have the mettle to carry the world's fight to stop Nazism and to stop the Soviets, you can have a quaint little semi-socialist country like Sweden. Good on ya.

But that won't work here in a Consitutional Republic. You'll have to confiscate a lotta wealth, Bernie, not of the Billionaires, but of the middle class folks. We won't like it and will resist. No pussy hat phony resistance either.

MeatPopscicle1234 म्हणाले...

It's possible to think someone is a jerk but to also recognize that they're good at what they do.

What Nonapod wrote bears repeating. Something we learn in high school sports is that you don't have to like someone to play on a team with them. If you think the quarterback is a jerk, you are still going to block for him, still going to catch the pass he throws your way. Initially, because if you don't then the coach will pull you off the field and send in someone who will. Later, you do it because that's how the team wins, and winning beats losing. Ditto throwing to the shortstop to get the double play -- doesn't matter if you don't like the shortstop, it only matters if you can get the double play.

And this is why women, on the whole, are still have a ways to go to catch up to men. We males cooperate whether we like each other or not. The evidence from female sports, and from my own experience, is that women won't cooperate if they don't like each other. Serious, serious flaw. How serious? In June 2017 a Navy destroyer was hit by a lumbering container ship, and the logs demonstrated that the female Officer of the Deck (OOD) did not speak at all with the female Tactical Action Officer while the ship was sailing in one of the most crowded waterways of the ocean. Seven sailors paid paid with their lives for the women's snit.

The problem I see there is that Bernie might be able to gain ore votes in places that have a lot of woke (ie stupid) millennials like I my native CO, Silicon Valley NYC, but that would mostly just crank up the Dem margins of victory in those states. It is unlikely to do that in most of the Trump states, even some of the Blue Wall states that crumbled and went narrowly to Trump in 2016 like MI. On the flip side, Sanders seems to have almost zero black support, and not much more with other POC. Trump, of course, is working hard, in particular, to win Black voters, with some apparent success. Without an almost unanimous Black vote, the Dem candidate is likely toast in a lot of swing states, and would likely lose several swing states that Trump lost narrowly in 2016.

Which essentially suggests to me that Bernie’s best chance at winning would be to pick a POC as a running mate. Maybe best would be Michelle, but my bet is that she wouldn’t accept the nomination. The quasi blacks (Harris and Spartacus) who ran for the nomination are weak, and would be seen as such. I think that his best chance would be Tulsi. Despite her socialist credentials, she seems even better at exciting millennials than Crazy Bernie, is a POC, as well as a member of the military, and a combat veteran.

My main argument for it is that the economy isn't in recession, unemployment is very low, Trump is the incumbent, and Gary Johnson and the plethora of other right leaning candidates took 5% of the vote nationally in 2016 after getting 1% in 2012. I think those 3rd party candidates go back to 1% in 2020, and most of the 4% will accrue to Trump, not the Demcoratic candidate (who will get Stein's 1% from 2016 unless they openly screw Bernie over).

3) Although I don't believe it is at all possible today, Reagan took 49 states in 1984 against Walter Mondale who was much more formidable and less radical than any of the Democrat candidates in 2020.

2) Trump will lose few if any voters from 2016. He's turned out better than expected, and is keeping promises. He's losing nobody, but gaining in every demographic and persuasion. Among what group is he less popular than in 2016?

That should prove extremely interesting. This maybe is the time to but popcorn futures.

She lost an election that she could have, and should have, won, because she was too stupid and too infirm, to campaign where she needed to and instead spent her time raising money from mega donors In states that she was going to win by large margins. As a result, the Democrats got the hated Darth Trump as President, who has turned over a lot of their apple carts, and gone a long way towards flipping the Judiciary to the Republicans. Is she really healthier this time around? Highly unlikely - her most likely maladies are all progressive, and she is four years older.

But maybe most fatal for her chances of beating Trump is the spat she has been engaging in, with Tulsi Gabbard, who can speak to Millennials, like Shelob can only dream of doing. The latest is that Tulsi has sued her for defamation, and Her Horribleness is currently dodging service of process. The first try was at her house, but Secret Service had been instructed to not let the process server get close enough to serve her, and they complied. Next try was serving her lawyers, and that apparently didn’t work either.

The other problem with Her Nastiness is that it is now personal with Trump. She had a big part behind the Dems and Deep State attacks on him, that continue to this day. She, through the DNC and her campaign, hired Fusion GPS and Christopher Steele, which ultimately resulted in Steele’s bogus Dossier being used as the basis of the illegal FISA warrants on Carter Page, and Trump’s campaign, transition, and Presidency, then the appointment of Mueller and his SC investigation. A lot of Trump’s base believe that that was cheating, on an unprecedented, epic, level. They would crawl across broken glass to prevent her from winning.

You do not seem to understand what this is about.

The globalists who call these shots do not respect elections. Look at the reaction to Trump being elected. Look at how they reacted to Brexit.

They own the media, the universities, the popular culture, and enough courts to make that a weapon.

They will undermine and destroy any institution they do not control. There are no sacrificial lambs. These people will not stop until they have all the power.

You will not stop them by beating them in elections.

“However from what I have seen they are even more tolerant of race gender and sexuality issues that will prevent them from ever siding with a Trump style Republican candidate.”

Except that the supposed racial issues are almost all contrived. A large, and increasing, number of POC don’t believe that Trump is the least bit racist, and many of them seem headed in his direction. For a lot of Blacks, Hispanics, and other POC, Trump has given their communities the lowest level of unemployment in their lifetimes. In reality, he is the furthest thing from a racist, and that is becoming ever more obvious to these POC.

As for sexism, Trump brings his elder daughter along whenever he travels to confabs around the world, where she inevitably leads sessions on Women in business, empowering women, etc, after having successful created her own clothing line business. He not only talks the talk, he also walks the walk, when it comes to empowering women. Again his supposed sexism is completely contrived by his opponents.

That leaves sexuality. No evidence that he is homophobic. Rather he seems to just oppose the left’s recent obsession with transsexualism, which seems to be more a question of mental illness, than actual brain function (which is the basis of much, if not most, homosexuality - they are wired that way). Moreover, if you think about it rationally, you would realize that feminism and transsexualism, as practiced these days, are incompatible. Any one who honestly believes in both is probably suffering horrible cognitive dissonance. That is because women are the ones hurt most, in many cases by transsexualism. They are losing female sports, female safe spaces, like restrooms, etc. Even the safety of single sex prisons. Do any parents of daughters really want untransitioned transwomen hanging around the restrooms that their daughters frequent, or taking showers with them after gym class?

Boy, reading the comments here, it seems like a lot of people are pretty certain Trump has an easy path to victory in 2020.
I am...less certain!

To be clear, I'm certainly not saying it's a sure thing by any means, or that it'll even be "an easy path". I'm just making observations and drawing conclusions based upon them.

If we look at what happened in 2016, which is our main data point, and ask the simple question "Will the people who voted for Trump in 2016 also vote for him in 2020?". At this point I would find it difficult to believe that Trump has lost any more than a negligable amount of voters. Again, it's just my impression.

From there, you have to wonder what has changed since 2016? Economically things seem to be going pretty well. Of course, that could change by November so there's no guarantees.

There's certatinly going to be some amount of new voters, people who turned 18, new citizens, or people who for whatever reason skipped voting in 2016. I would guess that most of these newly minted and lapsed voters will vote against Trump, but not all. How many of them are there? Probably not a huge amount relative to the overall electorate, so I would doubt that they'd have a critical tipping effect.

There's voters who may have voted for Hillary last time but who will vote for Trump this time round. Maybe not a huge number, but it's hard to dismiss.

Another question someone might ask is "Is Biden a more appealing candidate in 2020 than Hillary was in 2016?". That's a bit more of challenging to answer clearly. As we all know, Hillary had/has her baggage. But Biden does too. He's old doesn't always seem lucid. He's gaffe prone. His temperment isn't the best (snapping at questioners isn't an appealing look). He's corrupt and it's becoming increasingly difficult for the media to constantly run cover for him. At this point I would say it's a wash.

So what's left? The margin of fraud. Can the Democrats effectively steal the election? Perhaps. They failed to do so in 2016, but they may have been flat footed, assuming that Hillary had it in the bag. They'll have more impetuous to commit fraud this time I suppose, but they'll have to get away with it, too. Not as easy in this day and age with smart phone cameras, Project Vertias, and all the scrutiny this election will have.

When I weigh everything in my head, at this point things seem to slightly favor Trump. There's still a lot of things that could go against him. There's always Black Swan, October Suprises and the like. But at this point that's how I see things.

Keep in mind that the “hands up, don’t shoot” myth was apparently started by Brown’s coconspirator, Dorian Johnson, who probably could have been prosecuted for felony murder with the death of his accomplice, Brown. For one thing, Brown apparently handed the stolen cigarillos to Johnson, so that he could have both hands free when he assaulted Wilson in his police vehicle. Grabbing a police officers gun is typically treated as attempted murder, and Johnson admitted (along with Wilson) that he had aided and abetted that attempted murder. Maybe he could claim that he had disengaged sufficiently, by leaving the scene, before Brown turned and repeatedly tried to attack Wilson, to beat a felony murder rap, but he essentially admitted to aiding and abetting the earlier attempted murder. And yet, he was never charged for either. One reason may be because of the “hands up, don’t shoot” myth he started.

I would have stopped using it, but recently we heard about some Bernie Bros, big wheels in Breadlines Bernie's campaign, defending the Soviet Union's use of the gulags, saying they weren't that bad, and hinting that if Sanders gets elected, they might be instituted here for the "re-education" of "reactionaries." So I don't mind using it again, hoping it catches on.

The headline Althouse gave her post, and Howard's own -- educated but foolish -- take is that the Millennials and Gen-Z uniformly support Bernie's socialism. I rather doubt that people who work for a living, the plumbers who repair our pipes, the electricians who hung our family room fixture, HVAC technicians, welders, auto mechanics, etc. -- are socialists at heart. They get that socialism means that they have to pay larger portions of their takehome pay to support drones like Howard and Robert Cook.

Googly-eyed Schiff is feigning outrage. He doesn’t know the whistleblower or that individual’s name? Pull the other one, schiffbag, you lying sonuva bitch

Impeach Roberts for "Obstruction of Congress and Abuse of Power.”

Yep.

As far as Biden wanting someone younger on the ticket - I voted for McCain sincerely hoping Sarah Palin would soon replace him. I would have shed as many years if he had died the day after assuming the presidency as I shed when he eventually did wear out his welcome on this plane of existence- none.

Usually the VP pick is immaterial. In Biden's or Bernie's case, it won't be. Which brings up a question. Why is Biden always referred to by his surname and Bernie by his nickname?

How did Roberts know that Eric Ciaramella’s name required anonymity? Schiff and his staff don’t know Ciaramella’s name. Who leaked the name to the Chief Justice and how did the leaker learn of Ciaramella’s identity?

Great point, B M, very original. Who needs to listen to Rush Limbaugh when we can read his talking points summarized by you with a bow on it.

Good for Chief Justice Roberts. Now I see the Trumpists want the Chief Justice impeached. As Schiff said today “Ya can’t make this stuff up folks”.

Left Bank thinks the socialist voters are plentiful enough to have flipped the 44 state election of Ronald Reagan.

That is damned ignorant.

When Trump replaces Breyer and RBG, John Roberts will be unimportant.
I'd give him relevance for another three years.

What's really ignorant is thinking that John Anderson was a socialist in the vein of Ralph Nader. He was more or less a Rockefeller Republican.

Socialists and Communists have always come from the ranks of the middle and upper middle classes. True in Lenin's time - true today.

They take affluence for granted and always assume that they will be the ones in charge, guiding the benighted workers.

The ranks of Antifa (which overlap with the ranks of the Bernie Bros) are filled with spoiled white middle class and upper class children.

Bill Ayres, Obama's buddy, comes from a wealthy family. Blue collar people don't want to blow up the system - they want stability and a chance to succeed.

Now that there is some funny shit.

Adam Schiff said you can't make stuff up. He will say absolutley anything.

For two years he lied to your face over and over. You watched him fabdricate an entire alternative President's phone call during a televised Congressional hearing, and that's just two special examples. Madam, have you no shame?
