Handshake rejected.

0:00 — Elizabeth Warren, looking toward Bernie Sanders, puts her open hand on Biden's upper arm — if not pushing Biden aside at least physically preserving her clear path toward Sanders.

0:01 — EW withdraws her right hand from Biden's sleeve and points upward with her right index finger, which I read as asking for a moment with Sanders. Sanders is stretching out his right hand, an easily recognizable expression of desire for a handshake. Then, still within the 0:01 time frame on this clip, EW pulls her fingers into a fist. For a fraction of a second, it looks as though she'd like to punch him, but she immediately unclenches.

0:02 — The unclenching of EW's fist looks like a thumb's up, then she drops her hand down and clasps it inside her other hand. She arrives in Bernie's handshake zone with 2 hands held together, against her chest. She is talking, he is listening, and his right hand is already drooping down, ready to accept the absence of a handshake. With his left hand, he holds the edge (or the button) of his jacket.

0:03 — EW wrings her 2 hands together as she steps forward toward Bernie.

0:05 — EW is still talking and she pumps her clasped together hands for emphasis. Bernie's right hand is still in the process of falling out of the failed handshake. The left hand is still in the jacket-holding position. He leans forward, listening.

0:06 — EW's clasps hands look like supplication. Bernie's right hand rises. He opens his mouth to speak.

0:07 — With his outstretched right hand, long fingers extended, Bernie, mouth closed again, reaches out as if to touch EW's upper arm.

0:08 — No, he does not touch. His hand waves around. It's Bernie-style talking, which involves hand movements. Both of his hands are stretched out now. EW is still in the hands-clasped position. And suddenly Steyer is there too, horning in on the momentous encounter, touching Bernie on the back.

0:10 — Bernie is still talking and waving.

0:11 — Suddenly, EW's fingers burst open into full extension, as if to engulf Bernie's right hand just as it springs into a point. Then her hands retreat back to a clasp as he continues pointing. Steyer looks back and forth at the 2, like he's the referee.

0:12 — Bernie points at himself then at EW again, then turns away. [ADDED: Just before turning away, Bernie holds both hand up, palms facing EW, in a gesture that seems to say "Enough of you!" or "Stay away!"]

0:13 — Steyer immediately puts his hand on Bernie's shoulder and moves off with his fellow man.

0:15 — Steyer engages Bernie in a hearty handshake, and EW turns toward Buttigieg, who gives a nice smile and receives a pumpy handshake.

ADDED: See why I can't simulblog debates anymore? Either you watch or you don't. 15 seconds is exhausting to observe — truly observe — analyze, and write about. I'm interested in the action at that level. But the hours of talking are deadly if what you're trying to do is to slog through the whole thing. It's impossible!

UPDATE: The audio of the encountered became available:
“I think you called me a liar on national TV,” Warren said to Sanders.

“Let’s not do it right now,” Sanders responded. “You called me a liar.”

Meanwhile, Tom Steyer, caught awkwardly between the longtime friends and colleagues, said: “I don’t want to get in the middle ... I just wanted to say ‘Hi,’ Bernie.”

“Yeah, OK. Good,” Sanders said
.
So Warren began with confrontation, and he responded with conciliation... and correction.

It doesn't seem that charging Bernie with being sexist in a private conversation worked particularly well. Caught the last few questions and the closing statements. Steyer seems like he's barely containing the crazy. Warren was scolding. Sanders bombastic. Buttigieg was so studied and obvious in his attempt at grandiosity that it looked silly, and he definitely was not going for a comic effect. Joe has lost more than a step, and it's painfully obvious to anyone who's either familiar with what he used to be like or has dealt with a loved one battered by the bitch time and her evil handmaiden, dementia. Klobuchar seems normal and boring, which was a relief in this crowd, but, like, really, really ordinary, and she's auditioning for a really extraordinary job. Their responses to the questions were non-sequiturs. Their closing statements were disjointed from one another, and internally disjointed in most cases, with the only common theme that Trump is awful, and we're in terrible danger if we don't rescue our country from him. None of them seemed to believe what they were saying, all came across as scared under the bright lights, scared and badly programmed human robots trying to do that sincerity and authenticity thing. God help us.

In case anyone noticed I made it, like four or five times last year, I retract my prediction that Warren will be the nominee. The last time that prediction seemed solid to me was when Bernie had a heart attack, and I figured he'd drop out and the progressives/lefties would consolidate around her. She's the "rational choice" for my more educated progressive friends and acquaintances, with Bernie being their heart's desire. But she's been a disaster of a candidate and has pissed away whatever it was that made me think she would rise above this field. They're all terrible, each in his or her own way. I'm starting to believe there's something to the conspiracy theorists who believe we're headed towards a brokered convention and a DNC selected alternative like Hillary. Odds are still one of these clowns will be a sacrificial lamb to the 2020 election slaughter, but it's hard for me to imagine any of these people even credibly running for president. It's a testament to the strength of the Democrat Party as an institution that it's been able to resist the changes that have transformed the GOP. It wasn't just Trump, it was Trump as an instrument of the party's supporters, who battered the party with Trump until it broke. The Dems are still doing things the same way they've been doing them as though our politics, and not just ours but across the world, have been transforming. Running political hacks under the control of the party leadership, drawing your candidates from the ranks of the greasy poll climbers and rejecting people from outside this milieu, is how it used to be done. Maybe that will work again. I don't think so, and it looks like it will take multiple humiliating defeat for the Dems to change their m.o. A strong party institutionally, but it's costing them power. The dismay amongst the Dems I know is actually sad at this point. My most politically engaged friends and acquaintances are despairing, and their conversations with one another are mostly bereavement and consolation.

Plus....looking at Warren ...I still cannot unsee this! everytime she waves her absurdly long arms in the air.

Something I've realized, to my surprise, is that I trust Bernie to be honest. I think he's a nut, and a commie thug, but I do believe he has the virtue of honesty. He speaks his mind without too much concern about what people think of him. He makes controversial statements and then shrugs off the reaction. He doesn't give focus-grouped answers. I find his authenticity refreshing. I wish more Dems were like him, instead of playing manipulative games and pretending to be moderates. I liked Paul Wellstone for the same reason.

So when it comes to Warren versus Sanders and who is telling the truth, I believe Sanders implicitly. I don't think he would say what Warren accuses him of, and if he denies it, I believe him. Warren, meanwhile, has a history of lying and passive-aggressive behavior. Sanders has earned the people's trust. (Again, notwithstanding that he would bring back the gulags.)

Andrew, Bernie is definitely closer to an authentic human being than the rest of these slugs. However, on the key component of his policy platform, mass immigration, he caved in 2016. He's always opposed illegal and mass immigration because of the depressing effect it has on wages domestically, especially for lower skilled and lower paid workers. His entire approach to democratic socialism depends on controlling the border. Not that his platform makes sense to me in any event, but he has historically been internally consistent with his policy platform (consistently awful, but consistent). He probably doesn't lie as much as Warren, but he's lied on big things.

I agree. Except for his about-face on stemming illegal immigration to boost U.S. wages, he's pretty straight forward and consistent. He stayed Left and waited for the party to move to him.

Yes. That is true. Point taken. That was a great disappointment. Imagine if Bernie gave vocal support to Trump's immigration policies from a left-wing perspective. That would have changed the entire debate in this country.

So in that regard, you're right, he has been a typical politician. I still find him unusually authentic, though. Interestingly, I know of several people who voted for Trump, who would have voted for Sanders if he had been the nominee in 2016. Didn't you know that ALL paid for child care is run by a huge national company that charges families vast sums but pays workers sub-standard wages thereby maximizing profits? This cartel so firmly controls the child care industry that every single child care worker that is not employed by this company must pay protection money (I mean dues) to them so that their lives are not destroyed by "mysterious" events.

It is this very company that Bernie will go after with the full force of the Government to ensure that it lowers what it charges to needy families everywhere AND increases the wages paid to its workforce [as well as eliminate the dues paid by freelancers].

That is how Bernie will get this problem solved!

Wait, what? You don't believe a word of that? Delusional you say? Well sir, that is NO more delusional than Bernie and as EVERYONE knows, the DNC would never allow a delusional person to run for POTUS so everything Bernie says is rational and as such, all that I wrote is rational too! So there!

Everything about Warren is artificial and scripted. Her gestures are not natural when she is speaking/performing.

Yes. I did not get the sense that she was snubbing him. My sense is that she did not want to be seen shaking his hand because she is going after him. They were likely talking about that.

She probably said, "It's not personal, Sonny. It's strictly business".

Bernie meant that American society is so sexist and benighted that a woman couldn't be elected. This, while untrue, would be entirely consistent with Hillary's line, and with much of feminist thinking generally. And it would be exactly the kind of observation that Bernie would make in conversation with Elizabeth -- or the other way around. Nothing there for woke opinion to find objectionable.
Warren seized on this ambiguity in an effort to throw shade on Bernie, and because it makes for the kind of spat people seem to enjoy. The press colluded.

This was apparently the most dramatic moment of debate night. I didn't miss much. I'm glad I skipped it....I can't muster much interest in the conflicts within the Royal Family either, but in a generation or two it will make for an interesting episode on The Crown. The Democratic debates flicker with moments of insignificance before being doused with oblivion....The Hollywood award shows sometimes have interesting moments, but it's easier to just wait for the next day and see the highlights. There have been no highlights in the Democratic debates. The debate rules should allow for one interesting candidate on stage just to stimulate viewer interest. I think Yang or maybe Gabbard are the only interesting candidates left.

I'm amazed anyone is still watching these. They could look up what these people think in about ten minutes.

That little "Oh, my stars and garters!" gesture Liz made, pulling her hands up to her chest, looks so weak. If she wanted to project strength, she should have firmly shaken Bernie's hand and not let go of it until she'd had her say with him, face to face. Fake victimhood. Feh...

The Fake Indian should have challenged Old Socialist Bernie to an arm wrestling contest. Stating the challenge so all could hear.

"15 seconds is exhausting to observe — truly observe — analyze, and write about. I'm interested in the action at that level."

Althouse just needs to adopt the breathless style of a Bodice Ripper or Spank Book, although the words like "glistening", "supple" and "heaving" for these two conjure entirely different imagery.

0:06 — EW's clasps hands look like supplication. Bernie's right hand rises. He opens his mouth to speak.

0:07 — With his outstretched right hand, long fingers extended, Bernie, mouth closed again, reaches out as if to touch EW's upper arm.

Did she reveal something about Bernie

or something about herself?

She planned to go off the reservation last night.

I'd like to revise and extend my earlier remarks. Liz Warren actually may have a deal with Biden to split the Socialist vote and otherwise block Bernie, in exchange for the VP on his one-term ticket. My impression is that she has always been willing to fly whatever flag of convience advances her career: Republican commercial law expert, token minority, radical Harvard Law Democrat.

You just KNOW that CNN has a hot mike on the encounter.

It would be out there to hear if the debate was for the R's.

Indian leg wrestling. I thought that's why she wore the pants?

I take comfort in not even knowing there was a debate until I clicked on Althouse today.

"You just KNOW that CNN has a hot mike on the encounter. "

I was right and wrong. They DID have a hot mike but wrong in that it has now been released (closer than Schiff and the transcript reading):
"You called me a liar on national TV".
Nuh-uh, YOU did"
"Yeh-uh! YOU did!"
